I'd like it of it also had the Snub interview I always remember where Barney was completely ripping into "that bongo guy, waving his flags and wanting to be jesus"

Another key snub moment = Mondays video for do it better (live)

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 27 June 2001 03:14 (twenty-four years ago)

four years pass...
From billboard.com via worldinmotion.net:

New Order has rounded up 22 music videos and a 1993 documentary for the upcoming DVD "Item," due Sept. 13 via Warner Music. According to a spokesperson, one disc of the package includes clips for such classic tracks as "Blue Monday," "True Faith," "Bizarre Love Triangle," "The Perfect Kiss" and "Regret," as well as two newly shot videos for "Ceremony" and "Temptation."

The other disc will house the documentary "New Order Story," which chronicles the group transformation from Joy Division into worldwide dance/rock superstars. The film was previously released on VHS but has been expanded here to twice its original 70-minute length.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 15 July 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Yes!! I'm so excited. Do you know if it will in include all of the videos?

Pete Baumann, Friday, 15 July 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

do they have more than 22 videos?

Hm, yeah, I suppose they probably do.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I haven't been to their website to see if there's any info about it.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

p-fork, dude.

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Pitchfork read about it from neworderonline.com and/or worldinmotion.net.

Here's the tracklisting:

Blue Monday
Confusion
The Perfect Kiss
Shellshock
State of The Nation
Bizarre Love Triangle
True Faith
Touched By The Hand Of God
Fine Time
Round & Round
Run
World In Motion
Regret
Ruined In A Day
World
Spooky
1963
Crystal
60 MAH
Here To Stay
Krafty
Jetstream

Bonus - alternate videos and new videos "Ceremony" and "Temptation"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

For instance, this appeared on the neworderonline.com messageboard on June 29. Pitchfork is not the official news source for everything.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

"60 MAH"! Awesome.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

HOLY SHIT SHERLOCK

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Is that for me?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

"60 MAH" sounds like overenthusiastic kissing.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

no it's for the other snarky pendant painting the fucking roses red

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

If you read Pitchfork regularly (we know you do, sexyDancer!), or any music news publication for that matter, you've likely come across a lot of recent New Order news. Between coverage on Waiting for the Sirens' Call, festival and other live appearances, remixes, and a possible outtakes album, practically every witty introduction for a New Order piece has already been thought up and written down, so we'll save you the trouble and get straight to it.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Friday, 15 July 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Fucking sweet. Marking my calendar for that!

Ian Riese-Moraine: the crown prince of understatement. (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

You're calling me a snarky pedant?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

I love New Order, but their videos are a bit shit...

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

That statement makes absolutely no sense to me. We've done this on other threads, but several of their videos are some of the best ever.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Personal thing then; noe of them crack my top 10

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Friday, 15 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

This thread devolved in a rather odd fashion. Back to the business at hand. I am so very excited to be able to watch in these in full DVD quality!

Confusion
The Perfect Kiss
Bizarre Love Triangle
Touched By The Hand Of God
Fine Time
Round & Round
Run
Regret
World

I enjoy almost all the others.

And the documentary is astonishing - although I actually like the shorter version a little more!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I think the only crappy New Order video I remember is "True Faith". The rest are amazing... I even smirk at the "World In Motion" video. The inclusion of the "Touched By The Hand Of God" video alone is making me itch for this.

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm excited about that one too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm ridiculously excited to see a video for Ceremony! I love that track! In both of its forms.

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 15 July 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Are the live videos 316 and 511 from Rhino any good?

nickn (nickn), Friday, 15 July 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Haven't seen 511 but 316 contains the Taras Shevchenko show from 1981 which is amazing.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 15 July 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, I will be getting these eventually.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 15 July 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

511 is alright, but its old geezer new order if youre not into that stuff. It sounds great, but I think they sweetened it up a bit in post.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 15 July 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

in other words, lots of shots of Barney running in place and yelling "woooo" in the middle of songs

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 16 July 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to drink a toast to Dan, for starting a new thread and not making us load that insanely long one which I won't name and most of us know by now anyway.

Hey Barney's "woo" is every bit as captivating as any rock and roll non-word Iggy Stooge ever belted out, as far as I'm concerned. If you're there's a NO gig and with Barney woo's going on, things cannot be all bad.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Saturday, 16 July 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Besides, isn't "woo" the reverse of the tried and true "owww!"/"ooow!"

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Saturday, 16 July 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

The new Brian Eno album is FANTASTIC.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Saturday, 16 July 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

316's a classic video just Barney (in the more recent concert on the DVD) singing, "But if it wasn't for your big penis, I'd be a heavenly person today!" while cupping his balls. So naughty -- but then again, what do you expect from someone who designated the original working titles of "The Perfect Kiss" and "Touched By the Hand of God" as "My Cock is as Big as the M1" and "I Got a Whank off a Girl With a Spotty Back", respectively?

Ian Riese-Moraine: the crown prince of understatement. (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 16 July 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

neworderstory on DVD! hurrah. about time too. i have it on VHS, but no longer have a player :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 17 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

so the neworderstory is good? how does it compare to 24hr party people? Way betteR? I always hated the happy mondays stuff in that movie..

richardk (Richard K), Sunday, 17 July 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

It's amazing, but it's a documentary as opposed to whatever 24HPP is.

My favorite Happy Mondays video moments are the "Wrote for Luck" video shot at the Hacienda where Shaun is just completely out of his mind, and also the G-Mex concert which sounds great (especially the drums).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 17 July 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

neworderstory is a joy. it's a stylised, dreamy and otherworldly doc about the band. i can't remember who made it, but it's very lovingly done and interviews all the major players; it's the source for my theory that gretton was the great force behind the band, more so than, er, the band themselves. watch it and you can't fail to love him.

it also has a heap of videos in it ... which, of course, means there's gonna be some serious-ass duplication with the other disc. still.

i'm intrigued as to what the extra material to "expand its length" (ooer) will be. perhaps i should check out NOOL ...

... nah, fuck it.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 18 July 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

My favourite bit in neworderstory is in the Keith Allen quiz show.

KA: Who's the laziest member of New Order?
SM: Ian Curtis, he hasn't been to a rehearsal in fuckin' years.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 18 July 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

i am so excited about this.

but it's very 'early 90's' neworderstory isn't it? there's a bit where Bono shows up in full 'Fly/ Zooropa' mode on a hand held, i mean
you don't get much more 'early 90's' do you??

neworderstory was of course originally broadcast on the day and time that they were actually playing on stage at the Reading festival ('93) fact fans.

that american woman's naration does my head in a bit.

piscesboy, Monday, 18 July 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

I hated the narration at first, but now I love it - it's significantly expanded in the 2 hour + version I have (copied from the Japan LD).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

it's like a superpostmodern frozen yogurt ad

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I suppose there will be a Snub DVD eventually, when everything else has been milked dry. After "Jools Holland Later... Bands with Congas".

I would like to see that Happy Mondays schools programme again.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

Excellent news. and i just actually watched NOS yesterday. whoah.

I'm assuming most of the interviews were 93, for a band that supposedly really hated each other at the time, they were pretty chummy and giggly for it.

Other good bits: Regret with the cast of Baywatch. David Hasslehoff!

the "audience" booing Wilson.

Bernard's story about Stephen being more upset about getting some fags rather than getting Ian to a hospital after a fit.

Viz (Viz), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Tigerstyle Shamanic Vision Quester (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Amazon now has it for pre-sale with a Sept 13 release date! People who have pre-ordered from Amazon before - have you received the item on the actual day of release? before? after? ???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Hit or miss but usually it's the day of for me. Never recalled getting it more than a day or two late.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

That is not good enough! Not with Amoeba/Virgin etc in the neighborhood!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Have to go with Ned. They might be better with certain media than others.. I remember receiving my SCTV Vol 3. DVD set over a week before it hit the stores, for a good price.

Then I remember ordering the latest Can reissues on Amazon, and they were still in limbo, even on retail release date. So I called Easy Street that day, they had them each on sale for $2.00 cheaper (minus shipping of course), so I cancelled the Amazon order, and got them at Easy Street after work.. instantly and for far less.

shrug.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

And to celebrate, another Best Of? Hmm.

carson dial (carson dial), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if that Best Of is legit. That's really what they should've put out instead of International, if so.

I might buy it, because I suck.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

It's definitely forthcoming, but I've only heard about it through Warner Germany. I don't see why it wouldn't be released in the UK and USA.

Well, Saville's had his ups and downs...

I dig that cover, yeah

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the cover is really great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

'item'! ha!

hard to remember who started this idea of call-a-spade-a-spade marketing, was it pet shop boys or new order?
i mean u know calling your video collections 'performance' and your fan base 'fan base' etc etc.
did new order start this or pet shop boys?

piscesboy, Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

The Best Of is coming out in the UK, I'm told that it's a contingency because the last proper album has not sold as well as expected.

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Were they really expecting huge sales?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

WEA? Nah... :)

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

peter saville lives in his studio on a camp bed, by all accounts. he prefers it that way, apparently!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm told that it's a contingency because the last proper album has not sold as well as expected.

jesus wept. i'm beginning to hate what used to be my favourite band. how many best-ofs does one need? and ... what kind of excuse is that? "the last album didn't sell, so we're going to rip everyone off by trying to sell them the same old fucking 20-year-old songs again?"

christ. it's embarrassing. that funny whooshing noise you hear is rob gretton reaching light speed as he spins in his grave.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 18 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Grimly OTM

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I'd consider the new compilation to be a second Substance. It's certainly the only essential compilation they've released since.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 August 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

that's exactly what i was thinking! no twelve-inch versions! i want this dvd yesterday.

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 18 August 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

*xpost*

It depends, grimly; if it truly is 7" singles only, then it's a good deal for people who couldn't get their hands on things like the Temptation 7" (or the fabled Blue Monday edit, if it truly exists). And, if the tracklisting is to be believed, it even has Run2 on it!

*crosses fingers and hopes against hope for the original Ceremony*

Also, might it not be the label's final decision rather than the band's? "Sure, we'll release your next album, *if* you let us put out this new Best Of"

carson dial (carson dial), Thursday, 18 August 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

The original Ceremony with Ian Curtis, or the original Ceremony without Gillian but with Bernard singing? I might be mistaken, but I think both exist.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

Actually, is the version on Substance any different from the 7" single? I have both, but I can't remember if they're different. Maybe the 12" is?

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

"Ceremony" page from the neworderonline.com discography.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering how much later the "12"/Gillian/Substance" version was recorded. It's so much cleaner sounding. I never understood the hard-on people have for the 7" version.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

I even like the live Joy Division versions better than the 7".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

OK, I'm an idiot. I pulled out the 7" and it's definitely different. I'm still not sure if my turntable is acting up or it's really wobbly at the beginning! It almost sounds like the record slipping, but I think it's part of the actual recording. I have the 7" gold sleeve version, although it looks more bronze-ish.

Has anyone ever questioned whether Substance really has the best CD mastering? I mean, it was over fifteen years ago and a lot of studios were still not the greatest at getting optimal sound out of the new format, I sometimes wonder if it could use a retouch. I think some of the Hannett production got blurred a little, at the least.

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. Things sound so great and Sumner seems like a stickler for that kind of thing (unless of course he was out of his mind during mastering).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

You can get Amazon UK to send you an email when the release date for the DVD is announced.

Best of looks OK to me, but the Arthur Baker 1963 wasn't released as a 7 inch or anything else, was it?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 19 August 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

This is the 4th best of in 10 years, right? For two lps... It does seem more alluring than 'Best of' and 'Inetrnational', but still...

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Were you counting "Retro"?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

but the Arthur Baker 1963 wasn't released as a 7 inch or anything else, was it?

i have it on CD single, if that's what you mean.

i'm sorry, though: this is just unforgivable dead-horse-flogging and new order can, quite frankly, fuck off.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I'd foreggoten 'Retro' so that's 5 then.

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

forgotten, even

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

are you typing on a train?

Yeah that 1963 single, got both parts at a tabletop sale. Many many remixes...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

I thought it had only come out on Retro. But I am wrong.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 19 August 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm missing the part in grimly's screed where New Order is holdong a gun to people's heads and forcing them to buy this new compilation.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

oh, come on, dan: it's insulting enough that they keep churning them out. i mean, other than a few teenagers, can there be anybody in the whole world who wants a new order best-of and doesn't have one? and even these few teenagers are kinda spoiled for choice.

at this rate they're going to end up putting out a best-of after every album, just for the sake of two or three singles.

also: this is new order, for christ's sake. they used to be the coolest band on the planet. this is most definitely not cool. i appreciate how they spent more than a decade not making anything like the cash they should have done, but FFS: is this shameless greed really necessary?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

For a band that has always been better at singles than albums and, as a result, has millions of different versions of their singles scattered all over the place in accessible and not-so-accessible formats, it makes complete and total sense that they would be continually trolling through their back catalogue and repackaging different versions of said singles from an artistic standpoint as well as a commercial standpoint.

In summation, I'm sorry New Order slept with your mom but really, she hasn't stopped grinning since. Maybe they weren't lying when they said they'd call.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

ha, I'm grinning now.

What about a nice big TV advertised K-Tel version of "New Order's Greatest!" with al four of them on the front cover smiling and jumping off a wall?

I'm serious!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I would probably buy that, Mark! Actually, this new comp is the first New Order comp I've been tempted to buy since Substance.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm guessing a B-side comp will be next.

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

When Retro came out they said they had wanted to put a box out with all the 12" singles. Perhaps they are doing it by stealth. Only 7"s instead.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

how can naked greed and the repackaging of the same old bloody songs be *artistically* valid? surely the artistically valid thing to do would be go off and write a heap of new songs that were all of the standard of "crystal", "here to stay", "waiting for ..." etc.

you're far too soft, dan. far too soft. new order are flicking the Vs at us lazily from their big pile of cash, and you're throwing more tenners at them. pah.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

More money for New Order. That's what I say.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

That's the price of love (can you feel it?)

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

i preferred 'em when they were starving. that was their golden era: when all they could afford was a broken prophet 5 and a sheet of acid.

they should take a leaf out of saville's book. kip on a mattress in a studio. pah. etc.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

How much cash DO they have, anyway? Based on Peter Hook's comments scattered throughout the 24HrPP DVD they're still pretty cheesed at Factory's handling of the money way back when...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

I agree w/ grimly, more-or-less. seems v. cynical to repackage over and over. definitive, definitive, definitive. I don't really buy into best-ofs, though, usually.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

i preferred 'em when they were starving.

That pretty much says it all, doesn't it?

"You should suffer for my entertainment" is maybe the most selfish, irresponsible and punchable form of fandom that exists. Three cheers on being an up-your-own-ass knob.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

sunkist is the one

mike h. (mike h.), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm sitting here at work cutting together NO tracks for what will eventually be the TV ad for the best of album (that's me job.)

For what it's worth, I think us NO fans are all besides the point, WEA are no doubt aiming at the untrendy Supermarket buyers market.
After all, that's where the money really lies in the world of mass market back catalogue best of's and compilations, We (ILM) as a target market are mostly off the radar.

As far as I can tell NO won't be promoting it and have no part in the project at-all apart from giving it the go-ahead.

It doesn't change the fact that it's dead uncool of course, but it's odd to feel excluded, don't you think?

mzui (mzui), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I remember that 1993 doc, Dawn and I got back from seeing them at Reading Festival that year, sat down and the announcement pre prog went "So, for all you that can't see them at Reading Festival... " and we went "Ha!"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 August 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

RUN 2 is listed as being on '(the best of new order)' from 1993, but it is in actual fact RUN, and it's a misprint. so yeah if it IS RUN 2 then it's a reason to be cheerful as u can't get it on cd easily, but overall...eeh gads *another* compilation??!

piscesboy, Friday, 19 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Well, I think International was more suited for the Supermarket market than a double-CD starting with Ceremony and Procession.

Clearly the only answer is a 234215415 CD compilation called Stuff. It will be sold in the shape of a sleek black couch.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking about a 2 CD New Order live redux btw, only stopping at 1989.

mzui (mzui), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

That's fine. Next after that will be a 4 CD Siouxsie live redux. Please. Sir. Under pain of death. Er, sorry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Huzzah!! (but why stop at 89?)

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Was that the last New Order on Factory year? (Technique, right?)

i.e. the year before "World in motion"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

NO were on Factory through 1992, I think. Didn't the company collapse at the end of the year? And then Republic ended up surfacing on London.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Ned but I have no live Souxsie!
And my NO live stuff stops at 89.

mzui (mzui), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but was 1989 the last "New New Order" year?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Certainly the last year they were any cop live.

mzui (mzui), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Put on a great show at the Universal Ampitheatre that year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Reading 93 is a great recording. Some excellent versions on Montreaux from 93, Reading (i think) 98 was awesome with Heart and Soul and Isolation, rarely played since. But you're mainly right. They've actually improved on stage but the show is so rigid as far as the set list goes that you only need one CD to represent the live show from the last 4 years.

The Singles mix box set is specifically released in Germany but may get released in the UK. As far as i know, no plans to release it in the US. It would be the first time many of those mixes appear on CD and would be a welcome addition to my collection. I already have high quality recordings of every 7" A/B side and all 12"s but you can hear the vinyl crackle on some (not a bad thing) but i'd love to have actual CD copies of several of those mixes. The Ceremony 7" is loved so much because it's a raw document of the emotional state of 3 men who just had their entire world turned upside down. The tempo is slightly slower and the guitars are a bit harsher than the "regular" version. Same rule applies to the 82 Temptation. The 12" mix captures the essense of transitional New Order better than any other studio recording. The frailty and beauty of the 81/82 stuff is still emotionally captivating. These constant compilations are not for the fans, as mentioned above, but at least this singles set looks to include a few "never before on CD" mixes. That's good enough for me.

"You should suffer for my entertainment" is maybe the most selfish, irresponsible and punchable form of fandom that exists. Three cheers on being an up-your-own-ass knob.

oh for the love of god, dan, my tongue was seriously in my cheek when i wrote that. i thought that was obvious from the "pah" and the line about saville. of course i don't think they should suffer; as i've said on this thread and many times elsewhere on ILM, a.m.n-o and a thousand other places, new order were royally shafted by factory, and although the cachet of the label/the scene/the hacienda no doubt did wonders for their reputation, you can't pay the gas bill with a reputation. so yes, if they can make some money from best-ofs/collections/re-relases, then good on them.

but where does it end? "item" is a wonderful idea, if only because it's a way of getting "neworderstory" plus some bonus material. i will certainly buy it. similarly, i bought "retro" because it was an impressively hefty package, and the rarities (and a handful of the live tracks i didn't have) were attractive to me as a fan. my point with the new best-of is simple: "substance" exists. "the best of" exists. "international" exists. none of them are hard to get hold of. isn't it a little excessive to roll out yet another one - especially if, as was suggested, the reasoning is because WFTSC didn't do as well as they hoped?

in answer to ned's question: i don't think they can be short of a bob or two these days. i assume they now actually receive their publishing royalties etc, and they're still a working band. basically, i see this best-of as completely unnecessary. how about they wait till a couple more albums down the line?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

(although i'm absolutely serious when i say that new order - unlike, say, depeche mode, for whom the exact opposite is true - were at their best when limited by technology; when they were fighting to make the best of whatever was available, rather than having a studio as their oyster. but i apologise if my tongue-in-cheekness wasn't obvious enough above.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

As an uber-NO fan, and despite the fact that Peter Saville is the reason for my chosen profession, I never bought, and never felt like I *had* to buy International. I honestly don't understand the "cynical" accusations *at all*. I would never even level this against a band I don't like. Say, if Dave Matthews came out with a resequenced and repackaged best of ever couple years - who cares? Back catalogs are not a dead thing. Certain tracks may become more or less relevant over time. It will certainly introduce the music to some new people. We get new Saville artwork.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

i'm the saddo who bought 2 copies of International. Granted, i got both used but the French 2 disc set with 5 extra tracks and the US 2 disc with the DVD are both excellent additions to the collection. I also have both US and UK "Best of" CD's since they feature different tracklistings/mixes. Are we talking about 2 diff. Best of's in this thread or just the Singles Collection? The Singles Collection will have unique edits not available on CD before, therefore, it's justified. It's pretty easy, if you don't want the disc, don't buy it!

Question for fellow JD/NO nerds. Some vinyl versions of Joy Division - Still contain a live "24 Hours" (also the cassette version). Does anyone know if this has ever appeared on CD? It's not on the American Still CD and I don't think it's on the UK version either.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

No, not on the UK version either. I always wondered about that...

Not officially, no. It's not even on the Japanese version of Still which is 2 cds! (Yeah, I've got that one as well. Sad.)

I'm sure it turns up on a few boot cds.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Friday, 19 August 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

dan! thank you - but woah, there's nothing to apologise for! i think my post was probably lacking in the requisite humorous signifiers that usually suggest funniness. ("as usual," says the rest of ILM.)

a suggestion: is there a clear-ish difference of opinion on the new best-of between british and american fans? it occurred to me earlier. hmm. i wonder if we brits are just more curmudgeonly about these things; if we bought more into some kind of non-existent "new order are artsy and cool and therefore shouldn't make money" myth?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

no, i bought into that myth in America too. that ideal lived in my mind until Republic, when the Sly and Robbie mixes started to erode New Order's impecable reputation. New Order of old died with Rob Gretton.

biz, Friday, 19 August 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

yes. i need to let go :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 19 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

New Order of old died with Rob Gretton.

I'm sorry, but as much as I respect and admire Rob Gretton, he did not write or produce any of New Order's music. I'm sure he was a part of what it ended up sounding like and how it was packaged, but to say that New Order somehow died with Gretton sounds like hyperbole.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

i think the band themselves referred to him as a "fifth member", mind you.

no, gretton wasn't involved in making the music - but he seems to have been the keeper of the flame; the guardian of that intangible quality that made new order truly unique, rather than just another band.

but hey, i'm just bitter about them shagging my mum because i didn't like the last two albums.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

You need to get over it and enjoy at least the title track from the last one. It's the recent thing I'd put on a best of, but it certainly belongs there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

x-post, which i was writing while you posted, spencer:

(and, actually, i don't mind the last one. some of it's great.)

quite simply, my problem with new order is because i invested so much passion and energy and devotion in them as a kid, and they could never live up to that ideal. no matter what they did now, i'd probably not like it. it's my problem, not theirs :0

tacked-on extra reply: i adore the song WFTSC itself. it's a classic.

So really, will there ever be a definitive singles (12" and otherwise) collection with every possible remix? I need that badly.

matt2 (matt2), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

The idea of a boxed set of their 12" singles called Recycle has been bandied about for a long time (Rob Gretton's idea apparently). I just won something on eBay called Excerpts from Recycle, but I'm not even sure if it's an official release. Even if it is, it's nothing new. However, the DVD, new singles comp etc bode very well for this eventuality. I hope it's in the vein of the Duran Duran singles box - i.e. each 12" miniaturized to 5" with original cover art. I'll post back here when I get that CD in my hands.

WOW! - Excerpts from Recycle is GREAT. I think it's actually an official lost promo. It's not a CD-R and the sound quality is uniformally retail quality. Here's the tracklist:

1 Ceremony - 4:40
2 Temptation (seven inch version) - 5:21
3 Blue Monday (seven inch version) - 4:10
4 Confusion (rough mix) - 8:09
5 The Kiss of Death (seven inch version) - 3:05
6 Shellcock - 7:39
7 Evil Dust - 3:39
8 Vanishing Point (instrumental making out mix) - 5:10
9 Run2 (extended version) - 5:25
10 MTO - 3:48
11 MTO (minus mix) - 5:29
12 The Happy One - 2:51
13 Vicious Circle (new order mix) - 4:07
14 World [Price of Love] (tony garcia radio mix) - 3:29
15 Spooky (night tripper dub) - 6:36
16 World in Motion 96 - 4:55

I believe "Ceremony" is the original 7" versionl
One site lists the release date as 1997.

The Warner's logo and address all look legit and it just looks more properly "designed" (looks very Saville and it's quite original) than any bootleg I've seen.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

This can't be a promo.

"Run2" was deleted days after it was released, thanks to John Denver. A promo of it being released with stuff released 8 years after would make no sense.

I think you just got a really well put together bootleg.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Why would they delete the song "Run2" itself? Run "1", if you will, which appears on every copy of Technique and Best Of..., still violates Mr Denver's "Leaving On a Jetplane".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

There is nothing keeping "Run2" from release, in fact, it's listed as appearing on Best Of..., but it's actually the album mix. Here, it's actually "Run2".

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

The fact that "Run2" hasn't been reissued since makes me think there was something specific to "Run2" as opposed to "Run" re: the Denver lawsuit.

Well, either that or the band decided they didn't think the remix and its B-side were worth keeping in print, since they'd make less money from the song sales re: lawsuit results, I guess.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Lukas, on the interweb!

The fact that "Run2" hasn't been reissued since makes me think there was something specific to "Run2" as opposed to "Run" re: the Denver lawsuit.

There is no truth to that at all. They're not very different and the parts which sound like "Leaving On a Jet Plane" are unchanged (in fact it's just the beat which is slightly different).

"State of the Nation" looks like it was produced with "Shellshock." It shows Barney delivering an aggressive vocal.

Also, the Substance VHS has those great interstitials with "The Happy One". One other thing, the "Round and Round" clip on the 'Collection' disc is subtly different from the one that was on the New Order Story VHS. I haven't watched the new DVD to see if the other version appears in full on the extended doc...

Is the Perfect Kiss the full verion or the edit as found on the International Bonus DVD? Is True Faith the original or the 94edit with the extra live footage? I bought this yesterday but haven't checked them out yet.

biz, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Don't worry, I've always obsessed about that video and I doubt many people would have noticed!

Not sure about the "Perfect Kiss" video but it does have extended full credits at the end. The "True Faith" video does contain live footage, but I'm not sure if it was extended.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

"True Faith" looks like the version I've always seen, which I assume is the original.

Think "Perfect Kiss" is full as well.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Can't wait to rip the audio from "The Perfect Kiss", the video shoot version on the Retro bonus disc has problems.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah, seems like it shouldn't be possible but they actually sort of improve on the original.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

isn't there a slight glitch on the new DVD right before Gillian turns the knobs on that stack of gear? people have mentioned the slight glitch on NOOL a couple times.

I have the vinyl promo with TPK live video version MP3'd in excellent quality if your DVD audio rip doesn't work.

biz, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

ooooooh....

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Also, some of the interstitials say NTSC, I wonder if the UK videos were sourced from different tapes? The transfer seems to have been done very well generally - the later videos are pristine (but too much 'people-walking' stuff).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

All right, so after one trip through, I'd say

True Faith
Touched By the Hand of God
Blue Monday '88
Fien Time
Round & Round
Ruined in a Day
Crystal
Krafty
Regret (Baywatch Version)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

and obviously it's great to finally see the clip of the Taras Schevchenko "Temptation" that I've heard so many times.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Taras Schevchenko is available on DVD as New Order - 316

Classic:

Confusion

Spooky (Jesus! one of the worst videos ever)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Taras Schevchenko is available on DVD as New Order - 316

Yes indeed, get that sucker immediately.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I know, but I don't care nearly enough to get the whole concert DVD.

Agreed with the "Crystal (In Retrospect)" assessment. Wasn't a huge fan at the time but seems to have predicted the last five years of rock music videos (as well as naming The Killers and giving them the template for their first vid)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Yes indeed, get that sucker immediately.

It's a concert DVD. Regardless of how good the concert is (and it's good, I know) I can't imagine listening to it and thinking to myself "hm, this is good, but I don't think I can get the full effect without staring at pics of a sweaty Stephen Morris and a crouched over Peter Hook"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

You'd be wrong, actually.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Anyone received this from Amazon (US version)? I'm about to order since the local Best Buy doesn't stock anything worthwhile and anyone else would charge crazy prices, but they have something titled "New Order: A Collection" with different cover art. I'm assuming it's the same as Item, but...

And yes, the Taras Schevchenko concert is mandatory. If it bores you in any way, just turn up the volume and stare intently at the screen during Temptation.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I just got it at Best Buy for $20, so, yes, if y'all have a BB in the area, get thee to one immediately.

Best moment in The New Order Story: when asked by oafish host who's the "laziest member of the band," Peter Hook said, "Ian Curtis. That bloke hasn't done shit for years."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

The Amazon.com thing is the same double disc ($17.50). There are rumours that the UK and Europe discs will be sold separately.

The "oafish host" is Keith Allen!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Precisely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

It's no surprise that, even when he doesn't mean it, Bono sounds like a twat.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I can't imagine listening to it and thinking to myself "hm, this is good, but I don't think I can get the full effect without staring at pics of a sweaty Stephen Morris and a crouched over Peter Hook"

actually: hooky spends most of his time bolt upright, back to the audience :)

and it's all about barney. legend has it - and i want to believe this - that he dropped acid just before the gig, and begins to come up towards the end, just as temptation starts. certainly, there's a point in the song where he grabs for his mic stand, misses, looks fantastically alarmed, then grimaces and begins the whole "people ... need people ... like you" thing all over again. utterly fantastic. of course, maybe he's just pissed. or clumsy.

the LOOK he shoots gillian when she fucks up the guitar arpeggio in the middle eight of ceremony is priceless too.

god damn, i'm going to dig it out and watch it again. it kicks the ass.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I also love the psychedelic video still montage at the beginning!

Ned, are you hating on Keith Allen???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

That look during Temptation is Barney getting shocked by the microphone.

biz, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

He said that early on he had to drink a whole bottle of Pernod before singing.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

That look during Temptation is Barney getting shocked by the microphone.

[sound of illusions shattering]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Ned, are you hating on Keith Allen???

The only good thing I can think of he's done is playing the record company sleaze in 24 Hour Party People.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else read the liner notes? The DP on the "Perfect Kiss" video was the same guy that shot Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast!" Also, some tantalizing talk of an aborted final Michael Powell film.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's pretty obvious that if Barney had continued gripping that mic he would have touched the hand of god.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Ned, he cowrote "World in Motion" and "Vindaloo." He's also good in Trainspotting, Twin Town and Black Books, among other things!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Ned, he cowrote "World in Motion"

I like that song, but a number of NO fans here want it shot on sight, so I'd choose another defense. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

He does the N.O. Show bit on the documentary! Surely, that's coolness itself???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Ned, he cowrote "World in Motion" and "Vindaloo."

uhh....

Anyway, just about done with the doc. It's great, but the overlap with the vids on the first disc is a bit annoying, and I wish they'd do a bit more about the music of the band--talking about the significance of specific singles and albums and all. Still, good watch, and it'd be totally invaluable if it wasn't for the videos already being there on the first disc.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

and yes, I do know the doc is ten years old and the overlap can't be helped.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad they left them in, and I'm really extra glad they kept the same cover for the doc!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

god, that Republic-era artwork.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

"god" as in good or bad??

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

can only be bad when talking about the Republic art.

Great album, though.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

While watching the documentary I kept wishing there was more Gillian. Whether relegated to the sidelines by the three guys or her own modest temperament, her offhand witticisms and infectious giggling (at times I rewound the DVD just to hear it) teased me enough to wonder to what extent her subtle influence is missed on the reunion albums.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 22 September 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I always assumed she was sort of the lightweight of the band, but her absence might really have hurt the last two.

Next time I watch the doc might have to be with closed caption on, though. I missed a whole lot of the dialogue due to the accents.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 22 September 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I would just like to say again that the "Bizarre Love Triangle" clip is one of my favorite ever works of art (certainly Longo's most inspired work - and I'm already a big fan of his).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the only thing that bothers me about that video is the "falling" segments, which are a bit too "Back on the Chain Gang" for me. Aside from that, one of the most beautiful things they did.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

but her absence might really have hurt the last two.

DING DING DING. too fucking right. she was essential for the true spirit of new order (continues in same vein for ages until dan/ned/spencer/a passing googler punches him in the bolls).

I do love the way the whole video gets played over again in fast-forward at the end.

yeah, the only thing that bothers me about that video is the "falling" segments, which are a bit too "Back on the Chain Gang" for me.

Those always distract me as well, for two reasons:
1) they are so obviously on a trampoline
2) they aren't wearing shoes

Edward Bax (EdBax), Thursday, 22 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

But they are so 80s Longo Men in the Cities!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Wait uh ... they didn't remix all the songs in 5.1 right? So what, exactly, on the Collection disc is in 5.1? (as stated on the packaging)

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

The Keith Allen commentary, for that special resonance.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

So, I kinda breezed through the A Collection half of the 2-DVD set last night, despite my lack of better judgement to actually get some sleep instead... I had already seen the videos 'til "Blue Monday '88" thanks to Substance... and have vague memories of the ones after. Thoughts:

* "True Faith" is still the worst video on the collection. That said, "Spooky" may actually be worse. I have to play it all the way through and decide. Camp actors/actresses in excessive white make-up making funny faces in high-speed playback.. fine. I just couldn't make it through one minute of the "Spooky" video. Fashion mimes in motley slapping each other and hopping around doing sign language, on the other hand, is just something that should be abolished from music videos altogether, if i were Music Visuals Culture God. Philippe Decouflé would be sentenced to eternal solitary for crimes against music video culture. (Ha! looking at the liner notes, Decouflé didn't even like the song "True Faith", apparently! Granted, some really great videos can arise from the director/producer hating the song of course, but not in this case.)

* "Touched By The Hand Of God" is still the best video in the collection. It just never fails to put a smile on my face. I discover a new "move" I never noticed each of the band members doing the previous time.. that and the Salvation footage interjected in a non-sequitir fashion just makes this video possibly the greatest ever parody of an absurd single/soundtrack video by a late 80s "ROCK BAND". "Crystal" would do the same, updated, of course. Not as gutbusting as this, though.

* The rest of the videos are alright to GREAT!.. more on the latter side. the "60 miles an hour" video especially is noteworthy. Not sure about "Jetstream", but "Waiting For the Sirens' Call" is great, too. I'd never seen the "Run" video until now. I love how almost all of these videos are either strange, awesome, or both.

* The "Bizarre Love Triangle" video is probably a tie for best video here, on second thought. The part where there are bars of video remind me of the back of that one Pop Will Eat Itself album This Is The Day, This Is The Hour, This is This!... and hence early Designers Republic.. although I don't think the maker of the BLT video got later involved in DR, but I could be wrong.

* Transitions/intro stamps are awesome. I liked the original Substance ones, although they got a bit too "all right, this was cute the first few times" after a few videos. These are just great though.. how the vary from video to video.

* The wait was too long for this, but I can understand if they wanted to wait until they got a nice full DVD's worth of videos before releasing one. Yay!

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Also

* I LOVE the Baywatch version of "Regret". Just.. that juxtaposition. Given that I grew up around a mile from where that was filmed, it's just fucking bizarre.

* "World" is an underrated video. The continuous panaroma gliding around like a Doom engine enjoying a smooth B&W vacation on slow pace... nice.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

wish i could get copies of the videos of everything up to technique. past that is rubbish.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Well, they're apparently selling A Collection DVD separately outside the U.S. for the time being.. maybe they will be separated in the U.S. eventually (as Item is packaged as two seperate DVDs into a box)...

otherwise, A Collection will do you fine.. just stop playing the DVD about 60% or so through.

If its any empathy, I feel the same about that Flaming Lips video/clip DVD release. I really want to see the "Frogs" video, but I don't want to pay for what's mostly five(?) fucking versions of the "Do You Realize?" video and its ilk.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

The Collection disc features a build your own playlist function.

Also, the person who made the "BLT" video is Robert Longo who of course never worked for The Designer's Republic.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

God, the "live" (tv studio?) "Transmission" video on NewOrder Story is probably the greatest recorded example of Curtis' hypnotic stage presence. It starts out so slowly and then goes INSANE and by the end you can see he's clearly emotionally spent.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Fashion mimes in motley slapping each other and hopping around doing sign language

Who WOULDN'T want to see this? Honestly, how someone can love New Order videos in general and not this one is totally beyond me.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 24 September 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

also, can we talk about the new vids for "Ceremony" and "Temptation"?

I like the "Temptation" video a lot (though the second half gets a bit monotonous, obv.) but the "Ceremony" video is bizarre, even by New Order standards.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 24 September 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I like parts of the "Ceremony" video, but I have to think about it some more. The "Temptation" video is a little emo, but I like the avenue, all lined with trees even though it's the wrong song. I like how she puts on the record in the right place with the song.

Seriously, hating the "True Faith" video is like hating blowjobs.

I'm intrigued and slightly scared by what transpires in the afterglow after Dan's hot nights with fey mimes in turtle costumes slapping his dick around (after which they feign mime guilt with wide eye shock and mouth over the hand.)

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

The entire sequence where the mimes are beating eight shades of hell out of each other is celluloid perfection. (Anyway, isn't the only person in a turtle costume the woman doing the sign language? The pugilistic mimes are dressed like tinker toys.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Hmmmm, I guess you're right after all, Dan. the "True Faith" video is just like a blowjob... except in sign language in a turtle costume.

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

I love New Order, France and the absurd, but even I have trouble with the "True Faith" video (ultimately I like it, I guess). At least it's not as bad as "Spooky", the treatment of which must have read something like "imagine the most annoying thing ever, now play it fast and tinted purple."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Prince's evil twin on speed?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Have you seen this video? It's like the dictionary definition of 'irritating.' It's like that scene in Dumb and Dumber where the guys goes "know what the most annoying sound in the world is?" and then he does it; but here it's stretched out to 5 minutes and you watch it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Dan will like it???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Also Dan, I know you hate Bernard's vocal on "The Perfect Kiss" video, but I'm wondering if that's the actual video or the audio that came on the bonus disc with Retro because they're different.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

The "Confusion" video proves once and for all why NO comprise the 4 coolest people on earth. During a time when their English confréres wore bad makeup and sideways haircuts, NO's lead singer went to one of New York's most popular discos in brown khaki shorts. The expresssions on Gillian, Hooky, and Steve's faces as they watch breakdancers get down deserve comparison with D.W. Griffith's closeups of Lillian Gish.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

My inner 32 year old forced me to pre-order it from Amazon and then to buy it on the day of release at BestBuy anyway.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Is that singles comp the eagerly anticipated 'recycle' (all the singles with all the remixes in multiple cds) or another piece of shit one disc compilation of songs everyone else has?

I gave the DVD a spin last night for a couple videos and goddamn its great. The confusion video is so great just because of the whole NYC footage mixed up with some pasty ass brits running around. I let the LP version of confusion make me forget how good the remixes are.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

xpost to spencer -- I don't know if intense is the word.. maybe it's intense because it's essentially Cinema Verate Musica. You're forced to concentrate on the band members "recreating" the song "in the studio" which is mostly a lot of standing around and band members looking at each other going "Hmmm, ok, four more measures? right then", but then explosive moments (like Bernard on guitar at the end).

It's up there with "Touched" and "BLT"... very much a classic.

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

xpost: Singles is a double disc chronological retrospective of all their a-sides. Recycle may or may not be released at some point, but it would likely include all the 12" single versions and their b-sides.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

That's the magic touch there. Stephen and Bernard's glaring to the other guys wondering "ok, this is where i come in, right", Gillian looking solid and slightly bored, and Hook just confidently gazing at his bass.

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Stephen playing the croaking!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

What other band could make frogs croaking just sound naturally like part of their percussive palette?????

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Hahahah, yes. A beautiful moment. Will finally be getting this Friday or Saturday.

Dan has reminded me I should ask for that Lost set for Xmas.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

I love Stephen because compared to the two egomaniacs jostling for frontman recognition, he looks like the hardest to please, has the most devastating, understated wit, the one most likely to take the piss out of himself and the band, and is married to the most charming member.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

He comes across as such an eager and endearing *nerd* in the doc!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Can someone rewind this thread for me and confirm that whereas the US get 'Item', a double-dvd affair, we Europeans have to go out and buy NOStory and something called 'Collection' with a weird Jedi on the cover?

Baaderonixx and the hedonistic gluttons (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

Still not sure about that...

As part of ResFest Los Angeles, a good chunk of Collection will be shown at the Egyptian Theater on Friday at 7pm!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

Link!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

I see on Amazon US that the US also got the Jedi Collection thingy. What happened to Item and the 'neon shelter' cover?

Baaderonixx and the hedonistic gluttons (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

(Hahaha I still feel like I'm looking into an odd bizarro world where watching people stand around looking bored and singing out of tune is riveting entertainment but watching clowns beat the shit out of each other is beyond the pale!)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

If you order from Amazon US (like I did), you get Item and not just the Collection as it claims. It's a cardboard slipcase that has two dvds: Collection and New Order Story. Also, I'm assuming they screwed up and put the Collection dvd and booklet in the dvd case meant for New Order Story and vice versa judging from my experience and reports upthread.

The weird plastic bag head guy on the Collection cover is from the new Ceremony video that's included, as is the Item cover.

Interview with producer Michael Shamberg:
http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/summer2005/reports/substance.php

Shamberg is also building a Web site (www. kinoteca.net) that will contain his stories about the making of these videos as well as one special treat. “When I called Leos Carax” — the legendary French director of Les Amants du Pont-Neuf — “to do a video for ‘Crystal,’ he told me, ‘The video will be very cheap, but my fee will be very large,’” recalls Shamberg, who notes that Carax didn’t get the job. “Then one day he called and told me that he had gone ahead and made the video. It’s very funny, and it will be up on my Web site. It’s just him, his dog and his cat. It makes fun of music videos. At the end, his dog is sitting there with an erection.”

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 September 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

They have the "Item" cardboard slipcase with the skip image on it as an "exclusive" in HMV, for £24.99. But it's just the normal DVD packaging inside, from the looks of things.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I picked this up the other day, hoorah. Now to get the time to actually watch it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

was there another thread where we talked about the "sirens' call" single, then? i've been on holiday and the search is fucked, so ...

... anyway, FUCKING HELL, the secret machines remix of temptation is absolutely astounding. all the hissing menace of the original, plus chilling guitar sounds and cut-up/multi-tracked vocals. exquisite, quite frankly. and only 79 of your earth pence on iTunes.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 7 October 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

o, and the jacknife lee remix of sirens' is kinda mighty in parts too (those parts being the chorus).

gah, i suppose i should buy the richard X BLT too :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 7 October 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

The singles comp is £9.79 in Sainsbury's, if anyone wants it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 7 October 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

fantastic dvd - i'll buy i for "round and tound".
we get the brilliant "crystal" and the fantastic "60mph" but were there only 2 singles from "get ready" ?
i thought "Someone Like You " was a single but it might've been a promo only.

retrogurl, Friday, 7 October 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

so what's with the out of sync video on the "bonus" section of the collection dvd? the audio is about two seconds or so ahead of the video -- this is especially noticeable on the baywatch version of "regret" and the live performance of "temptation." (is this just my copy? i kinda doubt it...)

spasticheritage, Saturday, 8 October 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Not just your copy as others have mentioned it, but for some reason it's fine on mine. I think my DVD player might be using the 5.1 audio? or the other?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 9 October 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

i just checked and it's fine with the 2.0 audio, so the 5.1 must be the problem. weird.

spasticheritage, Sunday, 9 October 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I would like a full technical explanation of this from...hmmm, let's see... Michael "Non-Drop" Jones.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

No one's mentioned how wonderful the version of "Everyone Everywhere" from the 1993 Montreux Jazz Festival is. It's even more striking to catch Gillian at one point miming her guitar part.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 9 October 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I think Someone Like You was definately a single. Ive seen it in 12" at Record Surplus on Pico for ages.. just sitting there. However, I dont think they made a video for it. I dont know wtf London was thinking when they did promotion for Get Ready.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Sunday, 9 October 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Isn't there some kind of extended mix of Someone Like You somewhere?

I admit I haven't even begun to deal with getting this DVD yet. Like Ned I really don't have the time to appreciate it properly. And I'm honestly scared to think they ever made a video for Ceremony. I mean, that's just...wrong. I don't care how good it is, I don't want to see it. That song should never be put to video, unless it's a straightforward performance on stage.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Sunday, 9 October 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

If anyone wants to YSI this sensational remix, I'd be most appreciative.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 9 October 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

the temptation one? see, i bought it off iTunes so there are DRM issues. as i've just said on another thread: can i trust - say - hymn to remove all traces of "me" from it?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

No - "Someone Like You"

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 9 October 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

WHY DOES NOBODY CARE ABOUT THIS TEMPTATION REMIX, DAMMIT? :O

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 October 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

what do you mean - why wouldn't it have a video ?

retrogurl, Monday, 10 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

there's hot girls in "round and round"

retrogurl, Monday, 10 October 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

grimly, we desperately care but can't get to the damned thing in the US! I am trying, here. Just run hymn on the damn thing and YSI it!

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 10 October 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Grimly, that remix is horrible. The guy beefed up the drums and then sang along to the original vocal. His voice is terrible. It sounds like the engineer left the mic on when he was remastering the original and it caught him singing along. I don't know Secret Machines but i'll never listen to them after that rape of Temptation. You are crazy. End of story.

A gift for US fans of New Order. Fuck iTunes and DRM.

biz, Monday, 10 October 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

oh FFS, that would have saved me some time :)

This is the FOURTH and newest thread for requesting tracks for YSI/gmail

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

my YSI is the entire 7"s and the Promo CD. so you get all the versions released and all the ones not released!

biz, Monday, 10 October 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

anyway, more importantly: BIZ, YOU ARE TEH WRONG0R. but, sadly, i seem to be in a minority here. most of NOOL agrees with you, for a start. (mind you: most of NOOL are ... no, no, let's not go there.)

"his voice is terrible" is hardly a legitimate criticism when we're making a comparison with, er, bernard sumner, is it? i mean, bernard has one of the "weakest" voices in pop AND THAT'S WHY I LOVE IT. the harmonies, i think, work wonderfully. as do the extra sounds (the one at 0'45" sounds like a chill travelling down the spine), and ... ach, i dunno. i genuinely think it's awesome. o well.

x-post: ooh, there are unreleased ones? i'll be downloading right now.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

well, to be honest, the 3rd time i heard it, i didn't shut it off. a minor victory for the bastard track. it is the weakest of all the tracks on the release though. Why did that asswhipe think singing over Bernard Sumner would be cool? He should have just covered the song ala Erlend Oye - Cool MY Fire and submitted that. I would have appreciated it more but as it stands, it's a lazy, self-important sing-along that annoys the shit out of me. Nothing more to say than that. I can appreciate you liking the track, after all, somebody had to.

biz, Monday, 10 October 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

b-b-b-but ... the vocal cut-ups! the sequence cut-ups! the "zung" sounds! the "greeey eeeyes" at 2'12"!

harmonised remixes are teh way forward.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 October 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

The Secret Machines mix isn't terrible, but there's really no need to listen to it more than once (a problem with many New Order remixes). My main problem with it is the delay put on the guitars makes it sound like U2.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 October 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

heh, that's why i like it :)

and now i have a seven-minute version! cheers, biz!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 10 October 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Thanks biz!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 October 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Is the mix of Spooky thats in the video available on slsk? I prefer it to the original and it reminds me of the time when I saw the video being played in a Robinsons May when I was 14.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Monday, 10 October 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I have an answer to this somewhere, give me a sec.

the video for "the perfect kiss" may just be my favorite thing on the video comp.

i am having trouble getting though new order story.

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure what to make of the video for "ceremony". i really like it as a piece of artwork (it is saville right? it certainly has his style), but with the song, i don't know.

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah me too. It doesn't really seem to fit the mood of the song, but then again few of NO's videos ever do
'Temptation' on the other hand works better, esp since I totally know that record shop in Paris, making me feel all nostalgic...

Baaderonixx and the hedonistic gluttons (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

Neither are Saville, but rather directed by their longtime video producer Michael Shamberg.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Shamberg's good people -- the liner notes with the DVD talking about his working relationship with the band on many of their videos was great to read, and gives a sense of how a band can take charge of their visual identity in a number of areas by just having the right people to trust -- Saville obviously in one medium, Shamberg and his instincts for who to work with in another.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

thanks for clarifying...i should have just read the liner notes! i love alfred's "khaki shorts" comment upthread.

Tim Pope did most everything from "Let's Go to Bed" through the mid-nineties I think. Sleeve designers have included Porl Thompson.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

New Order played Warsaw and Shadowplay tonight at the Peel celebration. There's a video of Warsaw at Neworderonline. HOLY SHIT! Someone recorded the whole thing on video that's actually not all that bad! Will be broadcast on BBC 1 on Thursday. Someone with digital radio please record and share this set! This calls for a couple OMG OMG WTF WTF!!!!!!

biz, Thursday, 13 October 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Sleeve designers have included Porl Thompson.

Porl and Undy Vella (as Parched Art) did everything during much the same period as Pope was doing the videos (1984-1993ish) - Vella stayed on to do the Wild Mood Swings and associated singles campaign, then got dumped in favour of Robert and the photocopier in the back of the local newsagent.

I've got some buyer's remorse. I wish they'd just have sold the videos disc for $10 or so, because the documentary (yes, I trudged through the whole thing) was plain awful.

i am here to ask the experts: is pumped full of drugs worth searching?

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

The documentary is average to below-average. The band camaraderie put the lie to testimony from both the band and their handlers couldn't stand each other during the Republic era, and it was charming to see them laughing and drunk; but there were no musical insights or pungent reflections (Peter Saville and Quincy Jones came closest).

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

neworderstory is wonderful; you're all mad.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Tricky, by all means, please get Pumped Full of Drugs. It's absolutely essential. Many, many classic moments in that show. It's necessary to have Taras Schevchenko, PFD and Academy. PFD is probably my favorite live New Order dvd. Not as good as the Durutti Column DVD also filmed in Japan in 1985, but pretty fucking great.

biz, Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

thanks! i am kind of unhealthily interested in mid-80s new order at the moment so it's probably something i need to check out. it looks like there are bootleg dvds floating around...was it actually released on region-free dvd?

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

i believe the Japanese DVD is region free. available from amazon.jp as well as other sources.

i have a bootleg copy that is very good quality. bootleg copy of Academy on DVD too. They put on a great perfomance for that show.

biz, Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

After seeing the documentary, I have to say that New Order is a band I think I would have preferred to have cloaked in anonymity. Seeing them here made them seem sort of ridiculous, incongruous, accidental, parodical, dull, human, etc. Mystery seems to benefit them; they don't have the sort of 'rock star' appeal that most of their contemporaries had, and given their personalities, they seem an unlikely success story. While that sounds in theory like a good reason to find this documentary compelling, I don't really find that to be true. There are certainly isolated moments that warrant attention, but on the whole I find the whole thing a bit myth-destroying. Maybe it's just not a great documentary?

(also: why do the covers of 'item' and 'a collection' look like they was taken on a really cheap digital camera?)

richard wood johnson, Sunday, 23 October 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

also, why does everyone look pissed off and annoyed at the end of the "Perfect Kiss" video?

richard wood johnson, Sunday, 23 October 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

Why would they delete the song "Run2" itself? Run "1", if you will, which appears on every copy of Technique and Best Of..., still violates Mr Denver's "Leaving On a Jetplane".
-- Spencer Chow (spencercho...), September 12th, 2005.
