Well if we do, let's make another.

I'm gonna go with "Lose Control".

― Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 July 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

3-way Tie: "Since U Been Gone" (Kelly Clarkson) & "Bitch" (Rinôçérôse) & "Vive La Difference" (Portobella)

― Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 11 July 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

tie: "since u been gone" & "one thing"

― mark p (Mark P), Monday, 11 July 2005 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, there has been far too much musichall in the "charts" for the 5200th week in sucession.

That said, Miss Clarkson has entertained this gentleman greatly during the past month with her shapely buttocks.

― Esteban P. Buttez Esq., Monday, 11 July 2005 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Tie: "One Thing" w/ Eve, "Rich Girl", and "Since U Been Gone"

― milo, Monday, 11 July 2005 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hollaback Girl, 1 Thing, What You Waiting For

― A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 11 July 2005 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Amerie's only in there cos I'm sick of liking Gwen so much.

― A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 11 July 2005 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

somewhat boringly i cast my vote for low's "california" with honorable mentions to tom vek and kari kleiv.

― A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 11 July 2005 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I'm overjoyed "Since U Been Gone" is getting this much love.

Put that at #1 for me as a place holder, it's fa-sho top three.

― deej.., Monday, 11 July 2005 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Inside and Out"

― Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 11 July 2005 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I go with "Wait (The Whisper Song)," "BYOB," "The Hand That Feeds" and Audioslave's "Your Time Has Come." Shocking, but true, that Audioslave song actually fuckin' rocks. "Since U Been Gone" is swell, too, I suppose. That catchy reggaeton tune that always get played at Mets games. And Sleater-Kinney's "Rollercoaster" sure is nifty. Nowhere near as good a singles year so far in '05 as in '04 (Big and Rich, Kanye, Franz, Modest Mouse, and some real good R and B, too).

― Chris O., Monday, 11 July 2005 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

well this is grim

― Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Monday, 11 July 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Kanye/diamonds probably.
I second signs and welcome to jamrock. Though I have the feeling that's probably been around since last year.

― Bn1, Monday, 11 July 2005 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, "Since U Been Gone" for number one. For evah!

― bg (creamolafoam), Monday, 11 July 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

― fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's better than Lose Control

― A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Gorillaz, "Feels Good"
Kelly Osbourne, "One Word"
Kelly Clarkson, "Since U Been Gone"

― Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally, I don't like Since U Been Gone AT ALL, but whatever.
One Thing, Hollaback Girl, Oh, Sign, Wait, Feel Good Inc all seem like reasonable choices though.

― Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sugar (Gimme Some)" is currently the toppermost. Competitors are "Since U Been Gone," "Mr. Brightside," the Ying Yangs' "Live Again" if they release it as a single (up at the hut if you haven't heard it) and god I hope there's another classic that pops out over the next few months. No reason to think there won't be.

― miccio (miccio), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

gah, fucked up the link, there ya go.

― miccio (miccio), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

See also: still tippin', trapped in the closet, sex in the kitchen, girlfight, bucky dun gun.
XPOST, yeah, I forgot about Sugar. And that Live Again track is MIGHTY catchy.

― Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Rinôçérôse "Bitch" and Kelly Clarkson "Since U Been Gone."

― Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i do get the love for lose control! i like e2-e4 and clear, and the song makes good use of the samples. xposts galore

― fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i never understand this question. do we have to restrain ourselves to songs released as singles for questions like this?

― sean gramophone (Sean M), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Others: "Random" Lady Sovereign, "1 Thing" Amerie, "Chuy" Bunky, "Beverly Hills" Weezer, "Nu Nu (Yeah Yeah)" Fannypack, "Wrait Pinned To The Mist (And Other Games)" Of Montreal, "Kirsten Is A Fuckmachine" Tiger Tunes, "Indie Boys (Don't Deserve It)" Queens of Noize, "It's For You" Out Hud, "Be Mine" Robyn, "Konichiwa Bitches Robyn, "Oliver Square" Cadence Weapon, "Lefty's Lament" Busdriver, "To My Song" Captain Comatose etc, etc

― Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Trapped In The Closet Parts 1-5" R Kelly too!

― Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean: _I_ am. Otherwise, Gwen and Dre's duet, MIA's $10 and Ciara's Hotline are frontrunners as well.

Xpost: REALLY, Matt? 'Beverly Hills'? Hoo boy, I can't stand that.

― Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll second "Live Again," Anthony. Though I'm personally ga-ga over "Badd" and "Ghetto Classics," too, though the latter prolly wouldn;t get released to radio -- it's pretty retro.

― Chris O., Monday, 11 July 2005 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Lose Control samples E2-E4? Holy shit. Didn't notice.

― A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

We forgot to mention, that's the Maroon 5 guy on the "Live Again" hook. Weird ...

― Chris O., Monday, 11 July 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

'Don't Cha' / 'Hollaback Girl'

― Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't 'Lose Control' also sample K'Werk's 'Numbers'?

― Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"we belong together," "mvp" and "don't cha"

― Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't 'Lose Control' also sample K'Werk's 'Numbers'?

Not unless Cybotron's 'Clear' did (I thought it just did something very similar but not actually straight sample).

Where's the 'E2-E4' sample in 'Lose Control'?

― Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

in the chorus

― fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

3-way dance between:

Will Smith - 'Switch'
The Shortwave Set - 'Is It Any Wonder'
Amerie - '1 Thing'

― BARMS, Monday, 11 July 2005 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think anyone's mentioned:

Shooter Jennings - "4th of July"
Bloc Party - "Banquet"

Those are both right up there for me.

― Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

my actual #1 would be "1 Thing" though.

― Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Trapped In The Closet" parts 1-100

― Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Banquet" is pretty good, but coming after The Bravery and a-Ha at the club on Saturday night it killed my dancing momentum.

― Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

HOUNDS R VLUVV

― William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Alfred and Matthew for posting who "Since U Been Gone" is actually by. Like stevem I've not heard it (or indeed heard of it hitherto).

"1 Thing" for me so far, probably (although Daft Punk's "Robot Rock" - f*** all u haterz - runs it v. close).

― Jeff W (zebedee), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Spielerfrau - "I Kill Everything I Fuck"

(#2: LCD Soundsystem - "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House")

― Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Lose control, Blue Orchid, Human after all, Bitch and Hope there's someone are my high five songs so far this year.

― Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind "Banquet" being eligible for the second year in a row. If there's room, I vote for it in this year's P&J too.

― Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 11 July 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hollaback Girl

― Mind Taker, Monday, 11 July 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the game feat 50 cent - hate it or love it

― jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Feel Good Inc among the mainstream stuff. Can't think of much

Whatever the next two SFA singles after laser beam are (LB is actually s good nomination)

― Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 11 July 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

R. Kelly's "Burn It Up," maybe? Mannie Fresh, "How We Ride" or "Real Big"? Or "1 Thing," or "Since U Been Gone," or "Your Little Hoodrat Friend," or "Pon de Replay," or "Hate It or Love It." I feel like it's been a much better year for singles than it seems - even lesser stuff like "Ron Artest" is really good.

― Daniel Cohen (dayan), Monday, 11 July 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Of Montreal, "Kirsten Is A Fuckmachine"

this had me scratching my head a bit, til i noticed what the comma was separating

― shine headlights on me (electricsound), Monday, 11 July 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Clor's Love+Pain, Art Brut's Emily Kane; I can't believe I forgot Ron Artest and Robot Rock

― Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I still worship at the foot of Ciara - "Oh". That slinky, molasses-like groove, brilliant melody in the chorus, Ludacris' little false echo thing ("different color whip...whip...whip" - take that, Kells).

Hon. mentions:

Amerie - "1 Thing", Kelly Clarkson - "Since U Been Gone", Missy "On & On" and "Lose Control", White Stripes - "Blue Orchid" (best thing they've done in YONKS), Common - "The Corner", Weezer - "Beverly Hills", Tweet - "Turn The Lights Out", Lady Sovereign - "Tango", Crazy Titch f. Keshia - "Gully", Mike Jones - "Still Tippin", Kano - "Brown Eyes", Beanie Sigel - "In The Air"

(Also to whoever asked, "Lose Control" samples Cybotron - "Clear" which in turn samples the steadily upward spiralling synth from Kraftwerk's "Hall Of Mirrors". The famous track sampling "Numbers" this year is Coldplay's "Talk" from X&Y.)

― yuengling participle (rotten03), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Killers - "Mr. Brightside" (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)

― The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i just realized i only have five American rap singles there, and two are from Missy. What happened to rappers this year goddamn it? (ok i forgot to include Juelz Santana - "Mic Check", but still)

― yuengling participle (rotten03), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont get the love for since u been gone at all :\

"Since U Been Gone" = "Toxic 2005"

― MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Of Montreal - "So Begins Our Alabee"

― Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems like my single of the year is always a remix - right now it's probably the Soulwax remix of LCD, and if it's not that it's probably either the JLC remix of "Mr. Brightside" or Tom Neville's mix of "Negotiate With Love".

My favorite proper track is probably either "1 Thing", "Retreat", or "False Palindromes".

― James.Cobo (jamescobo), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe I'm the only one who thinks "Little Sister" is the best single of the year so far.

"1 Thing" is a great song and all, but this is ridiculous. You'd think it was as good as "Crazy In Love" or something. And it should have been obvious by now that "Since U Been Gone" is absolutely going to win the 2005 critical crown. Not quite the "Get Your Freak On" of 2005, but it will be closer than anything else has come so far.

― billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont get the love for since u been gone at all :\

"Since U Been Gone" = "Toxic 2005"

Except this time, the song is actually good.

― billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I really really like "Little Sister" too, its just it's no "No One Knows". xpost by God "Toxic" is so much better than that song

― A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Little Sister" makes my top ten so far, definitely.

― miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That look Josh gives the camera towards the end of the video is so hot

― A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Solid Gold
---------
Missy Elliot - Lose Control
Bjork - Triumph of a Heart
Ciara - 1,2 Step
this in particular over any of her other variations on it, heard it out LOUD in some godawful North East club dive... split my head clean in two with it's feather-light electroness. I was awed. And only somewhat drunk.
Robyn - Be Mine, Koniciwa Bitches
xpost - Matthew C P is 'KB' actually a single anywhere? They are smoking crack if they don't release it!

Okay, but not quite so special for me
-------------------------------
Will Smith - Switch
Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc
probably wouldn't include any of these if I wasn't really scratching my head here. I v.much doubt Gwen will ever top her moment here.

Shitlist
------
Rachel Stevens reliably dull and pointless in the '05, 'Signs' is just awful, and '1 Thing' is this years 'Crazy In Love' by default and very little else. Meh.

"Behind These Hazel Eyes" is nearly as good as "SYBG" ... where is the love?

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but my fave just might be The Killers' "All These Things That I've Done". Either that or M83's "Don't Save Us From the Flames".

Please tell me you get to vote in P&J.

Sadly no, as I am not a rock critic I cannot vote in the Pazz and Jop thingy. I'm just an ILX guy.

― Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 17 July 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm confused. Was it techinically a single this year (I think it was in the UK) or what? That's my choice if it counts as 2005.

― Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 17 July 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

""Behind These Hazel Eyes" is good, but it also kinda sound like, I dunno, Stacie Orrico or somebody."

Yeah! Stacie's "(There's Gotta Be) More To Life" was awesome!

For me it's a toss-up b/w "Mr. Brightside (JLC Mix)", Roll Deep's "When I'm Ere", KT Pearl's "Mr DJ"

― Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 17 July 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The JLC Mr.Brightside is remarkable - I can't ever remember a remix flipping me from hating a song to loving it (well, its remix) to this degree before.

― Tom (Groke), Sunday, 17 July 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

1) Gwen Stefani - "Hollaback Girl"

2) Ciara - "1,2 Step"
3) The Killers - "Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)"
4) Gordyboy - "A Hidden Forest" (Is this 2005? That's when I first heard it)
5) Basement Jaxx - "Oh My Gosh"
6) Fischerspooner - "Just Let Go"
7) The Bravery - "Honest Mistake"
8) Kelly Osbourne - "One Word"

i dont get the love for since u been gone at all :\

"Since U Been Gone" = "Toxic 2005"

I don't get it either. I'm seriously starting to believe that SUBG is not the song that I think it is. What I remember is that it sounded like a below average Avril Lavigne song.

Steve, The Feist is gonna have to wait or you can ask one of your dance buddies for it. My iTunes got wiped out while I was sending :-(. How's the Cagedbaby?
