who else makes vitalic-style electro-techno?

Dunno if he's really electro-techno ... anyway: glam, campy, testosterone-fueled headbanging shit like La Rock 01. What else should I be seeking?

I haven't heard any Vitalic, but based on your description I'd suggest Takkyo Ishii, though he's perhaps more on a house/hi-NRG vibe.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

wrong!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

As I said, I haven't heard any Vitalic, but you can't deny Takkyo Ishii's music isn't "glam, campy, testosterone-fueled headbanging shit" with an electro flavour.

Whirlpool Productions, maybe?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and DJ Hell too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Or at least the tracks on his Munich Machine LP, the earlier stuff I've heard is more housey.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

first of all, his name is takkyu ishino

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

2nd, his music doesn't sound like vitalic.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

What part of "I haven't heard any Vitalic, but based on your description I'd suggest..." didn't you get? But maybe I shouldn't have posted on this thread at all, I'll go now.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 17 September 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

i didn't get why you bothered to recommend an artist you don't even know to someone who's asking about an artist you haven't even heard.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 September 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

the correct answer is : "not too many". otherwise, he would not have gotten so wildly famous in so short a time on the basis of so few tracks. nevertheless, here are some suggestions.

black strobe
david caretta
al ferox
dj tonio
dj hell

terence fixmer (a bit darker)
green velvet (a little bit more rhythm, less synth)

the advent (heavier, more techno, less electro)
the mover (slower, more breakbeats)
smash tv (more glitchy)
ellen allien (more twee)

felix da housekatt (most often)
laurent garnier (sometimes)
dj hell (sometimes)
dave clarke (less often)
slam (less often)

The new Vitalic album really reminded me of the old techno track Indo Tribe - "Bite the Bullet Baby" (actually Future Sound of London). There's also an old house/techno track called "Son of a Gun" which is similar.

You might want to check out some Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Unkle for funky and tuff electro. Also there's this German guy called Akufen who is probably the best hardcore electro producer out.

Carte Noir, Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Also, Underworld are pretty good electro-techno with a rock/indie twist. You might want to hunt out some Leftfield as well for a similar vibe.

Carte Noir, Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

i found this on another board:

"Nitzer Ebb? Try a Roland System 100, Oberhiem Xpander, or a Sequential Circuits Pro~one. I think those basslines sound the way they do because those synths have very snappy envelopes. In fact, I think the Pro~one may have the fastest envelopes of any hardwired analog that I know of.
As far as the way they are written; I think this is the result programming on an analog sequencer. If that is of interest to you, I'd look into the doepfer sequencers or the frostwave units."

xpost, ugghhh

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Some clasic electro-techno albums:

Underworld - Rhythm And Stealth
The Chemical Brothers - Push The Button
Roni Size Reprazent - New Forms
The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned
Fatboy Slim - Palookaville
Mr Scruff - Keep It Unreal

roni size sounds like vitalic? what planet did you just post that from?

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

how come everyone likes techno now anyway? did you all get bored with grime and Houston hip hop (actually dave stelfox seems to be keeping this bandwagon firmly on its tracks)

do be a jerk, this is berlin, Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

New Forms definitely has some non-organic electro-y tech-y colours in its sound pallette maybe you should try listening more closely and you'll notice the similarities.

Carte Noir, Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

surely that dude above is joking.

"Outrage" totally sounds like Vitalic to me.

There are loads of Vitalic-a-likes in the world of relatively faceless dance production, but many are crap.

Also have been noticing Black Strobe-a-likes of varying quality cropping up rather alot lately.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Obviously the electro flavours are further in the background than with Vitalic's brand of stomping electro glam vibes, but they are definitely there.

Carte Noir, Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

ronan, i really don't think he is joking. he is scaring me, i won't even touch the other suggestions he made.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Mr Scruff though!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

carte noir, have you been watching old archives of MTV's AMP?

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

berlin massive!! i'm glad you had a change of heart about "der klang der familie".

your question is very important i think, but i'm not sure what the answer is. i think it has something to do with the popular european house (electro-house) veering ever closer to sounding like proper techno. i don't know if i have heard any really steppy house which would be the final ingredient in the switch. techno becomes deep house (kompakt) and house becomes techno (trentemoller).

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

don't you mean the proper european techno veering close to sounding like house??? or wait......this is confusing.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Why am I scaring you? You obviously do not really love music if you can't locate the electro/techno textures in Roni's work.

Some more suggestions on a rather more chilled, post-club comedown vibe:

Mantra ft Linda Oliviera - Lullaby
Groove Armada - Superstylin'
Lemon Jelly - Come
Playtime Toons - The Shaker Song
Different Gear vs The Police - When The World Is Running
Azido Da Bass - Dooms Night (Timo Maas Mix)
Bob Marley vs Funkstar Deluxe - Sun Is Shinin'

Carte Noir, Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

:'(

don't be jerk, this is china (FE7), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Blake Baxter is totally vital electro-techno.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

You obviously do not really love music if you can't locate the electro/techno textures in Roni's work.

sigh.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to say Charlie's "Spacer Woman" is Vitalic style electro techno.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

no shit, dnftt.

ronan, that is what i am saying, yes. also, regarding "outrage", maybe it's the frenchness.

hey dan, you are a synth aficionado right? do those nitzer ebb synths in the post i quoted above seem correct?

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

(xpost with ronan)

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

ministry's "with sympathy", then!

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

i'm really bad at picking out synth sounds, and don't have those nitzer ebb records. But were Nitzer Ebb using analog sequencers? They're mostly mid to late 80s right? That's MIDI time, I don't think anyone was using analog sequencers. Maybe Vince Clark. But in any case, unless you're talking about timing differences between MIDI and CV, there's no way you can say "that sounds like an analog sequencer" when any MIDI sequencer can record a 16 note pattern and quantize it.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I mean, some sounds are clearer to me, Roland's chorus and sound is such a benchmark of techno, but hearing an OB-8 or Prophet 5, I can't really tell to be honest.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Underworld - Rhythm And Stealth

hehe

Da Funk

taylor, Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

taking a 16 note pattern and quantizing it is exactly what nitzer ebb were doing, actually it may also be 8 notes in some cases.

the sounds they used were very rough distorted bass sounds similar to sounds on ministry's twitch, but more bubbly and arpeggiated (i think this is where the analog sequencer comment comes from).

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 17 September 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

my point is that the sequencer just being the control mechanism, whether analog or MIDI, doesn't matter. Unless you're like Vince Clark and want to complaing about timing flaws of MIDI(actually, that's pretty common these days but back then it was like "huh? Everyone else is fine with it..., now everyone just records shit into the computer and loops it anyway)

Another alternative is that the sequence is set up in the synth, like some rolands have little sequencers and/or arpeggiators, which is then synced up. In any case, I don't think you'd be able to tell how and analog sequencers sounds different then a MIDI sequencer from the sound, but by the timing.

geez you guys are freakin maniacs sometimes.

thanks for clarifying dan...i don't know why i was trying to explain a random post that i didn't even write. i did also think that the sequencer in question may not have been a separate piece of hardware, but as you say w/r/t sound it doesn't matter.

here's a snippet from "let beauty loose" by nitzer ebb if you want to check it out.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 18 September 2005 00:49 (twenty years ago)

that could be anything. Pretty basic synth sound, could be sequenced with any type of device, analog or midi. But those drums are definitely MIDI-era sounds. The whole thing was probably sequenced on an Atari ST or whatever was popular at the time.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 18 September 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

thanks! "basic synth sound" characterizes much early nitzer ebb, it is an enigma.
