****GROOVY MAN! IT'S THE THREAD FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE ILX 60'S POLL****

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed
Following popular request here's the thread for nominations for the ILX best of the 60's polls.

You will be allowed 15 nominations for tracks and albums, split anyway you like. If you want to pick 15 albums and no tracks or vice versa then you can. Please specify what format your choices are, as per my entry below.

Only albums releasd in that decade will count, so no subsequently released compilations. However I'm minded to allow concert recordings which were subsequently released to be included e.g Sam Cooke's live at the Harlem Square Club or Bob Dylan's live at Manchester Free Trade Hall.

Deadline will be 17:00 BST 30th April 2005

Use this thread to also pimp for any songs/albums, YSI tracks, to discuss what format you'd like the voting to be in and any other folderol.

The deadline is a year ago?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

won't splitting tracks and albums make the voting really splintered?

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

The deadline is a year ago?

-- sovietpanda (sovietpand...) (webmail), March 29th, 2006 5:21 PM.

1. Oops, deadline is 30th April 2006 of course.
2. I'm not sure what you mean by splintered. There'll be two separate polls, and I'm sure there'll be sufficient noms over the next month to make it worthwhile.

I suppose you can nominate something which has already been nominated, but it's a little pointless as it'll still only be allowed to get voted for once.

The seventies poll was split between the punkers and the discoers.

Guess the sixties be split between the poppers and the jazzers.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 30 March 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

More like the soulers and the rockers I'd say. The jazz contingent in ILE is too small to make an impression, so what end up on these lists are the obvious choices (in this case, Miles and most likely Trane).

musically (musically), Friday, 31 March 2006 00:02 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, Sgt. Pepper hasn't been.

darin (darin), Friday, 31 March 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, never mind, I am clearly senile. But Paint it Black and Ladyland were.

musically (musically), Friday, 31 March 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

(That's because Sgt. Pepper sucks!)

js (honestengine), Friday, 31 March 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

The debuts from Soft Machine and Gal Costa (both 1969)

Gal Costa's debut was in 1967 if memory serves. Though she did have an eponymous, and superior, album released in 1969 (sorry for the pedantry).

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Friday, 31 March 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Though the 1967 one was with Caetano, so maybe I'm being daft.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Friday, 31 March 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

Somebody please nominate!!!:

Dark City Sisters and Flying Jazz Queens, "Insizwa" (unknown year)

i was going to nominate that! but when i couldn't verify the year, i left it off. it had to be the '60s though, right? i think they formed in the late '50s.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 31 March 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

(also wasn't it just dark city sisters? i thought the flying jazz queens were separate but related group?)

ewmy (ewmy), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to hold off nominating anything because it's too difficult to nominate only 15 albums and 15 trax from the 60s. I know I'm going to regret it, but the standard of nominations has been great so far!

Rodney's motives are beyond the comprehension of men (R. J. Greene), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, then if anyone is keeping score please substitute "I'm A Man" by the Yardbirds for "Signed, Sealed, Delivered".

musically (musically), Friday, 31 March 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

It will be highly refreshing to see a 60's list where Sgt Pepper's is merely the 5th or 6th highest placed Beatles record, right where it belongs. xpost

excuse me, 9 left

Cunga (Cunga), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

The 60s was the best decade ever for singles, so there's gonna be some serious vote splitting. It was the heyday for so many "singles genres" like doo wop, surf, garage, girl groups, brit invasion, MOTOWN, stax/volt, brill building, bacharach, bubblegum, etc in addition to all the great classic rock stuff. Just a mindblowing amount of material to choose from.

Keith C (lync0), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'd love to see the compiled lists of noms-so-far, if anybody is willing to put them together, before I make my nominations. Most everything I can think of has already been nominated, though I will be adding some Zappa.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 1 April 2006 02:21 (nineteen years ago)

This is actually a various artists album and is entitled "Tropicália: ou Panis et circenses".

It's also a track, which is what I nominated.

Arg, I forgot the Stooges. Somebody please nominate "No Fun"? And Sgt. Peppers?

I'm sure the '70s poll got some dates wrong: Why penalize this poll?

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Sunday, 2 April 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

"ABC" and Bryter Later are both 1970 according to AMG.

cuz i switched out easter everywhere, cuz someone else nom'd it. or something.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Sunday, 2 April 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

The Gal Costa album nominated, is that the one that starts with "Não Identificado"? 'Cus that's the one I'd want to vote for. The other one from '69 has a hand-drawn cover and the first track is "Cinema Olympia."

Keith C (lync0), Sunday, 2 April 2006 02:40 (nineteen years ago)

I should have been more specific to which Costa album I wanted to nominate. But yes, the one I had in mind has Nao Identicado as the opening track. The other Gal Costa self-titled album from 1969 is ace too, come to think of it.

Jeff K (jeff k), Sunday, 2 April 2006 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

My last 2 picks:

Gilberto Gil - S/T (1968)

Bitches Brew is another 1970 release.

Rodney G., Monday, 3 April 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Mike, An Electric Storm has been picked though it's down wrongly as by Electric Storm. (Whistles sheepishly and shuffles away)....

The 60s remain a peculiarly unheard decade for me and this unbalanced list reflects this underexposure. I'd be interested to see some more surf rock picks.

Ogmor Roundtrouser (Ogmor Roundtrouser), Monday, 3 April 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Bitches Brew is another 1970 release.

I was under that impression too, but then I checked Miles' discography on AMG, and it says 1969. But if you check the album details they list the recording dates but not the release date. What's up with that? Anyway, I think the Miles biographies I've read say it's 1970.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 3 April 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

I was trying to nail this one down earlier today myself. Both the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz and the pre-CD-era Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll (which uses info from Billboard and Whitburn's Record Research) say 1969.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 3 April 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Tracks

1. Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - "Fire"
2. The Standells - "Dirty Water"
3. The Beatles - "Revolution"

6. Solomon Burke - "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love"
7. Etta James - "I'd Rather Go Blind"
8. Ike & Tina Turner - "River Deep, Mountain High"
9. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - "You Really Got A Hold On Me"
10. Sam Cooke - "Chain Gang"
10. Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte Bardot - "Bonnie & Clyde"
11. Serge Gainsbourg - "Requiem Pour Un Con"
12. Serge Gainsbourg - "Chatterton"

Serge Gainsbourg - Initials B.B.

I sort of ran out of songs at the end.

I think the rule of thumb should be that if it's 'definitely' been released in the 70's or been nominated for the 70's poll then it's ineligible, otherwise it should be included.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 07:05 (nineteen years ago)

For what its worth, Bitches Brew placed 59th in the 70s poll.

Chairman Doinel (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

Again, why penalize this poll for the mistakes of another one we might have had nothing to do with?

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

Miles Davis- Filles de Kilamanjaro
Beach Boys- Smile (is this elligible, out of curiosity? I completely understand if its not, since it would be a boot, but if it is eligible, I definitely would like to see it in).
Van Dyke Parks- Song Cycle

Harrison Barr (Petar), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Pete is OTM. There are plenty of citations for Bitches Brew coming out in late '69 -- other polls don't have, or shouldn't have, any bearing on this one.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

(Aw shit, that's 16...OK, remove "Father Cannot Yell" pls.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 05:50 (nineteen years ago)

"why penalize this poll for the mistakes of another one we might have had nothing to do with?" & "There are plenty of citations for Bitches Brew coming out in late '69 -- other polls don't have, or shouldn't have, any bearing on this one."

According to the reissue's liner notes, the album was recorded in late '69, but it came out in April of '70.

Chairman Doinel (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, that's news to me. Good enough reason to exclude it.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

OK, since White Noise was already named, I change that album pick to The Turtles - The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

"Gotta See Jane" by R Dean Taylor charted in 1971.

musically (musically), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

I really want to throw some nominations into the mix, but it's way too hard to narrow things down. It's times like this I wish I had a siamese twin.

1) jimi hendrix experience - all along the watchtower

Oh good, I was going to list that and 1983, but then I said, eh, Electricladyland is already listed (even though I only really like individual tracks from it).

-- Rockist_Scientist (Al__suca...), Yesterday. (later)

yeah im surprised we went this long without it getting nom'd, deadset stone cold classic for mine. still that's the 60s for you, voting for this is gonna be a bitch, my "shortlist" for votes is already around 120, and we still have three weeks of nominations left! how are you supposed to rank one kind of genius, say sam cooke or the supremes, against the stones or stooges or velvets? impossible.

i hope we get to pick 100 tracks like in the 80s poll. billy dods you don't mind counting that many do you? :)

Beagle Boy (Beagle Boy), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

We've got a long way without anyone mentioning "Son of a Preacher man".

I hope someone does soon, otherwise I'm going to have to change my nominations.

oi! you haven't included my 3 track nominees in that list

(pl. don't re-post the list yet again, just remember for April 30th)

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 13 April 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

Jimi Hendrix Experience - 1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Moon Turn The Tides...Gently, Gently Away

I put these together as one song because they are kind of 2 parts of the same piece of music, and in previous CD pressings the break between the 2 tracks occurs in different places. I have a CD where "1983" is about 8 minutes and "Moon" is about 7 minutes. But there's also a version where "1983" is 13:30 and "Moon" is about 1:30.

Keith C (lync0), Sunday, 23 April 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

I nominated Maytals - Pressure Drop way up top, but it appears to have placed in the 70's poll, making its nomination here somewhat moot. Can I replace?

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Sunday, 23 April 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

Albums:

Frank Sinatra - September of My Years ('65)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 24 April 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

The Maytals was included in the 70s poll because noone pointed out that it shouldn't be there until it was too late. It sort of went in by default, but its a 60s song.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 24 April 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm... It doesn't look as if "Son of a Preacher Man" has been nominated yet, and this poll wouldn't be right without it.

So, please delete my nom. for "lovechild" by the Supremes (if someone else nominated that, that would be nice) and insert:

Dusty Springfield "Son of a Preacher Man"

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 24 April 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Someone should also nominate the Mary Poppins soundtrack, please?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

I think I've got all the various nominations down, but please check to see that yours is there. There's a little over two days to go for nominations so get them in (hint - more Tim Hardin and Nina Simone).

At the moment I'm planning to allow people to vote for up to 40 tracks/albums, with 800 points to be split between them, with a max of 50 points. In addition one track/album will be allowed a bonus 100 points, so could get 150 points in total. But as always I'm open to suggestions.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry to make a minor change over a nomination that has no chance of making the final list, but now that I think of it, the Fairouz album is just: Bint el Harass. (Safarbarlek is a different soundtrack album, but the two were put togehter on CD.) Thnx.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

All tracks, no albums from me:

1) The Beatles - The Word
2) The Doors - Strange Days
3) The Doors - People Are Strange
4) The Doors - The Crystal Ship
5) The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown
6) Jimi Hendrix Experience - Spanish Castle Magic
7) Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
8) The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
9) The Kinks - Tired of Waiting For You
10) The Mamas and the Papas - Creque Alley
11) The Monkees - Last Train To Clarksville
12) The Small Faces - Itchycoo Park
13) Velvet Underground - Venus in Furs
14) Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning
15) Velvet Underground - Here She Comes

if any of these are invalid for some reason then I'll have The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money as my subsitute

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Thursday, 27 April 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

I think the 70s poll had a good structure, although the pollster allowed for 70s votes...that might be too much? Or not. And do you want blurbs? Say yes!

musically (musically), Thursday, 27 April 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Can we have transferrable votes, please? So that if something I give 25 points to doesn't make the top 100, my votes are transferred to a second choice and so on until my votes actually count for something. Also we need to ensure that too many Americans/Brits/whatever don't skew the votes, so every country gets the same number of points, so Tuomas would get as many points to spend as all Americans put together, but obviously since we don't know how many people will vote from which countries, this will need adjusting after the poll...

Or we could just list two top 30s and forget about the fannydangle.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but there will be 2 polls, one for albums and another for tracks. If people just wish to submit an ordered list then I'll use 1=40 points, 2=39 etc which will work out around 800 points in total. Unordered lists will get 20 points each.

I think the idea of transferable votes while nice in theory will be a nightmare to do in practice. I don't think you can do something about weighting different countries votes, however I'll get people to state their country and I could produce separate polls after the main one.

As for blurbs, I'll be very happy and will encourage people to write something.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 28 April 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

I really like the idea of a more democratic poll with #1 not having that much more sway over #2. I think it's also fitting for this decade as people aren't as fanboyish about certain 60s albums and songs as they are about more recent years in music.

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 28 April 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

TRACKS

Lovin Spoonful: Daydream
Beatles: Here, There and Everywhere

Bump - Just under 24 hours to go.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 29 April 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

C'mon people, let's nominate some Beatles songs! And FYI, there are a lot of 70s tracks in the last round-up you did...ABC, Gotta See Jane, and Signed, Sealed, Delivered (sadly, and I bet it wasn't even nommed in the 70s poll because everyone thought it was a 60s track), etc. And since I never replaced my nom for ABC with anything, replace it with "Love Child" by the Supremes.

musically (musically), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm ready for some voting and some revealing. Could we have (much) less than a month for the voting, plz?

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Bless ya, musically, both for nominating Love Child and for saying nice things about the 70s poll.

Billy - I would advise making things relatively easy for yourself and laughing heartily at anyone who suggests transferrable votes. Certain people whinged at me for not allowing more than 70 votes in the 70s poll. Do what you can cope with counting, otherwise its way too much.

a note: Sugar Pie Honey Bunch was known as I Can't Help Myself in some countries. Also, I'd nominated This Old Heart Of Mine half a dozen posts earlier.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 May 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's only known as "I Can't Help Myself." Oh wait, that was probably a joke. My mistake.

I'll post details tomorrow as to how the voting will work out. Thank you for your interest so far

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Do de doo...

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Friday, 9 June 2006 05:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'm about halfway tallying the votes, all being well I'll get them finished by the weekend. However once I've checked them all and asked people for blurbs/searched for comments it'll probably be later this month.
-- Billy Dods (butterbubble...), June 5th, 2006.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Friday, 9 June 2006 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks, I couldn't find the other thread. It doesn't come up in a "60's poll" search.

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Got about another dozen ballots to go through, should get it done tomorrow, if the sun and the football don't distract me that is.

I think I know what's going to win the singles poll. Unless there's a lot of votes for some other tracks it looks pretty unassailable at the moment, and it's not one I would have expected to win too. Albums is a little less clear cut, with only 8 points separating the top 3, numbers 4-8 are all in contention too.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

Funny I would have guessed the exact opposite, a very tight singles poll and a runaway for album.
