Which rappers do you think may have actually killed someone in the past?

For example, Ice Cube always talks about "blasting people" on Straight Outta Compton, but I doubt he's ever shot anyone in real life. It's probably just part of his act.

Which ones are believable? I think Slick Rick actually shot his cousin, right? What are some more examples?

I'm sure Fat Joe / Joe Crack has murdered a few motherfuckers. Ditto Big Pun. Didn't Keith Murray stab somebody?

Didn't the Sugarhill Gang kill the Furious Five ?

blunt (blunt), Sunday, 2 October 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

And then Run Dmc killed the Furious Five.

E. Money Bags (he was a 90s rapper from Queens and made a few records with Nas, CNN/Noreaga, Kool G. Rap) killed some dude and then got killed himself, on order of Kenneth "Supreme" Mcgriff (the Queens kingpin from the Supreme Team who 50 Cent mentioned on his old track "ghetto quaran" and then got shot for "dry snitchin'" and funded Ja Rule's label Murder Inc with his drug money).

Snoop, perhaps..? Although he got away with it.

Jay Z is rumored to have killed someone.

Fat Joe hung out with some really nasty people like Charlie Rock L.D (who ending up serving 20 years or so for murder) and Tony Montana (who's now dead) so it's a possibilty.

There's the very first NYC gangsta/thug rap group Mobstyle, who consisted of the 80s Harlem drug kinpin Azie plus Gangsta Lou, Pretty Tone Capone and Whip Wop who all were known for not fucking around.

Eric B has a very real reputation too (funding early Eric B. & Rakim records via drug money, hanging with killers like Alpo and the original 50 Cent, putting Large Professor of Main Source in hospital and running Kool G. Rap out of NYC to Arizona after Eric B's crew started killing 'G Rap's crew off).

Although, any thug credentials Eric B. has may be nullified by his mock-brawling with Stone Cold Steve Austin in 1997 when he was doing security for Mike Tyson's WWF stint.

More seriously, I believe I read someplace, like B-Real's blog or some shit (which I can't find now of course) that B had been pretty heavily involved in gangbanging, and the song "Hand on the Pump" or maybe "How I Could Just Kill a Man" was based on some incident where he shot a guy in self defense, but didn't quite kill him, and ended up doing time on ag assault or similar.

Helpful, eh?

Regarding Paul C + Superlover Cee & Cassanova Rud, they were investigated after his murder but nothing ever came of it.

It's generally thought that Paul C's wife had him killed so she could run away with his brother. If i remember right they both disappeared.

If you do a google you can probably turn up that Paul C article where the writer talks to Superlover Cee & Casanova Rud in detail about the murder.

"Do the james" is still one of the heaviest rap records ever. The way Paul C actually managed to improve the "impeach the president" drumbreak..Damn.

Hammer did time as a teenager for shooting a convenience store clerk.

no way! he seems so nice

My, my, my music hits me so hard
Makes me say "Oh, my Lord"
Thank you for blessing me

And I'm known as such
And this is a beat, uh, you can't touch

I tell you, homeboy

as far as I know I think Hammer's (aka STANLEY BURRELL lol) claim to thug life was scalping a football ticket when he was a kid

mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

though he really shoulda been arrested for his performance at Universal back in 2009 cuz that shit was criminal

Jim Gordon wrote the "Layla" coda, which is the best part of that song, and not even the Goodfellas montage can erase from my brain what that guy did to his poor mama (with a HAMMER, no less) - I hear the "Layla" coda, and I instantly think "murder by hammer."

and pre-empting obvious "Can't Touch This" joke

Spade Cooley, Western Swing star:

In 1961, his wife Ella Mae, age 37, expressed her wish to be divorced, and a drunken Cooley responded by beating her and stomping on her body until she died. Cooley was convicted of first-degree murder by a Kern County jury, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

Wouldn't it be kind of funny if like one of the guys from De La Soul or P.M. Dawn had capped someone? It would totally be shocking.

i was talking to this dude who runs a club on the german/swiss border, who gets a lot of varied acts coming through. one time they had de la soul playing there, and he said they were total pricks. they got there, were like "where are our fucking drugs!" and proceeded to mope around in the dressing room till a suitable amount of cocaine was sourced. after the show, which was apparently all of 15 minutes long, they retired to the bar where they proceeded to be such complete assholes that one of the bartenders was finally like "yeah, i'll get you your drink if you'll start acting like a decent human being" or something, whereupon one de la dude jumped over the bar, grabbed a bottle, smashed it and started attacking the staff with it. clubowner dude jumps in and gets a scar across his face for the trouble. i saw it (it's what what prompted the discussion) and it was a big ass scary fuckin scar, right across dudes face, just barely missing the eyeball.

i can't really 100% confirm the story, but i hung with this dude for several days and he seemed like a believable guy. and it *was* first hand, not "this happened to my bro's best friend" or whatever.

flip side, de la played my college back in 88 and showed up at my friends house party afterwards, and apparently they were all totally nice guys. i guess 10-15 years of snorting drugs while everyone kisses your ass no matter what you do can change ya.

President Keyes, Thursday, 20 January 2011 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Pres, and they address that on De La Soul Is Dead, but Mesiahwannabe's story, or rather the story the club owner on the German/Swiss border told him, sounds fucking ridiculous.

ice cr?m, Thursday, 20 January 2011 02:06 (fifteen years ago)

Sure, I just mean that recent cocaine-damaged De Le assholism isn't completely out of character as per rep. I dunno if it's necessarily worse than, say, Big Pun smashing Rocafella dudes over the head with champagne bottles and Fat Joe trying to smooth things over. Intoxicated demons, etc.

President Keyes, Thursday, 20 January 2011 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

i dunno, someone mentioned thinking it would be funny to hear de la soul thug stories, and once i met a guy with a huge scar on his face he said he got from plug one-of-the-members in a bar fight. what's ridiculous exactly? for the record, i hung with this guy for like 5 days once when i was on vacation, he only got started on the stories a few days in when we discovered we worked in the same industry, and all his other stories were just realistic-detail laden stories about semi-obscure indie bands he liked coming through his club, and, like, liquor zoning laws in europe and their effect on club going demographics. it's possible the story was bullshit, but i thought he was believable. i've certainly heard the "band shows up, demands drug X, won't play till they get it" story before from friends who've worked in clubs.

He is surprisingly circumspect. “A good question… I think I am probably the only rapper right now with a combover, and I think the dress code is a little bit unique. I think most of it is visual. I don’t think I have much to say that is really interesting. But I think I look cool.”
