Beats In Space host totally sucks at interviews, right?

i've been listening to the B.I.S. archives and love the music and special guests but the host is about as interesting as a pine cone. maybe i'm missing something but this reminds me of my local college station where any moron can get a show, including me. wouldn't it be better if he programmed the words into Apple Talk and let the computer ask the question? How fucking hard could it be to open a web browser and get a translation service up to translate Superpitcher's critical word? Just a weekend rant about the moron asking the questions. Does he decide the guests on his show or is that determined by someone else. Just trying to figure out if he deserves partial credit for good taste or if he's a senseless monkey.

cutmasterKirt, Friday, 19 August 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

tim is a pretty fine dj in his own right. i kinda like that he's pretty low key interview wise, it's especially a nice contrast when diplo comes on and acts like a suburban superthug.

johnny and luther (johnny and luther), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

well, i haven't heard the Diplo interview but the Superpitcher + Prins Thomas interviews were cringe-fests. How old is he? He doesn't seem to have too much knowledge about the artists or music very much but i must be way off if you say he's a good DJ. I wouldn't call his interview style low key but rather severely unprepaired and boring.

so does he choose the guests are are they chosen for him?

cutmasterKirt, Friday, 19 August 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Tim is actually a disembodied head. He chooses the guests, but someone else spins the records for him for minimum wage. If he sounds subdued during the interviews, it's because his entire cranium is submerged in a nitrogen/formaldeyde solution for preservation's sake. And Tim, in fact, knows his shit - it helps that his blood isn't going anywhere besides his brain.
By the way, WNYU is in fact a college station, and it takes a special kind of moron to get a show there.

Armando Buttershucks, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

i've been wondering about this. the "interviews" are pretty odd. but it doesn't really bother me. i wonder if the guests are happy to just sit, play and not have to answer serious questions etc. or if they feel ignored etc.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Nobody in this thread could conduct a better interview. Be thankful he does what he does.

cdwill, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm a senseless monkey.

sorry the interviews suck. maybe I'll just cut them out of the archives from now on.

I liked that superpitcher interview though!

how did Tim escape from his jar?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Hey Tim. The problem with the Superpitcher interview is he was desperately trying to translate the title of that Tocotronic single into English to make his point but you seemed too concerned with moving the interview along. Didn't you have an internet connection where you could have used a translation service to facilitate the word find? The thing that got me riled up was hearing Superpitcher desperately trying to find the word to explain himself and you pushing him along into another pointless question. It also seemed like you were unprepared for the interview. Either way, good job getting quality guests on your show. I'm seriously happy to listen to the music and the would hate to see the interviews cut out of the archives despite my reservations about the quality of the interviews.

as for this:

Nobody in this thread could conduct a better interview. Be thankful he does what he does.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Let me say. HA! "Be thankful he does what he does"? Yeah, i wouldn't know about Superpitcher or Linstrom if they didn't appear on B.I.S. What service is B.I.S. providing that isn't already flooding the P2P networks? I can download hundreds of hours of killer DJ sets anytime i want whether Beats In Space hosts them or not. I'm quite certain having a 5 year old ask Superpitcher what his favorite toys were as a kid would be just as interesting as the interview at the end of his B.I.S. set.

SuperBitcher, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

come on! that superpitcher interview is one of the most entertaining things i've heard all year.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

pls. don't cut the interviews out! love, Susan

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

superbitcher, the interview is just a nice addition, we listen to beats in space because we like the music he plays and we like the way he plays it. I could download all those songs, or at least some of them, but that's missing the point, and you can download a superpitcher set from someone else but you know what, it'll be a different set. Tim isn't just hosting mixes, it's a LIVE radio show. And some of us even listen to the show live, on the radio.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

What service is B.I.S. providing that isn't already flooding the P2P networks?

to follow up my last point, there aren't a ton of radio stations in the greater NYC area playing this kind of stuff. Actually, there are two, WFMU and WNYU, and maybe Barnard. Not sure what the status of Columbia's station is. So having live DJ sets by the likes of superstars such as Lindstrom, Optimo, Superpitcher, Crazy Rhythms etc is quite a service.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Dan, I do wish i could listen to that Live on the actual RADIO and not have to download/stream them on my computer. However, my remarks were directed to the TimSweeny Asskisser i quoted who said i should be thankful that he does what he does, as if i couldn't find out about/listen to that type of music without B.I.S., which is complete BS. If i can't pick it up on the radio and can find sets as enjoyable or more so through other outlets, why do i have to give thanks to Beats In Space?

I will state here that i have overwhelmingly enjoyed listening to the B.I.S. sets i've downloaded and look forward to exploring more sets (Recommendations Here please!) in the future. I just wish Tim would capitalize on the opportunity and ask some good questions of his guests.

SuperBitcher, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I recommend the Crazy Rhythms appearance, especially the early set when only half of them were there, and later when the first half took over again.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

"the interview is just a nice addition, we listen to beats in space because we like the music he plays and we like the way he plays it." -- agree

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah stirmonster otm, that superpitcher interview was great and mr pitcher sounded totally at ease and as if he was enjoying himself, which for me is more entertaining than hearing him discuss who his influences are or whatever the textbook thing is.

also judging by BIS setlists (I don't always get to listen to the show live), and the Our Disco set, and the Backlash set he did for ourselves in Dublin, Tim knows his music plenty.

And I mean, on further reflection that Superpitcher interview pretty much was the first time I ever heard him talk, and it felt very like his persona, so if the main skill of interviewing is getting the subject to relax then Tim did fine.

(while we're here, anyone know what the techy track Superpitcher plays that samples "Plastic Doll" by Dharma is. it's not DJ T, though I know there are probably a few electrohouse tracks that sample that tune)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

hah, I emailed Tim asking him that and never responded. I couldn't remember the context enough to sort it out in the playlist.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

the superpitcher interview was so cute. it made me love aksel even more. so so adorable.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

you don't. unless someone has you at gunpoint, forcing you download the sets and praise tim loudly. is that what's happening? that's fucked up.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 September 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

I loved the Trevor Jackson interview. He's pretty spiky and irascible, but he's great fun to listen to.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 22 September 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm 99% sure the track that samples "Plastic Doll" is "Odyssey" by Steve Barnes & Riley Reinhold. It's much better than the DJ T track I'd say.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 22 September 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

but why not just play Dharma?!??!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 22 September 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

because it wouldn't be electrohouse if it wasn't gutting old italo records!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 September 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

hey, I'm a real renegade, I play the vocal version of Plastic Doll!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 22 September 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

I used to play it all the time but with how big electrohouse is here now, italo has got very very big and so so many 19-23 year old guys I know, who DJ, play all the sort of bigger italo tunes all the time.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 September 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

goddam those 19-23 year olds!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

19-23 year olds in ny are hip enough to know italo-disco is "cool", some even talk about actual records, but god knows I'd be delighted to see more then 5 people dancing in the same room! Hell, Alexander Robotnik performed live a few weeks ago and by all means it was a success, but it wasn't exactly crowded, you know?

Tim and I (and James Friedman and Jon Santos) are djing a performance tonight where Brion Paul gets drunk for the first time ever. First sip at 11pm.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

no idea who brion paul, is but with james friedman present, god help him!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Hell, Alexander Robotnik performed live a few weeks ago and by all means it was a success, but it wasn't exactly crowded, you know?

I was standing outside Love that night with some people and we couldn't figure out how the hell to get into the fucking place. They muttered and went on their drunken way and I stood there for a second more like a jackass before I realized what the damned arrow was saying. But, that crowd was pretty decent considering the cover price.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

that was interesting. It was fun and unique for a while, then kind of sad. I thought it may be a put on but well, if he was faking throwing up he's a hell of an actor.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 23 September 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

and why'd he have to go throw up when I was djing? No, god forbid somebody throw up while Tim Sweeney or James Fucking Friedman are djing, heavens no! But let Dan Selzer on the turntables and its a freaking vomitorium.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 23 September 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

that's what happens when you play those crazy rhythms, dan ;-)

willem (willem), Friday, 23 September 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the kind words people. The Carter track is from a CTI comp...the real shock of the evening is that I forgot to bring Carter's The Space Between CD, which was something I'd discussed with Tim some time ago that got us talking about this stuff.

dan selzer, Friday, 1 June 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

the chris carter is also on his 'mondo beat' lp. i'm really looking forward to downloading this. tim told me about it a few weeks ago and was super psyched. glad to see sweeney played 'sun flight' - that's one of my desert island discs. good work mr. selzer.

^^haha that episode was fuckin great

seeing Tim DJ tonite, super fuckin stoked.

technically i've seen him once before but he was opening for The Juan Maclean at a weird out of the way Chicago venue on a Tuesday nite as a blizzard had just hit, so it didn't really count

⚓ (gr8080), Sunday, 29 January 2012 06:42 (fourteen years ago)

ha I saw he was posting Hawaii pictures on Instagram and thought "I wonder if Grady will see him DJ"

I've seen him three times, always fun

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 29 January 2012 07:29 (fourteen years ago)

listening to the latest bis with juan maclean and it is hilarious , they got the guy from washington heights to call and juan gang-up with him against tim. also, great song to start the show even if it gets instantly derailed. house comedy podcast!

Sébastien, Saturday, 26 January 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

Victor seems like a combination of a real person mixed with one of the fake callers from the Best Show On WFMU. I don't doubt he works on Wall Street and all, but the constant bragging about himself (I make millions! I have parties every week with a 100 people!) combined with the death threats and the insults is a bit too much.

Really interesting/surreal show though.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 2 February 2013 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

i couldn't deal with the juan maclean bla bla, too annoying, didn't end up listening to that one.

really loved the latest with mika snikars and hnny, minimal talk thank god.

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 2 February 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

you know what would be ideal is the music stays the same and the show is hosted by fred rogers (r.i.p.)

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 2 February 2013 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

ok i think the deal is he talks to people like they're release schedules? workaholic

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:13 (twelve years ago)

i don't mind

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:14 (twelve years ago)

when did you last play new york, when will you next play new york, where did you last play new york, where will you next play new york, when were you last on the show, what label will you next release on, ehhhhhhhhhhhh, deep inhale into the mic, ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

he is laughable sometimes, but his show is still awesome and he is a great dj and i'm sure a great guy.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:16 (twelve years ago)

yeah he sounds really great!

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:17 (twelve years ago)

i always google these parties that people play in like phoenix or denver and get jealous.

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:19 (twelve years ago)

(daniel avery playing in phoenix ffs)

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:19 (twelve years ago)

the music is the absolute best though. it has annoyed me for ages that nobody here ever talks about it despite the fact you hear the best tracks way before anyone mentions them here.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:20 (twelve years ago)

god yes. i was so into the mika snikars set last week, reminded me of a cos/mes mix from last year i think. hnny might have been better even. new one sounds great so far (though it's late and i'm inattentive).

administrator galina (Matt P), Saturday, 9 February 2013 09:25 (twelve years ago)

tim is def a great guy!!

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 10:31 (twelve years ago)

did you meet him when he played hawaii? that sounded good when he mentioned it on the show.

i met him in dublin years ago and he was really nice.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Saturday, 9 February 2013 11:16 (twelve years ago)

yeah he came out twice last year actually. i didn't really get to spend any time with him but friends of mine were hosting him and he played the club I used to be a resident at.

met him once in Chicago early 2006 once too

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Saturday, 9 February 2013 12:13 (twelve years ago)

I don't know why, but I still sometimes imagine he has long hair.

Cool set Dan! No Paul Haig though? ;) Never heard Frederic Rzewski or Repetition before. Also awesome to hear Meredith Monk fit right in with all the beat-driven stuff.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 30 November 2014 02:54 (eleven years ago)

dan your set was really good!

currently listening to the 15th anniversary mix, the classics disc starts off with victor from washington heights of course.

electric sack butt (haitch), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 05:42 (eleven years ago)

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. The second half is a bit spotty and I missed playing certain stuff I wanted to get to, but Tim was kind enough to have already given me a ton of time.

I asked him if it was a song vahid thought it was and he said with the name I’d this thread he wasn’t going to help.

dan selzer, Saturday, 22 May 2021 22:05 (four years ago)

Excellent work xp

I was also searching for "trapezoid" as the title and guessed early 80s.
