Kaito - Hundred Million Lightyears

..and probably a lot more (the knife, morrissey, etc) that I haven't given proper attention to yet

although I guess some of that stuff hasn't been officially released in the first quarter of 2006, so it doesn't really count

Espers II

larssen (larssen), Monday, 3 April 2006 00:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Is Marit Larsen going to be released in the US because it's really difficult to find?

For me the best releases so far are...

Sparks - Hello Young Lovers
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
Liars - Drums Not Dead
V/A - Tropiciala: A Brazilian Revolution in Sound
V/A - New York Noise 2 (not nearly as good as volume 1 though)

And an honorable mention for Boris's Pink, which I heard this year.

the david gilmour solo album

Scott Walker, The Drift

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Monday, 3 April 2006 00:56 (eighteen years ago) link

the streets - the hardest way to make an easy living (not QUITE as mindblowing as his other two records, but still awesome!)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 3 April 2006 01:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I can only imagine that the Marit Larsen will come out in the US if it gets more good press over here. Which is a shame, because it's quite commercial. "This Time Tomorrow" would be a very good single for American pop radio.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 3 April 2006 01:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, one more album: Dresden Dolls - Yes, Virginia

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 3 April 2006 01:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Sondre Lerche - Dooper Sessions (not life changing or anything, but quite a nice record that will probably slip under the radar)

Grandaddy - The Fambly Cat

Band of Horses - Everything All the Time

Clogs - Lantern

Ellen Aillen & Apparat - Orchestra of Bubbles

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Monday, 3 April 2006 01:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Mr. Beast
Fox Confessor
The Life Pursuit
Silent Shout
Pink
Drum's Not Dead

Sean Braudis (Sean Braudis), Monday, 3 April 2006 01:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I think that if given the right amount of record company push, Under the Surface could be incredibly successful. It's such an inclusive and beautiful pop album that the radio would love to get its hands on it. I mean, I think that anyone who hates it is just a mean, mean person who has no place listening to pop in the first place.

Harrison Barr (Petar), Monday, 3 April 2006 02:07 (eighteen years ago) link

The Knife - Silent Shout
Liars - Drum's Not Dead
Ghostface - Fishscale
Om - Conference of the Birds
Witch - Witch

I'm totally curious about Under the Surface now.

Jeff K (jeff k), Monday, 3 April 2006 02:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Islands - Return to the Sea
The Seconds - Kratitude
Measles Mumps Rubella - Fantastic Success

Second:

Liars
The Knife
Band of Horses
Loose Fur
B & S

P.S. Raise your hands if you don't think that "Fishscale" is going to end up in your year end top 5.

M. Biondi (M. Biondi), Monday, 3 April 2006 02:29 (eighteen years ago) link

jesus, so much to listen to, and so little time.

jackl (jackl), Monday, 3 April 2006 04:33 (eighteen years ago) link

ok, i don't mean to beat a dead horse here, but the Goldfrapp album just came out in the US, and it might be my favorite of the year so far, since I didn't really listen to it in 2005. i just thought i'd mention it because it really did not grab me on first listen, so uh if you missed it last year...

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Monday, 3 April 2006 05:03 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, and rather than listen to Show Your Bones (only a few tracks i like so far), check out the Be Your Own PET album. i was really surprised

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Monday, 3 April 2006 05:04 (eighteen years ago) link

the new Howe Gelb one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

look at the question mark, Monday, 3 April 2006 05:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm actually still quite the little fan of White Rose Movement's Kick (due out on the 13th). I'll admit that it's better enjoyed as An Album Full Of Singles than as An Album, but the top-shelfness of damn near all of the singles has me not caring very much.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 3 April 2006 06:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Pentagram - First Daze Here Too
Schizo - Schizo (And The Little Girl) 7" reissue

Luciano's Sci-Fi Hi-Fi mix by a mile for me so far.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 3 April 2006 06:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Orchestra of Bubbles seconded. It's a real grower.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 3 April 2006 07:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm very interested to see The Knife on so many lists.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Kaito
Ghostface
Liars
Boris
Mogwai

what does The Knife sound like?

splates (splates), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:28 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, and Mclusky - Mcluskyism 3 disc set

splates (splates), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:30 (eighteen years ago) link

The Knife... what do they sound like. Good question. Lots of things. Portishead. Aphex Twin. Indulgent tuneless Euro electronica. I'm not impressed. I should try more, I guess. It's an ILM hivemind hype job.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Some albums that I seem to play over and over again:

Robyn – robyn (thanks to ILM, this is by far my most played album of this year)

White Rose Movement - Kick
Acid Casuals – Omni
Lemon Jelly – '64-'95
Belle & Sebastian – The Life Pursuit
Gomez – How We Operate
Adem – Love and Other Planets
Placebo – Meds
Liars – Drums Not Dead
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness – Fear Is On Our Side
The Secret Machines – Ten Silver Drops
Artic Monkey – Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I’m Not

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:47 (eighteen years ago) link

It's an ILM hivemind hype job.

you mean a bunch of people liking the same album?

I would like someone to explain the appeal of Villalobos though, I continue to be mystified by the love for what just sounds like intricate but tedious microhouse (although a 4 minute edit of 'Duso' would be cool).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean that there's an enormous thread about it in which about four people go nuts and then slowly it grows and grows and grows and you feel totally disenfranchised and ostracised if you don't have an opinion on it.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:58 (eighteen years ago) link

ack! i'm glad i did not post what i was going to post about The Knife...or Achso. But maybe there are just natural occuring polarities on ILM and we don't have to fight!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean that there's an enormous thread about it in which about four people go nuts and then slowly it grows and grows and grows and you feel totally disenfranchised and ostracised if you don't have an opinion on it.

ha ha, to be honest yes this is how i feel about a lot of the electrohouse - oh the burden!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:02 (eighteen years ago) link

well, not ostracised.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:02 (eighteen years ago) link

the three which have really, really stood out so far for me -

ellen allien & apparat, orchestra of bubbles
the knife, silent shout
booka shade, movements

alex smoke's paradolia also great, as well as the kiki, sascha funke and luciano mixes...

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:05 (eighteen years ago) link

no one should be surprised by the knife love! it pretty much ticks every ilm box conceivable - electro and forward-thinking, a bit indie and goth, some poppy hooks.

i'm still not sure whether i 'get' villalobos yet - when i like him i love him (bits of alcachofa, 'miami', 'ichso') but a lot of the time it's like...this is idm. i can't dance to this. i like it in the background but that is not a huge compliment!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I want to know what you think of The Knife Susan (I've found it perplexing, I still can't make my mind up about it when I should really know by now).

Nick, the reviews for Silent Shout have been incredibly consistent across the net. "ILM hivemind job" is way off.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:08 (eighteen years ago) link

eeemmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmwwwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaah OK! The Knife is mean trash!!!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:13 (eighteen years ago) link

haha 'mean trash' is an ace fence-sitting phrase! it could mean ANYTHING!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't feel disenfranchised by not liking something, or not finding it quite as exciting as some. ILM gets a bit too frothy sometimes but I much prefer that (It's a little more honest) to a load of "serious critics" trying to nail definitives onto music and seeing who is "right" 6 months later.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm hoping my deliberate efforts not to keep up this year for a bit (I need space!) explains why the list I was going to post is so depressingly ditto half this thread :|

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Fandango - I've seen The Knife get trashed in print. Probably only Q, so it almost doesn't matter at all, but it got really fucking mauled.

Lex stop generalising about what ILM's boxes are! Alex in NYC is as much ILM as you are!

X-post - agreed, Fandango, the excitement is good, but it can also grate because it leads to imbalance. I also worry that it hampers development of discussion about other music - like ILM is seen as a little electroclash + pop forum rather than a forum that could cover jazz + metal + folk + classical + indie + reggae + whatever.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Nick do you really think there's a Portishead vibe about "Silent Shout"? I thought that but I've been pretty much alone with that view so far TS: Portishead - Dummy vs. The Knife - Silent Shout

(also, agreed.. but ILM is fairly unbalanced already! but it's unbalanced in a good way. Stuff doesn't seem to get squeezed out to me).

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Nick do you really think there's a Portishead vibe about "Silent Shout"? can i answer? -YES.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:22 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't get what you mean. how is ILM 'electroclash'? i mean it's 2006, isn't it? and does it really matter how ILX is seen? ILX never had a mandate to be equitable and balanced! i mean, ILM's m.o. is crazy, lopsided, topsy-turvy opinions on pop music and other stuff--it never claimed to be anything else.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:23 (eighteen years ago) link

hey Fandango, nice to see you around these parts again...

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah it's just an honest reflection of people's preferences right now. It doesn't even seem like a majority thing to me (ILM currently feels like 2-300 people but only a handful saying anything).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:26 (eighteen years ago) link

ILM is fine...do you read other boards? Most, if not all (meaning I can't post anywhere eles) are getting worst and worst but ILM is here for more better than worst.

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm generalising as much as anyone else here, obv., to get a point across. I now ILM never had a mandate but I'm sure it seemed to be more diverse in the past - this thread and the cohesiveness of many of the lists is a case in point. People liking similar things isn't a problem, obviously, but... Like Steve says, there are 2-300 people here, but onyl a handful talk much, and so their opinions seem like consensus, because others aren't offered.

Most other boards are fucking shite, aye, especially compared to here. But here is not perfect either, and, you know, rage against the dying of the light and all that...

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:31 (eighteen years ago) link

hey Fandango, nice to see you around these parts again...

-- BeeOK

Wasn't aware I'd been away(!) but thanks :)

and thanks Susan for confirming my wonky judgement isn't so wrong.

haha, Nick.

The sun still has how many years before it burns out again? Phases and all that.

Fandango, been busy and don't open as many threads these days...

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:38 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost - Lex, what's the Sascha Funke mix like? The tracklisting looked dissapointingly generic minimal at first glance.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 3 April 2006 09:48 (eighteen years ago) link

fandango, I've only listened to the Sascha Funke mix once and it started out a bit slow but gets really, really ravey in the middle. it's quite poppy, too. the press release is a masterpiece of excitable broken english.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:18 (eighteen years ago) link

winning:
Morrissey - Ringleader of the Tormentors
Beth Orton - Company of Strangers
The Knife - Silent Shout

dissapointing:
Belle & Sebastian - Life Pursuit
The Streets - Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living

Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins: Rabbit Fur Coat

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:40 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't heard anything else mentioned on this thread, as I've recently retreated from the world. But the Cesium 137 (Metropolis electro-pop) and Damone (Island hair-metal teenpop) CDs are pretty good. Also, if Yolanda Perez's late last year CD counts, it contains some fantastic stuff. I can't wait for the Coup!

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Ghostface Killah - Fishscale

jonviachicago, Monday, 3 April 2006 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Fans of the Jenny Lewis and Neko Case records really ought to check out the Marit Larsen album. I think there's a good chance that they would be into it.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

hmm, i kinda expected this thread to have a lot more "oh wow i forgot about that, must check it out" moments - i want to hear the neko case, ghostface and yyys, but i knew about them already.

am surprised no one has mentioned shakira! i REALLY want to hear that.

i am on the fence about even caring about marit larsen. a lot of these swedish pop people have been awfully disappointing, do they not have basslines in that country? (the knife honourable exceptions.)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:55 (eighteen years ago) link

It's an ILM hivemind hype job.

As far as I know, any brainwashing with regards to The Knife is from "Heartbeats". So good a song.

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I forgot about Sibiylle Baier! That song "Tonight, when I come home from work..." is especially incredible.

C.D., Monday, 3 April 2006 16:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Lex, if you're coming to that Marit Larsen album expecting "basslines" and anything remotely resembling dance pop, you're going to be majorly disappointed. It's more like pop ballads and a sort of Norwegian bluegrass/country thing. It's very....rustic..at times. It's just really elegant pop music.

Not an album, but the A Sunny Day In Glasgow EP is pretty amazing.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Van Hunt, "On the Jungle Floor."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm really surprised by Jason Collett's "Idols of Exile" album. Some really beautiful moments, with some songs not sounding out of place on a BSS album. It's a grower for sure.

Tynan DeLong (TynanTynan!), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I just downloaded Don't Save Me and I think Mr. Perpetua may be on to something here. Instantly likable and very addictive! Now I need to hear more.

I have only found one good album this year: YMCK's Family Racing. But then I've been bugging on 8-Bit sounds since '86 - team them with rock and jazz rhythms and a chirpy female vocal and you can't lose.

I think the only 2006 release I've bought so far is Anthony Braxton Sextet's Victoriaville (2005), which is highly recommended to anyone who's been wanting to get back in touch with what Mr Braxton has been doing lately but has been scared off a bit by the "Ghost Trance" stuff - this is from his new "Accelerated Ghost Trance" music, which still has the seemingly endless 8th notes but also lots of solos and interaction between musicians.

Broken Boy Soldiers is a lot more enjoyable than the last White Stripes album. They sound like they are having a lot of fun on it. I'm going to use this phrase before a major music reviewer does "Like a 21st century Basement Tapes"

Kooks and Delays are worth listening to if you like that sought of thing.

I have only found one good album this year: YMCK's Family Racing. But then I've been bugging on 8-Bit sounds since '86 - team them with rock and jazz rhythms and a chirpy female vocal and you can't lose.

surprised that sway, c-mone and razor x productions haven't been mentioned yet - i haven't heard any of them in full but what i have heard has been ace, they're definitely on my must-hear list.

Lex, if you're coming to that Marit Larsen album expecting "basslines" and anything remotely resembling dance pop, you're going to be majorly disappointed. It's more like pop ballads and a sort of Norwegian bluegrass/country thing. It's very....rustic..at times. It's just really elegant pop music.

which marit larsen, i guess, is not. thanks for warning me. i have a low country tolerance level (limited pretty much to dolly parton and bubba sparxxx).

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 09:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT ABOUT THIS. I've only seen them the once back in 2004 and the only song that they played was "Magnifique", but yeah that's a pretty fitting title.

I suppose the only question is which classic stoner rock song they're going to choose to make awesome this time out. I'm sure there's some terrible Doors thing in dire need of the breath of life.

Also, I could have sworn I'd heard something about an album from the Pipettes and a new Eliot James-produced one from the Futureheads.

James, "Magnifique" is a cover, but I think it'll be on the next LP anyway.

Here are two songs that will almost certainly be on the record, though: -

Scissor Sisters "Can't Decide" (Live @ Mercury Lounge NYC 2005)

Scissor Sisters "Everybody Wants The Same Thing" (Live @ Live 8)

The Childballads have an EP coming out on Loog within the next month or two - it might not be an album this year, but I know the songs on the EP from their live shows, and they are just amazing. "Cheekbones" is the lead track, which some of you might know.

Anyway, I still have to say Orquesta Guayacan's Xtremo, even though I hesitate to mention it, since I don't necessarily see it appealing to non-salsa fans. There is a cumbia feel in a lot of it (they are from Colombia) and there are a couple decent tracks blending in reggaeton elements.

Capsule - FRUITS CLiPPER

3 listens and it's album of the year material. They started out as the next Pizzicato Five with more production fizz and have gone and made an electro-tech album which liberally fuses parts of today's techno with all 3 Daft Punk albums and the filter-disco likes of Moony and DJ Falcon. There are 4 instrumentals (for the purists) that will not sound out of place down Fabric and the pop songs are killer twee summer jams.

What is the new Vetiver like compared to the last?

like murderinging (modestmickey), Thursday, 25 May 2006 18:01 (eighteen years ago) link

so far:

Vetiver - To Find Me Gone. Start w/ thsi per request. Terririfc album. Doesn't deviate too much from the forst, maybe a bit more muscle. Great songs.

Espers II - Far and away my favorite of the year so far. Just a amazing, powerful album.

Cat Power - The Greatest.

Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit

Danielson - Ships

the new Vetiver has more of a Laurel Canyon feel to it than the first...flows a bit smoother, more memorable hooks...in places reminds quite a bit of Dylan's Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid soundtrack...high praise in my book...(I also found that Banhart track on the first LP a bit of a goof...you won't find such tomfoolery on the new one)...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 25 May 2006 18:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Nick, do pepople's picks still seem too similar at this point, because this thread seems all over the place to me, but since there's so much I don't recognize, maybe I'm missing patterns. But I mean, Chuck, Matt, Sundar, dance stuff, post-rock stuff, the best salsa album in several years (Michael Stuart), it's a pretty broad range.

How are people feeling about 2006 overall (musically speaking)? Isn't this the time of year that someone or other will usually say, "2006 sucks"? I am having a great time with music in 2006. It's not that I like a huge number of releases, but there have been enough that I've really liked a lot to keep me satisfied (and as usually there are others I haven't heard that at least look promising). Plus there have been surprises (belatedly discovering Shiina Ringo and Tokyo Jihen, Michael Stuart putting out a great album, and maybe Gnarls Barkley, to some extent).

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 28 May 2006 16:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Charalambides - The Vintage Burden -- Worth listening to and then buying, I'd say. One of Charalambides best.

re: vetiver
i'm just glad they finally recorded "You May Be Blue", though they don't extend it into its full hypnotic glory; I was waiting for it on the last EP. Haven't gotten through the whole thing yet.

I haven't heard much this year, mostly usual suspects; frontrunner's Belle and Sebastian, T.I. just a hair off that, that's all I see approaching greatness. Pleasant surprise: National Eye - Roomful of Lions

A lot of this thread is on Marit's new album. Well I listen to music all over the world as a USA DJ, and although fellow countrywoman Liv Kristine's ace solo album (perfect mix of Sixpence and Evanescence) is close, Marit's album remains my #1 release so far in 2006. It's absolutely brilliant. Quite simply, they need to release 'Only A Fool' in the US post haste. Sheryl Crow only wishes she could put out a tune like that...

Honorary mention goes to Sweden's wonderful I'm From Barcelona--very pleasant surprise there.

scottm_usadj, Thursday, 1 June 2006 02:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh...and I agree that Amy Diamond is amazing. Her debut had some great songs, but she's matured a ton for her new one, with a great ragtime feel to many of the songs. We do have a couple decent artists: Ditty Bops new one is good. Check them all out!

FYI: Denmark's MEW is on their way to a US release. It's about freaking time!

I'm astonished that Ten Silver Drops has only had one mention so far. It's by far the best I've heard (although that said I've only heard two songs from The Drift, the two 10-minute+ ones, and if the rest of the tracks are that good, especially as good as Clara, then that'll be seriously challenging for top spot...).
