Also, did anyone see Audion/Ellen Allien at 1015 Fulsom? I went, and, to say the least, I was really, really disappointed. It was billed as a live performance, and instead I got to see the world's most personality-free set ever from Matthew Dear. Once he had forced half the people to go downstairs into the trance room, Ellen took the stage and got to try and work up the crowd with her set. NO live performance, and Matthew Dear fucked it all up. Dry as the Sahara as usual.

Actually, I saw him last year at the WMC in Miami, and he rocked South Beach. Love his recordings, hate his DJ sets. Snore.

well, i'd certainly like to meet any and all of you ILMers headed to the event. how shall we do this?

My favorite parts were the "red" vocal recitation in the first section, and then those endless rolling ring-modulated waves going back and forth in the second one. We were right next to the far-left speaker in the back though, and definitely caught some way-too-loud frequencies at certain points.

i have just come from the Cow Palace where they are having the flower show. i suggest everyone go there for the Gong display they have in one of the Marketplace wings. get a friend to bang the gong and stand there with your head relatively close - you will be filled with incredible multiple levels of vibration. i'm not even kidding. i had no idea how great gongs were. they are really amazing!!!

Hell yes the sound is good at Mighty, in an oldschool way - it's the 177 Townsend sound system (Universe - remember that joint!?), the 4-corner 10-foot tall towers now covered with graf pieces. It ain't clean and crystalline and conversational like the 1015 system, but it hits just right and resonates with the warmth of a nice old record, as long as some man-breaks DJ isn't pushing the levels higher than his testosterone level. Michael Mayer rocked that system a year or two ago, till 5 in the AM, it was just lovely.

Has anyone been to Fat City, formerly Studio Z, next to the Paradise Lounge? they are booking crap in there now but the space is allegedly big and the soundsystem has apparently been upgraded. They just need to start booking things people would want to see.

The location has always been excellent, but it's a BIG cavernous box and few promoters are ever really able to fill the space - bigger acts are better at a more well-known venue with better amenities, and smaller acts are, well, smaller. I hope they spent the bucks to not just put in a big sound system but to actually make the place feel more inviting, smaller, and work on the acoustics.

RML (Recombinant Media Labs)is in SOMA...they had tomas fehlmann, speedy j, deadbeat...but i'm pretty sure this show is at their old digs near hunters point.

Okay I've been to the Hunter's Point digs (saw Deadbeat and and and somewhere not memorable. . . Fehlmann. . . no. . . eh either way.) That Hunter's Point location is a bitch to get to. Still Badawi and Kode-9 sounds nice.

Yes, Damian Taylor was fiddling with a Lemur and what (from a distance) resembled a Dance Dance Revolution floor pad, but turned out to be more like a cross between a crazy warlock's psychic apparatus and some navy sonar pulsing thing. It looked absurdly cool...

The show was very enjoyable. I do pity poor Chris Corsano whose virtuosic subtlety is somewhat wasted on the big Bjork spectacle...

The infamous Yamamoto, besides being a core member of the Boredoms for many years, operates Osaka's club Bears, supporting young bands around the Kansai area. Did anyone make the long, long trek out to Bayview for Galoppierende Zuversicht?

GZ were good, but Sammy D pretty much tore the place up. Might have been some substance-induced aural hallucination, but I think he threw some Violetta Parra-esque folk singing into the mix. Ricardo rip-off or no, it was the awesomest SF dancey moment I've had so far.

Nice sound too. Wish I'd been there for Kode 9.

Silver Apples at Cafe du Nord on 09/20. I wonder what they'll sound like without Taylor. A friend went to the show in NYC said it was good but I don't know after being disappointed by so many of my favorite 60's acts doing revivals i'm on the fence. i am. does it suck? is it tiny? i saw their ebay page and they had some cool stuff i'd buy, but heard not everything in the store is listed on the site. so figured i could peruse the store and save on shipping all in one.

It is a decent shop - I have found some sweet jazz and folk LPs there over the years and usually pretty cheap, but the majority of the time I walk out empty handed and I've been dying to buy records at the time...

Basically, would I come up from the city just for TLRS? No. But if it is part of a Sonoma County daytrip, sure.

Escort are from New York and have been self-releasing a bunch of fantastic singles over the past year, you should check them out post-haste. the cosmic thing has been happening, but slowly. this year saw Lindstrom, Prins Thomas and Todd Terje all come through (the latter two within a week of each other)...i've already head people coming into the shop looking for "space disco" which is cool. i guess i need to start labeling 12"s with that....

I had soooooooo much fun when I was in San Fran last week--saw Magik Markers w/Ben Chansy, went to the Boris/Om in-stores, Matthew Dear/Mobius Band at Mezzanine was fun, bought lots of records at Amoeba and Aquarius, ate lots of great food (Metro Kathmandu is really good Nepalese food, if you haven't been)

Atlanta is nice and all music-wise, but I can't imagine having the selection and having to make such choices about which shows to see...I wanted to see Modeselektor at Kontrol, but Matthew Dear won on account of my cousin's roommate's electro group opening the show

i honestly wasn't too stoked on the goldies party. got there and some girl was playing upbeat dancey world music. lots of people dancing ,but it was WAY TOO FUCKING LOUD (and not very good). i waited forever before hatchback and sorcerer went on. they played some cool tracks, but we were kinda over the whole shebang (really mixed crowd, as should be expected for that sort of event) and left before dominique went on :(

i don't feel so bad now, thanks. i just wasn't feeling up to it unfortunately.

i went. mixed bag honestly. besides the girl that works there that fucked us over on guest list and drink tickets ("sorry, these drink tickets you were just given 2 days ago expired yesterday"), and the fact that it was overrun w/ironic non hipsters - frat boys wearing pimp and hoe clothing - and the fact that they played some totally shitty tunes, and the fact that escort kinda sounds like a wedding band except for starlight and the belle epoque cover, i had a good time. probably because it drank too much.

anyone else make it to see robyn on friday night? my girl and i had a great time. is her backing band the teddybears guys sans headgear? the suits looked about right.

anyone go to metro area ? how was it, bummed I couldn't make it. more importantly what did they play ?

the crowd at vessel generally sucks. they played disco, for the most part; d-train etc. didn't stay long enough to hear if they played any classic house or newer stuff.

it was fun! it got housier as the night wore on, and it was awesome seeing the culture clash between the bottle service tourist/b&t/superrich crowd and the SF underground disco folks (who were better dressed if i may say so, myself excluded). i got there around 10.45 (because of the "unlimited guestlist" that capped at 11pm) and already Conor & Travis were getting hassled in the booth by nearly-drunk debutantes slurring in foreign accents "are you gonna play any hip hop?". They were over it from the jump. I did see lots of "lesbians" making out and hoochie line dancing though. that was fun. :)

still, it was great for me because a ton of my friends were there and the music was great. they ended up shutting down at 2 because all that was left were our little hardcore crew and that wasn't enough for the bar staff to keep the place open, esp after the bar itself closed. so the party ended and we all shuffled over to the underground at the old inhouse records space on mission @ 6th where Alexkid & Mr. C were playing, and I proceeded to chew Mr. C's ear off about how I still know all the lyrics to his rap in "Pro-Gen". yeah. :)

Talking to Morgan & Darshan at the end of the night, they didn't seem too thrilled about the gig. Bummer, I had fun!

since it's in a columbarium it usually stayed respectful & quiet (as you do when you're surrounded by framed urns containing names & dates of the deceased within), people would whisper and the most amazing aspect was finding the nodes in the hallways where you could overhear about two or three seperate acts playing in their different corners, echoing off the marble & glass, but it sort of reached a tipping point last year when there were so many people that everyone just flat out began talking and now that's all you can hear

but yeah one of the most interesting bay area new music events for the last 10+ years running, it's just better when people aren't accidentally being pushed over into the gardens

open mind is closing it's doors for good at the end of the month. a bunch of times i've walked all the way over there and they're closed. i could tell the owner wasn't really into it anymore. i saw two guys walk in and say "hi, we're from the hair salon" and started talking about the molding or some other shit and i finally asked. i guess they're going online. good luck. the best part of that store is digging through all the relatively cheap, unknown shit and being able to listen on the turntables. i guess they're having a party w/bands (dunno who) on the 18th. RIP
