IS IT THEIR KRAUTROCK-INSPIRED "AMBIENT RECORD"?????????????????????

Old School (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I hope they go all space-rock and trippy.

Keith C (lync0), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I hope the entire band has been replaced by synths at long last.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I can't get over how stupid that title is!

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

They should call it "FIST IMPRESSIONS OF EARTH," that would kick ass.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Earth's new album The Last Moments of the Strokes forthcoming.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

no 15 minute songs, then

Old School (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I can't get over how stupid that title is!
-- Raymond Cummings (gracefulas...), September 20th, 2005.

Not at all. Since Julian Casablancas' problems have never struck me particularly human, their thoughts on their gradual interaction with the human race should be interesting.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Unless it's a TRIPLE ALBUM!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't see any mention of the word "Modern" in that tracklist, WTF

I am still looking forward to this, though, in the hopes that it will not sound like fucking Gang of Four.

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

aw i still love The Strokes. i'm glad they are back! back!! back!!!

piscesboy, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

I am still looking forward to this, though, in the hopes that it will not sound like fucking Gang of Four.

just like all their other music doesn't

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Juice Box

Is this about Drew Barrymore's vagina?

15 Minutes Of Pain
Vision Of Division

Ask Me Anything

I like how they introduce the last 5 songs.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

hahahahaha (to both of the last two posts)

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I meant that as "The Strokes are back and therefore able to save us from increasingly-uninteresting takes on funless disco-punk* because hey it was fun in 2002 but enough already".

*DFA = fun as fuck

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Eyes Of The World

Told ya they are going hippie!

Keith C (lync0), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

just like all their other music doesn't

-- Matos-Webster Dictionary (michaelangelomato...), September 20th, 2005. (M Matos)

word. I'm trying to figure out if Disco Violence has not heard Gang of Four, not heard the Strokes, or both....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Can we think of bands that have "gone Gang of Four"? Mostly I think of new bands springing up that way.

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I think "sounds like Gang of Four" now means "has the Blondie 'Heart of Glass' beat on an least one song"

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

MABYE THEY SHOULD CALL IT FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF GIRTH!! JULES SEEMS TO BE GETTING A BIT TUBBY THESE DAYS

Alex in NYC's reaction will be titled First Impressions of the Previous Strokes Album Prevent Me From Caring.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

it sounds a bit different, now i'm ready for them...

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I wish the Shins would stop sounding like Subway Sect.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Trust me, I am a champion of comparing the Strokes only to bands they actually sound like and posited them as something I'd rather hear than another band that (unlike the Strokes) sounds like Gang of Four only duller. GET ONE READING GLASSES.

I'd spend more time arguing, but apparently the Strokes are THE CRAMPS NOW, HOLY SHIT

disco violence (disco violence), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

According to Billboard, it sounds like Henry Mancini, Patti Smith, Tom Verlaine, U2 and AC/DC. Not all at once.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

That YSI isn't working :(

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

ah sorry gotcha disco v

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Looking forward to more Strokes as per usual.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

where did that mp3 come from? is the whole album leaked?

craptain crunch, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

That's a fun track, but I hope the rest is prettier and sadder as per usual.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Juice Box sounds kind of like The Smiths to me? anyone?

Jake Lo, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure.. what to think of this. All the descriptions said it was different.. but.. christ man.. this is like.. WTF.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

hahaha. it sounds hilarious. might be good. right now it's not really sounding good to my ear. They've definitely pulled a bit of a "Blue Orchid", but "Blue Orchid" is way better.

The Strokes were like "fuck Television, we love us some Collective Soul!"

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Eyes Of The World

Told ya they are going hippie!

-- Keith C (lyncounio...), September 20th, 2005 12:50 PM

dude, if that was *the* "Eyes of the World" I'd shit a brick!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Tell Me About It!!!!
I LOVE THE STROKES!!! Damn.... Now I'm like those Iron Maiden hardcore fans who like every release by their artist.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

wow this is sort of close to what i was expecting...but jeez...he sounds like fucking thom yorke on that chorus when he sings "you're so cold"...will have to get used to this.

bubo, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Holy Peter Gunn riff, Batman!

I don't know what to think of this.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

sez spin:

"EVENING SUN" Chill-out Strokes, with soothing, atmospheric guitars. Not exactly cocktail punk, but mellow in a relative sense and literal in a lyrical sense. Sunsets are, occasionally, really pretty.

"JUICEBOX" Opening with a mock-metal bass riff, this first single candidate's flanged solo and Stooges-worthy lyrics ("Standing in the light field / Waiting for some action") could make it a radio monster. "I remember people saying this track is ugly," Casablancas says. "I think it's got a great personality."

"UNTITLED 1" A reggae stomper with big guitars and what could be the lyrics of the year: "I hate them all / I hate myself / I hate myself for hating them / So I drink some more / I love them all / I drink even more / I hate them even more than I did before."

"YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE" A poppy homage to the Cars' Ben Orr, with power chords and a clean vocal mix (no slurred singing). "Dave Kahne liked it when I sang out of my range," Casablancas says. "A chair would squeal and he'd say, 'Hit that note.'"

"RAZOR BLADE" Guaranteed to remind anyone over 30 (or anyone who frequents gay piano bars) of Barry Manilow's "Mandy." "We wanna sound like stuff from the future you've never heard before that references stuff from the past," Casablancas explains.

"VISION OF DIVISION" One of the album's more overtly '80s tracks, with a synthy riff that recalls Room on Fire's "12:51"; a dubby bridge in which Casablancas complains, "All that I do is wait for you"; and a guitar freak-out that sounds like the Charlie Daniels Band.

"ASK ME ANYTHING" Over a spooky mellotron riff (actually a computer), Casablancas sings a series of non sequiturs, like "Don't be a coconut."

"HEART IN A CAGE" More hard rock, with nifty marching drums. Casablancas' urban ennui is a good fit with the darker, slithering metal vibe. But even though this track (along with "Juicebox") may set off alarmists, "We're not Velvet Revolver," Hammond assures.

"KILLING LIES" The ballad. Gothy, quasitribal drumming that recalls Yeah Yeah Yeahs at their dreamiest. An appreciative nod to the great, brooding modern rock of the '80s.

"EYES OF THE WORLD" The metallic and the new wave collide here, with weird echo effects and big guitar crescendos. And the fake ending totally faked us out.

"UNTITLED 2" Possibly the most "classic Strokes" track. Dirty, New York City pop, looser drumming, and evidence of the band's heavy (though seldom explored) debt to Blondie.

"FEAR OF SLEEP" Distorted vocals return for this oddity in which Casablancas repeats the title, Lou Reed style, as if warding off ghosts of long nights past. "I don't sleep anymore," Casablancas says of his inspiration. "The worst is when you've been up all night and the morning news comes on."

"UNTITLED 3" Swirling burlesque, reminiscent of the Doors' "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)" or everything Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds ever recorded.

"UNTITLED 4" Another jaunty, percussive, new-wave raver that could get play from radio and -- provided the video isn't a nod to Modern Girls, Electric Dreams, or Vision Quest (à la the Tron-obsessed clip for "12:51")

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

"juicebox" is their "hash pipe" innit

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

i predict spencer will like "killing lies"

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I really like the "yr so cooooold" part...that's kinda soaring and nice.

the verses though...man...ug...i dunno.....maybe this is a "grower"...i hope so.

"juicebox" is their "hash pipe" innit
-- jermaine (noblemusi...)

haha

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

they're best when they're a '50s r&b band. this first track is disconcerting...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

A reggae stomper!

Over a spooky mellotron riff (actually a computer) I take it that that means some Mellotron samples then. Who says 'a computer' in that context?

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

maybe the computer is playing a real mellotron?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

this is pretty 'aggro' for the strokes

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

the intro at least... "WHO CAME ALOOOOONG FOR THE RIDE"

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Then all hell broke loose.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Is Mis Fit

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

After listening to it about 20 times, juicebox still holds up for me. It's pretty busy and there are several different layers to listen for, so the track doesn't get boring quickly. just toward the very end, it loses it's steam.
don't hate it, I don't love it, but I wouldn't mind it showing up on random in the middle of a mix.
definitely a grower.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

I am still looking forward to this, though, in the hopes that it will not sound like fucking Gang of Four.

Go jerk off Rambo-style to your limited Beefheart album.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Ok I have to hear the album now.

Can someone tell me the difference between a metal bass riff and a mock metal bass riff?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

the mock metal bass riff is made of tofu.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

my care-o-meter just broke.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I remember someone saying a long while ago that the album would be available on p2p by august... WRONG !!
anyway, haven't listened to juicebox yet but i've DL it and waiting to get home... slowly getting excited...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

has this album leaked? if so is it real?

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

it sounds soo much like thom yorke during some parts it wacky. its really different but it has grown on me. some parts are still horrific in a way unimaginable but all in all, it could have been worse.

ThisisMe, Saturday, 24 September 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

it's alright as album track, but it really won't do much as single

kcook, Sunday, 25 September 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

i just downloaded this and it's 14 tracks of silence! not really my cup of tea, but it's cool that they've tried something different.

rio natsume, Sunday, 25 September 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

MusicMagic Mix of The Strokes - "Automatic Stop" returns:

Weezer - "Island in the Sun"
Aerosmith - "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)"
Our Lady Peace - "Superman is Dead"
The Dandy Warhols - "Every Day Should Be a Holiday"
Brooks & Dunn - "Every River"

JKex (JKex), Sunday, 25 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Strokes "Juicebox" returns:

Motorhead - "Jailbait"
Andrew WK - "Don't Stop Living In The Red"
Jane's Addiction - "Wrong Girl"

JKex (JKex), Sunday, 25 September 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

c'mon, it's a great song!! it's more of waht i've expected.
In some pieces of the song julian's voice soynds a bit like alez kapranos and thome york, but it's his own style. the bassline is gorgeus and sound very different of what the strokes were. The guitar riffs are... fantastic!!!
THE STROKES RULE!!

kennyb, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

OMG I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! (juicebox)

At first i didn't like it but its so radioheadey in some parts but obviously strokey and soooo funky.

The you're so cold part is FANDABBYDOZI

http://www.ear.fm/Encyclopedia%20O/ocasek_rick.jpg

this sounds like me but not gooder

Rick Ocasek, Monday, 3 October 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

Now that sounds like yr standard Strokes album track. More of a "Someday" rather than an "Alone, Together" though, so that's good.

Are there any more tracks floating around yet?

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 3 October 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

great great songs
they're back

Giacomo, Monday, 3 October 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

hello?? has the WHOLE album leaked yet??

fottiti, Monday, 3 October 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

"You Only Live Once" seems like an extended verse. It's a bit frustrating (sounds more promising than the other one though).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 3 October 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

better than juicebox....less than good. i like the bridge/chorusy part....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 3 October 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

better than juicebox. keep your fingers crossed for the album. sounds like, at worst, we have another room en fuego.

adiramn, Monday, 3 October 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

both songs pretty meh... but that's only 2 out of 15...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

I really like both. Juicebox has grown on me a lot. Julians Vocals kill on 'you only live once' and they seem to have taken the drum machine esque drums another stage. On this they are super robotic.

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

are the traxx leaking one by one in a rachel stylee or sumthin?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

"You Only Live Once" is absolutely fantastic.

anyone has the mp3??
please

both songs pretty fucking outstanding

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

i miss the lazy sounding julian.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

thats a pretty good point, christopher. he does sound like he's trying to shake it up. its great, though; especially since hearing YOLO, i just have this strong faith that ill love the new album, although it may take a few listens for it to settle in...

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

love the new songs .. i already heard juice box and you only live once and i love them!!they sound fantastic
i hope to hear the new album soon
i belive in strokes and in casablancas creations... wich are soo familiar to me becouse i listened them the past two years every day...

Song number three:

15 Min. of Pain: http://s32.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1O8RRELIABLGG0XQLNI217A3A3

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 20 October 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

more variation!

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Interestingly enough this apparently leaked on the Strokes message board. This is the worst of the three so far. Only listen to leaked songs a few times and make up my mind when I hear the full album.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

More like 4 1/2 minutes of pain! Hah!

(this is like the worst Strokes song I've ever heard, and I'm generally fairly forgiving with them)

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

is it supposed to sound like that

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

it shuts down my winamp. That's never happened before.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

hm. It shut down my itunes, as well.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

it sounds really wrong (like in addition to not being a very good melody the actual file seems pretty fucked up in some way)

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I just got another version of the song, and that file posted up there be truly buggered.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Thursday, 20 October 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

TEH STROKES GAVE MY IPOD THE BIRD FLU!!!!!!!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

this is a very, very bad song

jermaine (jnoble), Thursday, 20 October 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

it shuts down my winamp. That's never happened before.

Me too. Is it some horrific record company DRM thing I don't understand?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 20 October 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

i deleted from my ipod...it's healthy again. that song is a virus.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I downloaded a clean file. It's still bad.

Though it seems Julian has maybe discovered Shane MacGowan, or at least the idea of slurring drunkenly in 6/8 time. The straight 4/4 part is tolerable.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Sorry I must have somehow screwed things up, as it played fine for me. I have a brand new computer and in the process of going the Foobar route for listening to music on this thing. Meanwhile I have been deleting, adding and downloading different things. I probably have a conflict somewhere and therefore it messed up this rip somehow. There is a very steep learning curve with Foobar and I’m not even close to being finished with that project.

Someone else is going to have to rip this song for you, it all over the place. So the next time I do post something I will test it out and make sure it’s correct before I post it, again sorry.

BeeOK (boo radley), Thursday, 20 October 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

can't even bother about this track after the 2 first... makes me wonder if i'm even gonna buy/download it (and i really liked the two others).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 21 October 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

i've listened to it twice, and i don't plan on listening to it ever again.

jermaine (jnoble), Friday, 21 October 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

There's another song going about. I got it here...

http://www.livejournal.com/community/thestrokes/

I'm gonna go for a 30/70 good/bad split on the album!

"The Other Side" is actually pretty good.

It really achieves, I don't know, Durstian levels of lyrical idiocy, and I find that appealing.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

The Strokes aren't talking much about the video for "Juicebox," the first single from their forthcoming First Impressions of Earth; the clip will be shot this weekend in Manhattan with Michael Palmieri (Foo Fighters, Finch) at the helm. What little details they've revealed, they've revealed with mulish reluctance. But burnished frontman Julian Casablancas' description of the video is intriguing, to say the least.

"We're doing a live performance at a radio station [in the video], which will be broadcast all across New York," he explained. "There might be full-frontal nudity. MTV will not play this video because it's so controversial, [but] it will be groundbreaking."

A source involved with the video's casting had even more intriguing information to add: The treatment calls for people of all genders, ages, ethnicities and sexual preferences who are "comfortable" with exhibitionistic displays of love, tenderness and affection - to put it very mildly.

Casablancas and the rest of the Strokes are keeping tight-lipped about the production because it's first and foremost an ever-changing beast - scenes are being cut, others added. It's a work in progress. But there's also the video's ending, which is set in stone. That, the bandmembers say, they'd like to keep veiled, for now - it's a surprise. But according to manager Ryan Gentiles, in the video, the Strokes will be seen entering the radio station, and they'll perform the "Juicebox" cut; as the song goes out over the station's airwaves, it sparks frenzied make-out sessions between whoever hears the track. Beyond that, he, too, remains mum - can't ruin the surprise, can we?

"There might be full-frontal nudity. MTV will not play this video because it's so controversial, [but] it will be groundbreaking."

preferably Caucasian, though

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I just keep getting more and more embarrassed that I like this band. BUT I CAN'T STOP!

Although those last two leaked tracks are helping.

in addition to juicebox and 15 minutes, i mean. the cover i quite like, actually.

But I sent you away
Oh Mandy, well you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today
Oh Mandy

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 22 October 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

is it just me or does the chorus on razor blade remind anyone else of another song? it's driving me insane when I cant think of the name of the other song!!

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 23 October 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

You're mistaken, Lovelace. None of the Strokes' songs sound like anything that came before.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 23 October 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

funny.

the only other strokes song that actually sounds like another song is soma(=televisions's see no evil). other than that the strokes just have a similar sound and style(in general) with other bands.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 23 October 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Lovelace--as James Mitchell pointed out in the post just above yours, the chorus is stolen directly from Barry Mainlow's "Mandy."

michaeln (kid loki), Sunday, 23 October 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Manilow, that is.

michaeln (kid loki), Sunday, 23 October 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

Ew. "Razor Blade" is vile. But it's fun to sing "Oh Margie, You came and you found me a turkey" to the chorus.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

all genders, ages, ethnicities

You left out the fact the sexual preferences will be mostly heterosexual with some attractive lesbians and a few token homosexual men filling out the rest. THE ERA OF FURRY, PEDOPHILE AND ZOOPHILE SEGREGATION IS OVER, ROCK DUDES

Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 23 October 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

That new song is so GOOD!!!!

Hawaii Aloha is excellent

this album is gonna rule

craptain crunch, Sunday, 23 October 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

"You Only Live Once" is a nice rewrite of that first track on ROF, but "Razor Blade" is generic Strokes and "Juicebox" is sub-Vines. If this does better than ROF I'll eat my hat.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 23 October 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I am loving everything except "Juicebox" a LOT. Like, I'm really surprised. I had no interest in this record but now suddenly am wondering if it's gonna be best-of-year material. I had no strong feelings whatever about Room On Fire.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I really like the first verse of "YOLO." I think the faux-Ocasek enunciation is great. Then he loses the perkiness and goes back to the usual slack yelling.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 23 October 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

The guitar in the verse Razorblade is awesome.

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Sunday, 30 October 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

hawaii aloha isn't on the album, captain.

razorblade turns out to be the best song. m-e-h.

oh this is good.

piscesboy, Friday, 25 November 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear:

"Last week we did some press for Malaysia," says Moretti, rocking back and forth on a stool. "I find the language barrier to be difficult a lot of the time. They ask what is, I suppose, a fair question, but it's just phrased so bizarre, and in a weird accent, 'You. Are. So. Coool. No?' Whaddya say to that? I was like, 'Yes. The Coolest!'" You can, they say, so easily fall into the rhythm of delivering set answers. "What's your favourite colour?" Moretti asks. "Blue. Obviously." "It has to be blue," nods Valensi. "I actually only see blue," volunteers Moretti, deadpan. "I have a problem with my vision where I can't see any other colour. You all look like Smurfs to me."

I read this earlier, and the 'subtle' references in the first sentence of the fourth paragraph made me think, "oh ho ho, they're going to end up doing the interview stoned" and then about ten lines later they're rolling spliffs.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 25 November 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Friday, 25 November 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

I especially love the guitars in the pre-chorus. Based on "Juicebox" and the other track I've heard ("You Only Live Once"), the album's going to have this fantastic big, clean guitar sound.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 25 November 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

the 4 track promo has leaked! 'the other side' is like a ohnny cash number only with slurred drawled words that sound like joulian wrote them while he was stoned. not that this isnt a good thing. the gee-tar on every track so far is fantastic.

Hooooooly shit...

'Ask Me anything' sounds like Magnetic Fields circa '69 Love Songs'.

Yep. Just rename them. I think either 'Ize' is missing 4 seconds at the end, or it is just supposed to cut out.

Ize of the World is great!

is there a song with hit potential on the album?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Friday, 2 December 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

i think razor blade is one of the more overly produced tracks and sounds pretty much like a radio smash.

You Only Live Once/Razor Blade

piscesboy, Friday, 2 December 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Ize of the World is really great. I felt compelled to play through that one twice on my initial run through... not many of the tracks seem as strong or compelling as the initial leaks...

Christopher Costello (CGC), Saturday, 3 December 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

I think so, yes. Notice that the last word he's saying 's "vaporize." I believe they're trying to be clever.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 3 December 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

i'm surprised at how much i enjoy this album. especially "vision of division" and "heart in a cage". it's kind of awesome that they've almost completely dropped the whole "hey, we're the coolest band on the planet" thing.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Saturday, 3 December 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

blocked. bugger.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 3 December 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

this one has more filler than the past ("other side" "15 minutes" "killing lies") but the highs are worth it ("you only live once" "heart in a cage" and "ize of the world" are as good as anything they've done before)

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Sunday, 4 December 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

ize of the world, 15 minutes and red light are my favorites by far.

*loves them*

this album is nowhere near the quality of the debut but it might be better than room on fire. that's always something!

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 4 December 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it's as good as their last 2 (especially room on fire) but it's still pretty good.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 4 December 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

ize of the world - it took me awhile to work out the meaning of the sudden ending.

christ im slow.

this is what i reckon any way but....

the last line reads as "cities to vapor-"

and the titles "ize of the world"

so the last line should read "cities to vaaporize of the world" only it gets vapourized before he finishes the sentace.

right?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Monday, 5 December 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

this album got stale really quick.

1st Listen=I Love It
2nd Listen=Eh, It's Good
3rd Listen=Why the fuck am i listening to this?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

I've been enjoying it - most of the songs sound really good, or even great at times, though none have really caught on with me yet (got into my head, make me go "yeah!" when they come on, etc.) other than the first two. ("You Only Live Once" is the absolute jam.) And I've already gotten tired of the stretch between "Juicebox" and "Electricityscape." ("Heart in a Cage" really bugs me, for some reason. Those stagey little "duh-duh-duh-DUH!" flourishes... the first line...)

The lyrics are a problem throughout - there are some real boners. Especially the chorus lyrics of "Ize of the World" - yecch.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

actually, the lyrics to "Ize Of The World" are quite good, and surprisingly orwellian (might just be me)...from, my perspective it seems that he's discussing how the world is in a dream, not truly awake to reality, and then he lists the unimportant/sinister things people care about (a desk to organize, generations to de-sensitize, enemies to neutralize, cities to vaporize)

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

near-perfect - "You Only Live Once", "Juicebox". "Heart in a Cage", "Razorblade", "Vision of Division", "Fear Of Sleep", "Ize Of The World"

okay - "Electrocityscape", "Red Light", "Ask Me Anything"

not so hot - "other side", "Ask me anything", "Killing Lies", "15 minutes"

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I guess I just never needed to hear Julian C. (or maybe anyone) sing, "A BODY TO DEODERIIIIIIIIIIZE..."

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Thes best lyrics are clearly "Take a shit" and "Don't be a coconut"

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

You can hear how hard they worked on it, and I think they mostly got what they were aiming for - but it's an album full of Big, Impressive Songs you can't dance to(!), with lyrics you don't want to sing along with. And I don't know how I feel about a Strokes album that's not much FUN!

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

That said, it is good. "Fear of Sleep" is my current #2 fave.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Whats with the hate for "Other side" ? I fuckin' love that track ! I could totally see it as a single, as I sing along to it all the time (especially "Nooooobody's waitin' for meeeeee, ooooon the ooother siiide").

My other favourite is "Heart in a Cage", classic Iggy Pop -type tune there.

But the album sucks. I can't stand that one part of "Juicebox" (that leads up to "Your so coooold", terrible shift in the song's tone). Also not feelin' that "Mandy" rip-off song. I can't remember which one it is, but I can't listen to it without thinking of Neil Diamond (translation, I can't listen to it).

A few classics, but a real dud of an album on the whole.

Erock LAzron, Wednesday, 21 December 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe how much it sounds like "Mandy." Blatant rip-off. Good tune, though.

'Twan (miccio), Friday, 23 December 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

speaking of the "Juicebox" single...

"THANK YOU to all the fans in the U.S. who have given us our FIRST #1
in... well.... basically anything!
the JUICEBOX cd-single is the #1 selling single in AMERICA this week
on the BILLBOARD TOP 100 SINGLES SALES chart...

it was released DEC.13th nationwide, and includes the b-side "Hawaii"
and the uncensored director's cut of the video for "Juicebox"
of course, it's still available at stores across the country..."

that's from their manager. so i just assumed, you know, that it was true.

Double True!, Saturday, 24 December 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

The last album was good... but something was missing. Reptila was really the only song that I could get into. However, this new album is amazing. I think the strokes were thrown into the public too fast, this should have been their break through album.

If you have a p2p client, and you dont care to be a thief, download "Heart in a Cage", it is my favorite song off the album.

Mason Balistreri, Monday, 26 December 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

i might be mishearing it, but red light's "i saw your face/ then i heard that song/ it was so inviting/ it hurt my bones" is a terrific pop lyric

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 26 December 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

and the non-sequitur follow-up: "well it looked like you/ but your eyes were grey/ and your hair is gone/ but your mind's okay" is not as plantonically pop ideal but still intriguing

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 26 December 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm drunk, yes.

jermaine (jnoble), Monday, 26 December 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

This album rocks; the hooks are extended and more plentiful, Casablancas' vocals/lyrics are greatly improved, especially for his delivery on "Ize of the World".

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 30 December 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

'Ask Me Anything' is really great, also there are a couple of good rock songs on the album, though I have to listen it a few times.

zeus (zeus), Saturday, 7 January 2006 10:01 (twenty years ago)

That "Hawaii" song is pretty good too... it seems so... happy (!?).

fb (ozewayo), Saturday, 7 January 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I actually think this is their best album. And I'm not just being annoying. It sags, sure, but the first 5 tracks alone are better than anything else they've done. And that's my word.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 7 January 2006 23:57 (twenty years ago)

It inspired me to throw on Is This It again, and for that I'm grateful.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 8 January 2006 02:41 (twenty years ago)

"Hello world, it's Julian from The Strokes. WE'RE GOING TO PHONE THIS ONE IN!"

This record is absolute boring crap. The first record was awesomely simplistic. What I figure is this, JP "comb-over" Bowersock and R. Gentiles found the Strokes in 2000 (or whenever) and figured these dudes had the looks, but the music weren't cutting it. They hired some "NY sound" songwriters and bought the best of the batch of songs. Sweet hair, moist teen-girls, everybody wins. After 2 years (or whatever) of worldwide domination, The Strokes get big heads (and some sweet trim, natch) and decide the write some of their own songs and we get 11:59 (or whatever it was called). It goes over OK (but was actually a total snoozer, but what do you care?) so they convince the powers that be (greenback counters, sloppy sixths) that they can write a whole record, they take a good two years to do it, and here you have it. IT'S GARBAGE MUSIC. THE WEED HAS TAKEN OVER, TURN THE BLACKLIGHT OFF.

Why isn't there a moderately popular band called The Storks?

anybody been able to get through for tix to hammerstein?
is there a secret?

eatage, Friday, 27 January 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

it's weird how this record keeps growing on me

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

the more i listen the more i like it. it drags a bit in the middle, and some of the songs go on too long, but i really enjoy the production.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 27 January 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I keep coming back to it - the first two songs plus the second half are really satisfying, and even the songs I'm not hot on have moments that get me - like the bridge of "On the Other Side," and bits of "Ize of the World" (I especially like - "Night after night, you turn off the light, you don't fall asleep right away..."). His singing is actually what carries those moments (though it can be a turn-off elsewhere).

Fanz of old-skool Strokes should definitely get or hear "Hawaii," the b-side - it's really fun.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I also dig the high-concept liner notes/artwork. There's something cute and Smashing Pumpkins-y in their big ambitions for, and pride in, their own stuff, which appeals to me in the same way the band does in general. I feel like I would've liked the Strokes just as much in high school (or college) as I do now, which I can't say about many (or any) "current" bands from then or now.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Hello! MY name is Hulio Casablanca. MY band haat released one of the bestest albums of the year, but we'll be expecting low marks from Hipster Fuckbuckets, so don't worry about our feelings. I'm singing like Shane MacGowan lately just for a laff. Enjoy yr Arctic Mernkeys mp3s, duckwads.

Hulio Carpetbaggers (noodle vague), Monday, 30 January 2006 01:54 (twenty years ago)

"heart in a cage" blows me away.

dancing chicken (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 30 January 2006 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Cowboy Folk riffs, basso profundo vocals, the sound of the city as cartoon nightmare, general Western Union de-inventing the wheel musical genius, fuck all y'all haters.

Madam, I Am Not a Doctor (noodle vague), Monday, 30 January 2006 02:13 (twenty years ago)

tenor profundo, i think you mean

dancing chicken (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 30 January 2006 02:18 (twenty years ago)

It actually got released?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 January 2006 02:19 (twenty years ago)

xpost

yAh, ist tru mostly, but the "on the other side when those saints come marching in bits" sounded base.

Madam, I Am Not a Doctor (noodle vague), Monday, 30 January 2006 02:21 (twenty years ago)

The first six songs are wonderful; the rest, as I've pointed out elsewhere, support the conclusion Julian reaches in "Ask Me Anything" that he's got, well, nothing to say.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 30 January 2006 02:50 (twenty years ago)

ABSENCE OF THING TO SAY IN UNDERMINING OF POP GROUP CREDIBILITY SHOCKER

Why is 'Hawaii' better than anything else on the album?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 19 February 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

It isn't. This is my fav Strokes rec and increasingly one of my fav recs ever, which has come as something of a surprise. I've listened to it nonstop last couple days.

President Evil, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)

i was unable to get excited about it at the time

perhaps...maybe just...could be due for a revisiting

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

didn't care then, don't care now.

funny farm, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 05:49 (eighteen years ago)

i still think IN HER PRIME should get a proper release.

pisces, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Not a bad album, just cut the three or four fillers, and it would be really great.

zeus, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

"killing lies" through "fear of sleep" just bury this album, though i guess the solo on "ize of the world" is cool enough.
"you only live once" and "razorblade" are two of their best songs ever, and i'm basically content with walking away from FIOE with that.

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone have the vinyl of this? i couldn't take the super loud mastering on the CD vers. and was wondering if the vinyl maybe makes this a little more human sounding?

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

it is true that this album sags but the ending duo of evening sun and red light make it seem soooo much better. my fav strokes album.

mizzell, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

also, electricityscape is maybe my fav strokes song.

mizzell, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

Not really that bothered. When will people realise that Room on Fire is their masterpiece?

When will people realise that Room on Fire is their masterpiece?

THX.

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

But it just... is

I know, right?, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

I have the vinyl, as it happens. A wonderful sounding record it is, too. I think they've gotten better with each record!

President Evil, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

what a dire fucking band

stephen, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

Has any band had such a horrible influence on "indie" since they came out? Of course it's not their fault they spawned countless imitators, but still.

Cunga, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 06:59 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

how do folks feel about this now?

revisiting it this week for the first time in a while, still holds up mostly, though maybe they should've cut like 3-5 songs, saved 'em for a julian solo album or something.

Beatrix Kiddo, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 12:04 (seventeen years ago)

Meh. They're a band that totally exhausted their sound with just two -- and really maybe just one -- discs (Interpol is another such band).

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 29 July 2008 12:13 (seventeen years ago)

Room of Fire was such a perfect distillation of their sound (or pose?). They were doomed because the idea of growing or expanding their sound immediately voids anything that made them great, their two dimensionality.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 12:39 (seventeen years ago)

I can't help but really love this band. I only ever go back to that first album, but the singing still hits me in all the right places, the riffs are just simple and catchy enough for my put-put lizard brain, and if I can manage to put their image out of my head then all is well. Singing sonds a little acerbic on this one (from what I've heard in youtube vidoes) though I don't dislike what I've heard.

Mostly the same goes for Interpol while we're bringing them up. Daniel, Esq. otm basically.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

"sounds" yeesh

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

xpost to IK,R?... I was kinda hoping they would go the way of the Ramones and have at least repeated themselves successfully for four or five albums before petering out for whatever reasons.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

Oh well.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

Should have rushed out a covers record after that first one, obvs
