The Album is titled "In My Mind" and includes the new single "Can I Have It Like That" feat Gwen Stefani."

i only got the stream to work once but i didn't really like what i heard.

how badly is this going to suck / not suck?

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 18 September 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

"flyin' like a bird like nelly furtado"
"yizzeard"

skate board p wtf?

the son of dean cameron (dr g), Sunday, 18 September 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

actually so bad that it cracks me up. "on and on and the temperature warming" - i would cringe if mike d said that!

Wow this is really horrible lol.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Haha, what I gave Pharrell idea he could rap? I thought his cameo on "Drop It Like It's Hot" was awkward enough. Speaking of which, the chorus of this song kinda tried to replicate it, didn't it? I kinda liked the beat though - it's surprisingly murky and deep and unpolished compared to your usual Neptunes stuff. The bassline sounds nice.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Scrap the extra "I" from there.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I plan on liking this solely because all you losers will hate it.

bugged out, Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

i've actually enjoyed past work. i thought his spot on the "milkshake" and "drop it like it's hot" remixes were pretty good, and "drop it like it's hot" was obv an instant classic. so i'm a little shocked it's this bad.

and the beat is nothing great, either. if it had been on "neptunes present the clones" it'd have been the worst beat on the album.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 18 September 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

isn't there a line in "drop it likes it's hot" that goes "think before you fuck a little skateboard p"?

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

oh, btw, I am drunk.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

wow this is ass

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

i really liked a couple of the slim thug beats too!

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

every time i think they're comin back...

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

"comin back"? haven't they always been this spotty? i figure even at the best of times, they were batting about .750, and at the worst, only about .500

vahid (vahid), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

lavish by twista is nice tho. pharrell raps pretty good on that.

bugged out, Monday, 19 September 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

I was one of the few who liked most of Clones (pretty much everything except for the N.E.R.D/Spymob tracks and ROSCOE P COLDCHAIN), but this is awful.

There are some decent drums in there, but the vocals and that stupid-ass boomy bass "line" have to go.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

i dunno v, i can probably only name three beats theyve done in the last 18 months that i'd rank with the best from 98-03

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

admittedly theyve been producing less. or at least thats the impression.

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

so i guess "comin back" means every time they do one good beat every four or five months i'm all "omg this is it!" and uh no

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

jordan, i loved almost all of clones too.

this beat's "interesting" but kinda stoned and stupid. the vocals are terrible.

also, ice creams - wtf? did you ever see anyone wearing those ugly pieces of shits?

if you like older hip-hop, i.e. hip hop before the neptunes took over, you will like this. if you dont, youll probably wonder where all the 'futurism' etc etc went to. i like this beat. its not amazing, but its pretty good. its still quite interesting as a production. his rhyming is a bit backpackerish though, surprisingly.

okoko, Monday, 19 September 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

Can someone please pass Gwen a tissue or some decongestant?

FWIW, first listen = WHOA, 2nd listen = oh no.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Which is actually how I felt about that Slim Thug single, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

And I think this whoa / oh no flip-flop applies to my feelings on all post-"Milkshake" Neptune endeavors.

Thank you.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

I find the song very enjoyable, I like the drum roll a lot.

tune sounds wacker every day

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Justin... is there any point at which Pharrell jumps the shark? Would it take having his own sitcom, or possibly his reinvention as a minor religious deity or something? There's nothing wrong with jumping off the bandwagon, especially if it's about to go off a cliff.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Wow great googler. Unfortunately Jus-10's post is better than the album I'll wager.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm going out on a limb and saying that Pharrell is already yesterday's news, for good, because this type of crap pop/r&b sound has absolutely NO staying power. Wait- before you go off with your "b-b-b-but Neptunes brought back chirping bird noises and cowbells" line, I will give them credit for being great of-the-moment producers and even better in the re-mix department.

That said, the type of music they produce is utterly disposable, and gets recycled better by someone else every five years or so. What they've done isn't so great, either. It's pretty simple, actually. There only credit is that they took things from other arenas of music, things theat others have been doing forever, and plugged them into an open pop/r&b field.

I'll put a $50 on Pharrell spiraling into some crack-head Bobby Brown lifestyle within the next three years. The crap records have already begun. All he needs to do is marry a has-been diva and run onstage drunk to sing backing vocals for her comeback concert....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

The only redeeming thing about this track is Gwen's kewpie-doll contribution to the hook.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

I've been waiting/hoping for Pharrell to rap more. He's only until know done it occasionally but I always found his verses charmingly snotty.

This song is really great. The hate the track is getting here reminds me of the "Drop it like it's hot" single review in Pitchfork awhile back that was just a superficial put down of Pharrell's comical arrogance of saying he knew "killers in the street."

Oh and calling himself "Skateboard P" Total WTF in a very good way.

theodore (herbert hebert), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Being impressed by name-changing stunts ala P Diddy, Prince-2-symbol, and Skateboard P is totally lame....

....unless it's the instance of ODB to Big Baby Jesus, which was so amazingly crack-headed that it deserves special recognition....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Jus-10, Thursday, 29 September 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

This is growing on me. The beat is a great car track, the way the deep bass will rumble your trunk on a CD-quality release, and Gwen's hook is fine. Don't pay much attention to Pharrell and it's a nice single.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 29 September 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

the weird thing about the beat is that it's kind of nineties and very un-neptunes-y.

XPOST

This coming from guys named "Jus-10" who start off their posts "I'M BACK IDIOTS..."

Yeah sport, um, you maybe are......just 10?

Since you called it out- What EDUCATED person starts out thread with "I'M BACK IDIOTS"?

Sorry, but I'm well aware of ALL the songs they've done beats/remixes for. If you want to talk about this album being great, talk about WHY, because the insults to posters only makes YOU look like an IDIOT.

I say it sucks because the beats are uninspired and the rapping sucks. Back your shit up!

Hey Jay Vee- get off your boy's nuts, you groupie lip-job...

jsoulja (jsoulja), Thursday, 29 September 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

"On and on and my nuts I'm palmin
Take two of these and call me in the mornin"

Pharrell assumes the role of a doctor,
prescribing both of his testicles to cure the world.

Or more likely prescribing, for our benefit, the very idea that he confidently palms his nuts before us in public, figuratively and perhaps literally though I've never seen a photo of Pharrell doing exactley that. Pharrell is asking us to rise to the challenge of this opening salvo. We could be a world that collectively palms its testicles without shame.

theodore (herbert hebert), Thursday, 29 September 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

HERE WE GO FUCKERS... AGAIN YOU COME AT ME WITH A LIST OF STUPID SHIT YOU POST....HERE WE GO:

1.Q: Since you called it out- What EDUCATED person starts out thread with "I'M BACK IDIOTS"?

A: I'M HERE TO DO EVERYONE ELSE THAT READS THIS POST...TO TELL IGNORAMUS'S SUCH AS YOURSELF NOT TO POST....THAT'S RIGHT, YOURE FIRED FROM POSTING....

2.If you want to talk about this album being great, talk about WHY, because the insults to posters only makes YOU look like an IDIOT.

GEEZ YOU FUCKIN SCIENTIST I WOULD LOVE TO TALK ABOUT THE ALBUM BEING GREAT, ONLY...OH WAIT...THE ALBUM ISN'T OUT YET....ONCE AGAIN, UNEDUCATED MOOK TRYIN TO GET AT ME....
PHARRELL IS ONE WORD. INNOVATIVE. YOU DON'T SEE HIM DOING ONE THING STICKING TO ONE THING, HE DOES IT ALL...THE BEATS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD, THAT'S WHY THEY'RE THE NEPTUNES, AND IF HIS BEATS ARE UNINSPIRING HOW COME HE'S MADE NUMBER 1 SONGS FOR HALF OF THE RAPPERS,TEENY BOPPERS,BOYBANDS, IN THE INDUSTRY PAST AND PRESENT MAKING ANYWHERE FROM 500 THOU TO A MILLION EVERY BEAT? I THINK THE "HOLLA BACK GIRL" SONG JUST LEFT THE CHARTS AND WAS NUMBER 1 FOR A WHILE....

STOP WASTING YOUR TIME, DIPSHIT...

OH YEA... JAY VEE, GUESS WHAT....HIS NAME IS STILL JSOULJA....

what is it with fucking indie rock fans who like to write off hip hop and RB& artists ahead of time? bitchfork was slagging off the snoop album saying the neps were old news and past it but drop it like its hot was one of the best beats in hip hop as of late, pharrell is still producing forward thinking music for other artists, you fuckers just dont like it because it doesnt sound as poppy and is more subtle than the stuff the neps got big with. get over it, you stupid fuckwads. pharrell isnt going anywhere, NERD's first album was fucking hot, pharrell is a shit singer but he has his moments, and skateboard p is going to shit on most other albums from a great height, whether you like it or not.

xpost - so whether i like it or not, pharell will be living in some high rise building and defecating out the window onto a big pile of recently released albums? and you're okay with taxpayers money going to cleaning up his filth, just so he can make this grand artistic gesture? get at me dog. jus10 holla back

"Believe me, you dont wanna hear the acapella version of this song. it is just terrible. "

like fuck it is. its GOOD. is it crap cos he isnt rhyming totally asinine couplets like you guys like to hear? pharrell is actually a good rapper these days - just listen to him on the new clipse mixtape.

.

hipsterkiller, Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

the thing is, i agree w/ most of the sentiments on this thread: pharrell IS an awesome producer, his recent work HAS been as good as his early work, he's a style icon and very influential and has enriched our lives immensely

BUT

this track really just sucks. there's no way around it. i really really hope the rest of the album is better.

There's an old Mick Jagger quote where he says that, after doing Exile, the Stones sat back and thought "Fuck it. We've done it."

I think that's where Pharell is probably at right now.

Hey Jus-10, my name is SUPPOSED to be a joke, whereas your call-out wigger speak makes me think maybe you got "Thug Life" inked on you. I got a question for you tough guy- you still live with your mommy?

Shout out all you want, change my name if you want, change yours to Jus-On-P-Nuts, yell as loud as you can- you still can't save all those copies of "Fly or Die" from the USED BINS.

It DIED. Sorry. Fact. New single? Sucks. Fact. I said they had their moment, and maybe they'll turn it around, but my $50 is still on "it's over".

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

have you even listened to the new clipse mixtape dan perry? until then, be quite please. k, thanx.

i find the attitude of many rock/indie fans towards hip hop/R&B to generally be one that says 'urban' music cant last or have longevity like rock artists, its all faddish, has no permanence, the artists are to be written off as soon as they stop having major pop hits or stop making pop-oriented stuff, which is kinda annoying really. i dont wanna lump everyone in one box, but all the nerd sucks/neptunes are done posts on ILM suck. not saying everything they do turns to gold, but a large amount of it still does. its just a different style now. anyone that thinks the neps are done and dusted after hearing hollaback girl needs help.

hipsterkiller, Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Chloe Sevigny is a good rapper and Pharrell would make a great president and all Middle-Easterners are cover models and George Bush is a terrorist though.

id be the first person to admit pharrells voice totally blows, and i hate frontin, and loathe virtually all his cameo whoring where he appears on every hook on his productions, but NERD did have good songs in spite of his weedy singing. i dont get the hate for their albums. the 2nd one was a bit lame with its sub-kravitz classic rockisms and some dire lyrics, and pharrell needs to stop being such an image whore, but the guy is a brilliant producer and songwriter most of the time. like i love you is one of the best songs of the last 5 years.

I even liked that first single on "Fly or Die" for about a minute, but truth is that Pharrell, with the exception of that first N.E.R.D. album, should keep it behind the mixing board, because he's already running out of ideas in that department.

Too much time trying to rap when you can't + too much recycling + too many magazine shoots + too much BAPE frontin' = on the way out

You're right Strongo- at this point, I'll take a cover of Chloe fronting a $300 thrift store shirt with an Imitation of Christ label sewn into it over Pharrell fronting the never ending fetish pursuit of $500+ sweatshop clothes

jsoulja (jsoulja), Thursday, 29 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

pharrell sings on "beautiful" which is my favourite 'tunes song and which i still love to this day so the haters are wrong ! (also i don't see how his singing in "drop it" ruins the song).
that said, i don't like the last single (but that may be cos i hate... gwen !).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 29 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

man-o-man....you dolts just don't get it...it doesn't matter what he's doing...he's rich...you're not...you waste your time sittin on your little computer talkin about pharell is past his time...oh yea PHARRELL COULD'NT COMMENT BECAUSE HE'S TO BUSY ON HIS PRIVATE JET WEARING HIS 3 MILLION DOLLAR CANARI DIAMOND ON HIS PINKY TALKING TO JAY-Z ON THE PHONE ABOUT HIS COMEBACK ALBUM....i mean do you really think anyone gives 2 shits about what you twats think??

QUOTE FROM J SOULJA: Shout out all you want, change my name if you want, change yours to Jus-On-P-Nuts.....

man...jsoulja where do you come up with this?? so inspiring...so funny and original.. jus-on-p-nuts...GET IT??!?!?!.... NICE TRY ASSHOLE, next time don't ask your little brother for a comeback

pharrell sings on "beautiful" which is my favourite 'tunes song

So you don't really like the Neptunes that much, then.

(also i don't see how his singing in "drop it" ruins the song).

That is the exception that proves the rule; that beat is so unstoppable that nothing could bring it down, including Wackman P.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Remember when Michael Jordan quit basketball for a while and tried other sports, like baseball? It's kind of like Pharrell and rapping. I mean, he can do it, but that doesn't mean I'm going to expect too much.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm also waiting for SKATEBOARD P's skate video series. Is he a ramp or street skater?!?

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Dude, you've got to be someone's little something, because your statements make no sense- no one on here really cares about Pharrell's money- that's why it's called I Love MUSIC. People discuss.....music! Sure, other things enter the dialogue, but what you're doing is just basically sucking the guy off because he's made some great records.

I'm saying his rapping is lame, and his production skills are starting to sound the same.

As for the insults- um, are you maybe the guy who started the "Danzig and Rollins are faggots" thread? I thought that was real clever...

jsoulja (jsoulja), Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

i love it when artists' cock fluffers try to say people crticising them are jealous of how much their favourite artist makes etc. like anyone gives a fuck.

hipsterkiller, Thursday, 29 September 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone else heard Pharrell speed-rapping (sort of) on Twista's new album? I'm not ashamed admit I stil like almost anything the Neptunes do (except that last N*E*R*D album!). I don't really get why people don't like "Can I Have it Like That", it sounds like a very cool pop record to me. The jazzy production isn't something I've heard a lot from Pharrell. BTW, I was surprised to learn that Chad Hugo wasn't involved with the single.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 29 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

This song will probably grown on people. Pharrell's line delivery is very loose and fun; it's sort of like THE BEST thing about the song. Just sort of bizarro to me that the rapping in particular is singled out by some as a source of suck.

One underrated element of the Neptunes work is that their best songs are sometimes deceptively catchy. It's always been more than simply weird noises that hold the songs together. That's why for me, Timbaland's stuff is always very impressive on the 1st listen but less so with every successive listen, whereas the reverse seems to be true in the Neptunes case.

theodore (herbert hebert), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

So you don't really like the Neptunes that much, then.

why is that ??

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Saying that "Beautiful" is your favorite Neptunes song is the textbook definition of "damning with faint praise".

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

well, only if you don't like that song ! to me it's a very catchy, smooth neptune track.
so you know better what song to like to "really like" them ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 30 September 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I know that "Beautiful" is not the end-all be-all of Neptunes productions.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 30 September 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

i think you should examine your pharrell obsession. it would probably reveal some fruitful personal insights.

bugged out, Friday, 30 September 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

so you can only like The Official One Song that is "the end-all be-all of Neptunes productions" ? (and as you seem to know : which one is it ?)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

(Note to self: stop talking to idiots.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

(first reasonable thing you've written here)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 30 September 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

"Beautiful" is a great Neptunes song! That's the kind of production I go to the Neptunes for -- the sleek discofied numbers like that and "Rock Your Body," rather than the minimal grind of, say, "Milkshake."

I was apparently the only Stylus writer that really liked "Can I Have It Like That."

STFU ALL U HATERS, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

i like the toms. i'll admit i find pharrell's voice warm and fuzzy, but the lyrics are pretty much dumb beyond belief. (did nelly furtado really need a namecheck?) gwen's contribution might just be the most useless cameo in the history of pop music - her voice is thin and unconvincing (everytime she says "you got it like that" i have to look around to make sure, just because she sounds so doubtful about it). but obv if you put her name on the track and her face/bod in the video, you're gonna sell assloads. is this where high-profile, crossover "collaborations" finally jump the shark?

(and i'm not trying to be anti-popist at all, i just think, you know, if they're going to use her, she should actually do something, sing something, whatever.)

but still, i do like those toms.

(oh, and why do people who "hate" on "haters" invariably fall back on the old, "this sounds better than anything you could do, etc etc"? if talent sets the bar that all potential critics must hurdle, what exactly is required of fans? at least the "haters" can string persuasive sentences together - something that the haters' haters are seemingly unable to. thus, by their logic, they should shut up until their debate skills surpass those of their objects of derision.)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

i like the bridge.

"haters" is a really insidious concept. it's basically an easy way of deflecting any sort of criticism, as if self-critique were the one thing rap music didn't need.

Jus-10, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

The defining neptunes track that captures their essence in my opinion is........ damn, that is such a hard question. I can narrow it down to a few, then further and analysis is required.
Beautiful,Lapdance, Give it to me(I'm a hustler baby), Rock Your Body, Slave 4 U, Superthug are my shortlisted tracks. After much thought I would have to go for Lapdance because of the sheer intense stacatto baseline.

Kevaldo, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I was reading some dude's book where he was talking about how haters come from the fact that other black people hate it when you make it out the hood or something. I think the dude wrote The Wood or something.

Let me start by saying "Cheers" to all of you that are lovin' on Pharrell, N-E-R-D, Neptunes, Clipse.... hell, anything connected to StarTrak, cause they been doin' the damn thang, and they gonna keep doin' the damn thing.
To you others that are contributing your maliscious opinions: Please don't think that anything you say or do here is ever goin to have an impact on Pharrell. He makin' money doin' what he does... and you can't say that he ain't, cause he'll be on your television screen or radio tonight! (Maybe event he big screen next).

Fact is: Ain't nobody out there done what this label has done. If you can think of one... name it. Music is music... it's all about how you interpret what you hear or feel. I personally love Pharrell because he's not afraid to try anything, despite what anyone thinks, even me!

strom (strom), Friday, 14 October 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

i found this site and this thread by going on google and searching for pharrells name to see what comes up, and i cant believe that so many people are dissing pharrell. the man has a gift from god and when you have such a gift, you have to use it. if he feels he has to sing on his records, or rap, or appear on his artists records, this is simply because this is what god wants him to do, what he was made to do, this is his real purpose. pharell and chad have been making beautiful music for years now and to ask them to suddenly quit just because you think pharrell shouldnt be in the spotlight is not only cruel but it is wrong. this is why he has been placed here on earth. you should be grateful pharrell is rapping and dancing, everything he does is a sign that god is generous when bestowing creativity amongst us. pharrell has been fortuante enough to make a large amount of money doing what he does, and he deserves what he gets, for all he has given us. pharrel puts himself out there open to criticism every time he makes music, but instead of thanking him or crediting him for what he does, the progressive risk he takes every time he releases a record, you people want to drag him down. you should understand though that no matter what you say, he will continue to make wonderful music, and get paid as he should for it, and even if you dont like his music in spite of all i have said, you have to respect the fact that he is getting paid for giving his gifts to the world, and that his art is pure, his intentions are noble, and his creativity is proof that there is a higher power looking over us.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

the song is FANSTASTIC. so many great lines

i dunno if any of you guys try producing music yourselves, but for someone like pharrell to be able to perfectly form marriage between his technical skills and song writing, still being cool and innovative and consistently creative then, really you should just shut the fuck up and go back to the sugarbabes thread

Idle Idle (idleidleidle), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahaha yes, som many great lines like the off-meter, off-rhyme scheme Nelly Furtado reference. Such genius!

I like Sugarbabes and all but I don't really have anything to say about them, whereas I could entertain myself for YEARS talking about precisely how fucking horrifying Pharrell is as a performer 85 times out of 100.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

the whole song is off-meter

'blow one or two speakers, something something something

nelly furtado rhyme is awesome too.

you people suck, i dunno who you people think you are, like you've listened to every song by every single artist in the history of recorded music to be able to make a judgement on what a good song makes, and for someone to give a shit on your narrow minded ness.

I like that he sounds like backpacker shit circa 1997.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 31 October 2005 07:23 (twenty years ago)

the video for this confuses me. somehow they shot it so it doesn't look like gwen and pharrell never actually shared a stage, though i think they did. also pharrell is dressed like a 14-year-old, even if he does own a lear. and the explosion, followed by 'in my mind' -- is this a kind of 'don't hate the player' thing abt violence in rap?

the 'ladies and gentlemen' bit kills the track stone-dead also.

but pharrell is still a piece of shit - just listen to his interview with westwood

hes a pretty shit rapper, and his singing is even worse
the less said about his lyrical talents the better

fucker, Monday, 31 October 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

I realized recently that another reason this song is great is due to the LL Cool J-like throwaway charm in certain line deliveries. Such as the way Pharrel rhymes, "pleeeease" and "ladieeees."
Isn't possible that all of the negative reviews of this are only really reacting to the fact that the arrogant super-producer and aspiring fashion mogul released a rap record, and not like, how he is actually using his voice?
Then again I honestly think Sean Combs is a great M.C.

Pretty dull song; "Angel" is better, if still not very good.

I was really rotting for PW; why doesn't he give himself an album full of Hot In Herres and bring in a guest on every track? I don't find him intrusive on "Drop It Like Its Hot" -- it's sort of endearing in small doses. Buuut.

What kind of idiot renames himself Skateboard P when he obviously cannot skateboard? His video footage on Startrak is hilarious... this guy really has his head in the clouds....or up his own anus...what a chump.

pitfield, Friday, 4 November 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Missy = better MC than Pharell was mine. Your turn.
------------

relevant? no
this song is awesome
and thats it. no need no explanation
you can think up a million superficial reasons to express your negativity towards a record and thats you. sad

-- Idle Idle

Relevant? Yes!

superficial reasons? lol! I don't need a million, the song kinda blows because Pharrel's rapping is flat-out embarrasing & amateur. M.I.A. is better (not a compliment). And in a tune like this, that's really all it takes to make it not very good. The beats hardly his best either...

Am I missing the (very) hidden depths in this masterpiece?
The only way it's "awesome" is in the "so bad it's good!" way, I chuckle hard when it comes on the radio :)

and btw, this is a music discussion board! If you don't want to discuss (no need, no explanation) what are you doing here?

Worst song, played on ugliest guitar (fandango), Friday, 4 November 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Pharrell is the shit, all you haters have no idea and will never be successful in life, you cant see the irony, sarcasm and humour, did you even notice the fat fuck in the Rockstar clip was wearing a sean john tee shirt the first time that he appears and then its just a blank shirt for the rest of the clip, Pharrell is having a tacit(look that word up in the dictionary you lame ass numb nutted fucks) shot at p diddy when he calls himself skateboard p and raps about leer jets, at the end of the day he's no sell out, he's on top of the world and he still reps skating and rocks shorts and a tee in his clip, its a juxtaposition of attitudes, at the end of the day pharrell brings it like nobody else brings it, which is why he gets more pussy than you can poke a stick at, pharrell mocks and is at the same time a fundamental part of hip hop/pop culture, "cheat on ya man ma thats how ya get ahizzead" - you think he actually promotes that shit? i dont, i think pharrell is so plugged in to the culture and knows exactly the type of shit he can get away with, because hip-hop/pop culture is so sheeplike he can lead it in whatever direction he wants and it will follow, at the end of the day i'd prefer to have pharrell leading it than p shitty or 50 bent(see how easy it is to change names, because it means nothing you dimwitted fucks, anyone can do it, thats pharrells point!), dont even bother writing to me as i wont respond unless you can name one other rapper with car doors that go up like transformers!

Nate-D, Sunday, 6 November 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

pharell is the shit man..this dude reps skaters and can get more pussy then i ever will fuck those haters man

one month passes...
so, any news about the release of the album ?
pretty curious to listen to it all (i really like "mamacita", "angel" is not brilliant but pretty smooth).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 16 January 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Angel is a grower

Baaderonixx, born again in Xixax (baaderonixx), Monday, 16 January 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

not sure if pharrell-the-singer is worse or better than pharrell-the-rapper.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 16 January 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Well, "Frontin'" is one of my favorite tunes of the last 5 years, so what do I know...

Baaderonixx, born again in Xixax (baaderonixx), Monday, 16 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

i like frontin, it sounds like durutti column, but maybe, being polite, you need to be in the right mood for pharrell's singing.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

i really like frontin too. angel, i like the little instrumental bit with a kind of ascending harpsichord. and the general smoothness makes it a track i wanna listen to quite often these days.
from the pharrell website, the album is supposed to have been postponed to march...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

it's a bit like 'change clothes'.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

a little bit but more... dreamy or heavenly...with big white puffy clouds... more angelic !
also, what i find nice with mamacita is that it's all about reggaeton... but without a reggaeton beat. clever !
so far, out of the 3 tracks i know from the album, it seems pretty good/decent (even can i have it is not that bad).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

so whats out there now? just the 2 singles and Mamacita?

Rich (Stinkin Rich), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

'Angel' is a horrible mess. Feel the backlash!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

dom tells me the backlash already happened, and i usually defer to him on 'urban' musics.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

well, it seems people have been predicting the backlash for a while... i think i've started to hear the "they're not as good as they were/they're over" like 5 years ago, so...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

backlash for me has only been since 'Fly Or Die', altho i did like 'She Wants To Move'

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

and since then you've liked nothing from them ?
i think they had some of their biggest artistic/commercial hits ever in the meantime !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Pharrell is soulless. I have just finished watching the video for Angel, and I feel physically sick.

Emotion in music is a beautiful thing, and this phrase sums up exactly why I hate pharrell. The guy is arrogant, and a complete poser.

Mark, Monday, 23 January 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

i have no idea about pharrell's personality and whether he's a nice guy or an asshole but i don't really care if i like the music (and in general, i don't associate the artist as a person with the work he creates.. otherwise, i woudn't have many CDs left !).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

With music born from emotion there is a very close relationship with a person, and the work he creates.

Some people put real soul and real emotion into their music, from life experiences. Of course the same artist can make music for the fun of it.

Pharrell, however, creates the most shallow music I have possibly ever heard, who else in a song called "angel" would sing the first line about a woman's ass. Worse than that, he spends the entire time in the video posing and playing up to the camera's. Sorry I just find this disgusting.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

WHEN Zarathustra was thirty years old, he left his home and the lake of his home, and went into the mountains. There he enjoyed his
spirit and his solitude, and for ten years did not weary of it. But at last his heart changed,- and rising one morning with the rosy dawn, he went before the sun, and spake thus unto it:

Thou great star! What would be thy happiness if thou hadst not those for whom thou shinest!

For ten years hast thou climbed hither unto my cave: thou wouldst
have wearied of thy light and of the journey, had it not been for
me, mine eagle, and my serpent.

But we awaited thee every morning, took from thee thine overflow,
and blessed thee for it.

Lo! I am weary of my wisdom, like the bee that hath gathered too
much honey; I need hands outstretched to take it.

I would fain bestow and distribute, until the wise have once more
become joyous in their folly, and the poor happy in their riches.

Therefore must I descend into the deep: as thou doest in the
evening, when thou goest behind the sea, and givest light also to
the nether-world, thou exuberant star!

Like thee must I go down, as men say, to whom I shall descend.

Bless me, then, thou tranquil eye, that canst behold even the
greatest happiness without envy!

Bless the cup that is about to overflow, that the water may flow
golden out of it, and carry everywhere the reflection of thy bliss!

Lo! This cup is again going to empty itself, and Zarathustra is
again going to be a man.

Thus began Zarathustra's down-going.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

well, angels have ass too !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

(and to answer your question, Prince could have easily done that... and even worse - or better, depends on what you think !)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

it still hurts my eyes to look at this thread because people can't figure out Pharrell is saying "yessir" and not "yizzeard" or some other nonsense word.

this album is gonna be completely horrible, isn't it.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

this album is gonna be completely horrible, isn't it.

would like to find out : so no official release date and why hasn't it leaked !?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Prince is just on a different planet to people like pharrell, prince might be inconsistent, but he's incapable of making something that bad I'm afraid

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 23 January 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

dom tells me the backlash already happened, and i usually defer to him on 'urban' musics.

oh henry this is a bad bad move you have made!

lemme break it down for you: dom a) hates 'oh' by ciara and b) hates kanye and c) hates grime and d) loves robyn = he hates 'urban' musics.

(maybe not 'backlash', the kidz still heart skateboard p, but...actually what i mean is 'can i have it like that' is crap)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

why does Dom write all those mega-positive UK rap reviews on Stylus then?

You are all a bit weird ;)

uk hip hop is like the poor cousin of 'urban' musics! (apart from sway who is a star.)

'angel' is junk.

captain easychord (captain easychord), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

"Angel" is ok (compared to "Can I Have It Like That" at least), but it is kind of like an inferior 2nd take of Omarion's "Touch"

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Monday, 23 January 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

the video for angel is so boriiing, the models have more life than him in this song, video may have actually gotten some more play if he didnt use a flat chested big ho from trini!

cracktivity1 (cracktivity1), Monday, 24 July 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

I am obsessed with smoov-groov Neptunes (and non-Neptunes) productions this year, so I will probably be buying this just on the strength of "Angel" & "Number One". Hopefully he doesn't rap too much.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 27 July 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

I like it

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 27 July 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

the rest of the album makes 'can i have it like that?' sound brilliant :o

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

What, I though this album was out ages ago... XXL reviewed it in February or March.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 28 July 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

'number 1' is a generational low point.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 28 July 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

ah. i like it !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

This is such a boring album

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

na, it's a smooth album. not brilliant or anything. just a smooth summer album.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

It really isn't anything special at all.

Rowlando for the kidz (Sam Rowlands), Friday, 28 July 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

I actually kinda like “Number One” just cuz it’s so corny, but if Kanye wasn’t involved I don’t think I’d care; “Can I Have It Like That?” is so dumb-silly it’s fun. Most of the rest of the album’s ass

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

In fact I would go so far to say that:

Pharrell calling himself “Skateboard P” > In My Mind

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

there aren't many great tracks but it's nice to listen to as a whole. I like it more than "clones", for one thing.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

'Clones' had "Frontin'", so just for that it was much better.

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

hum. although i really like "frontin", i never liked the rest of "clones".

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

Pharrell hasn't produced more than a handful of good tracks in the past 3 years, the idea that anyone expected him to suddenly cough up a dozen of them for this (or the Clipse album) is ridiculous.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

Pharrell hasn't produced more than a handful of good tracks in the past 3 years, the idea that anyone expected him to suddenly cough up a dozen of them for this (or the Clipse album) is ridiculous.
-- Alex in Baltimore (shipley.a...), July 28th, 2006.

yeah it'd be positively INSANE to expect a once-talented producer to... be talented again. three years at the top isn't very long.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

anyone has a list of all he's produced over the last 3 years ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

I can think of some great ones : milkshake, drop it, hollaback, signs, let's get blown, rock your body (2003 right ?), frontin... not too bad, I say !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

'rock your body' was 2002; i was meh on 'signs' and 'let's get blown' (especially).

and anyway that's still not very many tracks for three whole years!

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

"The Art of Noise" on Cee-Lo's second LP was fab, though maybe more due to Cee-Lo.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

yeah Justified was 2002 and one of the first non-N.E.R.D. releases after they started incorporating a lot of live instruments and acoustic drum sounds, which was really the beginning of the end. they were gonna have to abandon their original sound/formula eventually, but in my opinion they never really found a halfway suitable replacement.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

Summer of 2003 was their swan song. Since then, I can't really think of anything noteworthy apart from the slightly overrarted 'Drop it' and 'Hollaback Gril'

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

well, it's only the ones I really like so around 6 hits in 3 years is a pretty good ratio ! I don't know many artists who have more (some only have 1 in a whole career...).
yeah, "art of noise " is also pretty good.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Pharrell hasn't produced more than a handful of good tracks in the past 3 years, the idea that anyone expected him to suddenly cough up a dozen of them for this (or the Clipse album) is ridiculous.

how many great tracks has he ever done for himself? one, maybe two? this was never - cf clones - ever going to be good even at the neptunes' peak.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

When did Common's “I Got A Right Ta” come out?

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know many artists who have more (some only have 1 in a whole career...).

As much as ILE loves to talk about producers, I have to say it's kinda wrong Neptunes have had the hits they produced. Would Drop It have been a hit without Snoop or Milkshake without Kelis? I kinda doubt it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Whoops, ILE = ILM.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

has the clipse album leaked alex?

HPSTRKRFT (haitch), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

xpost
well, in this case it works both ways then can you say "drop" was snoop's hit or "milkshake" was kelis' ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

not that I know of, but I'm really not checking for it

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 28 July 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if it took me 5 years to get used to Pharrell while it took some of his former fans 5 years to realize what Pharrell is like.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 28 July 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I expect Paris Hilton's record to trump this one.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

ah. funny how Paris is all over ILM suddenly : the buzz is on ! (and to be honest, although I like the pharrell, I'm much more excited by the Paris !).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Stars Are Blind" is easily one of my favorite singles of the year so far.

Zwan (miccio), Friday, 28 July 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

I find this Neptunes backlash odd. I think I like them more than ever right now. The sunny yacht-soul they've been doing lately is really doing it for me.

"Say Somthing" + "Touch" + "I Wanna Love You Girl" + "Angel" + "Margarita" + "Number One" + whatever beautiful recent Neptunes R&B production they've done lately and I'm forgetting = my heaven.

It's Rodney, currently unemployed! (R. J. Greene), Friday, 28 July 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

And saying they aren't talented anymore is a rediculous statement.
