petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

exept for the one on the far right, who looks bad only by association.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

i say, in order of most retarded to least:
1. hat
2. dreadlocks
3. fatbeard badshave
4. lowerleft corner
5. other guy

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

I saw them on TV last night, talking about their upcoming Canadian Idol performance, and, um, they're really the same giant fucking dorks as they were 15 years ago. I almost respect that.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

1. Fatbeard Badshave
2. Twat o'Shanter
3. Son of Newman
4. Lower Left Corner
5. Un-natty Dread

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that's fine.

But, do they still do that "it waas funny at the time" song "If I had a million dollars"?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

they mention Sailor Moon in one of their songs. lay off them.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

THey mention Sailor Moon in ALL of their songs.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

for real? i guess i'm obliged to buy their album then.

fuck.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

The problem is that some of them look more obviously retarded than others, but if you stare at the more subtly retarded looking ones long enough, they actually look even more retarded.

Actually, to me the least retarded one is the fat guy in the middle - he looks like he's actually thinking "Eughhhh! Get these retards away from me."

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, to me the least retarded one is the fat guy in the middle
He just doesn't want to get retard punched by Dreadlocks.

kaygee (kaygee), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Dreadlocks looks like a bad, out-of-proportion drawing. what's with the Jeremy Beadle looking wanking claw?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

Most retarded = guy who designed that cover.

That arm belongs to fattyspecs. It's growing out of his fatfro. DON'T STARE!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

If you like any of the BNL songs you will enjoy this album. I even caught my man humming it round the house and hes way too laid back for this stuff:). BNL are a fun band with catchy rhythms and smart lyrics. They get in your head and wont leave... I played this non stop when I bought it and 5 years later can still play it over and over and over and over. $1,000,000 is still the fave for me, we all dance around to that in our home. Their cynical world view coupled with bouncy beats brings a surprising amount of joy and fun to this album and I reckon you should just go get one!.

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

agh, im going to hell.

petesmith (plsmith), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

openmouthed guy with nkotb hair is the most retarded.

renegade bus (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

nah, i'll just watch Sailor Moon. they mention Sailor Moon in that, AND the music is better.
xxpost

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

I went to college in Michigan, and my first week of school was spent hanging out around a bunch of kids from suburban Detroit who all seemed, inexplicably, to be huge Barenaked Ladies fans. I felt like I had stepped into a bizarro world. (I figured out the whole proximity-to-Canada thing -- same reason Michiganders like hockey so much -- but it was still weird.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

guy in lower left corner is obv the "evil genius" of the band

renegade bus (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe he's trying to punch the genius waves back in through the top of his head. He looks like he thinks that's a pretty clever idea, actually.

kaygee (kaygee), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

this cover makes me wish i had five fists

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

you people are so lame. don't you have anything better to do than dis artists you don't like? I have been a barenakedladies fan for 10 years and they have more talent in their little finger's than any of you guys have. your just jealous that you don't know how to make good music like they do. you probably like blink 182 or green day. just go back to your mothers basement timmy because you probably live with her and listen to green day and have nothing better to do than be on the internet all day.

in the larger picture you can see the blond highlights in fattyspecs' hair.

renegade bus (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

The bigger picture reveals that it's not dreadlocks the guy on the right is sporting, it's a jheri curl. So shame on you haters!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

The one in the hat looks like the BNL bitchass intern.

The best band by a huge mile & great CD too, November 23, 2004
Reviewer: Damon G. Bransom "Anime the choice of a New Generation" (Sydney) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first found out about the Ladies from the QuickTime samples of an old Mac OS 8 Install CD (There Apple Masters btw) & have been hooked ever since.

I have to say this is my favourite out of all there CD, I'm not saying it's there best or they have not done better or evolved musically since this CD as I believe they have. It's just one of my all time favourites.

The thing I love about the Ladies is there sense of fun, whimsy, heart, soul & mateship (listen to the commentaries on there DVD's there so funny!). Also the fact that musically there brilliant & Stephen Page has a voice that an angle would be envious of. Check out there live CD's cause when Steve sings 'Break Your Heart' live... well you know the reason I'm a huge fan & you should be too.

Just get this CD & the rest of them too & the DVD's, Inflatable dolls, T-Shirts, action figures, etc... I am sure the Ladies all need new kitchens or help putting there kids through school or retire to houses in the country. Also you will be doing yourself a huge musical favour too!

There music won't cure the common cold but my god it will make you happy your alive!

Oh my gosh these guys are awesome!, February 22, 2001
Reviewer: Mike Blume (CA United States) - See all my reviews
My friend Adam got me into BNL over winter break, and this is still my favorite album, absolutely tons of great songs, including my favorite song in the whole entire world, which I'm listening to right now, If I Had A Million Dollars, which is really incredibly beautiful, and funny, and romantic, all at once, I don't know how, plus there's the line "I'd buy you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat that's cruel)" which always makes me think of this one girl I really really like (quite possibly the most wonderful human being in the universe) who's a BNL fan and a vegetarian just like me, oh, and the banter between verses, anyone here actually tried Kraft Dinner with Ketchup? The two tastes just don't mix, it goes in your mouth and you're like "oh, there's some Kraft Dinner, oh, there's some ketchup," completely separate, oh, Grade 9, I love, um, crazy's very weird, but very good, King of Bedside Manner's hilarious, and very loud and upbeat (helps keep me up when I'm pulling an all-nighter), um, so just buy the CD already, or borrow it, or something, you've got to hear these guys!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

It's best to imagine the sounds each of them were making as this photographic wonderwork was snapped for the ages. Especially hatboy and goatee in the back there, goatee is all loud, monotone "AAAAAAAAAAA" and the hat is doing a nasally "nyeeeehhhhh" sound, while the two nerdlinger dudes in the bottom left are probably making back-of-the-throat gurgly noises, and the fat guy from N*Sync on the right is like "yeah boy" in a chipmunk voice.

First of all, Bob & Doug is supposed to be comedy, eh?

As far as the others, it's one thing to try not to be funny and be funny. It's even worse when an artist tries to be funny and isn't funny.

Heh heh, actually, more to the point, are you sure the BNL are NOT trying to be comedy on some degree on that album? I know they're not a "comedy" band.. but then again, neither are The Evaporators, but they're far more hilarious than most "comedy" bands...

TS: Barenaked Ladies lyrics vs. El-P lyrics

Chickity China the Chinese chicken
You have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin'
Watchin' X-Files with no lights on
We're dans la maison
I hope the Smoking Man's in this one
Like Harrison Ford I'm getting frantic
Like Sting I'm tantric
Like Snickers, guaranteed to satisfy

vs.

Yo, yo, a bottle rocket, conflicted, I'll throw you a flaming wingnick
Looking for a hero's stars, Looking for heart in the halls
I swear, that lust monkey sweat soaks my balls
And this is one step from a junkie living, breakin in doors
My face low, for thermonucleus games
Spill rain the open drain, who the fuckk is down to steal me some pain
I'm feeling ancient with this shit, on some capitalist order scripts

this cover is even worse than you think. let me enlighten you as to the nature of two nudge nudge wink wink Canadian content visual references here:

exhibit A - the silly hat is actually a tam from Queen's University in Kingston Ontario.

http://www.campusbookstore.com/covers/M/TAMSCOM.jpg
see http://www.campusbookstore.com/index.cfm?index=SPIRITSHOP/WBSDETAILS&isbn=TAMSCOM

exhibit B - the apparent Pepsi logo aint that. it's supposed to look like a type of small soft sports ball, always painted with those stripes that was very commonly used in junior grade phys. ed. classes and more notably, often co-opted for road hockey use.

http://www.physed.ca/miva/graphics/SkillDevelopment/TL-SD1156.jpg
see http://www.campusbookstore.com/index.cfm?index=SPIRITSHOP/WBSDETAILS&isbn=TAMSCOM

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

One question we haven't touched yet: who/what the hell is "Gordon"? Why are they trapped between the bars of "Gordon"? Is the Pepsi ball coming to save them from "Gordon"? Maybe not, since the guy in the red shirt seems to be shielding himself from the ball. Then again, the uppermost guy seems kinda excited about (rather than scared of) the Pepsi ball, whereas the others seem indifferent to it. Maybe the album should be called "Different Stances Towards Pepsi"... But where does "Gordon" fit in?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

Also, both the green shirt guy and the jheru curl man seem to be making hand signs... Is that some sort of dork white-boy street code?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 08:55 (nineteen years ago)

Why, "Gordon" is clearly a slice of gnomic normalcy, a name so ordinary it's funny: FEEL TEH WACKINESS.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

Look how wacky they are! That record sleeve tells me that there is a better, more fun existence than this quotidien misery, and for just the price of a CD, i could be granted admission.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

There is so much wrong with the cover I don't even know where to begin. But the top two guys are just making stupid faces, and the bottom right two seem to be playing fake punch/fight game, which leaves the bottom left guy, who is just holding his fist over his head for no apparent reason. Not to mention that he and beret-guy have the same-y color shirt so they look like one big horrible monster.

S- (sgh), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

Gordon picks up where the Barenaked Ladies' famous demo "The Yellow Tape" left off and moves them into majors. Their first for Reprise, this witty songbook finds the Canadian five-piece to be a clever group -- charming, but not childish, yet the Barenaked Ladies are pretty close to overstepping the boundaries of silliness. The thing that keeps them in line is their sharp harmonies. Shared vocals between guitarist Ed Robertson and Steven Page are refreshing and upbeat, especially on reworked versions of "Brian Wilson," "Be My Yoko Ono," and the eternal favorite "If I Had a $1000000 Dollars." "Hello City" and "Box Set" are slick narratives, making for album standouts with its jazz-cool blend. Other shiny moments, such as "Enid" and "Grade 9," are humorous in reflecting upon adolescence, while "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" showcases the Barenaked Ladies' more romantic side. Through all the jokes, these guys are a bunch of suckers for love and such sensitivity is a great match for their quirky musical persona. Gordon is a great introduction to the Barenaked Ladies' sweet comic relief and it's sure to be a college rock mainstay.

I heard this record every fucking day for about a year and a half when I was working at my first record store job (in Canada, obv). And we sold TRUCKLOADS of this motherfucker. I worked with a guy who looked like a member of the Muppet band (and on second thought, he wouldn't have looked out of place on this record cover). He had a tight, curly afro that resembled the hairdo of Howie Mandell. Anyways, he was the fuck chop that insisted on playing this drivel day-in, day-out.
I bet I could sing you the whole record.
Sometime in 93, I was at a show in Calgary, and Fatbeard Badshave walked in. And pretty much everyone in the whole bar was mortified and making fun of him. It was hilar.

His tall, skinny figure and red hair are his trademark physical features. Around 1994-5, he grew his hair out, which caused him to frequently be compared to Carrot Top. Aside from the long-haired period, his appearance has remained remarkably constant compared to that of his bandmates.

In 2006, Creeggan played the bass in Sarah McLachlan's Christmas album, Wintersong.

He currently lives with his wife, Anna, and son, Finn in Toronto.

Barenaked Ladies Cancel Disney Show After Drug Rap
By REUTERS
Filed at 11:18 a.m. ET

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Popular Canadian band the Barenaked Ladies has pulled out of a children's charity show organized by Walt Disney Co after lead singer Steven Page was charged with possessing cocaine, the band said in a statement posted on its website on Friday.

The five-man band had been due to play at the Long Island, New York, show -- the Disney Music Block Party -- late next month.

"Members of the band completely support Steven Page but we don't want to put Disney in an awkward position before issues involving Steven's arrest are resolved," group manager Terry McBride said in the statement.

Page, was arrested last Friday in Fayetteville, New York, and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

The band is best known for hit songs such as "One Week," "Pinch Me," and "If I Had a Million Dollars."

every time i see this thread on the new answers page, i open it and laugh at the title and first 20 or so posts. probably one of my favorite thread starts on ILM.

to me the worst guy is the guy with the nkotb hair+goatee. the one in the hat actually seems like he might be the 'funny' one IRL, but the forced zaniness of nkotb-hair and horn-rimmed assflake in the lower left makes them seem worse than retarded.

rockapads, Friday, 18 July 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

A great friend of mine really inspired me on the perfect reason to hate the Barenaked Ladies. What pissed her off the most about these bastards is the fact that they probably got laid every night by different women in the 90s, and probably still do in Canada.

Also - did you know Jason Priestly backed some of their crossover into American mainstream? Canuck loyalty - awesome.

The arrest comes as the band, known for its clean image and cross-generational appeal, recently released a new album for children titled, "Snacktime," a collection of two dozen original children's songs.

Canada's Most Wanted

Eazy, Saturday, 19 July 2008 03:21 (sixteen years ago)

from roger ebert's review of their movie:

If you knew a lot about movies but nothing about a band named Barenaked Ladies, you might reasonably assume that "Barenaked in America" was a spoof--a "This Is Spinal Tap"-style mockumentary aimed at the popular image of Canadians as people who are awfully nice. While most band documentaries wade through sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, this one has no sex, no drugs, and the kind of rock 'n' roll that reminds one of their fans of "something I'd hear at a dorm party." It's groundbreaking when the lead singer comes out in chinos and a dress shirt with the buttons stretching over his tummy. But the movie becomes even stranger when the camera goes aboard the tour bus. What do the band members do on the bus? Play euchre. Yes, euchre. "Euchre is a Canadian thing," one of the sidemen says. "I don't know if Americans have ever heard of it." Oh, and I almost forgot: There is sex on the bus, but it doesn't involve groupies and orgies. A couple of the guys giggle about sneaking out in the morning to dispose of used Kleenex.
...
The documentary, directed by Jason Priestley ("Beverly Hills 90201"), arrives in Boston, where the Ladies fill an enormous arena with their fans. We get the usual sound bites outside the hall, but not the usual opinions: "They look like guys you'd see working at the Gap," one fan says.

i learned this
In May 2009, BNL partnered with American ice cream company Ben & Jerry's to create the flavour "If I Had 1,000,000 Flavours." Named after the song "If I Had $1000000", the confection consists of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, peanut butter cups, chocolate-coated toffee chunks, white chocolate chunks and chocolate-coated almonds. In the United States, this ice cream flavour is sold under the name "Everything But The...".

Someone do a longform oral history of the Gordon cover.

(please no long guns of any kind) (Eazy), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 19:46 (nine years ago)

Jim Creggan: Tyler suddenly got this look on his face and I could tell he had something brilliant in mind. He ran down the hall to his room and he came back with this bin full of hats. And I'm thinking: what on earth does he have in mind for all these hats? Sure enough, right before the flash goes off, he pulls the tam o' shanter over my head, and my look of surprise and wonder was immortalized on camera!

Tyler Stewart: I was just like: what can I do to make Jim look as stupid as possible? TMy bin of hats just made sense. And the rest of us felt compelled to raise our game and match that level of stupidity. I think we pulled it off.

Beef Wets (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:17 (nine years ago)

mozart, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:21 (nine years ago)

Xpost. Nice try Old Lunch but you need to do your homework. He wore that Tam O'Shanter all the time back then. Presumably by choice.

There was an oral-history article a couple of years (in Canada) about the album in which, iirc, they trashed the sleeve. Can't see it online unfortunately.

everything, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 20:38 (nine years ago)

Oh wait a min. Here it is

“Absolutely the worst album cover in the history of music,” Stewart sighed in a recent telephone interview. “It’s like some crappy font with photos of us wrapped around it. We’re all looking overly cute and earnest.

“It’s just … terrible.”

Added former co-frontman Steven Page: “I think even from the first time we saw the album cover, we looked at it and cringed.”

sleeve, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 21:57 (nine years ago)

The way the band defied categorization turned out to be only a minor hurdle in Canada, but not in the U.S., where radio playlists have long been more rigidly defined.

“It was like, is it a college thing? Is it an acoustic thing?” Page said. “It was really hard for anyone to pigeonhole it, and then combine that with the album cover with our stupid faces mugging on it, and it was like a recipe for disaster.”

Fred, in response to your thoughts about the "tard" name I must jump in for a moment. I would say I'm a faithful Shaytards viewer and have been watching for about four years. The origin of their name has come up quite a few times, and they have relayed their story and the reasoning behind the name each time. From what I recall, ShayCarl came up with the name in one of his first videos when he was wearing a leotard. From there the name sort of stuck and that is where the ending of the names came from, e.g., Sontard, Princesstard, etc. The name was absolutely never meant as an offense, nor has it been carelessly thrown out there. If you were to watch even one of their videos, I do not believe you would think for one second that these are the kind of people to do such a thing.

I'm just hoping this embarrassment will lead us to the critical reassessment of Barenaked Ladies, because Gordon is a fantastic album. I also really enjoyed Steven Page's new solo album from last year, and wanted to vote for it in the end of the year poll, as it was one of my favorite albums of last year, but didn't vote for it because I didn't think there would be any interest.

lol, I got dragged to a Barenaked Ladies show at Universal Mardi Gras once. didn't wanna go cos it interrupted sexytimes with the g/f but I'd already committed to going w/ my best friend and she didn't have an annual pass.

the lead vocalist had just quit like a week before so they had the keyboard player singing. it was the most boring show I ever went to. everybody hemming on about how 'quirky' they are, when it's like, ok they're college frat rock that occasionally writes songs about things like the Big Bang Theory.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 22 January 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)

"One Week" is such a bad song btw

So is this band an inevitable stage popular music had to go through before P0mpl@m00s3 took it to the next (final?) level?

Can't really imagine a thread titled "Most Faggoty-Looking Barenaked Ladies Member on This Album Cover" surviving ten years without mod intervention

OTM. The fact that we're still seeing ""jokes"" like "What a redact" is a pretty clear indicator that there's no way for this thread to get escape velocity from its original premise. I'm sure many people who participated just wanted it to be "most dorky and uncool barenaked ladies member," but it wasn't.

It's long past time to lock thread IMHO.

The ILX hivemind sees your request to lock thread and laughs

if only we had other barenaked ladies threads to use instead

or y'all could quit being passive aggressive and actually ask for the thread lock in the actual thread where the title change was requested, instead of asking the mods to police 11 year old threads.

i tried to do so for you all, but it's on y'all now.........

Gordon and Moxy Fruvous's Bargainville are two albums I still have an affinity for because they remind me so much of being 13

Still think they're both pretty good albums though hard to listen to now. For different reasons I guess.

BNL obviously went on to do a lot of garbage but it's pretty disingenuous to treat them like a novelty group or one-hit wonders, they've been around like 25 years now and they've written a lot of dumb songs but they obviously have some measure of talent. Always thought Maroon was a pretty damn great power pop album, at least.

six months pass...

I searched for the word 'retarded' to find this thread, unsuccessfully, just to post that the album that inspired it is celebrating it's 25th anniversary and as such Rhino is reissuing it on vinyl.

The press release features this image:

So this may be the new cover. So maybe the label/band/whatever agree that they all look like Cronenbergs...

It's wild that some of these songs date back to like 1988 or 1989 when they were like 18 or 19 or 20 or something

Okay I like "Wishing Well" inordinately and I don't reflexively hate on BNL. Will I die if I hear their cover?

okapi paste (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 28 July 2017 16:59 (seven years ago)

Public service announcement: Please don't listen to this.

Impossible to say whether "Psycho Killer" or "Wishing Well" is the worse crime. I gave them a chance because I try to be open-minded, but no. This is not the vehicle to convert a hata to a non-hata: quite the contrary; I went into it not hating them and came out hating them.

just stopping by as an actual disabled person to say: retard is a slur and if you try to justify tossing it around casually you're an ableist piece of shit, no fucking excuses, no whining about "pc culture" or whatever (and tbqfh mods should have done more than just removed it from the title, they should have actively pruned the posts laughing about it or deleted it and let a new BNL thread happen)

insofar as BNL goes, no strong opinions. got a mild giggle out of "ships and dip" and "fake nudes"

heliogabberlus, Monday, 19 February 2018 21:35 (seven years ago)

absolutely spot on mate, it's a garbage thread and should have been nuked a long time since.

calzino, Monday, 19 February 2018 21:53 (seven years ago)

Like as if putting [REDACTED] makes it less sneery + disablist somehow. Some fucking mods on here are more concerned about the welfare of anti-Semitic oxygen thieves, rather than garbage threads causing grave offence and hurt towards disabled people. It's just the way it is I'm afraid heliogabberlus.

calzino, Monday, 19 February 2018 22:00 (seven years ago)

Let the saga of the offensively-titled Barenaked Ladies thread finally draw to a close. There are 8 other BNL threads in existence - use one of them.

I tried to find the best solution for everyone on this board. You do realize that we mods get yelled at just as much for locking "classic threads" as for not locking them, right? We switched the title twice according to user suggestions in an attempt to find a workable middle ground. Apparently both of those workarounds continued to offend. We have many ilxors with mentally disabled family members, myself included. Some people are going to be more affected by words than others. We probably all try our best to treat each other well and not to be assholes.

Calzino, my concern about the poster who got banned two weeks ago was for their mental health, which is something you purport to care about if I'm reading you right. When I learned that their antisemitism had been established over a number of years and was not some recent development as a result of a mental break, I gave up on the issue completely.
