This band are really boring. I can't believe that The Guardian wrote a fake article on how no-one writes good lyrics anymore, in order to give them hype as the only band around doing so, esp. for a shitty meta-pop song about other bands (Fake Tales of San Francisco) (OK I can believe it but....)

The singer has that really annoying 'check it out man I'm telling you THE TRUTH' voice that has become de rigeur in Brit indie, and they have that stupid half skanking motion that everyone seems to have today as well. They're like a muscular Libertines. I've got a can of lager and it's all lads together innit.

I think you should give the monkeys a chance, im not gona compare them to any other band because i think they are very unique! The arctic monkeys are real there gigs are out of this world. They dont take any thing for granted they are genuinly glad to be where they are know. Yeah so they are getting a lot of hype but they deserve it they are an amazing band that write graet songs lyrics every one can relate to!

Its unfair to compare the them to the libertines as they were SO different and so influencial to british music.However theres something special about this lot! Really enjoyed reading everyones thoughts on the artic monkeys. I discovered them through zane lows show when he played 'fake tales of san fran' and then a few weeks later 'bigger boys'

I have to say they are fuckin wicked and funny 2. can see why people are comparing them to the libertines in as much as they are british and good. But they are very different too.. for a start there northern and havent got some sort of romantic illusion with poppies/herion that carl and pete seemed to have.

I'm a big fan of the libertines self titiled album and the lad who wrote about that above is dead rigth.. its a classic already.

But there's no need to slag of a band for gettin hype.. if anyone had heard the interviews theyve done they sound like proper decent lads. good luck to em!

and that bird who shagged the lead singer.. haha quality! glad to see rock stars, even lads from yorkshire get groupies and shags back stage!

I'd never heard of these guys, name is a bit rubbish, but in a who is tipped to be big in 06 article in the Guardian yesterday they were mentioned by most everybody (well, 6 of the 9 people in the article).

Here's a movie of them performing. It's pretty interesting, they've got a lot of energy and expensive looking mod haircuts. There's an early Oasis vibe about them. This is all I've seen of them but I smell a phenomenon.

I don't understand the Arctic Monkeys appreciate either. I downloaded a couple of tracks about six weeks ago, and they went straight into the trash. Who has time for this kind of generic British indie? Of course, I see no appeal whatsoever to the Kaiser Chiefs, either, so what do I know.

In real life, I like the online "tastemakers'" picks way more than the print ones, frankly. Give me Fluxblog and Pitchforkmedia's darlings over the NME and BBC, any day.

That, for me is the nub. How much further inward can the horizons and expectations of mainstream 'indie' travel before the whole thing completely implodes? I think the answer is that it's already at that point creatively. The A*ctic Gibbons are not taking us on a fantastic voyage of "whoa! what was that?!" anytime soon.

The NME will be completely fucked (this time) if they fail to catch on to the next big wave of stuff more exciting than this piffle in time.

When students realise that the publication has less than 0.1% of a real clue about music (compare it with it's 1990's self even and it wasn't SO bad, even in the britpop/big-beat years ther was a smidge of diversity) and really is just a (grotty) lifestyle mag, they are as doomed as Melody Maker.

I could get into the Libertines, despite the complete and utter played-outness of the four piece guitar band/Pete Doherty is the indie Keith Richards narrative. Hell, I even like Oasis. However after downloading some of the 142 Arctic Monkeys tracks that are floating around the net, I only made it about 30 seconds through the first track before deleting the entire lot from iTunes. Thank you, technology, for saving me from spending $7.99 on the import CD single of this crap.

I thought Arctic Monkeys were alright on SNL. There was something very direct and unstudied about their performance, as opposed to other rock bands who appear on SNL (e.g. Fall out Boy last week) who look like they've been practicing rock faces & leaps in their bedrooms for the last month in preparation. They get points for being a little sloppy and for the lead singer pointing into the audience mid-song and saying "Hey, that guy just yawned."

Although they wouldn't exist without The Strokes as a precursor, in their favor AM are less fashion-layout-ready and display more musical agility. The Strokes had better songs, though (speaking in past tense 'cause their expiration date passed after the first album).

Verdict: Arctic Monkeys huge in UK, won't mean shit in the US.

The original five-track demo Arctic Monkeys CD I got sent 12/18 months ago was definitely less smoothed out than the album version. That horrible metallic drum clank at the beginning of "Dancefloor" was a noticeable annoyance. It's the equivalent of permanently having the "surround" option on your domestic stereo switched on; great if you want glare and "immediate impact," less for sonic subtlety, climaxes and grace.

This is another reason why The Drift comes as such a sonic delight (relatively speaking); the emotional peaks and troughs of the music are accurately mirrored and recreated (the truly cinemascopic drum avalanche at the beginning of "Cossacks Are," Donald Duck plus orchestra in "The Escape," etc.).

Indeed, Marcello, The Drift is, sonically at least, one of the most refreshing things I've heard in a long time. Scott was eager to mention in interviews how little compression they used during recording, mixing and mastering. (In fact he may well have said they used none.)

I was at the swimming baths yesterday and "God Only Knows" was playing - good place to listen to it, caverny Victorian high high ceiling and all - and I got to thinking about the famous sense of competition between Wilson and the Beatles. The idea that musicians take 18 months just working out new ideas, striving to surpass themselves or to do something utterly new...I can't think of any current parallels, really. (Maybe Radiohead but maybe not wholly successfully.) But it seemed to be accepted practice up to the mid 80s at least. And whilst it isn't the only way of making music, and it mainly seems to apply to Rock (although compare, say, Marvin Gaye's career to the way that each innovation in RnB now is made by a new act, or the producer that utilises that act) and it pains me to think it, and it isn't blanketly true or wholly negative, there is a MacDonaldisation of music that's accelerated over the last 10 years.

Which is off-topic, but came to mind re: looking at marketing and turnover of acts.

today is the first time i've heard the record. i'd only heard the look good on the dancefloor song before.

i guess i had low expectations.

a lot of it sounds like pretty typical u.s. indie rock w/english accents, but the best songs are pretty good. the lead dude has a good way about him sometimes.

They do have a pinch of charm about them, despite the cliches and hackneyed subject matter. Especially in comparison to their competition (ok maybe I doo need to hear the Long Blondes & Gossip albums too... ), enthusiasm though, is something that they don't quite spark in me.

Ive only heard a few songs and i think they're above alright, but not half as stunning as the hype suggests. My point is a dry one though. The 'working lads and lasses' et al who apparently will love this record, probably won't. The middle class fans (rock is pretty middle class these days, admit it!) who wish the proles would dig t'monkeys are missing one thing. Youth proles dig Mc'ing, rap, and other such genres, not rock! Round my area they don't anyway. Im afraid that the belief in, and empathy with the modern; 'gawd bless em workin' claas' which may give t'monkey's added cred, is a lie! Rock aint these kids main thing at all. Its just t'middle class kids hoping that a few kitchen sink lyrical snippets and regional accents might make it such. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. So there.

it seems like you could have any opinion of this band, depending on how charitable you feel like being and how much credit yr willing to give them cuz of how young they are.

i guess my default position is that every new "buzz band" of the UK is going to be a big huge pile of shit, so when something's kinda decent i'm all like "oh that's kinda nice, good for them!"

had to laugh at the reviewer here..what a shoddy review. Of course nothing in guitar based music is groundbreaking anymore,,its just impossible, its all been done before. However as someone who has not been particularly touched by anything musically since the Stone Roses debut this album is phenomenal, as good as you can get.

Wow, that's odd, when I bought a cheapo DVD player recently, there was a CD already in it when I took it out of the box... I played a bit of it and then put it away 'cos I thought it'd be some crappy compilation being given away as a freebie. However when I put it into iTunes just now it turns out it's the first Arctic Monkeys album... what gives?
