"The way that we TALK. The way that we WALK."

These are GOLDEN YEARS.

This is probably not going to be a top three-er.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

This really is three different songs spliced together, isn't it?

I think they should have stuck with the vampy piano thing, in a Nancy and Lee style.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

love it!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

gah - you had to post this on a Friday night!? I won't have d/l capabilities until Monday now :(

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

The piano is very knees-up xmassy, isn't it? Office party etc etc, I am visualising Cheryl peeping out from beneath an overlarge santa hat and things.

The joins are way less seamless than on "The Show", which may hinder radio prospects. But it is charmingly clunky and very delirious in parts. And "Love Machine" sounded like an unhit, at first.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

I only just got it! It isn't going anywhere, probably.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

I am on the fence about this. It's Girls Aloud, so I give benefit of the doubt and will listen another 15 times.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

"There will be TWO Girls Aloud singles before Christmas - 'Biology' on November 14 then another one we're not allowed to tell you anything about one month later." - Popjustice

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 7 October 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

i must say this song is at first a bit awkward. i was like..what the hell are they doing, then it gets going and i'm like...perhaps. it grows on you very quickly.

mine seems to be only of medium to low quality. does anyone have a higher or better quality version of this song, cause i feel that if it gets super clear i would fall into an orgasm pit....perhaps.

ollie, Friday, 7 October 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!, Saturday, 8 October 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

oh so this is tom's 'simon reynolds book'

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Saturday, 8 October 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

i want nadine to teach me biology.

retroboy, Saturday, 8 October 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

OK, that was wierd. The bluesy piano intro (that's repeated somewhere in the middle) is definitely not my cup of tea. Things start to get better once the verse kicks in, and I really liked the chorus (I don't think Xenomania can write a bad chorus). The whole thing reminds me of Franz Ferdinand a bit.

This will either be a massive hit or completely flop. Anyway, IMO it is the most original thing the Girls have done, so kudos for that.

daavid (daavid), Saturday, 8 October 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

This'll probably flop, but it'll flop in a blaze of glory!

iodine (iodine), Saturday, 8 October 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

I really need to hear a non-radio rip before I decide, but I sure liked this when I heard it last night. I was all set to write it off after it changed gears from stomping piano into Xenomania fireworxxx, but then the chorus kicked in and all critical trains of thought came to an abrupt end.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Sunday, 9 October 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

What I liked best is the half-spoken bits in the chorus, and the 'blues lick' at the start.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Does Louis Walsh still have overall control of the band? Because this (and "Long Hot Summer" for that matter) definitely have his sticky fingerprints all over them.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 10 October 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

does anyone have a copy of the actual lyrics
they seem quite amazing in places such as "i order cappuccino to go something something cause if i party anymore something something something" that part could be quite brilliant.

it would be nice if someone had a real ear and could understand them. if not i'll have to wait for the single

ollie, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

also, does anyone know what song they sample in the beginning cause i know that "bluesy" intro is a sample. i just can't figure out what it is.

ollie, Tuesday, 11 October 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

right. i can't download. someone send to the ginbox please until such time as i return to the internet.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

I thought you were avoiding radio rips, Lex!

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

The bluesy piano bit sounds a bit like a sped up I'm A Man by Muddy Waters.
Another ace Girls Aloud tune.

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

oh it's a radio rip? yeah, forget it then. by the time i get back on the internet a proper version will probably have leaked anyway.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

i absolutly love it its another fantastic single from the girls! sound of the underground, the show, love machine, wake me up , long hot summer and now biology are all going to go down in pop history !!

Gor, all it took was ONE listen from a CD rip and I am stupidly in love.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

i've, erm, sent you an email, lex.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I'd missed the "comes back to bite your behind" bit until now, somehow.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

Woo I have 'Biology' x lots, I love you all!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Are they really covering Dee C. Lee's "See the Day" for a Xmas single? Because on the one hand the original is ace and a good cover would just be unbelievably wonderful, but, on the other, if they I'll-Stand-By-You it up there will be hell to pay.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Jesus this is a good song. RX still takes the year, but jesus this is a good song. I still say the piano part rules the most.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

please can someone loverley please gmail it to meeee..?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

the clean clear version makes the song sound ten times better. its wonderful. i think the lyrics are clever and it is insanely catchy.

also brittle, i have to agree. girls aloud's producers need to learn that slow style ballads are so 1992-1996. and if they do i'll stand by you it up we should petition them to re-record it proper.

ollie, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

okay i have tried my best to transcribe these by ear since i could not find them on the internet. the brackets indicate that i'm not sure what goes in them but i put down my best guess.

Why don't you hold me squeeze me say you need without wicked games
Come on and hold me hug me say you love me and not my dirty brain
Why don't you hold me squeeze me say you need without wicked games
Come on and hold me hug me say you love me and not my dirty brain

I don’t want [Alabama] return
That will take me far away from you
Cause when you take me in your arms I turn to slave
I can’t be saved
So I got my cappuccino to go
And I’m heading for the hills again
Cause if we party anymore we’ll [stall] the fire of pure desire
Closer your mind’s flying blind
With your head and your face getting red and your heart beats closer
You fall on your knees and [you can’t] get your feet
Says you need and the beat gets closer
And you died for the thrill and the kill and your heart’s had its will
But it still creeps closer and you want it to freeze
But you’re weak and diseased and the beat and the beat gets closer…….

We give it up and then they take it away
A girl’s got to zip it up and get her head in the shade
Baby we give it up its just a matter of time
Before all the heavy stuff
Comes back to bite your behind

You can’t mistake my biology
The way that we talk the way that we walk its there in our thoughts
The magic numbers in front of me
The way that we talk the way we that we walk so easy to [coax]
You can’t mistake my biology
The way that we talk the way that we walk its there in our thoughts
We’re gonna [prophesize prophesy]
The way that we talk the way we that we walk so easy to [coax]

Why don't you hold me squeeze me say you need without wicked games
Come on and hold me hug me say you love me and not my dirty brain
Why don't you hold me squeeze me say you need without wicked games

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

can't hear the T in "return", really, and it does sound like "alabama" but I dunno

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

oh, "say you need me" not "say you need", in all of those, of course

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Top one. Nice one. Get sorted!

(/showing my age)

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

"The way that we TALK. The way that we WALK."

I agree that the above chorus is poptastic, but it takes its time getting to the good bits. Don't really understand who thought the first 30 seconds or so of pounding piano was a good intro to the song.

John Hunter, Thursday, 13 October 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

where did i thouhgt brits were supposed to have good diction and enunciation go to?

my lyrics are much better, save a couple of mistakes, I think

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 13 October 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Have never been a big fan of Girls Aloud till I heard this new track 'Biology' and saw the video on CD UK that goes with it and have to admit this is by far the best thing they have done, and is going to do really well.

Why ? Because it breaks a few rules ..... it's true that it sounds a bit like 3 diff songs spliced together but that it part of the genius of the song. I think you will find that a lot of people, like myself, that have never really been hooked on the girls and their music in the past will be hooked with this track.

The chorus, whether tou loveit or hate it, is as catchy as hell and one you cant get out of your head after you have heard it.

Only disappointment is the video. GREAT concept, girls look fantastic, love the whole idea, etc, etc ..... BUT .... the syncronisation is appauling, and sone of the editing is just not quite on the money !!! Whoever edited it needs shooting coz the look of video is brilliant and goes well with the song, as do the dance routines, etc, but one or two of them, who will remain nameless, need to loosen up and not appear so stiff or like they are getting instructions from the floor manager just out of line of sight on the sets.

Apart from that, this will be Top 3 and possibly even a Number one.

Watch this space !!!

Mudmaster, Sunday, 16 October 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

Good Song.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 16 October 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

and girls aloud dvd is called "girls on film " but their duran duran cover isn't on dvd because it wasn't a single.

retroboy, Sunday, 16 October 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Awesome. I don't mind the 3-songs-in-1 thing at all. In fact all my favourite bands tend to have this element to their records. More like this on the album plz!

Jeff W, Sunday, 16 October 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Will 'Biology' really be top 3? Plenty of people have said it'll kill their career as the kids just won't get it. I, however, LOVE it. Just watched the Home Truths show, someone give Cheryl and Ashley their own reality TV show asap as they are ADORABLE.

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 16 October 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Like all the best Girls aloud songs (No Good Advice, Sound of the Underground, Love Machine), Biology brings a cocaine-like warmness to my teeths. Guess it has something to do with the multi-layered ad-lib -and I hope there will be an extended version for this one.

snowballing (snowballing), Sunday, 16 October 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

The people complaining about the blues piano riff are dead fucking wrong. That's the best part by far, and while there's other good bits in there (and it's a pretty fine single), the rest is just so much pop gloss without anything to differentiate it.

js (honestengine), Sunday, 16 October 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

After listening to both singles on constant repeat for the past several days, I'm going to go against the grain and declare "Long Hot Summer" to be far superior to "Biology."

Has there ever been a better pop lyric than "I know you like to wear my dressing gown / when I'm not there / I guess you like it in my shoes / just 'cause you drive a Maserati / and the ladies stare / don't mean you'll go as fast as I do"

I don't think so.

John Hunter, Sunday, 16 October 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

wooooooow, choon.

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, it was on TOTP last night (along with the Sugababes video - HOW HOTTT WAS THAT?!?!?) and I'm stunned at how GA are going from strength to strength. How do they have the right to be that good? But they justify everything I've ever said about loving bubblegum and prefab music. Wow.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Monday, 17 October 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

We played it twice at Poptimism, hurrah! Not much dancefloor action but it sounded great, and it's early days yet.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 17 October 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

the transition between the second and third songs is fucking mental, like it's all been done with filters or something. both this and 'LHS' have a kind of late-90s mitsubishi rush feel to them, i think.

N_RQ, Monday, 17 October 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

This is totally Prog-pop!

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Monday, 17 October 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Have never been a big fan of Girls Aloud till I heard this new track 'Biology' and saw the video on CD UK that goes with it and have to admit this is by far the best thing they have done, and is going to do really well.

Seconded!!!

I'll go further and say I have previously found them unfailingly inane & actively, deeply boring. Seriously, they are only usually beaten at this 'making regular pop music hateful' by the goddess of meh - Ms. Stevens.

But this one has... a memorable tune! some restraint! is not embarrasingly oh-so-clever or cringeworthy on some other musical level. They actually sound like a proper 'girl group'* on this, and not something created in some dr. frankenstein's labratory of really-bad-meta-pop.

Yes, kudos to whoever's behind this one! They (GA) hardly have a great strike rate so far, but I cannot deny this one's goodness.

*Please don't read some wacked out ideas about what I sexistly think a 'girl group' is 'supposed' to be, or absurd limits I'm putting on the form. I'm just saying it's 5 girls, singing harmonies - about anything you like ok? As flexible as you want it to be, they've just *never* worked for me before.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

That said, it's still not massively remarkable imho.

and obviously pwn3d completely by Robyn.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen them in motion before, so im not sure if this is par for the course or not, but did anyone notice the choreography in the video looks as though it was done by grade schoolers? Its seriously giving me flashbacks to the dance routines girls would perform at the old talent shows. It's pretty adorable actually, particularly the bit when they launch into the first chorus.

jason., Monday, 17 October 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Joshua, Wednesday, 19 October 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, let me retract some. The dancing (in this video at least) = GREAT!

The song itself, now that I've heard it a few times... Okay, it's actually really f*cking annoying how it wanks about working it's way through, like, three separate song sections. I realise this is usual for them, but ffs! Is it supposed to be an insurance policy to stop fans crossing over to Rachel Stevens? Talk about covering all bases...

But enough. When they do stop faffing and get to the point, it's still - damn! I never expected them to thrill me even a little at this late stage, esp. as I've previously found them really cack-handed and/or just cack.

login name (fandango), Thursday, 20 October 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

...and it's the chorus that makes it. Sod the lyrics!

Where they've been lumpy, flat & very, very contrived before, this feels completely free. The hook/vocal/melody just breezes in from nowhere & gets it SO right it sounds like the easiest thing ever.

login name (fandango), Thursday, 20 October 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

once THAT chorus kicks in it's very similar to 5ive's ' keep on movin' '. Ot is rather catchy tho.

#6

:(

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

finally heard this. it's ok. i expect more of our girls though.

'the show' = three choruses welded together
'biology' = three bridges sellotaped together

also, irritating guitar jangle which is far too busy and far too fast

also, sounds a bit like franz ferdinand :(

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

the song is a bit.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

i think it's one of their best. i wouldn't read too much into the chart placing, the charts are basically meaningless now. it's better structured than 'the show'. i think i like them equally.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

A really good song, probably too smart for the masses. I didn't expect it to get into the top 5.

zeus (zeus), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

What's smart about it exactly? It's novel and catchy.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

i don't get this 'smart' thing either. sonically it's run-of-the-mill jangly guitars (please, girls, more of the insane headfuck electro sounds!). structurally they've done this no-chorus lark twice before (and much better both times) with 'the show' and 'graffiti my soul'.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

You all know how I feel about them, but frankly, this is a surprisingly good, less smug effort, a nice riff on the first Plus-Tech Squeeze Box album and a fine pop song (though the spoken 'chorus' action is irritating). Slightly longwinded - overall, login name's OTM up above.

Diametric opposition between Alex and I re: GA may explain why he doesn't like this ;-).

BARMS, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

also, sounds a bit like franz ferdinand :(

I just listened to this properly on headphones for the first time today, and that was my first reaction too!

It takes bloody ages to kick in, which makes it kinda tricky for the dancefloor, but I like it anyway, and its st(r)oppy-startyness is fun and disorientating.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

(though the spoken 'chorus' action is irritating)

haha you mean "the way that we talk! the way that we walk!" - that is the only bit of it i unreservedly love!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Tom, Lex: too much different choruses, and not one, huge, memorable one. It's not a superhit, I had to listen it a few times 'til it went my head. But since then I've been lovin' it.

finally heard this. it's ok. i expect more of our girls though.
'the show' = three choruses welded together
'biology' = three bridges sellotaped together

also, irritating guitar jangle which is far too busy and far too fast

also, sounds a bit like franz ferdinand :(

-- The Lex (alex.macpherso...), November 16th, 2005.
it sounds more like gaffer tape than sellotape.

retrogurl, Thursday, 17 November 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

sonically it's run-of-the-mill jangly guitars

have you heard it thru cans? it sounds a bit flat on tv, but there's a lot more going on with the production than that.

OTM - headphones are key!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 17 November 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

i've only heard it through headphones so far

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 November 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

i dunno where you get this 'jangly guitars' idea from then.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 17 November 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

because there are lots of them, and they are busy, and are played out of sync with everything else in the song?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 17 November 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

i don't know what ur talking about!

it's not exactly 'mr tambourine man'.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 17 November 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

the mp3, i admit, does not appear to be the best possible quality. but it is the same one which was posted at the start of the thread!

That, and the more I think about it, the more I suspect Brian read Andy Shortwave Set's interview with Jerry T' Nipper and read it's major points very closely indeed. This is all in relation to the suprising fact that I like this, of course.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I really like the guitars in "Biology" (though there's not actually an awful lot of them - less than in "Long Hot Summer" and certainly less than "Love Machine"). It doesn't make me think of Franz Ferdinand, but the opening bit definitely seems like a cheeky nod to White Stripes/other bluesy garage rock bands.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 17 November 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I get the Franz Ferdinand vibe too. Specifically the bluesy part of 'Biology' reminds me of the second part of 'Take Me Out'. And of course the fact that they're both 2 (or more songs) glued together.

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 17 November 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

The opening is a really obvious nod to White Stripes, even Nadine's singing sounds like made on purpose...

Anyone else tried listening to this and Sugababes' 'Ace Reject' back to back?

No, why?

daavid (daavid), Friday, 18 November 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

It just seems natural as they're both signature Xeno breezy poppets. Tho' 'Red Dress' far and away remains the best thing they've done since 'Love Machine'.

Incidentally, if I'm comparing 'Biology' to any Japanese pop song, it should definitely be Kahimi Karie's 'Le Roi Soleil' (produced by Cornelius and written by Momus, obv.), which it is actually very similar to in execution and basic elements (blues piano excepted).

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 18 November 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

haha.

i listened to this again and the sound which irritated me wasn't a jangly guitar, it was the really awful drums which go at a completely different tempo to the rest of the song which i just heard as acoustic guitars because the mp3 is so shoddy.

there is still nothing about the arrangement which is right, apart from the piano which is buried anyway.

it sounds like a chaz church demo.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

"the mp3 is so shoddy"

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

I think the other thing about 'Le Roi Soleil' and 'Biology' is that they may both secretly be Sparks songs (that Sparks didn't write, of course).

BARMS, Friday, 18 November 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

the mp3 isn't that shoddy, and it's the one posted at the start of this thread which seemed to bowl everyone else over, but it's...tinny.

barima, do you like 'bruised'? that is my favourite new sugababes song (you are right about the greatness of 'red dress' though)

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

they're annoying brushed drums. they don't sound like drums.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 18 November 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

barima, do you like 'bruised'? that is my favourite new sugababes song.

It's very good ("In the war with you!"), but you know how much I heart Mutya and the other two anyway (watched 'em on Frank Skinner last night and decided I could also be persuaded to switch to the Keisha side some day). I revived the Taller thread just to reiterate how much I love the album - I've given every song the highest rating on iTunes, just as I have for One Touch.

My 'Biology' mp3 isn't hi-quality either, but I feel it's nice to give a damn about GA once in a while - I have enough stress on without venting it at pop singers. I think, Alex et al, that you should find that Kahimi Karie song, not least 'cause I think it's yet another example of Higgins' secret Cornelius fandom we're seeing here.

BARMS, Friday, 18 November 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

but i never liked cornelius :(

i think the only misstep on the sugababes album is the cover of 'obsession', oh and i can't remember anything about 'better'.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

"Better": Oooh ooh ooh oooh oooh! It's ace.

I think the one misstep on Taller is actually "It Ain't Easy," which I find rather annoying.

(Thread derailment alert!)

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

b-b-b-but PERSONAL JESUS RIP-OFF!

"it ain't easy being my own personal jesus" => sugababes as ego-driven monsters of highest order (esp mutya) => awesome.

Yes, but I don't especially like "Personal Jesus" either -- the tune is really very monotonous when you get down to it.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

But he doesn't even sing on it. You'd probably like his less indie-based mid 90s pop more than what you've heard - actually, what have you heard?

BARMS, Friday, 18 November 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

"there is still nothing about the arrangement which is right"

Their arrangements are always a right mess! How does this usually go unmentioned? Meh. I do know better than to post on these threads really, I suppose I just want to make it clear that when the backlash finally comes, I always thought they were mostly rubbish.

Hopefully Nadine's solo career (will it ever arrive?) will make the dreary Rachbot Stevens redundant though.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 18 November 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

nadine is the least essential girl aloud! she is the 'singer' ie the mel c. cheryl, on the other hand, is iconic.

yeah, some of their arrangements have been messy before; it's when they're sleek and shiny that they're best ('the show', 'graffiti my soul') because it magnifies the girls' brash karaoke piss-up voices.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 18 November 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Nadine's awful. Alex, where's my reply?

BARMS, Friday, 18 November 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh come on! Even my MUM notices how bad the others look next to her. The others look more moronic than iconic, especially the boz-eyed ginger one!

Perhaps this is the repressed FHM male in me but I'd just really like to see a genuinely flaming HOT pop star coming from the UK for a change. Sure Nadine airbrushes well, but she's also got something ballsy about her? Is that just me? She doesn't come across icky-feminine-wiles-user (Britney, Jessica, the list is endless) nor is she happily cold & cruel seeming (Rachel... I'm sure there are more examples). Gah. Maybe I should write her a song :)

the girls' brash karaoke piss-up voices Truly they are the heirs to the Spice crown! Aww... I'm such a sour piss about this aren't I? Okay, maybe I just don't get it/enjoy it/not my thing :( I'll stop whining if I can. I just find them so bafflingly hard to really like.

http://www.propaganda.co.uk/i-news/v/ga-nadine.jpg
(and she's the one I DO fancy... I have to look twice to be certain if it's even her in that one!)

I maybe haven't paid close enough attention to her voice, if it's even possible (can't think now if I've seen them not miming or not...) well, she gives off the illusion of being the best anyway. I must have got this idea from somewhere.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Well spotted.

Rachel's voice is a tool, or a component to be utilised for gain or even just to have its own limitations sidestepped within her songs.. Nadine's is more like a weapon - it's alternatively bludgeoning and sharp and does absolutely nothing for me.

I'm liking this more with every listen, it's addictive. My favourite part of it is the shimmering synth on the chorus(es). It's buried beneath so many layers (vocals, brushed drums, bassline) that is barely noticeable, yet it provides the harmonic backbone that makes the chorus so catchy.

daavid (daavid), Sunday, 20 November 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Even though this song is one of my favorite singles of the year, it has what is without question the lamest attempt to alter the pronunciation of a word in order to make it rhyme that I've ever heard (worse than "...you and I should get along so aw-ful-LY" even!). Yep, right there in the chorus they try their hardest to make "controversy" somehow rhyme with "biology" and "in front of me", but it JUST DOESN'T WORK!!

Unless of course this is a British thing and that's actually how they pronounce the word over there in which case forget everything I just said and then some.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 21 November 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

I didn't really think it sounded much like Biology

I didn't really mean to imply it should, but both are electro-inflected Sparksian dreampop-rock numbers that are practically in the same tempo. They don't sound very alike, but you can swap lyrics over and call 'em remixes (in my head anyway).

I'm not even going for comparisons, they've just both become intertwined in my mind.

Finally managed to pick up a copy of the "bumper fan pack" CD single of "Biology" here in the hinterlands of the U.S. of A. I skipped the ringtones, karaoke mix, video game, and bonus Girls Aloud Linux installation for your Mac or PC, and watched the video, which, as someone upthread noted, features some of the worst, most out-of-sync "dancing" from a manufactured pop group that I have ever seen. I'm a little surprised that the Girls, who have otherwise achieved pop perfection, have failed to master this most basic of girl-group skills. Still love 'em though - their klutziness on the dance floor is sort of endearing.
