Rick Ross - Port Of Miami

i loved the header on Makkada's Voice review: Welcome To Miami, Have Some Cocaine.

Though coke-rap elicits a big fucking YAWN with me, I love how his big-boss persona fits with the beats, which all have this organ-heavy, sun-bleached vibe that all sound like the Miami Vice soundtrack to me (especially "You Belong To City" and "In The Air Tonight"!!!!). or at least the Scarface soundtrack (which the first song samples).

And Akon's guest chorus is totally washed out in that Phil Collins way. Can't believe this hasn't been jumping off more.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Sunday, 3 September 2006 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man: "organ-heavy"?! I have to hear this asap; I don't even care how often he rhymes Ross with boss

(Coke-rap still has a place in my heart, which is, in a few ways, a little ironic)

Roque Strew (RoqueStrew), Monday, 4 September 2006 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

TALKING TO HER LIKE A BOY ON MY SPACE
TAKE HER TO A NICE PLACE
WITH A FIREPLACE

Worst lyrics I've ever heard. I love it on some songs where he shout says his name over the chorus, it's as though he's admitting even he doesnt give a shit about the lyrics. Anyone can rhyme like rick ross.

rick ross's whole aesthetic is so awesome, he looks like he was made in a lab to be a big kingpin drug rapper dude, looks the part, sweet videos, great voice, great beats...just wish he was a little better at actually rapping. hustlin' is...the shit...though

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

I hear this all the time, that Rick Ross can't rap but has a great voice, I don't understand this at all. He has a terrible voice.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, he can't rap, yeah, but his voice sucks too.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

yeah with a voice like that he'd be laughed out of grand buffet

what is the point of a zing that only a the recipient of the zing understands, and doesn't think is particularly funny? whose benefit is that for?

the special he did for hbo is great though

J0rdan S., Monday, 28 January 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

i think ross' problem is that he sounds best over fast beats like "we takin over" and "holla at me" but all his singles are all "gothic synths"

not to mention that he only has one verse on those other songs

J0rdan S., Monday, 28 January 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

his main problem is he's a shitty rapper, m@tt is otm

see, coulda been so much more direct about it instead of beating around the bush with your usual "you like x therefore your opinion doesn't matter" bullshit. so do you seriously like Rick Ross's voice, dude, or are you just being sassy? i understand where someone like Jeezy the voice and the delivery kinda overshadow the rhymes sometimes, but I don't hear that at all with Ross.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 March 2008 05:52 (seventeen years ago)

so why are dudes like briehan clowning this like it's a paul barman album even though they liked the first one? i mean the beats are all really good but he gets a bunch of great hooks out in his own right, and i mean the rapping isn't great (duh) but he gets in a few good lines and he sounds pretty good in general.

i mean it seems like the party line on this is like "omg this is so depressing all this awful materialism corporate machinery" from dudes who jizz bombed american gangster and it doesn't make much sense to me, its just a totally listenable rap album imo

I want a re-evaluation of "The Boss"

I remember a lot of hate/ambivalence toward this song when it came out. BUT (and I know you all value my opinion so much) it's one of the hottest rap tracks of the year, best T-Pain guest ft. on a single of 08 and one of THE BEST beats of the year! there i said it

i wonder if he just got better at rapping or just can afford a better ghostwriter now?

something def happened. do you guys think he writes at all?

be on the treadmill - uh! - like OK GO (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 21 March 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

i've been thinking about that tbh, i mean i dont know who would be ghosting for him now that wasn't ever before... it's not like his numbers had fallen off or anything. maybe smitty? idk what his verses are like but he's a notorious miami ghostwriter

the name's ban. suggest ban (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 21 March 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

then again— and noz alluded to this in a post about soulja boy— rap culture in the internet era doesn't really allow for rappers to improve as writers. i mean "something def happened" with lil wayne around tha carter but if 19 year old wayne dropped tomorrow he'd have been clowned off the face of the planet and his career as we know it would never happen

so, yeah, maybe ross is getting better as a writer

the name's ban. suggest ban (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 21 March 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

so (ghostwriting aside) this will def. be his best album and everything that's come out sounds really great, but i've realized that this is probably gonna flop in comparison to Trilla. last time he had a pretty huge debut considering that "Speedin" and "The Boss" really weren't that big

"Magnisficent" is not really cutting it. unless "Maybach Music 2" becomes a big hit some time before the release date i don't see this being a success as far as sales go, which sucks cuz it seems like the best music this guy has ever made

crab ringgoon (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 04:43 (sixteen years ago)

he'll still break 200 or 300 gs imo which is pretty good at this point i think

ilx's funniest posts, hosted by otm bergeron (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 05:05 (sixteen years ago)

no way.

crab ringgoon (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 05:20 (sixteen years ago)

he's never had that many big singles man - "speedin" was a huge flop, didn't even break the hot 100 or chart on rap. "the boss" was a top 20 hit but it peaked at 5 on rap and "magnificent" is currently at 6 on rap as well as 15 on r&b

"hustlin" and "push it" have awful chart numbers, there's just something about him that makes him a force as an album artist and not really as a singles one. not to mention that 50 has kept ross' name EVERYWHERE this year - and as they say there's no such thing as bad press.

ilx's funniest posts, hosted by otm bergeron (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 05:25 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, yeah, good points. I hope you're right. I guess it's just that I haven't heard "Magnificent" once anywhere and the buzz around this album is very internet rap fan-heavy which never bodes well for sales. he did surprise everyone last time with his first week sales so we'll see

crab ringgoon (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 05:33 (sixteen years ago)

just being playful and friendly (some dude), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

i'm listening to this now. lol how did he get all those big names on the album?! he has that much pull?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

Rick Ross is, for whatever awful reason, a popular recording artist and a top priority at Def Jam. it's not like anyone on this album is out of his league, Kanye and Ne-Yo and Wayne will guest on any old major label bullshit.

just being playful and friendly (some dude), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

rick ross is one of the only rappers who still does big numbers. kind of inexplicably

autogucci cru (deej), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

he's famous

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

plies?!?!

lex pretend, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

yeah plies album last year did serious #s. i like him in an old school major label critically ignored but not insufferable rap star way

autogucci cru (deej), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, listening to his entire album is insufferable cuz his for the ladiez tracks are so o_O/lol but as a personality hes pretty alright

also his new song w/ gucci is the shit

autogucci cru (deej), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

isn't gucci the most famous rapper alive or something, deej?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

plies didn't have two albums released last year for no reason

GOON carter cash (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 28 April 2009 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

Gucci hasn't released a studio album since he became rap's biggest name, whiney. rock critics should just accept that they'll never get 'the masses' amirite?

apparently "Lay Back" ft Robin Thicke was the SIXTH single from DTR??? it says it came out in Oct., what a terrible time to release an incredible summer jam that could have been a huge hit imo

one year passes...

http://www.vulture.com/2014/01/rick-ross-sues-lmfao-over-catchphrase.html

this strikes me as funny because:

a) i was talking to my brother in Wisconsin last week about the snow, and he said "everyday I'm shufflin'" and i was like "ahhh, nice Rick Ross reference" and he went "that's Rick Ross? i thought it was LMFAO" and it turned out he's never heard "Hustlin'"

b) is the "every day I'm hustlin'" loop actual Ross's voice? it always sounded like someone else to me and The Runners always seemed to sample those slowed-down vocal loops from other songs so i kinda assumed it was from some obscure song i hadn't heard before.
