xpost - sorry, talking about the Stay Real / just blaze controversy beat

team jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Its Jay-Z's PSA from the Black Album. Both the Black album and Eclipse came out around the same time. I think Black Moon's came out first.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, i recognize it now.

i meant what the original sample was, not who came out w/it first.

team jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh my bad I forget. I'm not really good with that sorta sample ID stuff. I do know that it was used as an interlude on O.C.'s 1994 album Word...Life first though.

there's a cool little mix here where they play an original sample followed by a few hip hop songs that used it. http://www.abcdrduson.com/playlists/playlist.php?id=10

my favorite gem on this thread (that I've looked at so far) is the Lil Wayne's amazing non-booth freestyle from Rap City. the first time I saw that was totally the reason I bought Tha Carter II. the way he says "that's not on the album" at the end is classic.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I always thought this was one of the better Murder inc beats. I swear a really similar flute loop is used in something else, if anyone knows what I'm talking about help me out.

-- deej.. (clublonel...), February 8th, 2006.

"Happy" by Ashanti was a straight jack of the beat from "mary jane" by Scarface.

Gravediggaz - 1-800 Suicide.

The verses are completely different than the album version.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Thatd be it then.
All those millenial R&B stars reused mid-90s rap samples, like that Faith Evans album. Its weird!

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

"Baby" was the Ashanti track with the "Mary Jane" rip. But yeah, Irv Gotti really raped the mid-90s.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Gravediggaz - 1-800 Suicide.

that version was on some soundtrack - can't recall which.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of Scarface I was surprised how few videos of his are up - I was looking for "Never Seen a Man Cry" which I remember being on The Box when I was young, but they didn't even have recent shit like "my Block." The only Geto Boys result is "Tom Green meets Bushwick Bill."

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I think the reason I like "Livin' It Up" so much, other than the obvious Stevie Wonder chorus, is that it sounds much more like a Puffy-move than a murder inc one - more on the uptempo dance tip than the recycling rap + Ja/Ashanti "chemistry."

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I saw Ja Rule's greatest hits used for 7.99 a couple weeks ago and almost bought it.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah "Livin' It Up" is definitely kind of an uncharacteristic Murder Inc hit (maybe the only truly uptempo one besides like "Holla Holla"?). I've been tempted get Exodus too, but yo, no "Between Me And You"!?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Fuck..nigga is right. "Happy" is definately a straight jack of something, though.

I liked "rain on me" by Ashanti with the "look of love"/"can i live" sample. The remix with Ghostface especially.

Yeah i dunno about "spring again" being his best single "by far" either. Biz put out a lot of good singles. "Nobody beats the biz", "vapors" (and any of the other singles from "goin' off"), "just a friend", "let me turn you on"..

I wish they had the video to the Strictly Roots/Grand Puba/Fat Joe "beg no friends" remix video on here. Ralph Mcdaniels used to play that all the time. One of the grimiest vids i've ever seen. The basketball beatdown scene rules.

Phil ice-grillin' the camera in the "home" video is a great rap video moment moment.

$LYRICALLY I'M LIKE MR PERFECT$, Thursday, 9 February 2006 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh don't take my Biz comment to heart its just another ILM anti-canon "do you hate fun?" provocations. I do listen to "Spring Again" more than most of those, I know Vapors is considerd the classic but yeah.

xpost I've always preferred the video track to the album version except I don't remember that off-key trumpet going off every bar. what thas about?

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 4 May 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the brass section at the beginning threw me off.. however, the off-key organ that goes throughout the song has always been there, however it's mixed low and subtle in the original, but much higher in this version, which kinda rubs the wrong way with me for some reason.

Anyway:

KRS-One: "MCs Act Like They Don't Know"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=JseqeZe-rCQ&search=mcs%20act%20like%20they%20don%27t%20know

Hot Premier beat.

KRS makes an anti-rockist statement, perhaps:

MCs can only battle with rhymes that got punchlines
Let's battle to see who headlines
Instead of blow for blow, let's go show for show
toe for toe, yo you better act like you know
too many mcs take that word mc lightly
they can't move a crowd not even slightly

This might sound dumb, but when I heard that in high school it actually made me re-think what "skills" should mean.

Ha, I love how they zoom in on his legs like "Look how stiff this motherfucker is"

A friend's dad was a producer for BET and I was once in the audience of Teen Summit -- it was a show about racism so they needed some white kids to be in the audience. I actually stood up and made a comment. It was something about getting followed in stores.
