Basement Jaxx announce the release of their fourth studio album - "Crazy Itch Radio". Following on from the success of the UK double-platinum No.1 "Singles" collection, "Crazy Itch Radio" will be hitting the shops in early September 2006. You have been warned!

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 17 June 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

Has anyone seen them on their current Robbie Williams support slot? Heard any new stuff?

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 17 June 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Great title. I have high hopes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 17 June 2006 23:04 (nineteen years ago)

Indeed! Looking forward to it. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 June 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

Does anyone have them for the States now?

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 17 June 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

one hopes that this is the album that will finally make the notoriously jaxx-phobic ilm come around

gear (gear), Saturday, 17 June 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

ILM is Jaxx-phobic???

Fuck an ILM.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 18 June 2006 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

So gear, should we tell Deric or not or...?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 18 June 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

I read that as jazz-phobic and was wondering what that had to do with anything.

And yeah, ILMers prefer Daft Punk, amirite!

It's Rodney, pimp! (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 18 June 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

t'hell with that noise, gimme gimme gimme!!!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 June 2006 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

I await impatiently. Hopefully we'll get less Dizzie Rascal and more whatever-her-name-is-on-Romeo-and-Red-Alert

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 18 June 2006 01:27 (nineteen years ago)

sweet!

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 18 June 2006 02:04 (nineteen years ago)

Is Robyn gonna be on the record, one wonders.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Sunday, 18 June 2006 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

hopefully we'll get more dizzie...and less of her from the banshees.

they can do no wrong in my book

grapple (grapple), Sunday, 18 June 2006 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

New single performed on T4 today. Felt like Jaxx-pop by numbers - an even safer summer version of 'Oh My Gosh'.

Hal! Jordan! HAL! JORDAN! (Barima), Sunday, 18 June 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

and less of her from the banshees.

Out.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Saturday, 8 July 2006 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

If it's the single I heard on the radio the other day it's a right fucking mess.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 8 July 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

Then again I think (APART from "Good Luck") they've been pretty much rubbish since that third album anyway.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 8 July 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

Erm, Good Luck was on the third album.

Which track is Lady Sovereign on then? She's got to be on there somewhere.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 8 July 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

i'm baffled at "jaxx phobic".

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 8 July 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

1 Intro
3 Zoomalude
8 Skillalude
11 Intro Reprise

right so its a 10 track-er basically.

piscesboy (piscesboy), Saturday, 8 July 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm actually sort of disappointed it's a new album ... from the thread title I was thinking maybe they started a podcast ...

Lukas (lukas), Saturday, 8 July 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

i hope 'Skillalude' is just Buxton bawling 'I AM SKILL' over and over thru distorted vocoder and gonging for 12 seconds.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 8 July 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

If it isn't, can you just record a version of Alan doing that?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 8 July 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

hopefully they'll be going down the 'more dance-pop' route than
the 'more live band feel' route. the titles don't give much away do they?

they are supporting robbie on his uk shows. that's...weird.

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 13 July 2006 10:56 (nineteen years ago)

good exposure for them i suppose.

i don't expect them to blow me away with anything this time. it'd be a very pleasant surprise if they did. At least the title suggests it WON'T be full of 'comedown' tracks full of acoustic guitar and Felix crooning (they did this well with 'Feels Like Home' on 'Kish Kash' tho).

It'd be great if Grace Jones featured. And if Stevie Wonder can work with Blue you'd think he could spare a half hour to phone in something nice for them too.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 13 July 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

I hope there isn't a fake radio theme with announcers and retuning of stations and stuff.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 13 July 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

BIT OD SLAf BASS and 80's stuff yeah? maybe something like sandinista but with hot girls in lycra. sirens n stuff.

my fave band btw. looking forward.

BIT OD SLAf BASS and 80's stuff yeah? maybe something like sandinista but with hot girls in lycra. sirens n stuff.

WHOA! This string of words blows my mind. I hope it's on the sticker advertising the album on the front cover.

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 14 July 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

Is it too cheesy to think that rather than Dizzee they'll have Crazy Titch on it instead?

Oh, and more JC Chasez please.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 14 July 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

Linda "It's In His Kiss" Lewis and Robyn feature, apparently. "Hush Boy" is the first Jaxx single I don't like, it's "Oh My Gosh" meets Eighties disco, an average song and a not too great vocal performance. The horns sound a bit EW&F. Hmm.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

yeah its a definite first that u dont hear it and have to stop for breath afterwards. its just 'ahh yes another jaxx single'. it's rather like an extra unreleased soon-to-be-a-single song at the end of a greatest hits would sound.

Its better than JUMP N SHOUT.

pisces (piscesx), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

isn't crazy titch in jail?

i too am looking forward to this!

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

The album is very good. Less cataclysmic and less concerned with eating your brain than the last one, but supremely solid and song-y. Much in the way of ethno-flourish (a country song, an Eastern European song, a soca song, and so forth), but all recognizably Jaxx-ified. Housey whoosh and glide prioritized over careening crashes. I toggled between opinions the first few listens but have grown to love it and suspect that will grow still more.

Andy Battaglia (Andy Battaglia), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

"hey you" is kind of a jaxx klezmer song! or at least jaxx does, as you said, e european serbian-esque brass. crazy!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking of which, can anyone tell me anything about the compilation of eastern european house/techno being released on Atlantic Jaxx???

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

Good cover. I approve.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 07:59 (nineteen years ago)

Its better than JUMP N SHOUT.

I doubt this!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

i like the dogradio but the rest of that cover BLOWS.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:37 (nineteen years ago)

Its better than JUMP N SHOUT.

stevem otm -- does not compute.

Slarta John (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

"hey you" is great. the single is still meh.

el juan (el juan), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

the country song RULES

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 11:53 (nineteen years ago)

haha PLEASE LORD DONT MAKE ME GIVE THIS A BAD REVIEW ON FUCKING P*TCHF*RK OF ALL PLACES

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

both basement jaxx and myself have turned to self-parody

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

it's better than 'do your thing' too while we re about it.

is it okay to suggest where MP3s *might* be hiding? in these days of no YSI threads? like, say the hyp£ machin£?

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

ask ian about our 'cutting edge' new solutions...

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

anyway i'm not surprised that the Jaxx have disappointed this time. i can't think of an artist who ever managed four killer albums in a row.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

they've been going forever, its 0x surprising.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

plus factor in three killer albums in the space of just FOUR years as well.

ha ha, apologising already and i've not even heard it yet.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

stevem are you joking abt this four killer albs in a row biz ??

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:14 (nineteen years ago)

nope. i can't think of any. doesn't mean there aren't any. has this been done as an ILM thread yet? i think that might excite people who like that sort of thread...otoh life is for living...

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

there have been many many such threads, all of them started by geir. normally the ans is the rolling stones.

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

prince too. obv. they might have heard of him.

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

My life is better since I know "Take me back to your house".

snowballing (snowballing), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

'Hush Boy' is OK - esp. if you imagine the 'if you want me for you girlfriend' bit being sung by Cookie Monster.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

haha robyn is on this. FIRST BAD SIGN :(

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

"The Sound of Life's Beats" feat. Chris Martin

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

"take me back to your house" is so the standout

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - yeah 'cos Rachel Stevens really has the kind of lively, life-affirming spunk to carry off a Basement Jaxx tune. ROFL!

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Robyn (not that I've heard the track) beats that dude from Backstreet Boys mugging all over the tune like an even lamer Jamie Lidell last time anyway.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

on one listen I like it a lot. don't think it's up to the last three but it's still really good.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

jc chasez is awesome and the jc chasez track was awesome and oh come on there is absolutely no way in which jc chasez is not better than robyn!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

I'm with the Lex there on JC's awesomeness. (Jamie Lidell? Wash yer mouth out with soap.)

matos OTM

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

"everybody" is pretty crazy!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

Is that Cee-Lo on "On the Train"?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

'Hush Boy' is pretty much on a par with 'Oh My Gosh' from where I'm standing. I wouldn't have known it was Robyn if I hadn't been told!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

wait wait what... the single has Robyn on it?? maybe I need to hear it again but that'll be the one I thought was garbage.

advantage Lex :(

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

"Take Me Back to Your House" is the early keeper.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

ok, It's not Robyn. Still think it's a mess.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

matos is otm, although i definitely need more listens. "hush boy" is growing on me, but it's still nowhere near "romeo" or "lucky star" in the 1st-single-off-the-album stakes.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

I bet you any money it charts higher than Lucky Star.

Don't forget - the Jaxx Greatest Hits was one of the biggest selling UK albums of last year.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, Jaxx Singles comp was huge . . . + didn't they have some sort've triumphant Glastonbury thing? + opening for Robbie Williams?

anyway - not continuing the trajectory they've been heading in (but I don't honestly see you you could get denser than the last one . . .

The first half of the album is the best first half they've had since Remedy, I think - "Take Me Back To Your House" the best, but "Hey You" (EASTERN EUROPEAN PUB CHANTS!), "Hush Boy" (stevem OTM re: cookie monster bit), "Run 4 Cover" wld probably do better than "Lucky Star" as a single even if I don't like it as much yet (+ the title makes me flash to Missy Elliot every time I see it).

"Everybody" also has excellent gang chants.

etc (esskay), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

wow. this album is a total dissapointment.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

Tim - you mean Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers? Am trying to track it down . . .

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:21 (nineteen years ago)

haha i am amazed by the speed at which this has travelled around the internet already

david allen grier (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 July 2006 00:47 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah that one Ess Kay! Apparently it's being released in Oz in a month or two.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 July 2006 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

Actually i'm wrong about Cookie Monster, it's more hyperactive Fozzie bear. It totally saves the song tho.

'Run 4 Cover' is pretty fucking great.

Elsewhere it's largely a case of dropping in some fantastic sounds within the tracks to lift them only just above averageness. 'On The Train' is a good example with that spooky super-low organ bass.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

yeah heard the whole thing now and it's a massive disappointment. what's with the breathy-female-fake-radio-station-speech stuff?
talk about something that's been done to death.

HEY YOU is great though, also ..BACK TO YOUR HOUSE.

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 20 July 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

the single is pretty uninspired, id say. some great sounds, but the song is quite poor. the lyrics are meant to be funny in a trashy sort of way, but they just end up being trash. dissapointing. i really liked oh my gosh.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

it's not that bad. there's no retuning. this is the digital age after all.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

best ever fake station radio announcer :
MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS - a tribe called quest

worst:
WALL OF SOUND - slade

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

I never listen to that Queens of the Stone Age album with the fake radio bits on and only bcz of those bits.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 20 July 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

I like "Hey You" - it sounds like end-of-the-night, make-those-tired-legs-move music. The problem is I feel like that's what MOST jaxx stuff sounds like now.. my fave jaxxstyle is the beginning-of-the-night thrillers like Samba Magic and Rose Rouge, even though they didn't do Rose Rouge - they basically invented it

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

for the last 6 months my fave Jaxx track has been 'Breakaway' - even more so since finding this great unofficial/DIY video for it on youtube

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

Is that Cee-Lo on "On the Train"?

No, it's Taylor Hicks. :D

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 July 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

American Idolatrer!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, though, I listened to "On the Train" on the train this morning and wasn't convinced it was Cee-Lo. Something too generic about this dude.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

I think each Jaxx album is full of surprises, and so far this one is really rewarding close listening. It's growing on me.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

yeah BREAKAWAY was the single-that-should-have-been that all great bands have buried away on album 2 or 3. what became of the vocalist

"i'm on fire-ya/ andigottobreaout" i love him.

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 20 July 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Breakaway is perfect in any sense, there is not a sound/sample that is out of place, and there is simply no space to add anything else. And one of those tracks that i absolutely refuse to listen to if it's not loud enough.

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Thursday, 20 July 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Four songs in, this is great!! This country-house song is fucking awesome!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 21 July 2006 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

GODDAMN this album is amazing!! It's just like Ween's Chocolate and Cheese, where every song is in a totally different style to the others. Just brilliant. Album of the year, no question.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 21 July 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

'no question' and you're eight songs in?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 21 July 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

Every song is sort of in a different style, but they've approached them all in a very similar way so that it, weirdly, all FEELS the same. Well, except maybe the downbeat stuff and even that seems to wear a bit of a false grin.

Too many cutesy girly singers and crap Latino flourishes. Not enough ruffneck male vocalists, hollering divas, thunderous basslines, processed synthetic rock guitars, grimey MCs or, well, anything else really.

After the success of the Greatest Hits, it almost sounds like they've gone out of their way to tone down a lot of that stuff and make a big shiny pop album. But as a result, it feels kind of disconnected from everything that's going on now. It's like a Telegraph reader's idea of what gets played at the Notting Hill Carnival.

I like Hush Boy and Take Me Back To Your House, but after then it gets pretty dull pretty quickly. Run 4 Cover is a mess - is that someone impersonating Lady Sovereign or is she just doing the laziest turn of her career?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 July 2006 07:18 (nineteen years ago)

For a second I thought maybe I'm just not into this sort of stuff any more and was yearning for a nice Dominik Eulberg remix or something but I put on Good Luck and Lucky Star and remembered the enormous shiver of excitement that went down my spine the first time I heard Kish Kash and realised that's not true at all.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 July 2006 07:20 (nineteen years ago)

pisces (piscesx), Friday, 21 July 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

"Run 4 Cover" is Lady Marga.

Basement Jaxx albums always feel to me like they're frontloaded, but I actually think that CIRadio is better than some of their other efforts as far as not having second half fillers go.

lots of different types of music get played there, and i think 'Run 4 Cover' would go down v well among them.

It's like a Telegraph reader's idea of what gets played at the Notting Hill Carnival.

this is true of all jaxx albums, in a way! love em to bits (except the boring pre-brix stuff) but they've always been kind of 'digested larndarn'.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Friday, 21 July 2006 09:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but this one seems to have a lot of the awkward edges (Jump and Shout, Get Me Off, Lucky Star etc) shaved off and replaced with a sort of tasteful self-conscious Funky! Carnival! Vibe!, like Bingo Bango diluted with a generous doese of High Street Latino Night

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

i like 'Smoke Bubbles'. the first line reminds me of 'Let's Make Love And Listen Death From Above'.

I was going to say I think Smoke Bubbles is good too.

Paul Eater (eater), Saturday, 22 July 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

I like this album a lot here is a qoute from Robyn Forum ( http://robynforum.rocks.it )
"it got so many different music styles and different artists, its like picking songs to a mp3-player where you only take the best music from many artists" Its just the same as I feel for it, and I have never heard this gang before ;-) Guess I have to look for some of their other albums

Petra Pops (Petrapops), Saturday, 22 July 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

I was a big fan of their first album, totally lost interest after that. I dispair over the fact that I opened this thread, perhaps I will only be disappointed by them again, but I will give it a try anyway.

Anyone know the title of the extra track, comes in 3:19 from the end. It's a downtempo number, with the lyric "As the night, moves on..." repeated. I'm gonna call it Night (Moves On) for now, but anyone know what it's actual title is?

Stu McPoo (Stu McPoo), Saturday, 29 July 2006 06:09 (nineteen years ago)

it's just an untitled 'hidden track' i think

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 29 July 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

I think this album is a grower. Every Jaxx album grows. 'Keep On Keep On' is really wonderfull but too short!!:( 'On The Train' is getting better and better. I think 'Take Me Back To Your House'will be the next single. It's really catchy:)

They will never make a album that Is better than their 'Remedy' album. Thats a MASTERPIECE!

The Famous Biting Guy (The Famous Biting Guy), Sunday, 30 July 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

Excellent record, though not what most people will want from Basement Jaxx. No, it's not rough. Not at all. It's... smooth. I want to make someone who thinks they like Jamiroquai listen to this and understand the error of their ways.

barima otm way up top with "jaxx pop by numbers" - i don't think they're trying to do anything noticeably different to what they always tried to do, but they can't do it so well any more.

fourth album from dance act innit. MANDATORY RETIREMENT PLEASE.

Ah! This album is GREAT. Cut some slack! I didn't like it at all the first time I heard it. I've been listening to it for a week now and every song on the album grows. I think it's better than 'Kish Kash'. The song 'Everybody' Is a killer track. Love it. Is there anyone who likes the album axcept me???

The Famous Biting Guy (The Famous Biting Guy), Friday, 4 August 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

This album isn't really what i was expecting from this thread!

The only track that sounds "smooth" to me is "Take Me Back To Your House", which I'm surprised so many people think is the standout. Maybe it should be the standout, but they flub the chorus a little bit.

On the other hand, "Hey You" is deathlessly brilliant - anyone who likes it should check out the Gypsy Beats & Balkan Bangers comp which is very similar in parts.

And I actually really like "Hush Boy", which is certainly as dense as anything they've done. Maybe people are reacting to the jazzy horns and the like? Generally I don't feel like this album is less dense than its predecessors: actually it's messier in a way, there's not the maximalism+clarity that you get on Kish Kash (where each sound is carefully positioned to get a showstopping moment in spotlight, like when the Spanish guitars suddenly come to the fore in "Lucky Star"). At times it strikes me as sounding like what would happen if The Avalanches were contracted to make a Basement Jaxx album.

I wonder what has inspired this album - the gypsy stuff for "Hey You" obv but I suspect that they've also been listening to lots of mid-to-late 80s R&B (I love the fragment of a slow jam on "Zoomalude" that turns into this shimmering bubbles-run-up-your spine loop, as good as any French House ever) - and maybe also London pirates playing funky house, which would explain both the radio theme and the slight return to house relative to Kish Kash.

What is not inspiring this album:
- Prince! Except on stuff like "Smoke Bubbles" and "Hiccup' which have a bit of that Parade weird-pop vibe. And maybe it's a good thing that they've decided to move on from making stuff like "Right Here's The Spot" - which is an awesome track yeah but how do you get more Prince from there? But I do miss it, it was like the Jaxx's true north and as long as they aimed for it they could never make mistakes.
- electrohouse etc. obv which is funny b/c in retrospect Basement Jaxx almost invented it - if "Yo Yo" came out today people would call it electrohouse.
- London urban stuff? No this criticism is a bit off-base I think, and probably based solely on the fact that Dizzee was excellent of "Lucky Star" while the main rapper on "Run 4 Cover" is not (the guest rapper is great though!). As an aside, I love that bit where the London girl is saying something like "and then you realise that, this is the world, and you're in it!"

It's not obvious but I think a lot of attention was paid to songs this time around - I really like a lot of the lyrics. "Smoke Bubbles" and "On The Train" and "Lights Go Down" give the album a slightly dark thematic underbelly. I can't off the top of my head remember them writing any songs about drugs before, and now they've given us two, perhaps three. Wonder what's behind that.

The drawback on this album - what makes it their worst album ever, although for the Jaxx that's only a mild rebuke - is probably that the various components of the songs never combine so flawlessly into the inevitable machines of the previous albums, where the craziness is balanced by a singleness of purpose. "Hey You" aside, there is on every track at least one thing I'd change. On the other hand, I remember that it took about a month for Kish Kash to go from "woah crazy sounds" to "this song has always existed" for me, so it'll be interesting to see whether I grow to accept and finally love the aspects of these songs that currently niggle at me.

I really like the b-side "Trouble" - weird soca-garage-spanish-guitar-soul. Shoulda been on the album!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 10 September 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

Felix told me they recorded some 40 tracks for the album. Also, that it was intended as a response to the "cold" and "claustrophobic" sound of "Kish Kash." And also that the twang element of "Take Me Back to Your House" came about when the singer showed up wearing cowboy boots.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 11 September 2006 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

i felt slightly guilty about the slating i gave this in plan b, until i tried to listen to it again, and it really is so pedestrian. even the 'better' songs get dragged down, there's just such an overwhelming feel of HELP NO IDEAS LEFT throughout.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

'U R On My Mind' reminds me of Mr Fingers.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

They had a good run, they should give up now while there's still some residual goodwill.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, Mr Fingers, definitely. Except with even flimsier vocals.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

This album is consistently good with fewer "OMG BEST SONG EVER" moments, even though they're still there ("Hey U", "Run 4 Cover", "Everybody"). This album seems to be much more about blending disco and house than their other albums, esp. in terms of their use of treble-heavy timbres.

Also "Run 4 Cover" is easily one of the best songs they've ever done.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 September 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

It's their best album so far -- in part because, as Dan intimated, they don't try to exhaust you with possibilities on each track.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

"They had a good run, they should give up now while there's still some residual goodwill"

Where exactly is the "good will" in "give up now".

everything (everything), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

I think the "they should stop recording music because I don't like them anymore" attitude is datapoint #1 for why artist should actively ignore their fans.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 September 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

but then they'll ignore your views too, and not know WHAT to believe anymore!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 14 September 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

Also, that it was intended as a response to the "cold" and "claustrophobic" sound of "Kish Kash."

This is why artists should never take their own criticism seriously. Ever.

Take Me Back To Your House was played at Poptimism and I remembered it's kind of great and I still like Hush Boy but Run For Cover is just plain annoying and I've lost interest in going back to this one. Whereas one listen to Kish Kash had me in "OMG BEST ALBUM EVER!" fever for weeks.

'Take Me Back To Your House' actually unsettles a bit because of how desperate/needy/fragile the girl sounds, but without addressing a specific person (unlike with say 'Romeo') or so it seems. i'm sure this is the point but still. the video makes light of this by revealing she's pretty cute and hitting on random burly Russian blokes, resisting the opportunity to explore a more darker interpretation of the song - despite it's otherwise quite jaunty, upbeat vibe.

'Hush Boy' is sung by Vula Malinga (who also sang on 'Oh My Gosh') btw.
Robyn sings on 'Hey You' although the vocalist on 'Take Me Back To Your House' bears some similarities to her I think.

All of you people hating on "Run 4 Cover" now know EXACTLY how I feel about "Lucky Star".

yeah but dizzee has lines which, like, don't make me cringe with their sheer galumphing non-hilarity. 'run 4 cover' is great in concept but the girl is a v poor sov imitator and if you're aiming for laughs then going "MINGER MINGER MINGER" repeatedly like a failed big brother auditionee is perhaps not the way to go.

i am astonished by the kish kash haterz (though mr snrub has terrible taste and i suspect him of being a massive troll anyway)!

I can't believe so many people heard this back in July.

Anyway i listened to it at a tower listening station and decided immediately to buy it. The single/leadoff track is awesome, although i thought the loverman rap was a little subpar. I'm surprised everyone hates the single so much but I think i just love the disco horns and the vocals/lyrics on it were great! I think I agree mostly with Tim and Dan, although I'm not quite as enamored of Run 4 Cover as Dan is.

I agree its their weakest but hardly a "plz stop recording" moment or anything! Its sort of like they've settled into a comfortable familiarity or something. I'd put this just under Kish Kash and my favorite album is Rooty.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 25 September 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

good cd

and what (ooo), Monday, 25 September 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Need to get this finally. Which I will when payday arrives.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 25 September 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

My admiration for this remains undimmed.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 25 September 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

i was surprised to find that a recent experiment on 'how much stevem likes each jaxx album' threw up 'rooty' as #1 over 'remedy'. experiment was done by marking each track on each album out of 10 and then calculating the percentage from the total score ('crazy itch' still bottom but the gap between each album was not big). this is systems thinking i intend to apply to all albums herewith. you may well laugh, you may well back away nervously.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 25 September 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

Rooty is their best album! I don't find that result particularly surprising.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 September 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yes Rooty is their best album, although not by a particularly appreciable amount. If it wasn't for the fact that their first three albums were so hard to rank against one another, I think people would be less surprised by (and excessively reactive to) Crazy Itch Radio's relative drop in quality.

Perhaps what gives Rooty the edge is that it combines the selling points of the other three albums: Remedy's dancefloor monsters, Kish Kash's intense density and wild eclecticism and Crazy Itch Radio's anything goes celebratory vibe.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 25 September 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

i never actually listened to this

boo berry (dubplatestyle), Monday, 25 September 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

your review was even better than I thought then jess!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 25 September 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

a queston from our viewers -

"did jess do everything he could to avoid the Basement Jaxx Pitchfork self-parody?"

on another note - when did "anything goes celebratory vibe" result in the collective "meh" of the nation?

natedey (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

another question-

who the fuck are you

and what (ooo), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

Nate,

When the "anything goes celebratory vibe" comes at the expense of sterling grooves/songs/production/etc. etc. I guess.

For instance, I'm not sure whether I think "Everybody" is brilliant or disappointing: sometimes its sheer upness seems arbitrary and forced and patchworked together, like the duo were trying to make a "Do Your Thing" Part 2 out of all the leftover discards from other songs, and then, realising that the result was a bit incoherent, scrawled "GET HAPPY!" in permanent marker pen over the top.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

(insert drudge-sirens here) PURPLE FACED RAGE!

sorry, jess, i'll stop joking and let vahid cover that territory - i just thought that line upthread was the funniest thing i'd seen on ilxor since BMP cover art.

"Everybody" is definitely the litmus for me too, Tim, because I'm surprised how much how I feel about the whole album fluctuates with it. But to expect anything less than that upness from BJ also seems kinda absurd. Like I expect and should expect that permanent marker but it instead becomes a sad "it's not you, it's me" situation. It also makes "Keep Keep On," with it's leftover discards so thoroughly transparent, so much more potent.

natedey (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

ROOTY IS NOT THEIR BEST ALBUM!!!!!!

half of it is boring for one thing.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 06:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure we've had this conversation, but which half lex?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 06:54 (nineteen years ago)

most of the ones which aren't the singles (and i find the singles the worst bunch of jaxx singles, too (not counting the new crap)). i really don't find myself returning to or even thinking about rooty v much - it has nothing on remedy or kish kash!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

My mind is boggling that any clutch of singles that contains Romeo and Where's Your Head At? could considered the worst clutch of Jaxx singles.

Rememdy is by far the best from a singles point of view but then its never really held my attention in the final third.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

jaxx singles in order of brilliance:

good luck
red alert

jump and shout
romeo
bingo bango
oh my gosh
jus 1 kiss
where's your head at?
fly life
get me off
..........
do your thing
u don't know me
hush boy

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:41 (nineteen years ago)

No way!

Romeo
Lucky Star
Jump & Shout
Rendez-Vu
Where's Your Head At?
Red Alert
Plug It In
Get Me Off
Good Luck
Fly Life
Jus 1 Kiss
Do Your Thing
Hush Boy
Bingo Bango
Oh My Gosh
Take Me Back To Your House
U Don't Know Me

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

Ugh. Get one proofreader.

This album is still annoying me to fuck but I'm starting to fall for Take Me Back To Your House in a big way, partly because of that feeling of neediness Steve mentions. It falls into that small category of Jaxx tracks that crystallise an emotion while simultaenously feeling really 'up' (see also Good Luck, Romeo and, erm... not much else really).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:47 (nineteen years ago)

the backing vocals in 'romeo' always annoyed me slightly which is why i don't rate it as INSANELY HIGH as you all seem to!

i am looking at the first five songs on my list and thinking "omg pinnacle of music"

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

also i don't like the tune of 'romeo' as much as most jaxx melodies, it's kind of...twee.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

"the backing vocals in 'romeo' always annoyed me slightly"

Ah see this annoys me a bit on "Take Me Back To Your House" but on "Romeo" I couldn't not adore every little bit.

The trancey middle-8 is the best thing ever ever ever ever ever.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

MENTALIST.

ten kebabs maaaaate (fandango), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

sorry Tim, itchy post finger, I previewed but couldn't stop hitting enter X-)

ten kebabs maaaaate (fandango), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 08:14 (nineteen years ago)

found 'Remedy' to be more consistent than 'Rooty' in that most tracks are 8 out of 10s while Rooty fluctuates a bit more but with higher peaks.

i never got round to starting that 'OPO: basement jaxx 'ludes'' thread, but Kish Kash has the best 'ludes!

re 'Everybody', it sounds a bit TOO basic for them and like an out-take from Rooty sessions. needs more bass.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 09:01 (nineteen years ago)

The best 'lude is that brief piano loop after Red Alert.

chap who would dare to contain two ingredients. Tea and bags. (chap), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Kish Kash does have the best 'ludes; it's the only album where I don't skip them.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Jazzalude yes but I would shot Cosmolude personally

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

"Jus 1 Kiss" needs the interlude before it.

Actually I think I like most of the interludes on their albums.

I'm really surprised how high you guys rate "Lucky Star," which I like, but doesn't really touch the others to me.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
I was wrong, Dan was right re: "Run for Cover"

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 20 October 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

I think Andy K's allmusic review is excellent, absolutely spot on (except I disagree about the bonus track).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 21 October 2006 05:57 (nineteen years ago)

I would like that review more had it not made reference to "Cotton Eye Joe".

i should probably listen to this a few more times. only so many hours in the day tho.

bo janglin (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 22 October 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

also, ha ha, i think i just realized how weird it is to have written something like "my pitchfork colleague tim finney"

Your review was quite astonishing considering you never listened to the album jess!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 22 October 2006 06:24 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
I absolutely LOVE this album. It's quite strange because 1 I haven't been listening to music much the last, oh say, ten months (read: baby's in the world) and 2 I used to fucking hate BJ so much. This, however, made me love music again and discover Basement Jaxx ain't that bad. I think one of my favourite tracks on the record is Smoke Bubbles, Hey You and Lights Go Down.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 23 November 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

"Smoke Bubbles" = Lauryn Hill's "The Sweetest Thing"

RODNEY HAVE TOO MANY EMOTHINS!!! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 23 November 2006 10:40 (nineteen years ago)

i'm loving this album too! "take me back to your house" has hit me hard.
