OFFICIAL ILM 2005 POLL You know you want to...

Message Bookmarked

As it's nearly end of November and no-one else has stepped up to the plate, and I want to find out how of sync I am from the rest of ILM I'll organise this years review of the year just gone type poll. There will be two polls, one for albums and one for songs.

ELIGIBILITY:

Albums:

Album elligibility will be treated very leniently--albums from late last year that didn't get their due until this year, or weren't released in your country until this year, or have leaked but won't be technically released until later this year, will all count. That includes Arcade Fire which wasn't released in UK until February, upcoming Girls Aloud etc

Compilations and DJ mixes will be eligible as will any reissues which differ significantly from the original issue e.g Cure reissues.

Songs:

If a song appeared for the first time this year on any format (a/b-side, album track, comp track), it is eligible. If it was released on an album last year but not as a single until this year, it is eligible. If it was released as a single last year but did not chart in your home country until this year, it is eligible. A song is not eligible, however, if it appeared on a compilation for the first time this year but was already available previously. If you are voting for a remix it will be marked separately from any other version e.g Franz Ferdinand's Do you want to will be marked separately from the Max Tundra mix, Errol Alkan mix etc...

Votes/Scoring:

You'll be voting for a maximum of 20 albums and 20 songs. The scoring will be :

#1--20 points
#2--19 points
#3--18 points
#4--17 points
#5--16 points
...
#10--11 points
...
#20--1 point

Lists must be of no more than 20, any more will be ignored. Unordered lists will get 10.5 points each.

BLURBS:

I'd like to get a substantial number of blurbs for this, even if not every album is covered--I think it'd be a lot more enjoyable to read or whatever. So what I'd like you all to do is that when you vote, put a star or something next to albums you'd be willing to write a small blurb for (or a large one, if you feel like getting all deep). If you're cool with writing a blurb for anything, you godlike human being, just make a note of that somewhere. If you don't want to write blurbs, then that's fine, your list won't count for less or anything. Then, after the list is tabulated, I'll ask the people who volunteered to write blurbs about albums that made the list. They'll have a week to do so.

DEADLINES:

Deadline for lists: December 31
Deadline for blurbs: January 5

That's more than a month to put your list together, I think that's enough time. If you all need more time, I can give you some, but not too much lest the list run into the new year. I'll try to get the poll running just after the new year.

IN THIS THREAD:

I'd appreciate it if people didn't post their lists in this, or any other thread. If people disagree with me than OK, but I think that the exit polling that took place with the 90s polls sorta killed some of the mystery about the poll, and I think it'd be better going in without knowing exactly what everyone voted for.

However, what I do encourage in this thread, is some serious pimping. Three weeks is a long time, and I know that I at least would love some suggestions of albums or songs that I might have missed that I can download before sending in my list. Don't post too many as to not overwhelm people with suggestions, but if there are a couple songs, comps or albums that people feel have gone underrecognized, then by all means, recommend away -- bonus points for Yousendit links!

Also in this thread, if you have any questions regarding eligibility or any suggestions regarding eligibility or voting, I'd be happy to take them.

Thanks to the Good Dr Bill who's 2004 guidance I've pinched and amended.

hurray!!!

so - no nominations, we just send our lists straight to you?

hurray!!!

(my lists will be very short, due to not having bought very much)

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

straight to voting, nominations stage not needed.

last year in total over 450 albums got at least 1 vote. that is the reality of the fragmentation of modern music culture[s].

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I'll ever understand why, given their mania over decade lists, the ILM response to year-end lists is so muted. Is it the lack of the nomination process? The already over-saturing inundation of year-end lists from other sources? One year not as much fun as 10?

strange.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

I think it's that we haven't had time to digest the year fully. A lot of the stuff I listened to in the first few months of this year was stuff recommended in various best of 2004 polls. I vote in most of these polls, but I didn't vote in the best of 2004 one. I'll try and make the effort this year.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah I only heard of 95% of last year's "best" from the 2004 ILM poll(good one btw, keep it up, other guy) and I'm not alone!

tremendous (tremendoid), Thursday, 1 December 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

I think we should have a best of 2005 poll at the end of 2006.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I really don't think that answers it, though.

GDB -- do you think maybe it's because lots of ILXors are already putting together lists for other sites/publications?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

(So, I mean, it all just seems a bit redundant...?)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 1 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

well, yeah, I meant that included with the over-saturation of year-end lists.

I never really understood that, though, since if anything already having a year-end list prepared for another source should make it easier to vote in this since it just takes a simple C&P.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I just sent my 20 singles/tracks. As usual I am not bothering with albums as I haven't heard enough.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Did you get my list?

It baffles me how people have such reluctance to make lists. Then again I'm a loser who spends the entire year compiling the songs and records I really love and pruning it so by like November I'm good to go when editors and ILM come calling for a top 20 or a top 25 ot a top 10.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 1 December 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

I am still making up my list, because I am still hearing albums I might want to include! New Anthony Hamilton won't be out until the 13th, etc.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 1 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Raymond, yes. Are you doing a tracks list or just albums?

I think there may be a reluctance to enter this because when it's compared to NME/Q/insert publication it may not be as 'special' as you imagine an ILM list to be.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 1 December 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Forgot to send the singles list, will get on that right now...

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 5 December 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Is Rex The Dog - Prototype eligible? I think it first came out in 2004, but I think it's been re-released recently. I can't get the search function to work, so I can't check if it was in last year's poll.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 5 December 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Rex The Dog - Prototype was #53 in last years poll.

If you're not sure if it's eligible check out last years ILM Top tracks of 2004.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 5 December 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Looking at the 2004 list I see Tiga - Pleasure From The Bass came 452nd. :(

Despite readin through the rules, I'm still a bit confused. The MIA album was this year, wasn't it? So I could vote for any track off Arular, including Galang, even though that came third last year when it was a single?

Also, there are very few albums that I would want to vote for, and the difference between how much I like my first choice and how much I like my third choice is massive - could I, for example, put nothing in third to fifteenth places, and then chose a sixteenth place (so that my third choice only gets 5 points instead of 18), or would that be a bit mental?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I think the crucial bit is If a song appeared for the first time this year on any format (a/b-side, album track, comp track), it is eligible, so Galang wouldn't be eligible but most of the other tracks from Arular would be.

As for leaving a big gap between your choices, yes that would be mental, but if you want to do it that way, that's your choice.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 5 December 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

i stand by what i said about my album of the year way back in february. mrs fiendish's hat is safe.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 5 December 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 5 December 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

my problem here is that 15 songs on my "songs" list could just be, er, the tracks off my #1 album. and probably should be.

hey ho. see, already i feel i'm not being true to myself. THAT'S why i never do these things. i remember now :)

i think my lists will be among the last to arrive with you, billy.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

However, what I do encourage in this thread, is some serious pimping. Three weeks is a long time, and I know that I at least would love some suggestions of albums or songs that I might have missed that I can download before sending in my list. Don't post too many as to not overwhelm people with suggestions, but if there are a couple songs, comps or albums that people feel have gone underrecognized, then by all means, recommend away -- bonus points for Yousendit links!

-- Billy Dods

This is exactly how I feel and came up with a similar idea. Always around the beginning of December I almost only play stuff from that calendar year, hopefully just to make the most actuate list that I can but always still miss stuff.

So this year I'm doing 'Year In Review' on my other music message board that I post at. These albums aren't obscure records or the more popular ones from 2005. These are albums that might get overlooked unless you remember to play them again for list making time or (my real hope) convince someone to seek out new music before the end of the year. I make my initial post with a blurb from somewhere else and then the members of the board weigh in with their thoughts of that album. Seems to be working, for instance M83 was today’s topic (rather weak response to this one), with members liking it but haven't played it in ages and will revisit. Not going to try and incorporate that idea on this ILM thread but thought it was strange that we had a similar idea.

Since this is also the links thread (our 'Best Album Of' threads are kicking some major ass): http://www.obner.org/bb/

Obner's 2005 results are not due until January 15, which is perfect for me because I never have it done by the end of the year. Always need an extra sometimes two week to finalize my list and since I don't have a deadline the end of December doesn't really mean anything for finalizing that years music. I will get this off to you on time but my official list will probably have some slight modifications.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

First week update. Albums; 8 lists and 130 albums nominated so far, 3 out in front at the moment. Tracks; Only 5 lists and 90 tracks nominated, nothing staking an early lead at the moment.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

billy, could you throw my lists out that i sent you the other day? i still need to listen to a bunch of stuff that could make my list and that might get pimped on this thread like magick markers, sugababes, tiefschwarz, ttc, a-frames, etc.

also sinlgles/songs recommendations anyone?

jmeister (jmeister), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

No problem, I thought it was odd that you had James Blunt and Coldplay at 1 and 2 in both your lists.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

what's up with Since U Been Gone at #473 last year? there is NO DOUBT it'll be in my top 5 somewhere (assuming it's eligible).

Jimmy_tango, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

i didnt have james blunt and coldplay on there...or is that a joke?

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

does anyone want to pimp any experimental electronic stuff from this year. ill probably get around to the new jan jelinek but any other stuff would be great.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

jmeister -- the last minute discovery that's making me revise *my* list for this poll is Alog, Miniatures. You can listen to a few tracks here: http://alog.net/discography#miniatures

Sincerely, (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Billy, I just emailed you my revised list. Alog (and a few others) added, James Blunt and Coldplay removed.

Sincerely, (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

thanks paul, ill be sure to listen to that one. i just listened to multiples by keith fullerton whitman and that is definitely crashing my top 20.

ill pimp a few tracks and albums now.
tracks: amerie "one thing" siik mix, royksopp "what else is there" (thin white duke mix), mariah carey "we belong together", daft punk technologic (BJaxx Mix), Youngbloodz "Presidential Shit, Girls Aloud "Waiting" and "Watch Me Go", Kelley Polar - "tyrangulila", The Chap "Auto Where To", Jackson "Utopia, Animal Collective "Banshee Beat"...

albums: Teh Chap - Ham, Roisin Murphy - Ruby Blue, DJ Muggs v. GZA - Grandmasters, Andrew Bird - Mysterious Production of Eggs, Prefuse 73 Reads The Books

if anyone wants any of those tracks id be happy to ysi them if ive still got them on my hard drive.

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Billy, here's some serious pimping: Here is a list of album tracks that were not singles (as far as I know) that are worth listening to and maybe voting for:

Fannypack "Seven One Eight"
Ashlee Simpson "I Am Me"
M.I.A. "Bingo"
Living Things "March in Daylight"
Fannypack f. Mr. Vegas "Fire Fire"
Gore Gore Girls "All Grown Up"
L.C.D. Soundsystem "Movement"
Bobby Bare "Are You Sincere?"
Gene Watson "You Could Know as Much"
Gary Allan "Tough All Over"
Jamie O'Neal "Devil on the Left"
The Mighty Jeremiahs "John the Revelator"
Marion Raven "Break You"
Shooter Jennings "Daddy's Farm"
Lee Ann Womack "There's More Where that Came From"
The Kentucky Headhunters "I'm Down"
Brie Larson "Life After You"

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

(And I consider "Bingo" eligible because the version from last year was (1) a different version, and (2) only available on a boot. Also, it doesn't really matter if people follow elgibility rules or not, since something that didn't make much of an impact this year isn't going to get many votes anyway.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

"Since U Been Gone" is eligible. I have no idea if it first charted in, say, November or December of 2004, but given that it was top ten from maybe January through June 2005, it's eligible. (Otherwise, this poll won't represent what 2005 was like.) Also, for what it's worth, "Galang" is eligible because it got its first release as a single/focus track in the USA in 2005. Yup! (But I'm not going to vote for it because I voted for it last year, and in my mind it belongs to last year.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Playing out of people's cars on big systems on Green Lanes track of the year: Has to be Amerie 1 Thing (or maybe Gasolina - which only came out this year in the uk).

I just heard this for the first (and second, and third...) time last night and I think it'sthe best thing evah track of the year: Hell - Follow You (Dominik Eulberg Mix). Wow.

Doom-laden vocal track of the year: Lopazz Blood (released Dec 04 is that allowed?)

Why wasn't I at G.A.Y. on Saturday night I just saw the photos in the Sun album of the year: Girls Aloud.

Actually, I haven't listened to many albums this year beyond the obvious ones, so get "pimping".

ps LCD -Movement came out as a single too early in 2004 to qualify, I reckon.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

I didn't even know "Movement" had been a single. Shows how with it I am!

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Great track, though.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah it is. In fact I'm going to vote for it anyway, even though I both know it to come from 2004.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Marion Raven's "Break You" was a single, too (from this year, so eligible, and maybe eligible next year as well if it ever gets a U.S. release).

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

le bump (voted)

login name (fandango), Saturday, 10 December 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Bump again. Just added the latest votes. One clear leader in the albums with a chasing pack of around 6 or 7 not too far behind. Still lacking in lists for the tracks (only 7) but there are about 3 vying for the top spot.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 11 December 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

i was going to put my lists together today.

i didn't.

i sincerely hope other people will be voting for boom bip's "blue eyed in the red room" and hood's "outside closer".

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 11 December 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone mentioned "My Mathematical Mind" yet? It's the best song on the Spoon album, and since we're not constrained by single releases, I think you fuxors should seriously consider it.

regular roundups (Dave M), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I am sending my votes through. This is the first time I have voted in the three/four years I have been on ILM!

I encourage everybody else to do the same.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 December 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to know a few things ... is Gnarls Barkley 's "Crazy" eligible? As far as I know it only exists as an MP3, but I maybe wrong. Also, what about a song like Bumblebee Unlimited's "Ladybug" on Annie's DJ Kicks.. I mean, it probably went unnoticed when it came out (actually, when has it first come out?), so is it ok to vote for it 'cos it's now becoming known? If yes, please vote for it everybody.

Thx for answering this drink-induced post (and please forgive me for all typos, nonsense etc)

Jibé (Jibé), Saturday, 17 December 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

If they first came out this year, then yes they'd be eligible. One exception is any albums which have leaked and I'm thinking specifically of Belle and Sebastian's Life Pursuit, which isn't supposed to be out until next February,. As it happens no-one's voted for it yet.

Still looking for more lists, keep em' coming folks. Without giving too much away, some ILM touchstones are notable by their absence or lack of support.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 17 December 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 17 December 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Two weeks to go!

Album poll is shaping up nicely. One clear, but not unassailiable, leader with a number of albums vying for second place.

Tracks are starting to shape up but vote splitting is going to have a marked effect on some acts. One act has 5 tracks voted for but isn't likely to make top 50 at the moment. Another act has 3 mixes of the same track and isn't going to make top 50 either at the moment. So think carefully about what you choose.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 19 December 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that lcd soundsystem's "yr city's a sucker" was released as a single this year...

petesmith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

the real issue is: do we vote in a vacuum for what we really think was best or do we get political?

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Considering there isn't a nominations list (unlike some of the other ILM polls), I think there is less to be gained by voting strategically/politically because you can already vote for anything you want instead of being forced to pick from a list that was almost entirely made up of other people's nominations.

Ideally, it's always best to vote for your actual favourites. I have always done that in polls without nominations -- with noms, it's a totally different story.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

If I vote for my actual top 20 tracks about half of them will come from my three favourite albums, so maybe I should limit myself to one per artist to get more variety in there.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

Billy, can we just spread out the 210 points between the albums & singles we choose as we see fit (as long as our rankings still reflect our point valuations top to bottom). I feel like this would allow us to vote for our true choices while still allowing some of our lesser favorites shots at actually making it.

regular roundups (Dave M), Tuesday, 20 December 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I'd nearly sorted out my top 20, but when I double-checked with the 2004 results I found that Helicopter (Bloc Party) was in the lower reaches of the chart. But the rules say:

"If a song appeared for the first time this year on any format (a/b-side, album track, comp track), it is eligible. If it was released on an album last year but not as a single until this year, it is eligible. If it was released as a single last year but did not chart in your home country until this year, it is eligible."

Surely this means that if something was released as a single last year, but appeared on an album for the first time this year then I can vote for it. Same thing with Galang, as I asked upthread.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Billy, can we just spread out the 210 points between the albums & singles we choose as we see fit (as long as our rankings still reflect our point valuations top to bottom). I feel like this would allow us to vote for our true choices while still allowing some of our lesser favorites shots at actually making it.

I can see the merit of that system but as I've received a little over 20 lists it would be a little unfair on those who've already voted. So I'd prefer it if you stuck to the 20-1 system. You'll just have to think more carefully about how you vote.

As for the second post, I'm not going to police the choices too rigorously. Howvere if it polled last year I'd suggest you'd probably be wasting your vote as it'll be unlikely to garner the support it had from last year.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind wasting my vote. I'm happy to leave out Galang as it polled so highly last year, but I'll keep Helicopter as it wasn't even in the top 100.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Right, done it.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

My albums ballot is here.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 23 December 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I'd just like to remind everybody that "Cosmos (Outer Space)" is the best song on the t.A.T.u. album, and that I hate the Madonna album.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 24 December 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

and that Chucks says that Lindsay Lohan does "I Want You To Want Me" better than Cheap Trick ever did.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 24 December 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Whoa! Alert! Alert! The Ghostface/Trife CD that came out in October or so is INCREDIBLE. It's called Put It On The Line and is just... well, please remember it, and I have no problem rapidsharing or YSI-ing the entire album if anyone wants.

regular roundups (Dave M), Saturday, 24 December 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to hear it - I didn't even know it was out, I'm embarrassed to say.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 December 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

Also, please do not forget the Modeselektor album.

Jibé (Jibé), Saturday, 24 December 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

the meshuggah album is MUCH better than i remembered. MUCH better.

lists coming soon, billy.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 24 December 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

BUMP... Just over ONE week to go. I'm going to be away from my pc for a few days to eat and drink lots of rich and unhealthy food. I'll be getting in touch with those kind souls who've offered to pen a few words next week when I'll have a better idea who's going to make the cut.

FWIW nearly 300 albums and 330 tracks have been voted for. Both albums and tracks polls are still wide open, though there is one album which has picked up a lot of support in the past few days. Some acts (and tracks) in the tracks poll are going to miss out big style through vote splitting.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 24 December 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Billy, I'm gonna want/offer to write some blurbs when I send my lists. Just to let you know.

regular roundups (Dave M), Saturday, 24 December 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Alright, here's the Ghostface/Trife for Martin and the rest of those interested, which should be everyone.

regular roundups (Dave M), Saturday, 24 December 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

I hope a zip file is okay.

regular roundups (Dave M), Saturday, 24 December 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Thanks - actually you inspired me to get searching on slsk, so I have already DLed it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 December 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

awesome, let me know if you want to double up on some song voting. I particularly like "project soap operas". just email me (it's gmail, not g(amma)mail, of course).

regular roundups (Dave M), Saturday, 24 December 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

haha, I thoroughly disapprove of such conspiracies in voting. This may be mainly because I don't know that I have the motivation to vote, and even if I do I don't actually care about the results.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 December 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, well the offer still stands for anyone else who is down with the conspiracy. Really, though, this might be totally wasted on the ILX crowd, but please don't forget My Morning Jacket either! "Off the Record" was the single, Z was the album.

regular roundups (Dave M), Sunday, 25 December 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

remember to vote for the smog album. i know you want to.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 25 December 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

remember to vote for MIA!

deej.. (deej..), Sunday, 25 December 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

just kidding.

deej.. (deej..), Sunday, 25 December 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

whew! that was a close one, deej.

regular roundups (Dave M), Sunday, 25 December 2005 05:28 (twenty years ago)

I am a v. influential ilmer.

deej.. (deej..), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

hahahahaha, nice.

regular roundups (Dave M), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

You are to me. At least if I get all those jazz albums I put on my Christmas list.

regular roundups (Dave M), Sunday, 25 December 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

Bumpity bump. A little over THREE days to go. Currently a little over 360 albums and 410 tracks voted for.

I'll be emailing those kind souls who've volunteered to say a few words and will probably contact a few others who haven't volunteered in the next day or two.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

don't think you should consider extending the deadline it you get less that 50 or ballots?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

fuck extending the deadline! i've just spent the last hour putting my lists together, because it's the last chance i'm going to get before the 31st. i could have been doing something more edifying, like eating a pie or having a wank, goddamit!

i have to say, my lists are a bit odd: almost exactly what you'd expect from a 30-year-old erstwhile indie kid and synthpop fetishist with a love of anthemic rock, except with a touch of grinding prog-metal and some, er, "post-folk".

anyway. e-mail sent. 'rah. now for that wank pie.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

don't forget ELECTRELANE and SAINT ETIENNE and OOIOO and SUNNO))) and EDITH FROST and AFRIRAMPO and DMBQ and THE HOWLING HEX

gear (gear), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

I want to stick to the deadline as the poll's been running over a month and it should be time enough for people to make their choices, plus the danger is if I were to extend it by a week say, people would then be wanting to delay it even further. Having said that as it's holiday season I'm not going to be a hard ass if a few votes come in on the first or even second of Jan.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't put mine in any coherent order, so it went in un-numbered.

waldo jeffers scenario (haitch), Thursday, 29 December 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 29 December 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

bump... and sending

jed_ (jed), Friday, 30 December 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

BUMP. A little over a day and bit to go, keep 'em coming.

Grimly, what's yr email address as I haven't received anything from the simonmail~btinternet address?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 30 December 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

And am I really the only person who cares for the Brian Eno album?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Billy, did you get my list?

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

billy: it would have come from s i m o n dot s t u a r t at gmail etc, and had "grimly fiendish" in the subject line. i'll re-send again from the BTi address too. (why? i dunno. i just will.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Simon, got yr list ok this time. Regular roundups, yes all ok, I'll get back to you shortly about your offer to write something.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

'rah, top etc.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 30 December 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Just voted.
And duly just forgot MIA. Oh well, I'm happy to let the votes stand.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 30 December 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Cool. xxpost

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE. i am really freaked out about the splitting between remixes and album tracks and such. i wish the rules had been singles only to avoid that. that said, VOTE FOR THE JACQUES LU CONT MIX OF "LOSE CONTROL"

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Saturday, 31 December 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

will do.

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 31 December 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

did you get my ballot billy?

jmeister (jmeister), Saturday, 31 December 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

While your valet or maid is dusting down your tux or party frock and before you decide whether Breitling or Rolex is best to count down to the new year now's the time to make your mind up as to your top 20 albums and tracks of 2005.

As I may be a little hungover tomorrow, and indeed the next day I won't be scrutinising the times they arrive too closely. So briefly thanks to all who've responded so far either with lists or offers to write and I hope you all have a peaceful, joyous night tonight.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 31 December 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

The hardest thing about choosing favorite music from the past year is it hasn't had time to marinate. Last night after a movie I was eating incredibly greasy food and listening to soul music -- Otis Redding and such. How can new songs compete with ones that my mother listened to on the radio as a ten year-old, I lost my virginity to, that played at a friend's funeral?

Tonight I was at a New Year's party full of meta-goths (I don't know what to call them anymore, they're not so anachronistic anymore, they look more like sleek characters from a William Gibson novel like Idoru). A band was playing loud originals that sounded vaguely like Depeche Mode, and I felt nothing, even during an odd cover of Phil Collins' "In The Air." But as soon as they stopped and the DJ started playing early 80s era New Order and such, the party really came alive. People danced, I danced, guzzled champagne, made out with my girlfriend, and felt waves of memories wash over me associated with each song. I'm not a huge nostalgist -- I spend most of my time listening to new music. But I wonder, will songs this year, and last year, and next year, have the same impact on me in the next ten, twenty, thirty years?

I guess there's a "sweet spot" of time between the age of about twelve and twenty two when everything is more dramatically burned into your brain and music is the soundtrack of the firsts in your life. Some of the songs we somewhat calculatingly jockey into positions to make some master cannon list may or may not be the soundtrack of some 15 year-old's life right now. Are they as good?

I dunno. I'm getting old. I'm drunk. Happy new year!

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Sunday, 1 January 2006 07:44 (twenty years ago)

Happy new year F'n'b, I still love todays music but feel you.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 1 January 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

As I haven't got round to adding the various lists which have arrived in the past 3 days I'll give one more chance for those who've been dithering as to their choices. I don't expect to receive many more lists, I've received 70+ albums and 60+ tracks lists so far. I'll accept lists until midnight (GMT) tonight i.e a little under 12 hours from now. After that the poll will definitely close.

Thanks to all who've responded. All being well I hope to start the reveal at the beginning of next week.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 2 January 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I NEED 100 PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR BOOM BIP AND HOOD. NOW!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 2 January 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I voted for Anniemal, as it only got a limited release in 2004, but I'm not sure if it's allowed. Oh well.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 2 January 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Just under SIX hours to go.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 2 January 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

THREE hours to go.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 2 January 2006 21:01 (twenty years ago)

ONE hour to go.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 2 January 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

=====Poll now closed=====

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 00:03 (twenty years ago)

i forget what i said in my email, billy, but i am willing to write any necessary blurbs.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Alex. check yr email. ta

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Anniemal eligible in U.S. certainly, and I think the limitation of its original release makes it eligible anywhere.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

So will results come before Pazz & Jop?

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Beginning of next week ccording to Billy. Something to look forward to (I like the exitement of the slow striptease of ILM's preferences)

thousands of tiny luminous spheres (plebian), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

sunday was mentioned ...

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 8 January 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

...that's true. I'm waiting for a few more blurbs to arrive (hint hint). If anyone wants to write something, whether you voted or not, feel free to get in touch, there's a few things, particularly r'n'b/hiphop which have blank spaces next to at the moment.

I'll more than likely start with the tracks tomorrow.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 8 January 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Billy after the Top 100? countdown can you please list all the albums voted for - as was done on the previous 2004 ILM poll.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 8 January 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

My blurbs have been written ... I'm going to look them over again now and send them off.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 8 January 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

DJ Martian, yes, no problem but it'll be a big post.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Billy, re: december 28th post

Bumpity bump. A little over THREE days to go. Currently a little over 360 albums and 410 tracks voted for.

What were the final totals when the poll closed?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

IIRC 569 albums and 760 tracks.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

interesting more albums voted for in 2005, compared with 2004 poll.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)
