I couldn't find the old thread so...

After 20-odd years a Virgin Megastore has finally got round to having a half-decent sale. So, got these:

Captain Beefheart - Magnetic Hands
The Electric Eels - Their Organic Majesty's Request
Angus Maclise - Brain Damage In Oklahoma City
Harry Nilsson - Pussycats

I probably could (and maybe should) have bought about a dozen other CDs but didn't want to be too greedy (or profligate).

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

a.b- nervous about Warner's buying Rykodisc and exiting eMusic?

bendy (bendy), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

My last purchase was:
Chet Baker - Sings It Could Happen To You
Guillemots - From The Cliffs
Ghostface - Fishscale

And today I bought Van Hunt's On The Jungle Floor, which is about 20 times better than I expected.

Jeff Reguil0n (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

YSI?

A Van That's Loaded With YSI? (noodle vague), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

I bought a cd copy of Fishscale. It's the first cd purchase I've made in a while. If I buy something, it's usually tracks from iTunes or Bleep.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

a.b- nervous about Warner's buying Rykodisc and exiting eMusic?

exactly.

a.b. (alanbanana), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

yep, picked up some Morphine and Ladytron for just that reason, too.

bendy (bendy), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Why do I still buy CDs? Usually it's because I'm at a gig and I want to support a band I like by purchasing their merch.

x-post, I ordered that Crazy Rhythms mix too. Good stuff.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Thursday, 6 April 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Bought on eBay this weekend: seven individual Cowboy Bebop soundtrack CDs, and the 4CD box that includes tracks not on the other seven discs plus a complete disc of liveage from the Seatbelts.

Planning to buy today or this weekend: the new Pink album.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

For those of you still buying physical discs, do you ever actually buy in stores? As I was browsing around the usual haunts in NY, I found myself picking up all these things that I want, carrying them around for a few minutes, and then thinking, "You know, if I'm going to buy this, I really should make sure it's not $2 cheaper on Amazon (etc) first."

And of course I never actually do that, because it's all about impulse buying. Down in Charlotte you never even see a lot of it.

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

my store buys are pretty much the result of idle browsing at this point, if I just have to have some specific album, I buy it online. I hardly ever buy 'new' either way, but when I do it's always online, as even Amoeba can't be counted on to have some new stuff in stock and it's a schlep. I still bought tapes into the mid-90's, so forgive me if I don't buy into the 'you STILL buy CDS?!!' thing for a couple of years yet.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 6 April 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

Most of my impulse buying is done either at used shops or record shows.

Chairman Doinel (Charles McCain), Thursday, 6 April 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

was tempted by the whole run of fania reissues on sale at virgin, but settled for ray barretto's acid (which is great).

ordered both volumes of the sci.fi.hi.fi mixes from soma; the ewan pearson one came this week (very nice), luciano tk.

ordered the bunnybrains box for like $9 on amazon. also recently bought the prince disc so i could review it. that's a likely sell-back.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 6 April 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

"Fishscale," of course
Yet another copy of "Forever Changes"
"Duke Ellington Presents the Dollar Brand Trio"

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 7 April 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

Out of curiousity, I bought the US release of Babyshambles and for once I should have listened to the reviews. It's pretty bad. Although there are two or three songs worth hearing twice.

I also picked up that Massive Attack comp and Hawkwind's Space Ritual.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 7 April 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

x-post. You name-dropper Dada! Actually the album's ace - never heard it at the time.

The Runaways CDs were secondhand, £5 each. Magnificent, both.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 April 2006 08:53 (nineteen years ago)

I was recently in a *mall* and a Sam Goody was going out of business (yay!) and everything was 60% off (double yay!). I bought the following, most of which I was surprised to find in a Sam Goody:

Dungen - Ta Det Lungt
The Juan McLean - Less Than Human (kinda meh, if you ask me)
Townes Van Zandt - Be Here to Love Me film soundtrack
Konono No. 1
Seu Jorge - whatever that album is called. Kinda meh also
Wayne Shorter Quartet - Breaking the Sound Barrier

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sitting here regretting all those albums I didn't buy in that Virgin shop when I had the chance!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

Go back!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

I will, but some bastard will have bought all the good stuff!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

Picked up the 2nd mazzy star album, which I used to like a lot a few years ago. Didn't like it much anymore, apart from a couple of tracks. It's a bit soporific.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ifd it was TCR, they were still there yesterday evening.

Unless they were different ones to the ones I saw.

If it was a different Virgin, I might go there too.

I have been investigating how much stuff could be sold for a profit.

I would be quid in (singular).

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

You mean the Sunburned Hand of the Man and Jackie-O Motherfucker albums, those 5 or 6 Hafler Trio albums, the other Electric Eels' album, "Hairway to Steven", the Nick Nicely album, the Gene Clark albums etc etc etc were still there?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like you've got a better branch of virgin that either of the ones near me.

Might pick up a copy of "hairway to steven" tonight if I can find one anywhere.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

I bought the new Neko Case record yesterday. I don't buy many CDs but I don't do any fire-sharing or downloading either.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

Pharoah Sanders - Black Unity
Krzysztof Penderecki - St Luke Passion

Omar (Omar), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

>You mean the Sunburned Hand of the Man

Never heard of it

>and Jackie-O Motherfucker albums,

Yes, one at least.

>those 5 or 6 Hafler Trio albums,

Never heard of it

>the other Electric Eels' album,

I think so, but don't quote me

>"Hairway to Steven",

Yes, three or four copies at least.

>the Nick Nicely album,

Never heard of him

>the Gene Clark albums etc etc etc were still there?

The Raven compilation (also a Byrds one) and a thing of demos which looks a bit Nick Faldo, yes.

Also Acid Mothers Temple and Cocteau Twins Japanese imports, and a whole rack I didn't even look at.

This was about 6.30 - 7.00 last night.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

Went in the branch in Croydon last night - Ariel Pink, Thermals, Michael Yonkers, American Analog Set, Wolf Eyes, masses of stuff I'd paid full price for in the past.

Wandering Boy Poet, Friday, 7 April 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

xpost Pash. Yeah, I had that and sold it. I have a feeling that I'd really like it now. Soporific - yes. But there's one biting bluesy thing one there isn't there? They should do more of that.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Are Virgin having difficulties, or was the Reading closure a one-off?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

How much were the Sunburned Hand of the Man and Jackie-O Motherfucker albums?
The only Virgin near me is in Glasgow(ie 30 mins by train away)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

There's a load of stuff for £3.99, but it looks like whatever they'd got in the shop that they couldn't shift, so there's no guarantee they'd have the same stuff in Glasgow*.

*where I suspect there are more nutters who buy this stuff.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Here's a random (i.e. from memory) selection of stuff I've bought this year that isn't related to my project. Now that the project's nearly done, I may even get round to listening to most of 'em!

James Brown - Live At The Apollo
Alizée - Gourmandises
Alizée - Mes Courants Electriques
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Peter Gabriel - 1, 2 and 3 (remasters)
Talking Heads - Remain In Light (remaster)
Byrne & Eno - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (remaster)
Scott Walker - Climate of Hunter
V/A - Sixties Girls Volume 1 (French ye-ye pop comp)
Sing-Sing - Sing-Sing and I
Holden - Pedrolira
Holden - Chevrotine
Fugu - As Found
Aaliyah - Age Ain't Nothing But A Number
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Sway - This Is My Demo
The Knife - Silent Shout

(and no doubt a few others)

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost) The Virgin in Glasgow is shit tho isn't it? I mean, so is the one in London at TCR but it obv. had good stock at one point (i.e. the stuff it's selling off for £3.99 now). I imagine, Virgin are having the same problems selling music CDs as every other retail outlet - so expect even less emphasis on music in future and more shop closures?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

Virgin are having the same problems selling music CDs as every other retail outlet

true enough, I'm sure, but going on the difference between the branches of virgin and the branches of HMV at gateshead metrocentre and newcastle, they're not exactly trying very hard, are they? Virgin is piss poor, HMV is about 1,000,000 times better, judging by these branches.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

Babybird - The Original Lo-Fi

6 CDs for £3.99.

I wonder if it is any good.

That all those home demo albums he did? I liked a number of them, still have 'em around, or at least five of them. I might have six. The full band stuff was nowhere near as good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

(Xpost) HMV is much better full stop. That's what i meant by my comment that "After 20-odd years a Virgin Megastore has finally got round to having a half-decent sale" because HMV have them often (tho less than they did)

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

As Mitya hinted upthread, things need to be really cheap in the shops for them to be cheaper than Amazon used & new,, generally. (I've started using .com which tends to have lower prices, and postage to the UK is

Tim (Tim), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Which is why I only ever seem to buy stuff in sales

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'm saying that most of the sales end up more expensive, though! I don't even look at the full price racks. High-street record shopping has become a dispiriting experience. So I end up ibeing interested only in the few remaining quid / 2quid bins. And in big piles of dirty vinyl.

Amsterdam is realy good for very cheap 70s c'n'w vinyl, I've found to my intense delight.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

I keep a big wish list on Amazong, and checking through to see what's on cheaply today is a really good way to puntuate a painful day at work.

Two or three CDs a week (haha yes only 2 or 3 doctor, really) and the chances are pretty high of there being a little gift to be unwrapped when I get home knackered and miserable on any given weekday. And I can use Saturday for something else.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

The good thing about buying things in sales of course is that you take more risks, and could you really get 6 Hafler Trio albums for under £25 on Amazon?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

Could I? Probably not. But there's risky and there's risky, if you know what I mean.

(Haha it doesn't get much riskier than buying the recommendations from the rolling country thread!)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Well I'm not going to buy them either!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Bought the new Television Personalities on vinyl while in Boston a few weeks ago. Listened to side one and it was so awful that I can't bring myself to flip it over and listen to the other side.

kwhitehead (stephen schmidt), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

:(

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Ned, the home demos. I think the sixth CD is a "bonus" album called The Black Album, which was compiled in 2002.

Also at TCR - Popol Vuh. I forgot that one earlier.

Great thing about shops - some of them let you take it back if you "don't like it". I realise my enthusiasm for this is a sign of mental disorder more than anything else.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 7 April 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

many xposts to Rickey -

Secret Treaties is the first B.O.C. album I have gotten based on Myonga's rave reviews on some other thread. I will get Tyranny next if you like it that much.

I also bought the Talking HEads Remain In Light remaster, but I got the British "regular CD with bonus DVD" version instead of the American Dualdisc crap (I have no desire to test my various systems' compatibility with those things).

sleeve (sleeve), Friday, 7 April 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Fugu - As Found

where can one buy the fugu album? or when you say buy is that code for something else?

keyth (keyth), Friday, 7 April 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

The Virgin in Glasgow is shit tho isn't it? I

Theres two remember. And both are shite!
HMV is much better. But I tend to shop in Monorailmusic and Avalanche Records. Missing is only second hand stuff now, so cheaper buying that stuff new round the corner in FOPP.
Do Borders ever restock up stuff? I don't thing they've ever restocked back catalogue stuff since the shop opened.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 7 April 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Placebo- Once More With Feeling
Franz Ferdinand- You Could Live So Much Better
Pat Metheny- First Circle
Joshua Redman- Momentum, Elastic
Lonnie Smith- Turning Point
Eberhardt Weber- Pendulum
Porcupine Tree- In Absentia, Dead Wings
Bill Frisell- East West

I think this is everything I have bought for the past few weeks. I had First Circle on vinyl that had got kind of warped. I liked them all.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 7 April 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

Got my big box o'Cowboy Bebop in the mail today. Woo hoo.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 8 April 2006 00:25 (nineteen years ago)

Fugu - As Found
where can one buy the fugu album? or when you say buy is that code for something else?

You can only buy it in France (and probably some of that country's neighbours) and Japan at the moment, keyth. But a wider release later this year is planned, I gather.

In the meantime you can hear a couple of songs on the website of the label that released the CD in France:
http://www.thirdsiderecords.net/

I gather there may be some mp3s at Fugu's myspace page as well:
http://www.myspace.com/fugumusic

Hope that helps. It's a good record, I think you'll like it if you liked the first one, though the new one has lots more guitar on it, more Beatles-esque indie pop.

I haven't bought any albums recently that killt me, but man, the Home Movies, Vol. 2 DVD, esp. the beginning of "History" -- where George Washington, Pablo Picasso and Annie Oakley team up to annihilate the human race -- is RIOTOUS with a capital US.

Home Movies? Please to tell more.

It's about as good-natured an Adult Swim-series as possible; it revolved around the lives of three overly precocious kids (shades of Peanuts) and the ultra-ambitious videocam movies they made; it shared technology (Squigglevision), writing and voice talent with Dr.Katz.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 9 April 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

dada go back and buy the nick nicely album for god's sake. otherwise you're letting everyone down!!

It was gone :( as was most of the other stuff I was regretting not buying but, fear not, I got these instead:

John Cage, Piano Works 2 - Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano
Henry Flynt, Graduation and Other New Country and Blues Music
Funkadelic, Cosmic Slop
Pierre Henry, Futuristies
Hans-Joachim Irmler, Lifelike

I recommend London jazzers to get yerselves down to the Virgin in Piccadilly, SHITLOADS of CDs, and I mean shitloads.

But are they all shit?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 08:31 (nineteen years ago)

Some absolutely killer stuff in this Virgin sale. I was visiting friends in Chester this weekend and picked up the following for £3.99 each:

Mummies - Death By Unga Bunga
Bill Wells, Annie Whitehead et al - Pick Up Sticks
Maher Shalal Hash Baz - Blues du jour
Jonathan Richman - To Be Loved...
Impossible But True: The Kim Fowley Story
James Chance - Irresistible Impulse (that's the four cd set for 3.99!!!)

I was most chuffed with my purchases, especially as my friend's one and half year old LOVED the Mummies and was dancing around to them. What a cool kid!

stew!, Tuesday, 11 April 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

But are they all shit?

Well obviously there is a lot of shit but it looks to me that they're just offloading most of their stock so the proportion of good things in there is about the same as you'd find in the racks

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 08:50 (nineteen years ago)

... in future I think they will be concentrating more on the Jamie Cullum end of the market

there's no guarantee they'd have the same stuff in Glasgow*.
*where I suspect there are more nutters who buy this stuff.

Heh, that's what I was thinking. I got lucky in Chester! Loads of Funkadelic, Scott Walker, Jonathan Richman, Calexico, Teenage Fanclub, Stevie Wonder and Neil Young digipack reissues etc.

I'll investigate the Glasgow stores but the Buchanan St branch has to be one of the most obnoxious on the planet, blaring out horrible music at arena concert level volumes. The staff in there must go nuts.

They is so square in Chester!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

why does anyone still buy CDs? A: cos it takes forever to download even a single track on soulseek, like 10 to 15 mins (even now I've got a broadband connection) and if you leave it to make a cup of tea or survey the damage the kids and their friends have wreaked downstairs it fails.

last CD buys were Capt Beefheart's Safe as Milk and The Who Sellout with extra tracks. Am still digging Melancholia very much, a maudlin melody on 2 chords a semitone apart with some wonderful who anarchy at the end.

dr x o'skeleton, Tuesday, 11 April 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't bought any albums recently that killt me, but man, the Home Movies, Vol. 2 DVD, esp. the beginning of "History" -- where George Washington, Pablo Picasso and Annie Oakley team up to annihilate the human race -- is RIOTOUS with a capital US.

That episode just sort of towers over everything else though, doesn't it? The show as a whole is good, solid stuff, but "History" is just unadulterated genius back to back. Especially Mr.Paws and the hot dogs.

My haul from the Perth branch of Virgin:

Can - Tago Mago
Godspeed... - Lift Your Fists...
Memory Band - s/t
Stephen Malkmus - Face The Truth
Richmond Fontaine - Post To Wire
Bonnie Prince Billy - I See A Darkness + Ease Down The Road
Beck - Guero (Limited Edition CD/DVD set)

Blonde Redhead - Misery Is A Butterfly

And from my old place of employment, the Dundee branch:

James Roberts - Everthing You Know Is Right
Minus The Bear - Highly Refined Pirates

To be fair there wasn't much interesting stock to sell off in the Dundee branch when i worked there as we'd moved store and a lot of the long-unsold stuff was sent back to the warehouse.

I've also spent far too much money on other stuff. Bad me!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

The magnificence of the Virgin sale even spread as far as the Bluewater branch! I picked up the Alice Coltrane comeback record, a couple of ECM things (Motian, Kancheli), a Sandy Denny remaster, one of those never-reduced Bill Frisell Nonesuch CDs in a nice slipcase and some Dutilleux orchestral music - all £3.99 each.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

man, there sure was a load of "alternative" shite (read: stuff I'd never heard of by bands even ILM has probably never once mentioned) in the £3.99 clearance bin in the Piccadilly Circus branch of Virgin. I assume a lot of it is stock they inherited from Tower. the dance/soul/hip hop/reggae bin downstairs was only marginally better.

I found about 10 things altogether that I was mildly interested in, and might have grabbed on a day when I was keen to hear some new things. yesterday wasn't one of those days tho'

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

I think we got to the Virgin sale a bit too late - probably most of the best stuff had gone already by the time I got there, didn't see any bargains like James Chance box sets for £3.99!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 09:35 (nineteen years ago)

Stuff picked up at the market in Darlington yesterday for £19, most of which went on the Hawley CD.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 09:52 (nineteen years ago)

A Kenny Loggins record for children, some death metal that was stickered to "retail at 6.66 euro or local equivalent", a band called Fuck Off Machete...such wonders in the Virgin sale.

What I actually bought from the ex-Tower store was both Fat Cat split-12" comps (oh, how I traipsed from Rough Trade store to Rough Trade store looking for the original pressings back in the day), a Bill Wells/Barbara Morgenstern thing and a Call And Response six-tracker. I dithered over but ultimately discarded a Bob Ostertag metal tin CD and some tempting Rune Grammofon and Winter&Winter stuff upstairs.

That's enough new records for now, ta.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

Are Fuck Off Machete Mexican or something?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

No, I am thinking of Control Machete. Silly me.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 06:54 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck Off Machete - I think they're from Glasgow aren't they? Certainly sounds like they could be with that name:

"Did he huv a chib oan him?"
"Aye, a big fuck off machete"

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I'm pretty sure they're Scottish. There was another death metal act whose name I can't remember but their CD made me laugh out loud simply because they had a PO Box in New Ferry, CH63. Wirral - the Peninsula of Pain.

What with these uncharacteristic splurges and JtN/Koogy blitzing me with comps recently, suddenly the 2GB on my space-age Walkman seems rather feeble. Still, you can't listen to it all at once, can you?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

My device has become Koogied up too. But what joy!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

The Virgin sale spreads even further, I got the following in Belfast. £3.99 each
East River Pipe 'Garbageheads on Endless Stun'
Laura Nyro "New York Tenderberry'
Cocteau Twins 'Milk and Kisses'
Mark E Smith 'Pander! Panda! Panzer!'
Gallon Drunk 'Bear me Away' 2 CD comp
Nico 'Innocent and Vain -an intro to..'
Les Savy Fav 'Go Forth'
James Yorkston ' Just Beyond the River'
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds ' The Good Son'
Cranes 'Forever' + 'Particles and Waves'.

There were loads more that I had previously bought and a large dose of Southern/ Dischord stuff too (Numbers, Black Eyes, Karate etc).
It is surprising to see such a varied sale when HMV seem to have the same stuff all the time these days.

Jonathan G (Jonathan G), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

OK, the splurge is over. Wasted practically all of my lunch hour caning the £3.99 racks at the big TCR/Oxford Rd Virgin, ended up putting most of my maybes back (Doris Day late-'40s rarities, mid-'80s John Surman, some Winter&Winter stuff, etc), just holding on to another Call And Response LP and a Jessica Bailiff thing

Went upstairs to see if they had any Panini stickers and OH NO.. Nathan Barley and 24 Hour Party People cheap on DVD!

Enough, already.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

How much is Nathan Barley, Michael?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 20 April 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, it was Winds Take No Shape. I was listening to it this morning on the bus next to a man who had exactly the same model Samsung MP3 player as me. I bet he wasn't listening to Call And Response. I bought the Tiger Teeth EP a few days earlier; Pam and Ava had "a dance party" to that yesterday afternoon apparently.

Nathan Barley is £8.99. I know, it's not quite "clearance" pricing, is it? I bet they're giving them away next week.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 20 April 2006 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

Emily B (Emily B), Friday, 30 June 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

This pile of records cost me $50 TOTAL at the Thing in Greenpoint today, the most records I've bought in a day in several years:

"Bits and Pieces 1985" 12-inch
Black Sun "Disco Heat"/"Big Money" 12-inch (When I bought this I was confusing it with some obscure gay disco classic by Black Devil that was reissued a few years ago on Rephlex, but maybe it's good anyway)
Captain Sky *The Adventures of Captain Sky* LP
Chic *Take It Off* LP
Cold Blood *Cold Blood* LP
Stanley Clarke *School Days* LP
Fast Eddie *Most Wanted* LP
Freddie Fender *Before the Next Teardrop Falls* LP
Nona Hendryx *Nona* LP
Imagination *In the Heat of the Night* LP
James Gang *Yer' Album* LP
Love/Hate *Wasted in America* CD
Marcus *Marcus* LP (never heard of this before; it just looked kinda cool, but when I got home I looked it up in *The International Encyclopedia of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal*, and it turns out it's a lost heavy metal classic from 1976 by a band with a black singer -- the book, written 23 years ago, already calls the band "mysterious", so they're even more mysterious now, I guess; the book also calls the singer "coloured," yikes; apparently the authors were British.)
Midnight Star *No Parking on the Dance Floor* LP
Mtume *Theatre of the Mind* LP
Juice Newton *Juice* LP
Return to Forever *Romantic Warrior* LP
Shrapnel *Shrapnel* EP (in horrible condition, but one of the first metal records I ever got paid to write about, a million years ago)
Stargard *The Changing of the Gard* LP
Stealers Wheel *Stuck in the Middle With You: The Best Of* LP
Ten City *Foundation* CD
Tesla *The Great Radio Controversy* CD
Triumph *Classics* CD
Trouble Funk *Say What!: Live in London* LP
Universal Robot Band "Freak With Me" 12-inch
Wee Papa Girl Rappers *Be Aware* LP

And shit, I just noticed that Shrapnel's singer is Dave Wyndorf, long before Monster Magnet. So that's another big deal, maybe.

How's the "Girlfriend" reissue? I almost bought that.

Marmot 4-Tay: what those guyz make music 4. (marmotwolof), Monday, 17 July 2006 05:32 (nineteen years ago)

It's terrific. I only have Altered Beast and never got around to buying Girlfriend. Downloaded two tracks of the reissue from a blog recently and saw it in the shop a week later. Mid-price! Definitely worth buying :)

willem -- (willem), Monday, 17 July 2006 05:54 (nineteen years ago)

What's on the bonus disc? The Good Friend stuff?

I'm not that big a fan but my wife loves this album. We already have the Good Friend CD so probably won't need this reissue unless there's other goodies on it.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

carpettes - small wonder 7"

buff medways - medway wheelers 7"

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

Colonel - yes, the extra disc is Goodfriend so you probably don't need the reissue. Tacked to the end of Girlfriend, however, are three tracks that were available on the Japanese version of the original album... (having checked that, I see those tracks were also on the "Girlfriend" single, so your girlfriend (couldn't resist) might already have those as well).

willem -- (willem), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

A blue vinyl bootleg Mudhoney 7" featuring a bogus "demo" of Touch Me I'm Sick and a legit (fucking KICK-ASS) demo of Mudride. Five bucks.

Some retarded fucking Bloc Party 12" on Dim Mak. Bought it for a the Diplo remix, which -- uncharacteristically -- BLOWS. Garbage. $2.

That old Franz Ferdinand Fallen 12" with the Justice remix. While that 2nd FF LP is straight shit(e), the "ruined" remix fucking RULES. Why no goddam rmx instrumental, people?

Two different versions of the Justice Waters of Nazareth 12". An English version on Ed Bangers, and an American release courtesy of the fine young white boys at Vice. Best shit I've heard in ages. (And, yeah, I know EXACTLY how far behind the curve I am. Fuck that in the mouth.) $12 total.

Volumes 2 and 6 of "The Rub". Dumb-ass mashups. Some great, some crap. The primary lesson learned is that I don't ever need to hear anything Walk Like and Egyptian-related again for the rest of my goddam life.

Some other 12"s and stuff. Various sub-Justice stuff on Ed Bangers. A killer Funk Train edit. A weird/bad/good "Crazy" remix.

That second Burzum record...

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yah, and the new CSS LP on Sub-Pop.

Damn, I love this record! Play it all the damn time. Yah, sure, it's stupid and obvious and cruddy and all that, but it gets in my head and fucks the nodes all to oblivion. I like it. It makes me happy.

What with this, and Comets on Fire and the allegedly upcoming Pissed Jeans record, this is first time I've actually felt excited about anything on Sub Pop in, oh, what? ... like a decade?!? Maybe more...

Chuck, didn't you review that Dion LP as a reissue in Creem around 1987?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 01:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, maybe! Wow, you have a better memory than I do. Was that the same album?? I have no idea, to be honest. But yeah, I definitely remember writing about *some* live Dion & the Belmonts album. (So here's a good question: Was the MSG gig and album before or after the Dion-less *Cigars Acapella Candy,* which also came out in '72, and which was I one of Greil Marcus's top ten albums of the '70s?)

Prins Thomas vs. Blackbelt Andersen - Juling I Ringen EP
Danielle Baldelli presents Phobos 2006
Loco Dice / Villalobos - Green and Blue
Two cheap 90's Detroit-ish techno comps
Berlin Unwrapped - A goofy compilation from '96 that focuses on the Love Parade and comes with a CD-ROM vid in 256 colors (anyone remember those?) and a book full of pictures of people in silver lamé outfits. Has a really awful track by Ellen Allien.

Can anyone recommend record stores I should check out in Tokyo? I've searched around, but all signs seem to point to Tower Records, Disk Union, and the cluster of shops in Shibuya, which are ok, but I imagine I can do better.

fffnnnsss,

No, but related. Around a year ago Manifest almost closed down but a new owner bought it up. The old owner started this new store called "Lunchbox Records" on Central Ave, right around Thomas St which is hipster central in Charlotte, home of the Penguin, Dish, Thomas St Tavern, Sadu, that popular tattoo place, etc. It's much smaller, but the store is generally oriented towards more independent music.

(also bought the book Spreadin' Rhythm Around: Blac Popular Songwriters, 1880-1930 by David a Jansen & Gene Jones on this trip)

Interesting book. I wrote about it some on the 2005 Rolling Country thread:

I have been busy reading a new book about black songwriters 1860-1930 myself; it's fascinating so far in its depection of the minstrel/death-ballad/coon-song era(s), but not in front of me and I forget the authors' names.

======
The book I wrote about a couple posts above is actually *Spreadin' Rhythm Around: Black Popular Songwriters, 1880-1930* by David A Jasen and Gene Jones; I'm up through Bert Williams now, though, and I'm starting to lose interest in it a little. (Also, what I mistakingly call the "murder ballad" era up above -- late 1880s/early 1890s, I guess; I forget the precise time coordinates, but somewhere in there, once Tin Pan Alley and sheet music started displacing the traveling blackface tent shows that stopped at every town with a train station -- is actually refered to as the "tearjerker" era in the book. *Could* include murder songs, but also pretty much anything based on a sad newspaper article, like for instance a baby drowning in a bathtub. The beginning the end, the authors say, of American popular music losing its full dependency on European melodic structure, and the immediately subsequent coon-song era, despite relying on blatantly racist lyrics by definition, would instigate the emphasis on 4/4 beat that would soon result in ragtime, cakewalks, jazz, blues, and so on.)

RE: Spreadin' Rhythm Around

I had to stop reading the book on the trip as I was too concerned that I was glossing over much of the info.

Now that I'm home, I've set up shop with a highlighter and my entire music collection, trying to decipher what I need to fill in the gaps, what stuff needs to be recontextualized, etc.

This book has given me direction with my pre-30's collecting/understanding.

np: Koby Israelite [John Zorn composer]: Orobas: Book of Angels Vol.4

Oh yes, very nice: as I had suspected, based on brief samples, the sound is often more middle eastern than East European. Really kind of authentically middle eastern at moments in a way that very little I've heard by Zorn has been (not that I assume he has tried and failed or anything).

I like He Poos Clouds too. I think it's going to take several more listens to get more of a handle on it. I need to listen at least once with the lyric sheet in front of me.

All relatively recent Arabic releases, though one is an album of covers of classics

Ahlam: Al Thokol San'a (Listening to this now and it's mostly really good, especially the more purely khaleeji tracks. I think the use of clarinet on some tracks is a little innovative for khaleeji music.)
Mohammed Abdo: Al'Amaken - Jeddah Ghair 2005 (the most famous living khaleeji singer--I think he must put out half a dozen releases a year, including live recordings, and not including all the bootlegs I know are out there)
Fella: Badr 14 (Algerian singer I discovered on youtube, poppier than what I usually go for in Arabic music, but she's a good singer and I know like at least one song on this. Despite her Algerian nationality, the songs she sings are more Egyptian or Lebanese in style, at least from what I've heard.)
Fella: Sahrat Tarab - Live (Covers of classics originally recorded by people like Oum Kalthoum, Fairouz, Abdel Halim Hafez, Mohammed Abdel Wahab (I think), etc.)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, you know what's missing from the Mohammed Abdo stuff I've been getting on CD? It's those ridiculously fast rhythmic lines played on doumbeks (I think) on some of the live recordings I have on cassette. This stuff all seems to have the big galumping khaleeji rhythms, which are nice. They can be faster than this though, I think. Anyway, it wouldn't surprise me if those rapid-fire rhythms were borrowed from Syrian and Lebanese music, but his singing worked perfectly well with them. Yup, that's what I think.

I think the use of clarinet on some tracks is a little innovative for khaleeji music.

I keep saying "clarinet" but I think it's really a duduk, which is still unusual. (I wonder if Ahlam has some Armenian ancestry.)

Dave Fox: Dedication Suite (2005)

I haven't heard the whole thing yet. It's a modern classical/free improv. set with strong hints of gamelan and gamelan-influenced western music (particularly Cage's prepared piano work and Nancarrow's player piano pieces). I think the piano is prepared some of the time (judging by the ribbon through piano strings on the cover, and also by what I'm hearing). Anyway, he pulls from a wide range of modern classical approaches to keyboard. There are also some percussive sounds that don't sound like they are coming from a piano, but maybe they are. There's not much information on the CD about what's being used or much of anything. I like the batting back and forth between seemingly unstructured percussive sounds, brief repetitive rhythmic passages, and old school modern classical piano.

R_S (RSLaRue), Saturday, 30 September 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

This is how his label describes it: "Dave Fox's solo recording of grand piano improvisations, using both conventional and extended techniques, leads the listener into new sonic realms that both challenge and entice appreciation from his audience. One can detect numerous influences, from the masters of classical piano literature, like Beethoven, Bartok, Charles Ives, and George Crumb, to jazz and avant garde greats like Irene Schweizer, Abdullah Ibrahim, and Cecil Taylor, but the key import of this release is that this recording integrates these influences into a well-presented set of pieces, wholly Dave's own, through which many new sounds are provided for the exceptional listener. This is an excellent-sounding disc!"

Some cheap Krautrock, bought in Paisley surprisingly:

Agitation Free - 2nd (disappointed with this, sort of jammy/jazzy instrumental rock, nice fluid guitar in places but bog standard earthbound 70s rhythm section. Quite nice but really nothing special)

Cornucopia - Full Horn (ugly, lumpy prog rock with outbursts of dissonant weirdness - which makes it sound a bit like Van der Graaf, which makes it sound far better than it is! Again, it's pretty underwhelming)

... to be honest, I don't know why I even bother buying Krautrock anymore, I think I've got all the good stuff by now.

I'm not entirely sure about this Tego album, but I do like his old-school salsa song "Chango Blanco," which has been getting good reviews from salseros all over. (It also segues nicely into the next song, via the flute they have in common. Well, I don't really know if it's the same flute, but it feels like a connection anyway.) I like the second song hear, the one with the chipmunk voices. The salsaton reworking of "Lloraras" by Oscar D'Leon is pretty unnecessary. It's already a very heavily played song, and this is not as good as existing version. Too bad they didn't put together something new. It's not bad, it's just a little too there.

I have banned myself from taking things back to shops now.

Anyway, I wonder if this will result in any amazing bargains:

On 3 January 2007, W K Dawson & N J Dargan were appointed Joint Administrators and now manage the affairs, business and property of Music Zone Services Limited and Music Zone Holdings Limited. The Joint Administrators contract as agents of the companies only and without personal liability

Oh Monsieur WK Dawson, You Are Spoiling Us! thread ahoy?

Music Zone does tend to be kind of lame, though. Didn't you used to have to apply for some kind of spurious membership card to buy anything? Still, perhaps some bargains to be had...

I think the card system was MVC or something like that. But, yes, it is lame, on the whole.

Well I just spent $77 and I hope you're happy.

Madonna - Madonna
Suicide - first album
Low - new album, Drums & Guns
Lily Allen - Alright, Still (of course)
Monks - S/T (of course)

And why isn't Grinderman out???

I forgot to look for the Dream Syndicate but I like that, too.
