There needs to be a thread for this album. I can't stop listening to it. Actually, I can't stop listening to [the non-remixed] "Just Like We (Breakdown)".

i don't get hot chip. i saw them live and they spent 80% of the set fannying about with cowbells and breaking their projector like some kind of appalling LCD soundsystem-lite.

then they played one song, towards the end of the set, that was so gut-punchingly wonderful i never wanted it to end. like some kind of mad synthetic funk-powered talking heads workout ... dripping with hooks and absolutely sensational.

then they went back to going HONK beep PARP squelch tinky-tinky-tinky-tinky BAAAARP and their projector stopped working again.

listening to this now. luuuuuuuuuuuuuuv it. best thing all year. is their older stuff this good? reminds me at times of cut copy but more natural and with humour.

Christ almighty is this ever good. I really didn't like Coming On Strong, but this one's just so breathtakingly easy to listen to that it's almost alarming. Maybe they beefed up the low end? I remember Coming On Strong sounding kinda artlessly chintzy, like they were sufficiently satisfied with making a blindingly ahead-of-the-curve R&B album that they didn't bother to make a GOOD blindingly ahead-of-the-etc., but this is just relentlessly dance-y. And WOW does "Over & Over" trump anything on the first album.

This record is terrible" I had to join in and see if it was as much fun as it looked. The album is on DFA/Astralwerks, it was NOT produced by the DFA. We also have a remix of Colours coming out sometime later this year.

I saw them play at Sonar in Barcelona last summer and I loved it. They looked as if a crazy scientist had tried to clone a boyband and something went terribly wrong - all he got was nerds. The indierock nerd, the technerd, the soulnerd - even the good looking one tried to hide his face behind huge sunglasses. Loved it. Then I saw them a couple of weeks ago in Berlin but I wasn't overwhelmed like in Barcelona.

To try to answer cutty's question, it sounds very affected and sortve intentionally half assed to me. I donno I listened to it once and wasn't really feeling it. Not trying to make a big deal about this; just not my thing.

There is a Solid Groove remix of one of their songs I like a lot actually.

it's more like a version of last exit that doesn't make me fall asleep. not that i dislike that album, but it seriously puts me to sleep.

picked up 'coming on strong' on the wkend and it aint half bloody different. its a lot more downtempo, almost dubby and lounge jazz at times, with few apparent hooks.

in contrast 'warning' is much more immediate, full of energy and crafty little side steps. the production is very tactile. sounds like another band!

I saw them at the Echo in L.A. friday night and it was fun as hell, even if what Cutty says might be true. People danced the whole time, even to the slower ones like "Crap Kraft Dinner." It was the best show I've seen in a while.

Echodex- the song in question is actually "The Beach Party." Sounds a lot different (and in my opinion better) than it does on the album. I was actually at both performances in San Francisco yesterday and found that I enjoyed a lot of the stuff off of Coming on Strong a lot more live than I do on the album. The synth and speed they add to these tracks live give them a lot more oomph and make them much more enjoyable. I was rather disappointed that with the two performances combined I don't think I even saw them play for an hour. Some of the songs were played at both gigs, so I think I only heard them play 5 or 6 tracks total in the end. (I guess they thought since they were the opener for Stereolab they should only play 30 minutes.) They did sound great, and hearing "No Fit State" live almost made it worth it. Definitely the stand out track live as well as recorded.

Both the Justus and the Naum Gabo are both way better than the Solid Groove one, it's a shame that Solid Groove actually graced a big fancy dfa/emi double pack (probably what I like best about DFA, always nice remix packages!)

Hot chip are wonderous! Personally i love "look after me" from THE WARNING. I've only heard it a few times but can't wait for the record to come out! alexis has a really soulful voice on it. i really think hot chip are becoming a take-to-your-heart band. the lyrics alone are brilliant.

Scissor Sisters' "Take Your Mama Out,"

JEBUS CRIPES LET ME SECOND THIS. I grabbed a torrent of all their remix work and this one stood head and shoulders above nearly every song I've ever heard of theirs. It is also probably the best possible song to play after Vitalic's "Fanfares".

Clor are marvellous on record but sound like a load of indie rock plodders live. A word in their shell-likes: less guitar and more synth in the mix, thank you.

I saw Hot Chip support Goldfrapp a few weeks ago and they were fucking amazing. They look like someone had created another Gorillaz but forgot to turn them into cartoons. I loved the five geeks with keyboards and cowbells schtick.

They sound nothing like LCD Soundsystem to me. For one thing they don't bore me to tears within 30 seconds. Be honest: how many DFA remix CDs does everyone on here own, and how often have you actually listened to them?

yeah the Last Exit comparisons are way off base. Hot Chip are like the inmates in One flew over the cukoos nest where the Junior Boys are like Michael Mann's "Heat".

the song being performed in that Youtube clip is "The Ass Attack" which was a b side of the "down With Prince" single. i had a bit of a problem with Alexis's voice initially but now i love it (and i hardly ever change my mind about voices i dislike). the video for "over and Over" makes me insanely happpy.

i love hot chip. especially when they play live and the one guy bounces up and down dancing while playing the keyboards, but his head remains absolutely motionless somehow. its amazing. kinda like a reverse bobblehead. i couldn't stop staring at him, the entire show. mesmerized.

Yeah, ought to be twice as long. "Boy From School" is an instant dewy-eyed pop thrill. Should've been a hit. Easily melodic enough. I wonder what Geir would think. Prob too "rhythmic" and "black" derived sonically for his tastes even tho its as delectably melodic as the beach boys... and lushly harmony laden.

I was pleasantly surprised by this cos it reminds me strongly of The Beta Band, but obviously with a greater electro-funk-2step feel (which is all to the good). Almost the very definition of Summery music I think. Also strangely emotive given that I was lead to believe they were a kind of smug/jokey sort of outfit. Perhaps that's more an issue with the first album? Will check that out...

Still not really sure about this at all. Some great moments (No Fit State, Boy From School, Colours) but it feels a bit clumsy at the same time. Partly to do with all that school music lesson percussion all over the place. The Naum Garbo remix of Over and Over is so much more streamlined and danceable than the original that I can't listen to the album version without skipping it.

Bet they're good live though.

I doubt that is a female vocal- isn't it just Hot Chip bloke "A" giving it some androgynous action? FWIW I think "Careful" is sonically the strongest track with its crash-bang-whollop hardcore/broken down Dizzee Rascal type beats contrasting nicely with the kind of beatific synth and harmonies bit. Marcello: I fail to see quite whats so "oafish" about Chip bloke "B"'s vox, surely oafish would better describe say a Kelly Jones vocal (that nauseous throat rasp as sonic signiature of manful rockingness)? I agree that asides from the lush harmony/androgynous vocals some of the vocals are rather ordinary, but that's almost part of the charm, that disconnect between music and vocals, the artfully strange and the artlessly ordinary...

These are all excuses.

The guy basically can't sing.

The songs are reasonable and there's some imagination in the production but they need a proper singer.

I had the same problem with the Junior Boys.

Voices are a major sticking point with me.

Non-professional or imperfect voices can work in the right setting - see Escalator Over The Hill for a start - but in this context are offputting.

still cant get past the two tiers of track quality on this album unfortunately. the unnevenness which was a strength of the first album seems to really work against them in this one. if i was forced to choose, i'd take the barbarian ep ('over and over', 'no fit state', plus the excellent 'my shit's on fire' and 'barbarian') with no hesitations over the album, even if it does mean sacrificing 'just like we' and 'boy from school'.

I really didn't mind the voices- I wouldn't suggest that they are very "full" or "rich", but they are on note and express the lyrical content effectively. I can see where you might be coming from Marcello, in as much that usually highly "produced" lush artificial music demands a similarly trained and conventional voice. However, its partly this mis-match which brings out the oddity in the backing. It gives it a certain vulnerability- which would be lost if sung by someone with a more conventionally attractive voice... and these aren't excuses, I really hadn't once considered the voice "weak", just soft and perhaps a little wan, as befits the general atmosphere...

i listened to this again today in the gym. for me the problem isn't the voices - hellfire, i'm a new order fan; i like weedy men who can't hold a tune - but the production and the mix. there's a track towards the end (i'd tell you which if my fucking powerbook hadn't just thrown one of its periodic i'm-not-going-to-make-any-noise flakeys and my iPod wasn't in the car) that's got all the textures of prime 1983 depeche mode ... except everything just feels like it's in the wrong place; the sounds drift and float about in the mix, rather than actually having any defined sense of place.

it's just too soft, too weedy; almost apologetic. and it's not just the production; the same goes for the songs. there are five of them, FFS! they should be making a racket; instead they seem scared to commit to anything - a melody, a hook, a beat.

there are some interesting moments, but that's all.

I'm not sure I'd want them to sound like New Order -- whether or not I think it works, what it sounds to me like they're trying to do is blend the most unholy combination of genres: i.e. twee, electronica / synthpop and crunk (or similar). The dissonance in the production doesn't seem so inexplicable if you're coming to it after the racket which a lot of 06 hip-hop seems to be chasing. The tension between the slightly splattery rhythmic textures and the forcefully restrained and mannered vocals and production seems to me deliberate, along the lines of their occasional nods to 'urban' music (which often seems to hover between homage, affectionate parody and something slightly unpleasant) e.g. I ride, you ride, we ride, in my ride on the first album.

oh, i'm quite sure it is deliberate: and yes, i think you're probably right about what they're doing/aiming to do and the attitude with which they're going about it. watching them live, everything they did seemed quite studied, even their tooling about between synths (although they fucked up their back-projections something rotten) ... i guess what i mean is that they've put a lot of focus into sounding unfocused.

sadly, i think that's a mistake because all too often you end up with music that's entirely for the head and bypasses the heart completely. like i say: i get fleeting moments of connection from "the warning", but that's it.

Thats weird I find it hits both "pop" lizard brain and "emotional" centres quite heavily- and actually they sound pretty focused most of the time (on record at least)-- it has a great wide screen stereo field as well, which makes for engaging headphone listening unlike a lot of electronic records (not minimal techno mind) these days which sound shit under closer inspection, as if they have been too lazy to do proper stereo placement... The only track that sounds a mess on record is "over and over" which sounds overly crammed with stuff.

Again, a record which I found sounded better in the outdoors and in the sunshine. The vocals I'm still not sure about (Steve Mason out of the Beta Band is kind of unassailable when it comes to this type of avant-indie deadpan singing). Don't know about Robert Wyatt singing with Chicory Tip (as Morley suggested in his OMM review), but Difford and Tilbrook kept coming to my mind. "Over And Over" sounds like something Squeeze might have done if they'd taken the other fork in the road after "Take Me I'm Yours," and I think is the album's best track. "Look After Me" and "So Glad To See You" are rather touching, but I kept wishing Robert Wyatt were singing them.

I picked up the Warning in the Tower bankruptcy extravaganza and I'm liking it the more and more I put it on. "Careful" is probably my favorite - it reminds me a lot of Disco Inferno, the raccous backing-track plus beautiful melody on top thing. Lower the voices in the mix and it sounds like something that could have been on Technicolour.
