"Sunshine Reggae" was SUCH a huge holiday hit 1983 that it even inspired a spin-off movie, Sunshine Reggae auf Ibiza, probably slung together in two weeks flat, featuring all your top bangin' Ibiza choons such as Ryan Paris "La Dolce Vita" etc.

Laibach missed the boat with that one, I reckon.

On the flip, Mtume's Juicy Fruit album is completely underrated. That entire album is great.

hey-it was stirmonster who has the We Want Prince 12", I'd never heard about it and was just joking about how ballsy it is to name a song after an influence like that! I knew Lynn Tolliver was involved because another member of this community, Lauren, found that out somehow, and being from Cleveland, was familiar with him as a Cleveland radio personality of some sort? Had no idea he was behind a Black Eyed Peas song though!

And I know I Need a Freak is classic, but I'm still all about If I Gave You A Party.

The group began with Lourdes Figueroa (A latina hottie who later became Mrs. Lynn Tolliver) and Myself. We later became a multi-ethnic band with a little something for everybody. Sexy, Hot and Horney - Good concept..It worked!

I have a couple of the origional radio commericals that aired back then. The audio quality is very poor because they were recorded on cassette tape. I'll try to clean them up and provide a link.

When I was tying to find a connection between the Black Eyed Peas "My Humps" and "I Need A Freak" I came across all of these links referencing our band.
I was so suprised and excited. Lynn Tolliver now works for Hot 105.7 FM WHJX in Florida as the Program Director.

I did hear preview of "I Need a Freak" on Andrew Wetherall's Fabric 19 CD. I Like the way it mixes into The Egyptian Lover – Freak-A-Holic track. I fact I e-mailed Andrew thru the Haywire website (www.haywire.co.uk)last nite. He didn't seem to have a site of his own. I also like the "If I Gave you a Party" remix by Syrup. The only other "I Need A Freak" remix release that I knew of was by rapper Too Short awhile back. To be honest with you I don't belive that Lynn is aware of all the remixes either.

there have been a few covers of 'i need a freak'. this one is a bootleg that adds new drums and extends it. there's at least another two cover versions of it apart from the one by too short but the artists names escape me just now.

copies of this pressing turned up in the shops recently.

It definitely is exciting, just in a different way. My issue with it is that the classic-to-dud ratio seems to be just a little lower than the first installment (I mean really, Barry Waite?).

That thing never gets old.

I remember when that song came out and my friends and I were scared out of our wits.

I remember, in fourth grade, a kid in our class brought the 12" of this in for show and tell. The teacher let him play it on the class turntable, but I don't think we even made it halfway through before it getting yanked for being "inappropriate". I'm not sure that I've heard it more than twice since then.

Was it the drugs part or the "rich / bitch" that was so incriminating?

Fly Away/Walking In The Sunshine's first few seconds are also v nice

it was probably how unbelievably nasty the beat is - there's something obviously inappropriate about the song from the very beginning

The teacher was growing more and more uncomfortable as the song played, but yeah, I think it was the "bitch" that finally pushed it over the edge.

The blasts of distorted guitar/synth-thing in "White Horse" are quite underrated and unique. One of the more underrated passages of the song is that one time the distorted guitars hit a drone and sustain for several bars early on in the song, and let the weird flute melody putter on over it.

Then in a weird tempo change, the distorted guitar/synth-thing releases, and "IF YOU WANNA RIIIDE".

Extremely subtle, beautiful, different. Even moreso than the rare accented 7-beat counts in Blondie's "Heart Of Glass" bridge -- which is also brilliant.

i would write a 45 RPM series book on "White Horse"

all djs are aware of that little hurdle, as well as the hurdle near the end when everything drops out besides a percussive "BAH-BSSH BA-BSSSH BA-BSSSH BA-BSSSH" which if you've already starting mixing a track in will fuck yo shit right up

The 12" version has another such hurdled in an extended "BAH-BSSH BA-BSSSH BA-BSSSH BA-BSSSH" part that's not on the 4-beat before going back to the "RICH?... you bitch" refrain.

AH, we were talking about the same thing, never mind. Yeah, the song ends in a single cold BAH-BSSH too, but at that point, the quick fade-in will have to do.

Danish duo Laid Back -- responsible for the massive, underground dance track "White Horse" that crossed over onto the American pop charts in 1983 -- have announced the forthcoming release of Cosyland on May 22nd, a collection of reworked old tracks, and lost recordings from the famed sessions that put them on the map.

But, of course, there's more to the Laid Back story. Back in the seventies, Tim Stahl and John Guldberg met in a band called The Starbox Band and soon found out that there was a special chemistry between them. They were always the ones left that kept on jamming when band rehearsals ended. After a disaster of a support gig for The Kinks in Copenhagen, people walked out on them... and the band split up. New technology then came: multi-track tape recorders, rhythm boxes and synthesizers, etc. In a backyard downtown Copenhagen, John had set up a small studio where they began jamming together and creating tape recordings. They soon realized that they had created a new sound, a new way of making music. The debut album Laid Back contained their first #1 hit “Maybe I'm Crazy,” and was released in 1981. The next single, “Sunshine Reggae”, was the summer hit of 1982 in Denmark. In the USA, the focus was however on another song, “White Horse”, which became a #1 Dance track and trendsetter with an influence that is still felt today. When their US record company told them “don't come, people think you are black”, Tim and John saw it as the biggest acknowledgement a musician could ever get and stayed away... and now today, “White Horse” is known for being a benchmark cornerstone of the electronic music-making in the Eighties, having been sampled over and over again and becoming a true classic.

Absolute rarities are unearthed on Cosyland, taken from original multi-track archive tapes. Recordings at the source of it all were done in 1981 with brand-new equipment such as a Roland TR-808 rhythm box, a SH-101, a Pro-One monophonic synthesizer and a GR-500 guitar controller-and-synth. Relevant tapes copied from analogue to digital have just an added drumbeat, bass and vocal ahead of mixes. All recordings were improvised for their own pleasure while experimenting with a new technology. Besides, they were mere newcomers and beginners in this context, not knowing to later end up defining a new type of trademark sound. It is something of an archaeology excavation trip, so welcome aboard on a journey to Cosyland.

"White Horse" wasn't much of a hit outside the U.S.. "Bakerman" I first heard on Dom Joly's vanity album, but until now I'd never seen the video... it's fantastic. In five minutes, Lars von Trier makes up for his entire film career.
