It's strange, because every SFA album reachead the top 10 since Radiator, even Phantom Power went 4th... Someone please clue me up.

I have never heard James Blunt but probably people are not bored with him because unlike the Super Furry Animals he has not yet given them five similar sounding albums in a row. I like the SFA but this is the first album of theirs that I did not buy. I downloaded it for zilch and found that there was nothing wrong with it but it is a predictable retread of stuff they have done to death before.

Speaking of beardy ex-psychrockers from ye olde days, how many albums into their career before ELO's brand of baroque neo-pop pocket symphonies became resistable to the publicoid? If the crystal ball is correct and Love Kraft is their Discovery, next two albums will be featuring overly commercial dance beats and bland filler, causing a break up, a 15 year absence then a complete non-seller reunion disc in 2021. Looking forward to it. No need for them to bother working with any ex-Beatles though. That thing they created with McCartney was quite enough for one lifetime, thanks.

I just find it difficult to work up any feelings, positive or negative, for SFA. They seem to be one of those bands who are perpetually around, so much so that one takes them for granted, but not enough for me to want to delve particularly deeply into their perhaps over-profuse oeuvre. Thus I didn't feel any great pang or need to hear Love Kraft and I suspect that record buyers in general felt the same.

I liked the first album, the Welsh-language album and RATW but can pretty much take or leave the others.

I guess it's because the last album was the wonderful "greatest hits" one, with the DVD.

This time round, no DVD and no big fanfare. Also, bad typography on the album sleeve seems to = kiss of death. (see Ocean Colour Scene etc although that's not a good comparison)

It'll be interesting to see how the singles perform. "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" was B&S' worst performing album since "If You're Feeling Sinister", but was easily their most succesful in terms in single performance (two top 20s). Indie's a singles genre these days, innit?

Phantom Power is in my local Fopp for £3!

The new album is brilliant. I'm a fan of the more spikey fast stuff but I have to say that this is now my favourite Furry longplayer.

I'm glad they've ditched the overt politics, it was a bit clanky, though they seem to have got it right when they do it with a sense of humour like with Lazerbeam which was supposedly inspired by a Tony Blair speech!

agree re the artwork/cover .. tis not good .. and i normally love Pete Fowlers stuff .. but this just doesn't grab you like the rest of the SFA covers.

also .. do you think the band actually care re chart placings ?

i reckon not - they have their solid-n-reliable fanbase and i suspect that they realise that thats as good as it will get at this stage in the game.

This isn't my favorite SFA album at all, but I can't believe people are in this thread claiming the band have been recording the same music for the past decade. They're one of the most inventive, consistently enjoyable modern rock bands out there. Completely uninformed opinions suck.

That's your loss. They're pretty much the most daring pop rock band there is and certainly much better than the majority of the dross that leaks out of the UK. They've attracted a lot of fans in the decade they've been around but have never been able to really get into the public eye. I don't think it has anything to do with the music, because it's all practically been critically acclaimed since their debut. They're just kind of everymen who don't seem to care whether or not they can create an Earth-shattering masterpiece. In a sense, yes, the band are just there, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Guerrilla and Radiator are two of the best albums of the ;90s, and their output this decade, especially with Phantom Power, has been really great as well. The album that should've gotten attention in 2003 was Phantom Power, not Hail to the Thief (talk about a band that's run its course).

Oh, and that Stylus review of Love Kraft is an abomination. It was poorly written and researched. It's a good thing no one gives a shit about that site.

I started a thread on an SFA board asking if this chart position mean the commercial end of SFA.
Not that I care about chart positions. I'm in agreement with the majority of that board that quality does not equal quality. James Blunts record is atrocious but cloth eared mutts are still buying it like Lemmings diving for a populist sea. Much like Blunt does in his video, pity there was water I say.
Lovekraft is a classic record, SFA's best, but maybe they are no longer part of the bigger picture, which means nothing as most SFA fans are lovingly independent souls anyway and would track down and buy an SFA record if it was scratched onto Welsh pottery by the hand of Max Boyce and only available from Lord Lucan riding Shergar as he passed by Seville. its probably the casual buyers who dont get this record or maybe it hasnt been marketed very well.
Bottom line is who cares, great records are still great records if they sell 1 copy or 1 million

The problem with Love Kraft is it's all icing and no cake. It sounds lovely but the songs don't bear up to all that window dressing.

The problem with SFA is that their fanbase is full of Kool Aid drinkers so there's no real need for them to bother putting out a good album. They put effort into recording something, it'll sell 80,000 copies. They knock out any old rubbish, it'll sell 75,000.

you're an idiot jenna. go back to your killers and mcfly albums you deserve them.

sony will never drop SFA as long as rob stringer is there. there have been talks amongst the band and stringer that they should part ways - the bands desire- but stringer won't have it. rob stringer, top dog of sony music uk, LOVES sfa. he's said before they are one of the only bands that makes his job worthwhile and he is very close personal friends with the entire band. course he should put some money in marketing to back his big mouth up. this album has been horribly marketed. it's an album full of some truly beautiful music. sfa aren't my favourite band but i believe in what they do and i respect the hell out of them for surviving the business this long. you can't compare bands like supergrass, suede or embrace to SFA. none of thos ebands have had any impact outide the uk. while it has been small, SFA's success in America and Europe has only increased with each release. they've made so many mistakes and had such bad luck all these years, kudos to them for focusing on what matters, the music and making it truly ace.

sfa's brand of "eclecticism" sounds a bit polite 7 albums in. i hear very little adventure in their more recent work, to be honest. some fans complain about "rings..." being overproduced, but i think it and "radiator" and probably the debut benefit from being slightly more brash and poppy than the others.

i think sfa are relatively close in spirit (rather than sound) to brit-rock survivor types like the charlatans and teenage fanclub. evolving very slowly, their selling-point is more as a reliable, consistent safe bet, and their appeal on those terms waned at similar-ish stages of their careers.

Except Guerrilla is the band's most eclectic - and their best- album.

Supergrass are a great band as well all because of their first two albums, but everything else they've done has been decidely underwhelming or unimportant. Calling "Caught by the Fuzz" "26 times better" than SFA's best song is sort of funny, but I guess that's up to you.

Not that "Do or Die" is anywhere near their best.

Oh well. Leave it to the Internet to bash a band that's been acclaimed ever since their debut. The authoritative voices that act like it's common knowledge SFA are some "lesser" band are a riot. They're great. Quit being so mean.

i don't think anyone is giving SFA that hard a kicking on this thread, to be fair. the thread question is about why their new album isn't selling well, so it makes sense to talk a little about what the band's weaknesses are, and why they might have come to the fore with this record.

one thing that some of us sorta feel is that, while any SFA record might, on its own terms, be considered adventurous, all of their records have been "adventurous" in a fashion relatively similar to the sfa music that has preceded it. so, seven albums in, people no longer think its possible that the group are going to take some really exciting, adventurous leap - leaving only the dedicated, who have a strong affection for the furries' particular quirks, sounds etc. to buy the record. the rest are content with their two or three favourite sfa records, though these seem to vary a lot from person to person.

don't think do or die is near their best.
SFA are just a very very consistent band that actually is in a major league. never wrote a bad song, all albums are top, in more than a decade. coca cola offered them 700.000 $ to use a song in an ad and they turned it off.

They're still adventurous, just not nearly as much as before. "Slow Life" on Phantom Power was a pretty incredible song. They still have those sorts of songs in them it seems, but I guess bands tend to mellow out once they get near their 40s.

Nice to see a healthy discussion about a 'boring' band! Those that do feel that SFA is boring, please step out of your instant fix ideologies and listen to their music rather than expect it to fit into some catergory that you have subliminally set in your head... Catergories 'Music I like' or 'Music that's boring' don't allow you to explore, and you will be forever disappointed by some fantastic music be it Classical, Jazz, Rock, Trance... whatever. To say they're boring is about as shallow as liquidised Coldplay, I know you haven't REALLY listened because no-one cold call them boring if they had!
Super Furry Animals predictable? Since when? None of their albums are comparable with each other, let alone anyone elses!
Of course not everyone's going to like SFA, but no-one can call them boring or unpredictable!

Back to the album then, I like it. They sound like modern day Pink Floyd. The marketing has been minimal compared to albums like Guerilla or Rings Around The World where they were still being touted as the next big thing. but SFA are the best of the non big best bands. They piss all over bands like Flaming Lips et all.

I'm in NZ and still can't buy Love Kraft, no one knows when it will be available here, I'm gagging for it and have heard some songs on net...They are the best band in the world. They are musical and lyrical geniuses. It does! I was thinking this just yesterday. There's the ELO copy Zoom, the lost children's N64 game soundtrack (Oi Frango!), the ballad at the end. Those are just my favorites. Probably my favorite album by them.

I always liked it back then but haven't listened to it in a while. The rest of their 00s albums have grown on me with several listens, so...

I have been a huge fan since about day one of the English speaking records. Thought they were just about the best band up to their tenths anniversary. Love Kraft was brilliant at first but really lost it fast. I love a few of the songs but overall it's their worst record, which I haven't listened to for a long, long time.

It doesn't help the rest of the album that it starts with one of the best songs of the 00's, but somehow it copes brilliantly! The only thing preventing it from being a solid-gold winner is 'Ohio Heat', which kinda stalls the momentum built up over the first three (superb) tracks. After that, however, it gets back in the saddle, and whilst things like 'Lazer Beam', 'Oi Frango' and 'Psyclone' are excellent, the real winners come at the end. 'Cloudberries' is a sort of noise-freakout-minor-key masterpiece, but it's dwarfed again by the astonishing 'Cabin Fever', which is an ace 4-minute song with a quite brilliant 2-minute outro stuck on the end, which is rapidly becoming one of my favourite finishes to an album.

As a whole, the record reminds me a little of Mutations by Beck, in terms of its eclecticism, its vibe ('party-apocalyptic' interspersed with 'oddly-affecting'), the fact that it's a consistently excellent album which still gets away with sticking the best tracks at the beginning and the end, its ambition, and above all its undeniable quality.

I liked it then, but haven't listened too much since 2005. The earlier SFA albums were better that Love Kraft, except Phantom Power, but even that was not a bad record.

I don't like it much, really. I think they're going to hit it big with their next one, though, which is supposedly influenced by motown/doowop and going to be their heaviest yet (Gruff's words).

Gruff's second solo album is great. I pretty much love every song on there. "Skylon!" is phenomenal.

Neon Neon seems promising, though who knows how that sort of thing will turn out. (http://www.myspace.com/neonx2).

Na, just didn't know about them when they were only a Welsh band or before the Creation Record days. First thing I bought was the "God! Show Me Magic" EP then proceeded to buy just about every single EP and every album after that.

Still have yet to hear Gruff Rhys solo album because I was only listening to 2006 records to make my end of the year list. By most accounts it's pretty good so I'm looking forward to hearing it.
