I keep seeing their name everywhere and last.fm lists them as the hottest thing of the moment (in terms of the surge in numbers of listens). So who are they, what do they sound like and should we check them out?

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

they've got some amazing songs - 'let's make love and listen death from above', 'music is my hot hot sex', 'fuckoff is not the only thing you have to show'. at their best they're fantastically fun electropop - the album is disappointing though, too much bog standard indie rock (especially as they ditched some of their more exciting portuguese language material in favour of it).

i imagine they're very good live.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

The single is great.

I was thinking about getting the album but the 'bog standard indie rock ' is a bit offputting.

You can download the single and watch the entertaining video here

Yeah, but it's the Lex! Anything that doesn't sound like Ciara is "bog standard indie rock"!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:45 (nineteen years ago)

I think they are awesome but I've barely listened to the second half of the album at all.

'Meeting Paris Hilton' is terrific.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Dare I ask the storyline of that particular ditty?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for the link. Listening to Let's make Love and it is indeed pretty great. DFA for teens or something.

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

i want to hear more - i'll prob get the album soonish.

(that's not the best mix of LMLDFA. IMHO)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

A track that isn't on the album, but which you really must track down, is 'Superafim'.

They are playing the UK soon:

2nd Nottingham Stealth
3rd Glasgow Indian summer festival
4th York Fibbers
5th Manchester Roadhouse
6th Leeds Faversham
8th London 93 Feet East, Adventures From Home
9th Brighton Audio
10th London Dingwalls (with 1990s)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

YES to 'superafim' - also 'computer heat'.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

There's a band called The 1990s?

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

That version of LMLALDFA on Pitchfork is the Spank Rock remix, isn't it? The album version is much better - its faster and has more fizz to it and occasionally lurches into this cool dirty fuzz-bass schaffel thing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

Good spot on the link--remember seeing a video a few weeks ago and really enjoying it, it's made my day to know I can have the mp3 for free (legitimately).

(xposts)

Matt, there's the album version on the page too.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

I only listened to the album version. I like the dirty fuzz-bass.

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Thursday, 3 August 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, album version >> spank rock remix. The remix seems to strip away a lot of the playfulness.

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

I like the remix of the single, but can't see what the fuss is about with the rest of their stuff.

alext (alext), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

They do a short, jokey version of Madonna's "Hollywood" which shows that behind Madonna's awful serious delivery, there's a lovely, silly pop-punk song in there waiting to get out.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

Live they are very very punk rock. Three guitars. Still amazing., but it takes a moment for it to sink in.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

One of the year's best singles, but the album is rather disappointing.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm with everyone else on the album, it's a bit disappointing given the strength of the singles. And I didn't know they actually had Porteugese stuff they chose not to put on, that's too bad! I want to make a graph showing the correlation between them singing more in Portuegese and getting better reviews.

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

This album is a fucking blast. Not totally winning from front to back, but the hit:shit ratio is very favorable. Recommended to people who don't hate The Teaches of Peaches, "Genius of Love", Le Tigre and the B-52s.

Gotta be willing to absorb a certain ESL quality in the lyrics & vocal delivery. More than occasionally goofy, even wince-inducing. But if you get your mind right, that's half the fun.

Stuff I like:
"CSS Suxxx"
"Let's Make Love and Cetera"
"Fuckoff is Not the Only and Cetera"
"Meeting Paris Hilton" (which really shoulda been called "The Bitch Said Yeah")
"Off the Hook"
"Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex"
"This Month, Day 10"

"Art Bitch", on the other hand, is a problem. Here the wincey dumbness gets way outta hand. I hate this song the way I imagine other folks hate the whole album. Forewarned...

Agree with Lexx that the duff tunes on the album suffer from their bland indie-rockness. More discopop, in this case, = more better.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

if these girls were from brooklyn, say like Avenue D, they'd be called what they are , electroclash

kevin barking (arghargh), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I don't hate the whole album, I just wish they had leaned more toward the "Let's Make Love" sound overall.

And I love "Art Bitch!"

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

"Let's Make Love and Cetera"
"Fuckoff is Not the Only and Cetera"

For a second I'm all 'Peter Cetera?'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

And I love electroclash! Fuck it I don't care anymore!

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

everybody OTM on the LP. looking forward to seeing them live.

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

I love songs where the dominant instrument is keyboards then you watch the video and everybody's playing a guitar.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

Live they are very very punk rock.

when I saw them live I felt like they could be a decent punk(ier) band if they wanted to, but instead they are bent on being a shitty new wave dance band. (partly my own bias, I'm just sick of that style. also, singer's shtick gets old.)

dmr (Renard), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

i played with them in brazil last year and there wasn't an ounce of electroclash in their performance.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

'art bitch' is completely rubbish, not as bad as 'patins' though.

'meeting paris hilton' is good but suffers from not being as great as paris's own stuff.

it's electroclash but...sweatier? less po-faced? funkier? i imagine css grin a lot more than any electroclash dude ever did.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd say it's more electroclashy than electroclash. (Note that I'm neither endorsing "electroclashy" as valid usage, nor encouraging others to attempt this very tricky maneuver.)

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

Lex, do you like 'Alala'? I ask because it sounds like Sonic Youth with an electro tinge. She might almost be consciously aping Kim Gordon for a bit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

I don't hate the whole album, I just wish they had leaned more toward the "Let's Make Love" sound overall.

My sentiments exactly.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

'art bitch' is completely rubbish, not as bad as 'patins' though.

The original version is great - for some reason they recorded a new backing track for the album, turning one of the highlights of the Brazilian LP into poo.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

lead singer just seems fame obsessed, I like electroclash too eppy, i just don't see any MILD craft in their song writing. too self referential and tedious

kevin barking (arghargh), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

HEY is it too early for an electroclash revival?

Das Spiel ist aus für Baaderonixx (baaderonixx), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

apparently not

kevin barking (arghargh), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

It's no more electroclash than Rachel Stephens ffs.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

i can't really remember 'alala', matt!

my liking for sonic youth is rather overrated really, it's not as if i listen to them very much. i just approve in general, and really like a few songs.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

i played with them in brazil last year and there wasn't an ounce of electroclash in their performance

So stirmonster, did you ever have the distinct pleasure of meeting Marina from Bonde Do Role?

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

lead singer just seems fame obsessed

Dude, a) how can you tell this, and b) why does it matter?

The other things are fair enough, but really, who gives a shit how ambitious they appear to be?

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I wanna be famous too! Is there a place I can sign up?

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

So stirmonster, did you ever have the distinct pleasure of meeting Marina from Bonde Do Role?

sadly not. they played here a few weeks ago but i was out of town.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Lex liking Sonic Youth confuses me greatly. I know there's a woman in the band, but so many guitars! So indie!

I wouldn't mind an electroclash revival! I listen to electroclashy ((c) Adam Beales) stuff a lot. I just got the new Adult. album, for example.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

Me too, I'm ready for the revival (although I wouldn't really classify the new Adult. lp as electroclash, more like nü-deathrock)

Das Spiel ist aus für Baaderonixx (baaderonixx), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

I love the single, and the album is likeable too, this is the kind of album I've been waiting for a while: I cannot have enough of this electroclash/discopunk thing, a shame, I know.
They will tour with Ladytron in the USA, gonna be good gigs, I bet.

zeus (zeus), Thursday, 3 August 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

I had a fairly good time watching them perform before Diplo.

enjoy bell woods (sjjd111), Friday, 4 August 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone know if it's possible to find the original Brazilian release anywhere (so long as it is not astronomically priced)?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 4 August 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

What's the tracklisting for this album? I listened to it in the morning and I've got Superafim on mine, and a few Portugese-language tracks. I'm confused now. (Admittedly this a download from ages ago).

Art Bitch is a brilliantly rubbish joke. Especially the bit that goes "suck suck suck my art hole".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 August 2006 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

It turns out the version I have is the Brazilian album. Hooray!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 August 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, and as I understand it, the backing track for "Art Bitch" is completely different on the American release. Now, I like the music on the American "Art Bitch", but the whole thing just doesn't work, somehow. Comes across forced and annoying.

Lots of folks who've heard the original seem to think the American release ruins the song. Can you describe the original?

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

Big scuzzy two-chord rock riff, basically. It's great.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 August 2006 10:43 (nineteen years ago)

Are those live dates August or September?

I'll definitely go on Wednesday if it's Aug.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

Are those live dates August or September?

I'll definitely go on Tuesday if it's Aug.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

You know what I mean. What day is it today? EH? Oh.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, does the Anglicised album version of Music Is My Hot Hot Sex have that amazing bit when she starts rapping in Portuguese over that big chunky guitar riff? Because that's the best moment in any of their songs and I will be VERY ANGRY if they've removed it.

Another Portuguese track disgracefully removed is Bezzi, which is fantastic.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

Heh. I found a copy of This Month, Day 10 on a sampler about a year and a half ago, and spent all sorts of time trying to get more music out of them. Now all of the sudden they're booked at the Pitchfork festival and their albums are all over slsk and rapidshare.
And for the first time in a long time, I'm feeling annoyed at the sudden success of a band that I liked a lot (and put on mixtapes left and right), both because friends who blew them off as "fake indie disco bullshit" now love them, and because I shoulda pitched harder on selling stories about them before the press explosion.
Ah well. Still a fun band, and This Month, Day 10 is fantastic.

js (honestengine), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Re: Matt

Yeah, they kept the Portugese rapping. Agree that it pretty much makes the song. One of the coolest moments on the record.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

The original album is far superior.Removing Superafim was a big mistake but we cant be listening to that foreign stuff now can we? Thank you sub pop

two weeks pass...
I saw them live and really hated them.

Just found them very uniteresting and not really that good at all.

I was very drunk during their set though. . .

Thomas Mehlt (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Friday, 25 August 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

i guessed there must be a css thread already...

absomalutely loving them right now! especially, it seems, the songs the lex thinks are rub. ah well.

did an email interview thing with Lovefoxxx last week - it's kind of bonkers:

Hey! here it is... these questions were great!

1. Who are you, where are you and how are you?
I'm Lovefoxxx I sing on CSS! We are now in San Francisco, we had two
days off which was amazing and tonight is our show! I am great! Every
time when someone ask me how am I doing I think of that New Order's
"True Faith", it just pops in my head out of nowhere@

2. How did CSS come to be?
Ira wanted to form a band with people she liked to party with. She
didn't think of "the best guitar player i know", so she just put the
people together. we all knew each other from seeing in bars and clubs.

3. Please describe the band to the uninitiated.
We are six friends and we want to make you dance.

4. Have you ever wanted to fit in?
Not at all. I'm feeling some kinda energy now that I use to feel in
the beggining of the band... We do know that this is the best thing
that ever happened to us. We don't need to fit in because there is a
lot of people who loves us just the way you are, you know? And this is
the true love.

5. What was the first record you bought, and what was the last?
First record: Was the soundrack of Romeo and Juliet, I use to have a
crush on Leonardo Di Caprio when I was 12. I don't have a big music
background, my father use to listen to a K7 tape of Queen and then
KITARO... My last bought was the album Mobius Beard From Copy.

6. Which bones have you broken and how?
Hahahahahahhahahahaha. I never broke a bone. Maybe it must be my half
japanese bones. Bolder and stronger, you know? But I almost got blind
once from being close to a helium celindrer that exploded. One of my
front tooth are a bit fucked up from crashing my face with the bike
and I'm full of scars baby.

7. If you could live in any country other than your own, which
would it be?
Can you ask me this again in january? Because by then we will have
toured all over the world.

8. Tell me a story about going on tour.
Every time we get to a new city, and it's a beautiful place we give
each other a look and we say "Who could tell?!!? Who would ever
tell?". In portland I got so drunk that I rolled in the bushes and I
got all dirty. I came back to the bus to sleep other wise i'd end up
doing shit. I started to clean myself with baby whipes, Ira knocked
the bus door and I went to open that for her with my socks and
underwear. She started to laugh and I wanted to climb a tree. I did
and end up falling in the floor and started to cry because I thought I
had broke my head and died. Then I started to laugh and got inside the
bus, put a t shirt on and slept like a baby.

9. How sad are you that Death From Above 1979 have split up?
I really would like to listen to brand new songs... but I got that a
long time ago. I read they were going to record the next album on
august 2005, and c'mon? It's sad... but I really like MSTRKRFT and we
met Sebastian in Toronto and he was so nice! I know he has another
band... I can't wait to give it a first listen! It's sad because they
had one of the best logos... (after AC/DC)

10. How come your English is better than many English people's?
Really? Even after this interview? That's sweet. Thank you. We all
learned a lot by watching tv: Beavis and Butthead, Seinfeld... Ana's
english is pretty much like South Park. Mostly when she is drunk!

11. What does Sub Pop mean to you?
A pumping heart in love.

12. How much do you worry about being bored?
What kinda question is this?! Hahahahhaha. I never thought about it.
Maybe I shouldn't!

13. Marks out of 10 for Paris Hilton's debut single please. Have
you met her?
Ana always says that that song is just like if Debby harry got run
over by a car back and forth than the tsunami hit her. Wich is cool.
We didn't meet her! I can't wait to play this song in LA, I think it
will make so much sense!

14. Festivals or gigs?
Ana says that festivals are like ripping a bandaid really fast. I
agree. I think festivals hmmmmm... We feel it in the bloooooood!

15. Dream collaboration?
Afrika Bambaataa! Beastie Boys!!!!!

16. When was the last time you threw a CD across the room like a
Frisbee?
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA AHHAHAHAHAHAHHAH I LOVE YOU!
I use to do this all the time on my apartment in são paulo! The last
time it was just before finishing with packing the case! I use to
throw ugly free things I got from mail! Like ugly plastic dolls.

17. How would you react to people saying you're not being serious?
We don't care... We had to be serious at school otherwise teachers
would complain to our parents. And we didn't care back then, why
caring now?

18. Who's in your top 8?
Our friends Camila and Carlinhos, the 1190's, Bonde do Role, Sub Pop,
Slag Records, Peaches, Gossip and YOU! (see, our friends Camila and
Carlinhos count as ONE)

19. Cosmetic surgery – yes or no?
If it's going to make the world a better place, why not?

20. Can you imagine the world without the Internet?
BOOOOOOORING like living in an endless sunday afternoon when it's also
holiday in the countryside of Minas Gerais. (you should google it)

21. What's wrong with being sexy?
Who's sexier for you: Paris Hilton or Sophia Coppola? That's the
question.

I've been loving this album for weeks. I can't tell what's wrong with it, other than not having a lot of High Art pretension (and I tend to like High Art pretension, as long as it's not prog). Let's Make Love is great. Art Bitch is great. Meeting Paris Hilton is great. Music Is My Hot Hot Sex is great. Patins is great, too. (This Day, Month 10 is a little less than great, but so what?)

Many people say they're better live, but I would probably be arrested if I went to see them in person. The album is fine. Lovefoxxx is adorable.

(Also -- keyboards on album vs. guitars on video and live: the keyboard player quit.)

Lovefoxxx seems like a nice girl.

is the original release of this really hard to get hold of? I want some karmic recompense for buying that Robyn album too soon (and all the vinyl bits I bought last year and should have just waited for to inevitably arrive on CD...)

fandango, Thursday, 22 March 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

and reading that Bonde de Role actually toured with them last year?? waaaay too much cuteness in one room! :-o

fandango, Thursday, 22 March 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Before hearing either, I saw CCS live with their fellow Brazilians Bonde Do Role. CCS looked and sounded like generic hipsters playing rock songs and I was kind of bored. Then Bonde Do Role came on dancing everywhere, shouting catchy hooks over Alice in Chains samples and bongos, stage diving. It was one of the best shows I've seen.

I totally forgot about CCS for the longest time, until I wound up getting their album on a whim. There's electronic drums, great lyrics, awesome crunchy guitars and riffs. It's an amazing album. Surprisingly, Bonde Do Role didn't really work on album. It just sounded like their tinny voices over obvious samples.

filthy dylan, Thursday, 22 March 2007 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't even know Bondo... had an album, I just saw the video for their new single last night and was way smitten (and CSS have just ground me down one great song at a time -especially- the guitary ones)... also Tim Finney's review of that new Baile Funk compilation kinda stuck in my thoughts... I'm VERY behind on this curve aren't I? ha!

This is too complicated. What was the Barack Obama part of it?

_Rockist__Scientist_, Monday, 10 March 2008 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

(Oh wait, last sentence. I bailed out early.)

_Rockist__Scientist_, Monday, 10 March 2008 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Barack & Obama are two of the search tags for that video clip, as are iPod and Apple. But that can't account for all of those views either. (xpo-oh, ok)

god forbid anything besides the mind-bendingly horrible evolution of dance should be at the top

You'd think Lovefoxxx could do much better than "that bloke out of The Klaxons".

I just now got the first record and man it's great! A lot more hooks than I thought I'd find and a fair bit more variety. I figured "Let's Make Love" and "Alala" would be the peaks but "Music Is My Hot Hot Sex" is an instant hit for me. Yeah, what's the scoop on the new one?

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 26 July 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

The new one is an average indie-pop-electro-punk album, with some mediocre songs. Not very bad, but not too interesting after the first one.

Saw them last night. Tbh the first half of the set didn't really grab me, but I've always had a crush on Lovefoxxx and she didn't disappoint. She's an amazing performer. Lots of awesome costume changes. At one point she had a shirt on that said "I <3 kyoto". All the old singles were played at the end of the set and it ended on a really fun high note.

Sleigh Bells opened. It was pretty rad as well. At one point the guitarist and lead singer were thrashing around so much that she got slammed in the head w the guitar and began bleeding profusely. She got a towel and made it through another 2 or 3 songs, even crowd surfing, before packing it up. The towel was completely covered in blood by the end. A pretty hardcore show!

What's the new song called?

I heard "Alala" the other night for the first time in a few years and it still rules.

New record Planta is a fun electro-disco pop album, not as ambitious as the last one so far but solid and funky, including a song that is half reggaeton and half dubstep. Damn I love them so much.

Fuckity fuck I found out a day too late that Rough Trade & Sub Pop did a special 500 copy pressing of the debut and it's already gone.

Eh, if anyone cares, I was wrong. There are still copies available at the US Rough Trade site.

had no idea this was one of those "sell high" kind of albums.
