Apparently, that's what the tiny little text in the big black sticker says. The top appears to be a sticker as well, so it looks like once you unwrap it... uh...

Rumor Monger (Uri Frendimein), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

there is no information about that at that link

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

looks more like

The first official release of The Who
in umpteen years

a.b. (alanbanana), Thursday, 22 June 2006 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

what?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 22 June 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

That's weird, it was there before!

Rumor Monger (Uri Frendimein), Thursday, 22 June 2006 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

What the fuck is going on here?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 22 June 2006 10:26 (nineteen years ago)

just wanted to see (1) if anyone would click the link and search for info, (2) if anyone would strain to read the miniscule type, (3) if it would catch on into a massive rumor like the time Guns N' Roses died in a plane crash and all of North America heard about it before the end of the day.

Well, that's fucking stupid, then.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Fucking stupid is his whole schtick.

Half loaf, half pompadour (noodle vague), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

I don't get it.

one month passes...
http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/08/08/ew.mus.who/index.html

so there is a new album! has anyone heard the single? It seems to be not very available in the places I'd go looking for it.

Jesus, look at Daltrey. "BRRRRAAAIIIINS!"

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

Trying...not...to...get...excited....must....keep...calm...

Bamble (Bimble...), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

It's comforting to know The Who will continue making albums long after the two remaining members have died.

Sean Robison (yaratnam), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

Pete has a vaguely Woody Allen expression on his face.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

Worst promotion ever on this thing -- has anyone actually heard it? Imagine a new Stones single mini-album where it's out for a month and no one has bothered to check it out.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

I've seen the odd full-page ad in UK music monthlies, but that's about it. The album is still to come, so maybe that's when there will be something more like a media blitz.

LC (Damian), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

I downloaded the single, but I needed a password which I didn't have. It remains a beautiful mystery.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

There seems to be a PR/promotion problem here. You'd think the first new Who material in 25 years would get a little more buzz.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

It is expensive, too. £3 minimum. Everything else is £1.99 maximum.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps someone could link to it in listenable form, for evaluative purposes only.

The new Townshend reissues look as nice as it is possible for them to look, but they too are expensive.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

i hate the word 'umpteen'

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm. How will we refer to it? '00s WHO?

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

"Mirror Wall" is the only full song on it; it's, eh, okay; lyrics not great, but the music is pretty good. I've only heard a really bad sounding mp3 though sourced from radio.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

"mirror door", sorry

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

There's no US release on the EP.

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

So, did Rumor Monger know something nobody knew but The Who? "Who Farted?" must've been a working title. I like it better.

Butt Dickus (Dick Butkus), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

Saw it at Amoeba today for 8.99 (it IS an import).

Most of the tracks didn't go over 1:30 in length making pretty much a glorified single. I'll wait to see if the album's any good.

Jesus, look at Daltrey. "BRRRRAAAIIIINS!"

Couldn't help but crack up when I was looking at the album in the store. Now I'm never gonna be able to separate Daltrey with Night of the Living Dead.

Sean Robison (yaratnam), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

Tried to listen to it on a listening post - thought it was really great. Turned out to be Johnny Cash. Tried the next button - thought it sounded like you would expect generic 00s WHO to sound. Turned out to be Lilly Allen. Gave up on listening post.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 10 August 2006 05:54 (nineteen years ago)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 August 2006 06:05 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone know what label this is coming out on in U.S.?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 22:58 (nineteen years ago)

Fueled By Ramen

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
leaked

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 4 November 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

so far: first four tracks are fucking awesome, best who album since quadrophenia

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 4 November 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

fifth song is good too

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 4 November 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

this album sounds sincere. I mean they didn't need to do this, and wouldn't have done it if they didn't think it was good, and they were right, it is

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 4 November 2006 08:44 (nineteen years ago)

although, it is a bit confusing why some of these songs are only two minutes long. they could certainly have been a bit longer.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 4 November 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

"leaked?" it's in stores

a.b. (alanbanana), Saturday, 4 November 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

"leaked?" it's in stores

haha didn't someone just do that on another thread?

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 4 November 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Well it's about time someone on this board mentioned this damn album! I didn't even know it was out til I was looking around on Pitchfork (which I assure you I never do - just some crazy accident of recent websurfing). So I went to the record store during my lunch break yesterday to go buy it and kept thinking "how come no one is talking about this on ILM?"

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

i thought it came out on tuesday. shows how often I make it to record stores now.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 4 November 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway I played it for a while in the car on the way home, it sounded good enough I guess. But you see I'm the sort that wishes more songs were sung by Pete. I've always felt that way. Still, I must say Daltrey still has a powerful set of pipes.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

From what I've heard, I like it a lot. It's kind of sad that the first new Who record in 25 years has such little fanfare. I remember the TV being plastered with commercials for It's Hard, there must have been one every ten seconds on MTV.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Saturday, 4 November 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

one thing to note is that the bass and drums are completely workmanlike, which I think is appropriate

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 4 November 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

Listening to it some more now...it's not really much of a "rocker" is it? More somber, mellow, and serious. But it doesn't lose anything by being that way. Yeah I think this is great stuff. I enjoy it.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, so Kate Bush comes back after 12 years and The Who after 24...who comes back after 48 years? The Beatles?

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

"Good news/we've got a hit" - God what a charming and catchy chorus. Isn't it weird though how at least two of the tracks recall Townshend's album with Ronnie Lane?

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

It was almost ten years ago now that I got into the Who. 1997 I believe.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, so Kate Bush comes back after 12 years and The Who after 24...who comes back after 48 years?

Those are very Biblical numbers, this could point to the return of Jesus Christ.

R_S (RSLaRue), Saturday, 4 November 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Hey if the Democrats win in a landslide there's going to be some seroius fucking partying going on over here on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. Is there any hope left for America? GOD I hope so. Can we ever recover? God I hope so.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

The whole point is to humble Dubya, see. That is all that is required right now. Once that has occured, we will deal with the mess.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, this is a Who thread. Please continue talking about this album at length.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 4 November 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Has anyone watched the live DVD that comes with the CD? Interesting? Good? Other?

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 4 November 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

pro: Better than their last album in--what?--1982.
con: They both sound like they've had strokes.

M. V. (M.V.), Saturday, 4 November 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

More consistent than It's Hard, sure, but no "Eminence Front" here (no "Athena" either).

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:33 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, but it's hardly (sic) fair to expect an Eminence Front out of them at this point. That song was just a brilliant accident I think.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'm conflicted on whether to see them at Hollywood Bowl tomorrow night. Yeah I know I know... The point being is that Townshend's guitar playing is just massive this time... Don't know if I'll ever get a chance again (I saw them back in 1982)

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah well you better go, you lucky bastard.

I passed up seeing them here because I had no money at the time and I knew the ticket price would be outrageous.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Sunday, 5 November 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

Saw them last night at the bowl (didn't pay, the wife works for univeral). 'twas far better than I could have expected. Townshend and Daltrey were both in fine form and the new stuff sounded great and was warmly received.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Sunday, 5 November 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

universal, natch

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Sunday, 5 November 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

From the kind of awesome Pete Townshend interview in Rolling Stone a few weeks ago:

"I don't think that the big boomer bands are going to be able to do this much longer. I really don't... I don't want to go out and see Bob Dylan. I don't want to go out and see the Stones. I wouldn't pay money to go see the Who, not even with new songs. I wouldn't pay money to go see Crosby, Stills and Nash. They fucking make me sick. When I say that, what I mean is I'm ageist about it. I don't want to look at these old guys in their self-congratulatory mode... Our audience, our boomer audience, are sustaining it. It's not young kids. People say, 'Oh, I went to a Rolling Stones concert and there were lots of young people there!' Once. They come _once_. I went to see Jimmy Reed _once_. I went to see John Lee Hooker _once_. I went to see Jimmy Smith _once_. I went to see Ray Charles _once_. I just wanted to be able to say I saw him."

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 5 November 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

That's interesting, what Pete says above. The thing is, once the "big boomer bands" stop touring, the concert industry will collapse. Who are the arena bands taking their place? Not too many bands under 40 can fill an arena anymore. You can probably count them on one hand.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Sunday, 5 November 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

'in the ether' is really striking. is that pete on vocals all the way through?

i am not a nugget (stevie), Sunday, 5 November 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

Not too many bands under 40 can fill an arena anymore. You can probably count them on one hand.

Not so sure about this. What kind of ticket sales do the Britney Spearses of the world pull off? The Foo Fighterses? etc.?

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Monday, 6 November 2006 06:32 (nineteen years ago)

the foo fighters cannot sell out an arena the way U2 can

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 6 November 2006 06:33 (nineteen years ago)

What about Green Day? How many can they get?

All The Furniture Is In The Garage (Bimble...), Monday, 6 November 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

green day might be able to

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 6 November 2006 06:40 (nineteen years ago)

Fall Out Boy sold out Shea Stadium just yesterday.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 6 November 2006 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

Who else here likes "A Man In A Purple Dress"?

All The Furniture Is In The Garage (Bimble...), Monday, 6 November 2006 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

I like the "we've got a hit hit HIT, we've got a hit, good news, we got a hit"

wordy rappinghood (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 November 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

i don't really understand why they didn't put the full length versions of that and endless wire on the album and stuck them as bonus tracks at the end

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 6 November 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really understand why they changed the name. Who Farted would've been a great title at this point in their career.

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 6 November 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

"who's left" might have been a better title.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 6 November 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

but there's no mystery in that

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Monday, 6 November 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

lol @ who's left

wordy rappinghood (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

Well, frankly I thought the Who Farted thing was just some photoshop hoax or something. But yeah it would have been great if they'd called it either that or Who's Left. A bit of a sense of humour about it would have been great.

I'm surprised at how few people seem to care about this album.

All The Furniture Is In The Garage (Bimble...), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

Picked up the CD today and am kind of wandering around stupified by the fact that it's good. Nobody I know had the slightest idea that it exists. Very surreal.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

It is indeed a damn good record.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 03:58 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it's really good, the more I listen to it, the more I'm struck by what a bold thing this was for them to do. there are no obvious hits here, no "big rock anthems", it quietly studies what the who have done in the past, revisits it, makes comment on it, and quietly ends. it definitely recalls tommy maybe more than any other album, with the preponderance of acoustic guitar. it's a dignified album for them to go out on if it's the last one (and I'm sure it will be).

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

Significance of "wire & glass"? Terribly boring cover, anyway.

Scorpion Tea (Dick Butkus), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Well the Wire & Glass cover is boring, but I love the cover for Endless Wire, the proper album, which is what we're discussing here, incase that wasn't clear.

A Rush of Cold Blood To The Head (Bimble...), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really starting to appreciate how great Daltrey's vocals are on this (and produced by Billy Nicholls -- kind of interesting). Almost feel tempted to start another thread about the decline of the manly voice in modern rock, but I'm too sleepy to check for existing threads *and* I'm probably thinking mostly of alt rock, rather than chart stuff, and the Who weren't alt, so maybe it's a stupid idea.

But wow, I haven't heard singing like that in a while. Surprised I care so much.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 03:15 (nineteen years ago)

you guys are all making my die to hear this thing. Gonna have to pick it up.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'm really starting to appreciate how great Daltrey's vocals are on this

I just came here to say the same thing! I've honestly never been that crazy about him, Pete's voice is so much better I think. But I've listened to this album a couple of times today and I can only think of one or two songs in the past when I've been so impressed with Daltrey's performance. For the parts that are his on this album, he really puts a lot into every line, never lets up.

And I find I can't complain about the album itself either, at all. It just seems quietly, almost modestly brilliant. Not a bad song on it. I do think it's kindof weird that Pete almost sounds like Tom Waits at the beginning of "In The Ether"! Not sure why he attempted to sing that way. When he gets on the piano like that, though I just turn to mush.

Speaking as someone who was very disappointed in Scoop 3, well I'm just pleased as punch with this. It didn't *have* to be good, but it is, and I'm happy to know Pete still has it in him.

Kid B (Bimble...), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

Just watched the DVD that comes with this. Nothing wrong with it at all, either. Daltrey looks quite young considering how old he must be now. I gotta say I really like Zak Starkey's whole look. He's a rock star all unto himself! Looking at the liner notes, Pete says that because he (Pete) delayed the project, wanting to make sure it was right, Starkey couldn't participate as much on the album cause he was touring/recording with Oasis. I only knew Starkey had been in Johnny Marr's Healers. (shows you how much I follow Oasis anymore) Roger Daltrey's liner notes are also well worth reading. Those who downloaded this didn't get the full deal, I'm afraid.

Kid B (Bimble...), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe Mike Post is actually the guy I thought he was: the one who did Hill Street Blues theme. I bought that 45 when I was a kid. You could buy 7" singles at the nearest pharmacy/drugstore.

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

Also what's this about Curtis Mayfield?

"We climb up high/to the golden station/Curtis Mayfield ain't waiting long"

- Mirror Door

He mentions Johnny Cash and Led Zeppelin in the same song. I happen to think this is fantastic.

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 03:32 (nineteen years ago)

I do think it's kindof weird that Pete almost sounds like Tom Waits at the beginning of "In The Ether"! Not sure why he attempted to sing that way.

i really like it tho. the first time i heard it i sniggered cynically at the waitsian growl, but i think this might be my favourite song on the album... GREAT piano.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

it's too bad starkey didn't drum on the whole record, because the drums on black widow's eyes are the best on the album. he really does have those wild moon rolls down

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

Re: the header. Will The Who still be around in umpteen years?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

Bump. I think it's a shame I'm the only one willing to keep this thread from dying.

Try the song "Tea & Theatre" and then tell me this isn't the best album released all year.

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Saturday, 18 November 2006 03:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I almost feel like this would be getting more attention if the album was a really embarrasing disaster. I still can't quite deal with the Tom Waits vocals on that one track, but otherwise it's definitely at least one of my top 10 albums of the year...and I'm hardly a crazy Who fan.

It did inspire me to finally get a CD of Quadrophenia (which I hadn't heard in a while as my vinyl is packed away). Actually prefer the production on this to that in many ways. Also was reminded how much I love Bell Boy, but that's another thread.

dlp9001 (dlp9001), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Try the song "Tea & Theatre" and then tell me this isn't the best album released all year.

otm. and i think the (relative) lack of attention is due to a certain level of shock that it didn't outright suck balls. the fact that it's more ambitious than anything since quadrophenia (and more fully realized than anything since the who by numbers) just confused the majority of the music press, who probably already had their damning reviews half-written before they heard the record.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Saturday, 18 November 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

probably already had their damning reviews half-written before they heard the record.

OTMFM

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Saturday, 18 November 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, no kidding. I've been listening to this a lot, and... it's not the Who Who--the Live at Leeds/Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy one--but it sounds like they've seriously taken stock of what they've got left, and made something that's actually meaningful to them & by extension... well, me. I kind of love it. That "kind of" may turn out to be unnecessary, too.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 18 November 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

Seeing them play most of the album live with Z. Starkey on drums really pushed me over the top into the "love it like crazy" camp. I will indeed be purchasing the DVD of the 11-4-06 hollywood bowl show that I attented.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Sunday, 19 November 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

I figured out that the beginning guitar part of Endless Wire reminds me of the sound of Red House Painters' Mark Kozelek's guitar. I swear it's the same guitar sound, same production, more or less.

One thing I especially like about this album is the sequence of tracks. Because you're listening and then all of a sudden you think it's just begun to repeat itself and gone back to track one - when Fragments of Fragments starts. And then you realize that no, your CD player didn't just magically know you wanted to play it all again from the start, no...in fact, there are a few even more amazing tributaries to navigate such as the stellar "We Got A Hit" and of course, "Endless Wire".

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Sunday, 19 November 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

Also I plan to fly to San Diego to see them, so fuck yooz. They're not fucking getting away from me. If this is the last chance I have, then so be it. I'm going.

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Sunday, 19 November 2006 02:27 (nineteen years ago)

Despite my drunkenness, I've found a suitable ticket and an agreeable airline ticket, too. It's the day before my birthday, their gig. All I need is a hotel, but that's the least of my worries. I'd sleep in an alley to see them. They won't leave this continent without my presence, mark my words. They will not leave here without me. Not now, not ever, not without me just once with me, they will be with me.

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Sunday, 19 November 2006 03:10 (nineteen years ago)

AND DOESN'T THE GUITAR AT THE BEGINNING OF "2000 YEARS" SOUND LIKE LED ZEPPELIN CIRCA LED ZEP III? EH???

AND DOESN'T ROGER DALTREY JUST EXCEED YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF HIM TWICE OVER?

SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT CARING! SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Sunday, 19 November 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

They'll not leave this continent without me, mark my words.

Umpire Teen (Bimble...), Sunday, 19 November 2006 03:14 (nineteen years ago)

It's an excellent album. Sad I hadn't heard it before they played in NYC this past September. Add to that the fact that I d/l'ed their Hyde Park show from this year and it's great.

three months pass...
So I saw the Who last night. It was pretty good. They did this great song I hadn't known of before called "Real Good Lookin' Boy". I think it's supposed to be about Elvis.

I also tried listening to their latest album again just to be sure...and yes I still love it. Much more than their performance last night.

I mean just think how many years those guys have been performing all those songs in front of all those people, night after night after night. You have to respect them for that alone. I can't believe that "My Generation" is 40 years old.

name another band/artist that been around as long that can open a show with their first single ("i can't explain") and close it with the last song on their last album ("tea and theatre"). i mean, convincingly.

Heheh! You know it man! I was so pleased to hear I Can't Explain, actually - it's not one of those songs by them I ever think about but I like it, in fact I couldn't get it out of my head the day after the show.

I thought their visuals on the giant screen behind them were fantastic, too. Best visuals I've ever seen at a concert. Pictures of people in the 60's...a few 70's punks...old pictures of the band...and just plain animated sort of art stuff.

I remember when I first got into Who's Next. I was swinging on children's swings in the dark next to my apartment complex. There was no one around at all, and I had it playing in my headphones. Suddenly these songs that I used to hear on classic radio all the time in my childhood made sense in a way they never had before.

I thank goodness this thread has the word "umpteen" in it, otherwise it would be unsearchable.

I can't seem to get over the Who of late. The two songs "Old Red Wine" and "Real Good Looking Boy" have obsessed me, and the Endless Wire album only comes in a close second. People write that album off, but what is so wrong with "We Got A Hit" or the title track?

I can only conclude that there are some people in this world who are just mad fans of Pete Townshend's songwriting and other people who just aren't.

I mean what did you guys expect out of them anyway, hiphop? I admit the album isn't perfect, there are a few songs where I nearly fall asleep, but that's why it's so great when the next brilliant song comes along after these and wakes me up to such beautiful and compelling music.
