Cassie: The new Ciara?

Well, I was bored and was flicking through radio stations and I heard this really spacy, sort of Gary Numan-esque r&b song. Way awesome. So I did some resarch, and it's called "Me & U" by this newcome named Cassie.

http://www.cassieworld.com/

The other songs on her site are great as well. Her voice is pretty thin, but the production quite great.

i got home from a party last night at 3 am after having sold $140 worth of found books back the college bookstore with friends and smoking weed for hours, going first to a party that was remotely broadcast live on the radio, and then to see the (excellent) david bowie cover band, and 'me & u' sounded great.

Yeah, when I first heard this on the radio...I told a car full of friends to all shut the fuck up or get out.
Great tune.

beautiful - when that hooky synth in "me and you" kicks in, it reminds me of the welcome back kotter theme.

"Me and U" is really good but I feel like it's still kind of a pale imitation of "Don't Cha."

It is, but it's also awesome. And as Dontcha is now Heineken, Me and U will suffice.

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 11:08 (eighteen years ago) link

one month passes...
Surprisingly, the entire album is excellent (and really short)! She doesn't have a very strong voice, but she's got tons of charisma, and the production is all-around excellent. I hope she stays around for a while.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 3 August 2006 07:01 (eighteen years ago) link

I hope this is good! The bass in the chorus of "Me & U" is the best sound ever.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 07:11 (eighteen years ago) link

i'd love to hear the album - i'm completely obsessed with cassie's voice right now. she goes to such an extreme of eschewing melisma, there's this incredibly alluring combination of blankness/sadness/dread/disinterest, shifting between these according to the lyrics, which she enunciates really precisely.

i really love the follow-up single too, 'long way 2 go' - "i know you wanna meet me/cos your girlfriend wanna be me"

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:29 (eighteen years ago) link

this thread needs to be a lot longer than it is!

each summer for the past few years, there's been one sparse, simple, understated, almost nothingy r&b single amidst the massive summer bangers - 'never leave you', 'move ya body', 'pon de replay'. obviously 'me & u' is a lot darker (she sounds almost scared in it, like she's spent so much time planning this bedroom liaison with military precision - clipped vocals, everything rigorously in place - and now she doesn't quite know what to do)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:31 (eighteen years ago) link

It's my second favourite song of the year.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 08:34 (eighteen years ago) link

"I hope this is good! The bass in the chorus of "Me & U" is the best sound ever."

Er... Bass? And just when I've been remarking on it as yet another example of an excellent pop/r'n'b record that works despite the absence of bass! ;) It's suggestively empty, airy, and delicately balanced - with an incredible openness, like the r'n'b equivalent of a Zen rock garden. But all with no integrating bass, with the exception of the booming kick drum. Are there different versions / mixes about? Or am I just being obtuse in not acknowledging that synth-cello line in the chorus as 'bass'?

(The clip is most excellent, by the way. Just her dancing about in front of a mirror. Simplicity, perfection. With Cassie gratuitously dousing herself in a bottle of water somewhere towards the end ;) )

Catherine Ryan (and so this is catherine), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah I think I must mean the synth-cello - I've only seen the clip and heard it on the radio, and in those mediums that resonant low synth is like an evil techstep record.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:47 (eighteen years ago) link

It's precisely because there is no bass in the record otherwise that these bits work so effectively. Such creeping menace!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 August 2006 09:54 (eighteen years ago) link

it's the same synth-cello beloved of scott storch in 50 cent productions and so on (where it's kind of used as this "hard gangsta" signifier), except with those it's seamlessly integrated into all these other shiny sounds, on 'me & u' there's virtually nothing else which amps up the dread even more.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 10:09 (eighteen years ago) link

This girl is all frosting, no cake.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:09 (eighteen years ago) link

I like the thought of the almost melisma-less Cassie as being 'cool', in contrast to the hotness and chaos that edge-of-ignition warbles like Beyonce's "Deja Vu" have. Whereas that style is delivered in count-down-to-blast-off mode, Cassie's vocals are just so icy and still.

The links with 'Move Your Body', 'Never Leave You' are OTM. I wonder what other songs belong in this chain/constellation?

BTW - she is frost-y, not frost-ing! Who wants cake, anyway? ;) Give me icing any day.

Catherine Ryan (and so this is catherine), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:10 (eighteen years ago) link

yes it's the stillness which is so compelling - it's a real rarity in r&b.

cassie's total ice. the only vocal comparison which really fits is teairra mari, but teairra's icy cos she's angry, and she's definitely not blank or disinterested.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not disputing that she's doing something wildly different from everyone else and that's what everyone is finding intriguing about her; my only point is that, for me, a little bit goes a very very very VERY long way.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I like the second single even more.

The album's very short -- 35 mins, a la all those Carter Administration Def Jam albums, and no trace of Diddy -- and very top-heavy.

Luis Skank Bloc Polonia (Andy_K), Thursday, 3 August 2006 11:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Tim: Do yourself a favor and listen on headphones/anything where you can get a good stereo effect. It becomes 10 times better. Each sound is isolated in its own little pocket, never interacting with anything else in the song. It's like piling on a couple more bagfulls of ice.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes I agree with that. "Don't Cha" isn't even the best Pussycat Dolls single.

I think this is maybe the most severe psuedo-crunk R&B track - "Oh" is its only challenger, and I think this sounds even emptier than that, though "Oh" does have some raw blemished grunt in its favour.

I may never understand what it is people like about this kind of flat disengagement.

I also may never understand how an artist or songwriter goes about deciding whether a song will be a "You" track or a "U" track. I really wish people would stop doing the latter.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Saturday, 5 August 2006 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

"I can kind of picture Paul Buchanan's voice working over "Me & You"'s icy backdrop"

Surely it's only a matter of time before Junior Boys release a cover of "Me & U".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:19 (eighteen years ago) link

"I also may never understand how an artist or songwriter goes about deciding whether a song will be a "You" track or a "U" track."

I think it gets sent to a special committee. It's tried out in various focus groups. And then they just pull one out of a hat and go with it.

Catherine Ryan (and so this is catherine), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:23 (eighteen years ago) link

For those of you who are interested in such details, the real simple falling down blip line in "Me & U" is in the clave rhythm.

This track is good - very good; stunning, in fact - but it doesn't move me as much as "Oh." Neither does Ciara's "Get Up" for that matter, though that's a good track too. My problem with each is that when the vocals coalesce into melody it's what I call "standard '00s r&b melody" (which I can't explain any better than that) (and "Get Up" does go into interesting pastorale moods, it's a fascinating song in a lot of ways, just doesn't make my heart disintegrate); and I'm just not a fan of "standard '00s r&b melody." I'll have to give more thought as to why. I think "Me & U" needs even more chill, and the tune even less melody.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:28 (eighteen years ago) link

There's a question: how near can you approach to complete stillness (or dead silence) and still be a pop record?

moriarty (moriarty), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Frank I know what you mean I think - the intersection b/w the arrangement and the vocal on "Oh" is definitely more startling and unusual. But I quite like the way the vocal melody on "Me & U" speeds up for the chorus (alongside that insistent itchy percussion), as if it's falling forward inevitably, like the body stirring and responding to stimuli.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 6 August 2006 03:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Was just listening to Pink's "Is It Love," a slow sing-song chant from '99 (and one of the most intense things she's ever recorded), and was thinking that that was the kind of melody I'd want "Me & U," something as insistent and repetitive as the accompaniment. Obviously, Pink doesn't do iciness, but I think her type of singing could work very well on this (though it'd be very different).

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 6 August 2006 04:01 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't heard this yet, but reading all the "Oh" comparisons makes me realize that I absolutely must hear it immediately.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Sunday, 6 August 2006 05:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Frank I love "Is It Love". When I first heard that Missundaztood was going to be kinda confessional, I imagined a whole album like that. But it's still something of a one-of-a-kind.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 6 August 2006 09:55 (eighteen years ago) link

frank totally otm with the crunk-pastorale thing on 'get up' (which is exactly why that song makes my heart disintegrate)

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 6 August 2006 14:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Even with my reservations about the vocals, I'm switching over to the majority here: "Me & U" is monstrously, megalithically powerful. And to think so much of the power comes from those little high blips. Those blips just kick ass. Hey, love them kick-ass blips, babe.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Sunday, 6 August 2006 15:49 (eighteen years ago) link

a few potentially coherent late-night reflections:

* I love Ciara but Cassie's part-Filipina-ness is almost a trump card
* she hails from the Long Day's Journey Into Night town
* the erotic subtext (supertext just about) vs. detached delivery = cool evocation of post-industrial nightlife meat-market malaise? = half-hearted surrender to/embrace of the meat-market model of urban social interaction OR mere happy-accident tension betw unpolished vox & run-of-the-mill r&b motifs?
* the bittersweet emaciation of Me & U's falling clave blips is almost snap

Roque Strew (RoqueStrew), Monday, 4 September 2006 09:55 (eighteen years ago) link

This might actually be my album of the year. I'm thinking that a better comparison might be "cassie - the new Aalyiah?". She obviously sounds a bit uncertain here and there but Aalyiah had a few years before turning into the icy diva that she'll be remembered as. If Cassie can develop a bit more charisma and effortless class, she might be really great. If not, she'll still have a very sexy debut.

Also I wanna know what Andy Doubtbeat means!

Are you referring to my last post? It was just a silly response to the "But she can't even sing!" nonsense. (Plus, it's probably the truth as well.) I could've also posted "I might like Shellac if Steve Albini could belt like Paul Rodgers."

Aaliyah is definitely the album this reminds me of most. It's definitely got that same sort of sheeny future-soul vibe.

did anyone else hear the teairra marí album last year? that's still the closest comparison, for me, though i see how cassie's similar to aaliyah too. ciara is a bit of a red herring.

i really love the whole album.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 09:03 (eighteen years ago) link

The seriously seriously underestimated Teairra album was one of my favorites last year -- the back half is nearly flawless, but there were no singles from it. Cassie's singles are stronger, though her nonsingles are considerably weaker.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

cassie's nonsingles were a bit of a curveball for me - i'm not convinced they're weaker, though, so much as they undercut the persona which cassie's built up in the singles - glacial, emotionally reticent, unwilling to give too much of herself away - and reveal that underneath she's actually warm and inviting. whereas the teairra nonsingles totally reinforced the glacial hard bitch persona she'd cultivated on the singles, removing the odd conflict between the two personae which i find on the cassie album.

artdamages, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

the vocals in 'so sick' are ridiculous...she sings ONE really really high-pitched note for the entirety of the verse, and the chorus is that half-rapped half-sung thing, and the beat of course is barely there, but it totally worms its way into your head, and each tiny tiny detail is totally magnified. her arrogance is v fun and endearing, too.

"Me & U" = Sinister and Seductive
"Sometimes" = Unsure and Sweet

They use the same sound effects, and they're both based around the same setup (verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge for "Me & U"/guest spot for "Sometimes"-chorus). They're like cousin tracks...Obv. "Me & U" is better, but "Sometimes" goes down just as easily.

deej, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:58 (sixteen years ago) link

This moment when the singer/producer dynamic-duo falters for the first time is usually the beginning of the end of something great though. I mean... great songs have come out of Amerie and Kelis working with producers other than their original partners-in-crime, but there's a whole loss of innoncence / kicked out of Eden vibe to it all isn't there.

Tim F, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 07:20 (sixteen years ago) link

but there's a whole loss of innoncence

but tapestore still likes it! oh wait that was a typo wasnt it.

anwyay yeah SUSPECT isnt the half. hard to fathom how anyone with an appreciation of cassie's uh fragile fortes wouldnt be imagining this collabo with some tredipation - ok granted there've been moments when danja suggests he could be a sensitive match (the offbeat kath mcphee & nikki flores teenpop stuff in particular) but if he goes and does his usual and britneys it she'll just get swallowed right up, surely. even furtadoing it would probably be too strong (not to mention it being straight uninteresting).

4 the record i think danja is potentially a monster producer but kinda needs to get out from under the timbrella now, especially following his showstopping cameo on 'i get naked'. otherwise yes wearisomely overrated, and never more so than when caught up in some tryhard's "nu-hiphouse omg omg i like dance" baby steps cobblers.

LOL. I'm not obsessed with Cassie, I just think her first album is excellent (in spite of her weak vocals), so of course I'm looking forward to the follow-up.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm a bit obsessed, yeah. Like Brainwasher, I'm a huge fan of her debut (and again, moreso because of Ryan Leslie, but Cassie still contributed a lot to the record...shame Just Friends didn't make the cut). It's a really consistent album.

What excites me now, though, is how much growth both Cassie and Leslie have shown since the debut. All the leaks are of a much higher quality than the ones that appear on her album...better production, better, more confident and more emotional singing and better songs (as said upthread, I prob. prefer "Is It You" to "Me & U")

They're a great duo, the closest, i think, we've come to an Aaliyah/Timbo situation. So yeah, I'm extremely excited about the album. And Danja? Well, he played a huge role in two of my favorite records of the '00s (my #1, FutureSex/LoveSounds, and Blackout)

btw, Cassie sounds a hell of a lot more exciting than other R&B favorites like, say, Amerie, who haven't really grown much from record to record.

"Official Girl" just passed "No Air" on my singles-of-the-year list (putting it at #1)

Re: Cassie vs. Karina...well, it's obv. no contest for me. Karina adds nothing new to the track. Vocally, she holds quite a bit of potential, but this song doesn't need any vocal gymnastics. The beat is so lush (omg the simple synth melody) and intricate (listen to the goddamn drums!) that showboating only detracts from its beauty. Cassie's understated vocal works so much better; she sounds like a part of the song, not just an element floating atop it...

I could go on and on about this...fuck, it's so interesting. At first I was excited about Danja working with Cassie, but then I worried that he'd give her one of his weaker beats (y'know, since he's super busy and she's Cassie). But to my surprise, Danja sounds brilliant here, one of his best beats, i think, and his vocal is good, too...probably better than "Is It You?"

SOOOOOO excited for rest of the album...

Sry you guys don't like it. There's something about it that reminds me of Lloyd's "You," actually.

is Danja starting to do vocals on tracks that sound like Timbo now? eww.

Naw, his voice is more pleasant, I think. I don't find it annoying at all. He was on Britney's album like this, too, unless I have a terrible memory. Also, I realllly like the "Danja..and the....CLUTCH!" intro (have they used that anywhere else???)

was there ever any indication that Kanye would actually be working on Cassie's album, back when he was putting her in videos and on magazine covers and everything? I could see her voice working well w/ his current production style.

God, I hope not. His current production style is almost as bad as his MC skills. Maybe worse (so much of Graduation only sounded good for two spins...e.g. "Champion," "The Glory"). . If this album is 75% Ryan Leslie, 25% other people, it should be perfect.

I've only heard a few Hot Chip singles, so if those aren't representative of their sound, ignore this, but what exactly does that mean? Are you talking about the production or the vocals? I just heard Cassie's version of Official Girl and it basically sucks. The first verse is overly clumsy and her voice sounds weaker than ever. Maybe it would have sounded better to my ears if i hadn't heard Karina's version... Her voice is a lot sweeter to swallow than Cassie's. Tyhe sond itself is bril though.

Christyles, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Cassie's voice is extra weak and her upcoming 'Official Girl' is going to bomb, she has better tracks on the new album like 'Thirsty' and 'Turn The Lights Off' but this is SOOO a thinly veiled attempt to express her like, feelings on her suspect relations/ship with P Diddy/Puffy. She's really hot tho, I'm sure that will work out for her. She's not the new Ciara because she can't dance and doesn't have a constantly successful production team.

At first the Aaliyah comparisons where just based around Ciara because 'they dance and sing' but then Cassie came in and people said she was trying to move in on Aaliyah's sound. Just random blogs and stuff there's a lot of hate from Aaliyah fans who think Cassie is dedicated to trying to rip off Aaliyah in terms of style and looks some are super paranoid and think she even moved to NYC to be like Aaliyah (a stretch to say the least)....

hang on did we ever talk about '2 the morning'? that song is so amazing, those cut-up backing vox and lurching beats and disquieting 808 pulses. waitaminutewaitaminutewaitaminuteyeah - everything i do i be makin' them stare...

'official girl' and 'thirsty' both have such awesome middle 8 pay-offs:

'my house' inevitably wormed its way deep into my heart, so fragile. there's a real secret-garden mystique about it which i love, like cassie's some sort of victorian gothic heroine. "this is my castle, babe..."

she has to release all of these songs! they are too good to be lost down the back of the sofa. but saying that she makes a new song every time one leaks is tremendously heartening.

The video blog she posted on her site (that first link up top here) is really adorable. Really upfront and meek and pleasant and friendly--'hey I just woke up and I'm sitting in my bed in my pjs not wearing makeup, uhh, what do you guys want my blog to be about...?' The closest thing to anything vain, which I was kind of anticipating, was like "my life's not very intersting, actually...I am getting a massage later...hmmm..." Well. That sounds nice.

Nice songs, too.

I can't believe it took me so long to get so much of this Cassie, I mean Me & U is maybe one of my favourite singles ever, but I'm falling over these really delicate pop-songs (Is it You?, Ditto, Long Way To Go). There's something really compact and minimal about all of them, Is it You in particular really lifts off without a whole lot, just that shoegazey guitar sound and those needly synths. She is really the most restrained singer. On Long Way to Go she barely even bothers to sing, the whole thing is just an excercise in barely-there remoteness.

I know, right?, Thursday, 23 October 2008 23:59 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah. the remoteness/minimalism is the only thing i can think off that's preventing her from taking off, because it puts the listener at a remove. at first listen there's so little to the songs and then they deepen and open up sonically the more you listen to them. i'm honestly not sure what it would take for Cassie to genuinely get another hit song.

Put A Ring On It (The Brainwasher), Friday, 24 October 2008 00:08 (sixteen years ago) link

She's obviously got a limited voice, but she has a directness of tone that comes through over the pretty merciless processing that's sometimes used on her voice (which, btw, sounds amazing in super-synch multitrack)

I know, right?, Friday, 24 October 2008 00:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Official Girl is a bit More Than A Woman, but way more concise, same feeling of lift though and maybe a little slinkier than the usual Cassie track.

I know, right?, Friday, 24 October 2008 00:21 (sixteen years ago) link

like, there's some really loose lines working under the ice sheets of synths

I know, right?, Friday, 24 October 2008 00:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Put A Ring On It (The Brainwasher), Friday, 24 October 2008 00:26 (sixteen years ago) link

either is anyone, but any other singer wouldn't really work in these songs, and that's a large part of their charm for me.

I know, right?, Friday, 24 October 2008 00:27 (sixteen years ago) link

despite her thin, technically limited voice, cassie's vocal presence is immensely powerful and compelling, and part of what makes her material so addictive is trying to get to the heart of what the hell she's even doing to make it so

Sadly not too surprised that "Official Girl" isn't blowing up (I wonder if Lil Wayne helped or hurt...I prefer the version without him, much like I prefer the T.I.-less version of another should-be hit, "Lovin' U Long Time")

Rumor is that "Thirsty" will be the second single...

Billboard wrote this in January:
And although a first single hasn't been released, Cassie assures it will be "a club record -- something fun and danceable." Possible contenders include the Seven-produced "My House," the flirty "Thirsty" and the concept track "Push It," on which Cassie sings, "Want you to light me up / keep me on my toes / gotta hold it steady."

"My House" and "Thirsty" have both leaked; "Push It," to my knowledge, has not...Maybe it could be the second single? I'm not sure if Bad Boy would release "Thirsty," which has been making the rounds for quite a long time now (and would also probably bomb).

Oh, and something more interesting: Cassie just released this new vid. The song, called "Sell It," sounds awesome--fun and slinky like "Activate":

Tape Store, Monday, 3 November 2008 16:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i really love 'thirsty' but it wouldn't be my choice of single...though given how badly the whole thing's going, hell, why not. it certainly sounds different enough that it could catch on.

it's horrible to think that when/if official product actually gets released, half the leaks will probably have been cut...so many great songs just discarded.

three weeks pass...

Interview on Hip Hop DX: http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/lifestyle-features/id.1262/title./p.1

Stuff about new album:
DX: Yeah, I ask because I read somewhere that you said, paraphrasing, I want people to see more and I want them to see my talent. What steps have you taken so that people do see beyond it and see the talent on this new album?
Cassie: I really pushed myself. I’ve gone back and…doing a record in one night isn’t the same thing as it was before. Like, if I do a record, I’m compassionate. There’s no way around it. Now, I really need to focus. So, I can do something and then I hear it later, and I’m like, "Shit! That doesn’t sound right." Then, I have to go back and spend six more hours on it because there needs to be something else there, something’s missing. I don’t know. It’s just taking that extra step and that extra mile to really want to win. Like, you really, really want people to know that you have that in you. I didn’t get here off of just drinking water and eating bread. I really, really worked hard.
DX: Who did you work with on the new album?
Cassie: When it first started, I was working with B.Cox and Jim Jonsin and who else? A few others. I worked with Rodney Jerkins. Then time passed and I started working with Mario Winans and Puff in the studio. Just recently, I got in the studio with Pharrell and did some stuff with Kanye [West]. There’s a little bit of everything. Oh, and Danja did the single and a couple of others.
DX: So, have you been rhyming more or singing?
Cassie: Singing! [Laughs] I cut that rapping thing out really quick.
DX: Why?
Cassie: It was fun for that one record and I wrote on that record so it was just a cool experience. It wasn’t really anything that I was super serious about. I don’t think anyone was like, "Wow! She can spit!" [Laughs]
HipHopDX: So, how would you describe the sound on this new record?
Cassie: The sound is, you know…it’s hard to even explain because at this point, I’ve recorded so many different records. Some which are on totally different opposite ends of the spectrum and we’re going to pick songs in probably like a few months. So, it’s kind of hard to explain the direction. But, the main direction of the songs that I really love is that they’re just big records that people will love to sing. I have a couple that are a little sensual and a little bit more grown up. I’m not saying I grew up and I want to be gratuitous or anything. But, there are songs that are for my age group and there are songs that are for an age group a little younger, because I have a younger fan base too.
...
DX: What about musically? How has that been?
Cassie: Musically? You’d have to hear the music. My problem is I’ve had a lot of songs leaked. But, at the same time, it’s helped me kind of figure out what people want and what they like. There’s a few records that have shown me exactly what people want to hear from me. So, it’s a gift and a curse at the same time. But, I don’t know. I’ve never really been criticized on my songs like that. People will be like, "Wow! She always picks a great song!

fair enough. nothing hilson's done has stuck with me yet, but my r&b tastes are mercurial, and only fairly recent, so i'm not the best barometer.

i'm curious as to what else gets classed as "micropop" a la I know, right's designation. is it a distinguishable subgenre? stillness of voice, lack of soaring emotions or vocal dynamics, intricate production....

part of me thinks Danity Kane should fall into it, but there are only 3ish songs off their album that seem worth my time, so perhaps they're micropop gone wrong.

OH, and GOOD NEWS:

MVRemix: With regards to the one’s that have already leaked, do you have plans to use those or put them elsewhere?

Cassie: You know what? I love every single one of the songs that has gotten leaked, so if [there are] any that I want to keep - I’m just gonna go back into the studio and re-vamp them and have fun with it. ‘Cause I’ve gotten good feedback on a lot of the records and that helps a lot too. Even though it’s a gift and a curse; the whole song leaking thing, it helps me try to figure out what people want to hear and what they like. So I’m definitely gonna go back in with some of the songs. I did a record called “Nobody But You” that I did with Tricky and [The] Dream and that got leaked. I’m keeping it because I really liked that song.

MVRemix: You’ve mentioned your frustrations at leaked songs, and as a music consumer, I wonder how you and the label don’t keep tighter wraps on material. How does it get out of your guys’ hands so easily?

Cassie: You know I think right now people are so intelligent and so smart with technology and with computers and with everything that I don’t count anything out. So if we’re sending a song through email or whatever, it’s a risk. So now you just have to be more conscious and make sure that we’re making the right decisions if we’re sending it to people. Just to be careful who you’re sending it to and what email you’re using. I don’t really know how it happens, but it happens to every artist now.

hahaha congratulations, you came up with the only possible album title worse than "Connecticut Fever"

dumb pseud (some dude), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 06:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Voila:

<a href='http://www.mediafire.com/?oyykideomok'>;Connecticut Fever</a>

Activate
2 the Morning (Ft. Young Dro)
Official Girl (Ft. Lil' Wayne)
Is It You?
In Love With U
I Don't Love You
In Love With the DJ
Nobody But You
Thirsty
My House
Sometimes (ft. R-Les)
Turn the Lights Off

I didn't think to put Addiction on there, and I think Over It is in the folder from before we knew it wasn't Cassie. Don't Go Too Slow, When Your Body Is Talking and that other one are bonus tracks off of Cassie and aren't ever going to be on Album #2, so I left them be. If you want them, they're floating around the internet.

What's Sell It?

the other Alex in MTL, in fact (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 26 November 2008 06:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I only kept it as "Connecticut Fever" because that's the title/cover that was floating around for a while. I was under the impression that it was legit.

i don't have 'i don't love you'!!! which is a singularly enticing title for a cassie song, i have to say.

there's a song called 'soldier 4 your love' doing the rounds too. it's a really lovely stargate-produced track - almost does the whole cosmic ryde-or-die declarative epic thing which every chick's been jumping on recently (not hating, i've got love for 'right here (departed)' and 'halo' and 'us against the world', but it's definitely becoming a rather rote thing now) - anyway, 'soldier 4 your love' almost does it but cassie drags it halfway back to her own introverted territory, as is her wont, and it ends up as oddly captivating as the rest of her material.

i like basically all the hilson i've heard, but i was never that enamoured of 'energy' - really the only hilson tracks which i've had that "whoa must put on repeat 4eva" reaction to are 'the way i are' and an 05/06 mixtape cut called 'hands & feet', which i was hoping that the scherzinger would exhume for her solo career. it goes "well u got big feet/and u got big hands/so i already know what's up in ur pants/where'd u get that from, ur daddy? where'd u get that from, ur daddy?"

haha the only leak cassie singles out is 'nobody but you', which is my least favourite of the connecticut fever leaks by some way - it's fine but cassie doesn't quite overcome the 'love in this club' familiarity of the beat. it'd be better without the signature ravey synths, they get rather intrusive. still worth it for that bizarro lyric "you got me sitting right here with my back facing this man/you're tormenting me in my serenity".

the other week i read some blind item about "which B-minus list r&b singer has just had her second abortion b/c a condition of her relationship w/her A-list producer is no children" and half the comments were "cassie and diddy, duh" :(

fucking hell. if only cassie lived in the UK. Patrick Wolf, among others, are using this ridiculous thing called Bandstocks to fund their upcoming albums, which basically entails fans buying stocks in the artist/album and earning back whatever they've put in, once/if the album breaks even. or...i don't know. I'd say she needs a wealthy benefactor/patron but she already has Diddy.

What do we have to do to get this album OUT already?

I really like this beat but, for once, I have to agree with the otherwise annoyingly wrong criticisms of her voice (that never seem to go away, at least on Youtube). She doesn't sound like she can handle this kind of material with sufficient authority (although the song may just be in the wrong key for her - the high notes sound like they are just out of her range).

the macabre faint beep of the internet life support machine just won't let her go, poor thing. this is what i find so distasteful, so ignoble about the whole thing, especially wrt those who fuck with the nu-freestyle angle - if you really love her then let her fade away into history like her inspirational peers! werent the last 15 years fun, not wondering when the new inoj album would come out?

'is it you' was such a cruel last gasp tbf.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 19:50 (fifteen years ago) link

4give me for saying so, but tape store's swansong has something of the patented self-mythologizing teenpop defence system® about it. obv i sympathise with the urge to not see her get totally ignored, and 'is it you' is as terrific as has been said, but it does seems slightly counterintuitive to be expecting a more robust critical (and cough cough popular) framework around her than there already is; moreover, is there not something laissez-faire and disposable that we secretly buy into with her in the first place? something a little... of the boutique, critically? (wasn't it kinda interesting how a lot of people, inc me, went for a nu-freestyle angle with 'me & u' - did anything audible in the song actually merit that? not really!) seriously, i am not trying to ride you guys on some "perfect pop" scorn tip but nor am i sure of quite what i want cassie to be achieving tbh.

New Cassie ft. Akon - Let's Get Crazy

http://www.zshare.net/audio/57674578f2d09e54/

Trying to puzzle this out. "my shine is like america's next top model"

don't know what akon adds to the proceedings or where this fits into cassie's overall thing. i'm pretty such it's a redone production, but less obnoxious than his GaGa stuff. it'll probably grow on me.

no the budden mix was a bit vaguer, had a ny throwback slant to it. (the same beat i prescribed for the cassie, funnily enough.) i see redone's must have eventually turned up on deluxe bonus whatever cos it's as ubiq as the og album mix on youtube.

In April 2009, Cassie revealed that she had shaved all the hair on the right side of her head. Cassie reasoned her actions by saying, "sometimes in life you need a change... Something that displays the 'I don't give a fuck' attitude that was always present, but never showcased".[16] While the haircut received positive attention from several artists—including Estelle, Keri Hilson, Questlove and Lauren London—rapper Fabolous felt that it was "a publicity stunt/internet buzz thing", and looked "like one of the haircuts from Edward Scissorhands." Many people speculated that she wanted a new edgier look, as it worked for other artists.[17]

Is there any 2009 Cassie I'm missing here? And while there's good stuff here, for sure, I think Lex might be right that nothing matches up to her best 07-08 stuff.

Or is it possible that after last year we're just having Cassie leak-fatigue?

wrapped up, packed up, ribbon with a donk on it (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 14 December 2009 00:48 (fifteen years ago) link

No, Nobody But You (ft the dream), I dunno I just picture her voice in such clicky icey soundscapes that tricky's lush minimalism shouldn't work but the way her voice shifts gears between the verse and bridge is pretty next level

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 14 December 2009 00:48 (fifteen years ago) link

altogether, incl. "cassie" i have 63 tracks on my iTunes, but there might be a couple of duplicates in there...

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 14 December 2009 00:49 (fifteen years ago) link

also the ft. lil wayne is not optional, wayne-free vers is the only real version

plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, 14 December 2009 00:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, jeez, yeah. That was the tail end of 2008 and at the time I think a lot of us wrote it off as a sub-Mariah Mariah song, esp. since Terius'n'Tricky were working on Memoirs at the time, but in retrospect a) it's a fucking GREAT song, and b) They didn't give Mariah ANYTHING close to this (would that they had).

This is such a fake. I think they are still calling the album "Electro Love", plus that Neptunes song "High" is suppose to be included on it. I would be upset if it was left out. I've been patiently waiting to hear that song forever.

Even if that song just leaked I wouldn't care about the album coming to fruition.

it'll quite amusing to see just how many unreleased albums cassie can rack up

the other side is at least the best title so far! no wonder it's just something some fan made up. "fuck u silly" needs to be on it though.

Despite already having the leaks, I decided to listen to "The Other Side" to see if it worked as an "album", and surprisingly it does (even without my beloved High/Hide snippet). The only new thing with Cassie is that Diddy supposedly forced her to delete her twitter. She was revealing too much about their "relationship."

I say quit fucking and get with releasing the damn album already, or just release this and call it a day.

At OSHEAGA (big MTL music festival) yesterday, I stopped by the electronic stage for an hour or two because Mary Ann Hobbs was spinning, and I caught a set afterwards by a friend of a friend who dropped a massively wonderful glitch/dubstep mix of Long Way 2 Go. In the process of figuring out what the fuck it is.

... The futureproofed daring of Cassie's recorded work was deemed unacceptable by a facile and superficial listening public to busy wondering whether they should have put a ring on it, and Cassie was for a time consigned to a life in the underground, with homemade tapes handed around at witch-house parties. The growing cult finally earned a name for itself in 2012 when Salem dropped the rare 7 inch release "Cassie Fan Club" featuring prominent vocal samples from unreleased Cassie song "Skydiver"...

I'm old-fashioned and like to think that "scene" should still have some grounding in geography.

Still, seeing as her own scene has evidently decided it can't be bothered with Cassie she might as well go chasing the FACT magazine audience if only to give her something to do. Still, Cassie doing witch house would be appalling, Cassie doing post-dubstep probably not much better. Shame this couldn't have fallen in a way that involved her voicing icy MIA-style minimal, but that obviously won't happen.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:20 (fourteen years ago) link

idk you have to imagine that if these guys are really that into her music, they would um keep that in mind when producing stuff for her if i mean you know that were ever to happen

plax (ico), Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Tim F, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Also what would be the point of oOoOO or Girl Unit or whoever just making a fake Connecticut Fever type track? Better to put together a collaborative track that suits the producer AND actually plays to her strengths, but from what I've heard of witch house in particular its a genre exceptionally ill-suited to her. Likewise anything with exceptionally heavy dubstep bass would make her voice sound ridiculously thin.

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 January 2011 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

from what I've heard of witch house in particular its a genre exceptionally ill-suited to her

as i said, creep would be my pick - their sound isn't as overwhelming as salem/white ring, their track with romy xx displays surprising pop instincts and they're working with nina sky, who aren't a million miles from cassie vocally.

I don't think that's really the narrative al, at least not now - but if Cassie does ultimately get the retrospective treatment you can bet that's how it'll be framed.

1) He apparently has been chatting with Cassie on Skype and the whole 'working together on a track for his album' thing might really happen !!!
2) He seemed fairly confident from those conversations that her album would be coming out sometime in 2011, if not on a big label/Bad Boy/whatever, then on something smaller.

(Also, on a totally unrelated note, while I really quite love his album he had a cold today and dropped an octave out of the falsetto for one or two songs and MY GOODNESS he has a wonderful (traditionally good) r&b voice when he's not pitching himself up into sad nostalgia indie range. in an alternate universe there is a version of Love Remains which features him singing in his regular singing voice with fuller studio production and it is a BANGING r&b album. he also did a 100% faithfully earnest cover of 'I Wish' by R Kelly which was sort of wonderful)

Great update Alex in Montreal. I tried listening to How To Dress Well and my first impression was it sounded like an indie guy singing half ass faux quiet storm music. However, I'm willing to listen to him again.

Also, I hope this album is released in a smaller label. That way it won't have this impossible expectation to sell Rihanna/Beyonce like numbers. Plus, with this seemingly indie love she is getting it would be interesting how they advertise this album.

Plus there is this:

Um...I mean, if HtDW isn't your thing it isn't your thing (Lex, this means you). He's part of a particular subset of underground/lo-fi music these days whose tastes and interests musically are firmly in the world of R&B, bass and dance stuff (and who often have quite good taste when it comes to these genres), but whose music doesn't necessarily reflect that, or at least not the values that more 'traditional' fans of those genres might zoom in on. End result is it appeals more to people who might completely ignore the stuff they're using as inspiration than those with similar musical affections.

Which is just a long round-about way of saying that it will make Lex apoplectic. :)

Yeah this concept popped up my mind when trying to hear it this past December. It felt like "safe music" for indie kids who didn't want to listen to scary, black r&b (roll eyes). However I have a habit of dissing something at first listen and coming back to it months and years later appreciating it for what it is despite the ignorance of the fans attached to it.

This seems really harsh. What evidence is there that How to Dress Well fans are ignorant? My understanding is that much of his appeal is that he truly is well researched R&B enthusiast playing with the conventions of a genre he deeply loves and understands. HtDW fans might not be as versed in R&B, but they certainly have an appreciation for the genre. A listener would have to be pretty masochistic to listen to that HtDW album if they didn't like R&B.

Evan R, Monday, 31 January 2011 17:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Mmm. Not to derail the thread of an artist I really love but it's not about it being safe for white kids or not. He's not trying to make it safe or approaching it ironically - just filtering his interests/influences through his personal musical sensibilities. It seems fairly uncontroversial to me to suggest that people are frequently influenced by music without replicating it in their own output. He's not making R&B. Just influenced by it.

Now those are valid reasons not to listen to HtDW. I'm with Alex, though; I think the guy's got a fair amount of talent and could turn out some genuinely great more conventional R&B if he wanted to, and his heart is in the right place. He's honoring R&B, not sanitizing it.

kinda wish folks wouldnt worry about 'sensibilities' & worry more abt writing good songs bcuz when it comes down to it the affects of R&B dont matter like the songwriting does

Unfortunately, with HtDW the sensibilities and the songs are really one and the same... he deliberately slathers affects over his songs to render the lyrics indecipherable, so for better or worse his songs are more about mood than sentiment. That's a big part of why his album is so divisive.

p4k interview said he was into black dice and the dream and that his work is abt the reciprocity b/w the dreams swirls of synth and black dice swirls of noise. its not bad rnb its lofi indie rooted in rnb, saying its badly produced if its tryna be rnb is missing the point

plax (ico), Monday, 31 January 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago) link

you can have well-produced indie too! idk and tbh i don't care how r&b it's trying to be - though i think lilsoulbrother's complaint has a lot of merit when it comes to critical attention/praise that "lo-fi indie rooted in r&b" gets compared to actual r&b - b/c to me this (and gayngs too) fails on a really basic aural level.

yeah well then i think yr gonna miss out on abt 50% of what this guy is doing which is spec. about those grating textures and kindof aleatoric dissonance. to say that its "badly produced" seems p unhelpful

I mean, what it boils down to is this. His favourite shit of 2010 is Egyptrixx, Deadboy, Wiz Khalifa, Ciara, The-Dream, Gucci, Girl Unit, Forest Swords, Waka & Teengirl Fantasy + a bunch of metal thread shit. Dude is impeccable taste-wise imo - the dead centre of ILX goons/R&B stans/UK bass/metal rolling thread denizens and channels all of that in various ways. I like it, some people don't, but dude isn't limited to his lo-fi stuff (the three or four mixes he's done for Fader/The Wire/somewhere else have been pretty good). If he ends up working with Cassie, he's enough of a fan of her stuff + her vocals to know what to do with them.

I think "Radio" has a good concept to it though I don't think it is executed perfectly. It's just nice to hear a new song from her. Plus, "Make You A Believer" sounds very sexy. The line "Do you want to ride?" sounds eerily similar to Janet Jackson's "Rollercoaster."

it's ridiculous that ciara actually made three of the best r&b tracks of THIS year and still managed to continue fucking up her career

like "got that good" bangs but it's basically a "gimmie dat" retread so WHY try that again
"sorry" is aight but it sounds so desperate in its attempt to reclaim that "promise" magic
whereas "sophomore" and "livin' it up" were both legit incredible and hooky and not like stuff you've done before so OF COURSE you don't bother to release them

lex pretend, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

lex pretend, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

lex pretend, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:14 (twelve years ago) link

has there been a year Ciara has released music that you wouldn't say she made 3 of the best R&B tracks of the year?

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

probably not, that's why she's one of my favourite r&b artists! are you suggesting that i'm not listening critically? was denying subjectivity not what you decided to pile on me for this morning?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

i just feel like it diminishes the accomplishments of an actual 10 out of 10 classic Ciara song like "Promise" if you think she has 40 songs that good

I'm sorry to say with this Cassie Collective Trilogy I'm beginning to see what I've been missing. To those that say they missed out on some of her best stuff, what are they missing? Is there a better, unofficial comp out there?

I Be Ballin Outta Control, Monday, 11 February 2013 13:43 (eleven years ago) link

i doubt they missed out anything, it's pretty exhaustive right? i just don't think much post-2008 really needed to be included

lex pretend, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:38 (eleven years ago) link

^^^ what lex said. they didn't miss tons but the 12 track comp we put together a track list for in 2008/2009 hits most of the highlights.

Skydiver and Stamina are both pretty perfect, and Balcony and King of Hearts are enjoyable, and I'm never going to complain about /more/ Cassie, but I listen to it more often as a distilled single album.

well that was a predictable intro

r|t|c, Friday, 12 April 2013 13:07 (eleven years ago) link

of all the r&b second-tier starlets i find cassie to be the most blank-slate. i'm still trying to find out what this mixtape is about. the only impression i get halfway in is a clumsy attempt at doing bad-bitch-by-numbers.

i get the fascination with her - she has great... potential? but has she really made any career moves that haven't been horribly clumsy and awkward?

it has been a chore listening to this one half of the mixtape and i'm not optimistic for the next half :/

cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Friday, 12 April 2013 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

"i make music to numb your brain" probs not the best advised lyric

r|t|c, Friday, 12 April 2013 13:58 (eleven years ago) link

i think she thinks she's pandering to the watching-the-party-thru-smoke vibes crew w/that line

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 12 April 2013 14:01 (eleven years ago) link

the mixtape did surprise me in that most of it is trying to bite that riri #phuckeverything swag but it's not a great fit overall

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 12 April 2013 14:02 (eleven years ago) link

will listen. as for tiers, casseie's blankness is obviously what makes her first tier, and i think the better question is has she made any moves that HAVE been clumsy and awkward? i dunno, i haven't heard a lot by her that isn't perfect. been bumpin balcony on repeat lately.

surm, Friday, 12 April 2013 14:03 (eleven years ago) link

it's an inherently sweet blankness though, at its best. the 'pour it up' style nihilism this tape flirts with is above her paygrade

r|t|c, Friday, 12 April 2013 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

i like how the guests aren't listed on this soundcloud, makes a much funner game of bingo when you don't know when to expect jeremih's whinnying

r|t|c, Friday, 12 April 2013 14:14 (eleven years ago) link

her royal blankness

oh no, now i'm nervous :(

surm, Friday, 12 April 2013 14:14 (eleven years ago) link

the song with jeremih is good

sisilafami, Friday, 12 April 2013 14:15 (eleven years ago) link

i just find her work to be disparate and unfocused. like she's trying to find a lil r&b niche and fill it. i hadn't heard balcony yet but the first youtube comment was pretty otm with the jhene aiko comparison. balcony isn't even a bad song or anything. but jhene has already carved out her niche. now cassie is just jumping from hazy sex to NINO CARTER in the span of a few months, and that's genre hopping from an artist w/o the pedigree to get away with it

i say second tier in terms of mainstream success. most regular music fans i know perceive her as a forgettable one hit wonder. i know she has the cult following but by definition cult following =/= most definitions of first tier

cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Friday, 12 April 2013 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

wait a minute jhene's niche is ENTIRELY based on biting cassie

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 12 April 2013 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

like i remember the first time i heard jhene just thinking "does the #cassiefanclub own a laboratory now and did they create this girl in it"

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 12 April 2013 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

at the same time, not achieving mainstream success doesn't mean you are not a first-rate musician. her cult following has happened bc she did in fact fill a niche. to this day i can't think of anyone else i could put on when i am in the mood for that vibe. she has a very particular voice, and the precision of it, along with cleanliness of her production is what makes her anything but disparate and unfocused.

four years pass...

Me & U is currently perched in the top 25 on iTunes U.S. ...it's also the most downloaded R&B track in the UK right now?!

all the way down, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:43 (seven years ago) link

it's featured on the itunes front page in both countries. in the us it's listed on both the 'hot tracks' and '69¢ songs' sections, both of which are known to give sizeable boosts to both new and old songs.

presumably this is all part of bad boy's promo for its apple music-exclusive movie which has taken up all the banners on the front page. three other bad boy tracks are on the 'hot tracks' front page along w/ "me & u", and if you check you'll notice all of those are also high on the itunes charts now.

dyl, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 17:47 (seven years ago) link

thanks! I was quite shocked. still quite impressive, I wonder why they picked that of all the possible older Bad Boy tracks?! (and justice for Official Girl and Must Be Love!) but I mean clearly it worked and it's not like I'm denying it's a certified classic by now, I watched that Bad Boy doc and Cassie herself is only in it for a couple seconds though... a pretty good (mostly Diddy-centered) documentary by the way.

That...is so weird. On multiple levels, not the least of which being that it popped up on my iPod twice this week after not hearing it in years. It's a jam.

Oh hey never mind, I was thinking of the JoJo song because I'm an idiot (I think K-Ci and JoJo almost certainly figured into my confusion).

Duane Quarterdump (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 23:26 (seven years ago) link

So weird...I was compiling songs for an assembly this week where kids who get certain awards parade around the gym to music and high-fives. I needed about 25 songs, half current stuff the kids like, half songs that the staff--okay, I--like. I included "Me & U" as sort of a bridge; sounds current but isn't. When I went onto the iTunes chart for other ideas, there it was. I felt psychic but was baffled. Is it sampled on something current?

I had totally forgotten about her (and her great album) but Spotify showed me she has just released a single and I found out she's actually released many over the last couple of years (like a EP worth of material).
After a first listen they all sound pretty good.
Whatever happened to her ? How come she still hasn't released a second album... 13 years after her debut ??
She's not yet in Gunsn'Roses / MBV territory but for a rnb/popstar that's a crazy long time !

This thread pretty much tells the story tbf - i.e. too many good tracks leaked; too many less good tracks selected as trailers for a potential new LP; found domestic bliss; soon to be a mother, I believe; music now just a hobby?

I just listened to the last 3 released cuts on Spotify. I see they are linked by similar cover art, so this may indeed become an EP or something more soon. All 3 songs are OK, but no better than the weakest of the late 2000's leaks. The latest, "Speaking Of" is probably the pick of the bunch.
