but i just hooked my subwoofer up last week, so maybe i should try it again.

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Monday, 11 September 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

i was going to suggest part 2 of lindstrom's six-hour "shibuya FM x lowrider" epic

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Monday, 11 September 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

actually i have no idea.

boredom to the left, babylon to the right (fandango), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

a bit early aren't we?

well, mixed up in the hague was recently re-released.

jokes aside, it is probably this. (though i have not heard it yet)

what is the date on the lindstrom mix? what are everyone's favorite hip hop mixtapes?

breakfast pants (disco stu), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

i have been reading this message board for about 2 years and have never posted because i don't really know that much about what you are all talking about, but i'm drunk and don't really care what i say. i think the best dj mix of this year is sasha's live mix at avalon(los angeles), june 24. he uses ableton live during his set and it is just amazing. besides richie hawtin's transitions series, this is the best ableton live set set/album i've heard. a must listen. he recored himself as he was playing and then handed the mix out to the crowd at the end of the night.

jeff bergeron (bergeronyoface), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

"jokes aside, it is probably this. (though i have not heard it yet)"

OMG HENRIK SCHWARZ DJ KICKS!

Neat looking tracklisting, although I could wish he had more of his own stuff on it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 05:01 (nineteen years ago)

Kings of Snap IS good.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

That Henrik Schwarz looks so good it might kill me. He has Cymande on it!

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 05:12 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, is Rub 'n Tug's Campfire '06 or '05? I did love that. Also Selzer and Simonetti's "Crazy Rhythms" was great.

Otherwise, Casssy. The Kiki one is totally overrated.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 05:13 (nineteen years ago)

Cd-wise: Kiki of course (overrated because it's gooooood.)
But Villalobos @ Awakenings is way better than anything released on cd.

Oh yeah and I love the second hour of the Booka Shade Essential Mix. Just perfect.

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

I missed that Booka Shade Essential Mix :-(

boredom to the left, babylon to the right (fandango), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

I love that Modernist Collectors Series Pt. 1 a lot.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

interested in part 2 of that series, looks like one for the cosmic/beardo set.

genital hyphys (haitch), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Tiga Essential Mix

boredom to the left, babylon to the right (fandango), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

under-appreciated Fabric mixes:

Global Communication
Wiggle
Cut Copy

don't really have the capacity to do them justice here, but they stayed on my player for a long time (esp Cut Copy - couldn't get the damn thing off my player)

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

I'll have to agree with Grady. The Rub 'n' Tug Fabric mix is pretty fuckin awesome. Not as ragged as the Campfire mix, but loveably unpretentious and, well, just super-danceable.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

Crazy Rhythms mix was 2005...but as it's the best mix of all time, surely it's the best mix of 2006.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

this henrik schwarz mix is pretty fantastic on first listen

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

so who the hell is this guy? he seems to have only one trick for his own productions (deep house + long, achy breaky horn lines) but its a good trick.

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

Please share all lindstrom sets.

MRZBW (MRZBW), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Jess, re Schwarz, you've probably already heard his remix of Wei Chi's "Faces & Phases" on the first Body Language mix, but you should also check out his beautiful percussive remix of Alex Smoke's "Don't See The Point", plus "Leave My Head Alone Brain", "Jismi 2006 (Mix 3)" (which is more minimal, sort of like to Schwarz as "Rej" is to Ame) and "Where We At" (his amazing collaboration with Ame and Dixon with the vocals from Derrick Carter's "Where U At"). Oh, and his remix of Tosca's "Superrob", which condenses a lot of the same tricks as the "Take A Walk In My Shoes" mix down to 5 minutes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

haha this mix is pretty much cosigns vahid's "beardo = the new trip-hop" theory.

xpost: thanx tim.

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently he also released a live album last year that I would love to hear - he's kinda my new obsession.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

can i also nominate shit robot's dfa radio mix?

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

Villalobos- Awakenings Festival set
Luciano- Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi 2

and what the fuck is going on with y'all when you haven't mentioned Kreucht und Fleucht?

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 00:04 (nineteen years ago)

uh, because it came out in 2005?

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

seriously guys, shit robot radio mix. it's like classic records goes down the k-hole.

also this switch mix rocked the first half of my year

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

whooops ... this one

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

yeah those were both good!

genital hyphys (haitch), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

"interested in part 2 of that series, looks like one for the cosmic/beardo set."

from daniel wang to throbbing gristle in 5 steps.

so no noms for better with a spoonful of leather? it's one of my faves for sure. black sabbath disco.

tim finnizzle check your email.

"this henrik schwarz mix is pretty fantastic on first listen"

jealous!

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:29 (nineteen years ago)

haha i think i'd already call it (on, like, the fifth or sixth listen so far today) my favorite dj mix of 2006. sadly 50% of the tracklist is pre-2006, of course. but it's certainly the first DAHNCE dj mix this year that i've actually felt like playing more than once, certainly the only one i've felt like playing multiple times in a row.

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

the section that runs luther davis group-->a. russell-->womack and womack is particularly lovely. not quite sure what he's doing to the russell (prolly just EQ tricks) but it actually sounds like a pretty tuff little unit now. i never woulda pegged it for a dancefloor track. the luther davis group track is one of the few DIGGIN IN THE CRATES BEARDO NUGGETS i've heard so far that actually sounds like it deserves to be re-found.

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:38 (nineteen years ago)

"it's like classic records goes down the k-hole"

that is quite a recommendation there. is it like schwarz's remix of induceve? ("breathe out, breathe in, it's time to begin")

i am glad people are feeling schwarz. IMO he's the awesome (as opposed to the typically rote) middle ground in the maelstrom of minimaltechhouse this year.

also, +1 to the cassy contingent. (who is also much the same (hotness in the center of the sticky bun)) (but even heavier and deeper)

xp

breakfast pants is pretentious (disco stu), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, dude sounds like he's doing bad karaoke when he gets to the chorus, but it's a totally charming mishmash of EVERY DISCO CLICHE EVER: chicken scratch, cheesy strings, synth "wow" noises, horns, party whistles. and then this gorgeous echoplex guitar solo. i think if he could actually sing well it might be too cheesy.

xp

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

and before all that there's drexciya and robert hood!

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:52 (nineteen years ago)

oy, i should've wrote minimaltechbeardohouse up there.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I was thinking that - re Schwarz and "middle ground" - earlier myself, the way he seems to tie together so many of the different threads perfectly, Villalobos meets Feedelity etc.

In a similar but subtler way it's what I like about Ame too - the way they bring house back into minimal (although for them it's more like adding minimal to their house)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

henrik schwarz is not the first dj to put pulsinger's "claire" and a drexciya track on a disc w/ cymande and pharoah sanders

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 04:41 (nineteen years ago)

also if you like the jazzy techno stylings of patrick pulsinger's "claire", you'll LOVE the 2-disc mo'wax "excursions" compilation!

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

I have this notion that this Jerome Sydenham mix could be my favourite mix of the year, though having not actually heard it yet throws a spanner in the works perhaps. Can anyone report back?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 05:14 (nineteen years ago)

i got a promo, listened to it once and promptly put it away ... it's sort of ... underwhelming.

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 05:45 (nineteen years ago)

vahid perhaps you did not notice the following:

haha this mix is pretty much cosigns vahid's "beardo = the new trip-hop" theory.

-- john cougar thornton melloncamp

but continue bustin' imaginary chops if it makes u feel better.

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

I haven't really been blown away by many DJ mixes this year. Tiefschwarz Fabric and Body Language 2 were both quite enjoyable though. There are a lot of my favourite tracks which haven't been put on any CD yet though.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

uh, because it came out in 2005?
-- john cougar thornton melloncamp (wt...), September 12th, 2006. (dubplatestyle) (link)

Occasionally, I am a moron.

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

yes i was pleasantly surprised with the tiefschwarz fabric mix.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

vahid i'd wager that the way the mix is constructed is what differentiates it from mo wax.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

i love the first half of body language 2.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

jess i was talking about myself!!

i want to hear that damn henry schwarz mix!!

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

The best by far for me is Surgeon - Glade Festival 07.14.06 (from his website)

Also rans:
Kode9 ft the Spaceape - Dubstep Allstars 3
Grievous Angel - Dubstep Sufferah
Skream / Stormfield - Ammunition mix

Ken Boone (Hubajube), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

surgeon's been on a more-or-less EBM kick lately right?

i will check that out.

i should also note JOEY BELTRAM - LIVE @ WOMB on tresor

it totally demands an all-caps treatment

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Still need to listen to the Schwarz mix. My favorite Schwarz thing so far remains "Chicago." Best Moodymann rip ever.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

i love the first half of body language 2.

That's what I always say/think. The second half is, how do you say, pants.

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

That Surgeon set is gnarly! Will listen to Shit Robot again too, plenty of sludge, plenty of dance, but not much polyrhythmic/idm farting about, can see why vahid rates it.

04 vs. 05 vs. 06?

been looking back, as I was surprised to feel this year's been much better for mixes than I expected, especially as I've been trying conciously avoid "keeping up" (not very well, clearly).

boredom to the left, babylon to the right (fandango), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

basically what i've learned is that optimo needs to put out a new mix this year so they can take it three years in a row for me.

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Joe Claussell's rising/falling techno-ambient "Translate" CD makes for great listening. But it's not really a party mix.

blunt (blunt), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

the one i've definitely played the most is DJ Solution's garage mix which is available for download here : it's got a bit of 2step here and there, but mostly it's Todd Edwards and Todd-inspired 4x4 UKG. 43 mins, relentlessly funky from start to finish.

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

surgeon mix looks fucking crazy!!

haven't even listened to it yet, not sure what to expect ...

the thing about that jerome sydenham mix is that it drifts into the same sort of trouble territory that francois k has lately ... four minute sections of whooshy noises w/ not much to do but contemplate the meandering tribal "small percussion" instruments

it's like listening to witch doctor music or cuban voodoo drumming or something. interesting in theory, but without the 4/4 kick to tie the whole thing down it's actually incredibly tedious listening.

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

big swathes of the first sydenham mix literally sound like someone matching basic channel loops to a field recording of the worst university hippie drum circle ever

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

that Surgeon mix is a bit "all this music is techno" in the way it grinds down IDM/Dubstep/Electro etc rather brutally to his cause. Which is quite some skill. But I didn't listen to it right through a lot of times tbh. I should redownload/reconsider it (I just kept skipping to the Vex'd > Cristian Vogel section near the end...) although I have a feeling I simply prefer it when off-axis genre records are left alone to sound more like themselves, for the contrast, in a mix situation.

boredom to the left, babylon to the right (fandango), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

didnt' get the Villalobos Awakenings set cuz i've been burned too many times by his sets. anybody have a functioning link? my source, (http://cocoonstyled.web-log.nl/) links to a set that says "FORBIDDEN TO BE SHARED".

That awakenings set is fantastic. Not as dull as some of his can be for home listening...

Still prefer Cassy though. Much perkier.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 14 September 2006 07:15 (nineteen years ago)

The second half of Body Language 2 isn't crap is it? Isn't it just all big hits?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 September 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, track for track the second half is great, although I agree that it the track sequencing doesn't seem to build momentum.

I prefer M.A.N.D.Y.'s No Soap Radio Mix, which is possibly second only to Jeffrey Mac's Meditations In Dub mix in my affections this year.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 September 2006 09:38 (nineteen years ago)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 September 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

The headman mix at Plastic People way back in Feb' was very good - lots of records that link very well, although it does have the ordinary boys slap bang in the middle. It could be down-loaded so it will be hanging about.

I did see this when I was hammered on my birthday so dont trust me 100%

Luke McNally (raw sweaters annoying brother), Thursday, 14 September 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Michael Mayer, Immer 2

oh my fucking god.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

darker and dreamier than Immer the first, but with more luxuriant textrual stuff, a la Triple R's Friends. less poppy than Fabric 13 but just as luminous. maybe his best mix yet.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

basically what i've learned is that optimo needs to put out a new mix this year so they can take it three years in a row for me.

the other half of optimo will have a mix out just before the end of this year.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 14 September 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

The mixing on the Tiga essential mix is really, really great. I'm not totally into all of the tracks he plays but the way he throws it together makes a hell of a difference (and I don't usually care that much about scrappy mixing).

boredom to the left, babylon to the right (fandango), Thursday, 14 September 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

the other half of optimo will have a mix out just before the end of this year.

hooray!!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 14 September 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

i'm digging immer 2, perhaps more than i expected; really stoked to see the crowdpleaser & st plomb track in there, and the koehncke cut works a lot better than i thought it would. (inexplicably, i've sort of gone off koehncke this year, not sure why.) the one thing i do find a bit odd is that mch of the mix doesn't seem THAT mixed, at least on first listen - more like he's highlighting standout tracks, and fading them gently together. not saying that's a bad thing, but i do tend to prefer mixes where i really can't tell where songs begin or end. then again, that's never been exactly mayer's style, i suppose, so i'm not sure why i should be surprised.

Cheers to Good Dog for the Booka Shade Essential Mix. So massive - love the live set esp., which improves on the album simply by focusing only on the big dancey moments (and adding stuff like "Trespass 06" and "Played Runner" to fill the gaps). The "In White Rooms" --> "Darko" --> "Mandarine Girl" --> "Body Language/Cha" run at the end had me thinking of Orbital live sets in its ever-mutating maximal compulsion. Luvvit.

yep henrik schwarz dj kicks

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

I adore Schwarz's "Imagination Limitation" on that mix - his sound works so well with soulful Owens-style mandivas, it's like house at its most far-in/far-out simultaneously.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

re: henrik schwarz

convince me

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Thursday, 21 September 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

seamless, various, ties together disparate elements, african drums!, thin year. convince me not.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

the schwarz is so-so but it starts off very well. the thing that kills it stone dead for me is the actual Robert Owens hideous vocals and lyrics to "walk a mile in my shoes". i don't want to hear that again so i don't think i can listen to the mix.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

i hope DFA do a new holiday mix in december, it might coincide with my actual holidays this time!

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Friday, 22 September 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

i remember you seemed to like the jazzanova remixes and i wasn't so into it.

also: i am suspicious of ANY "best of 2006" dj mix that seems to rely so heavily on the past.

the past vs. retreads of same

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 22 September 2006 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

in a way the mix is a very pure synthesis of crate digging + the technologies available in 2006, the fetishization of curatorial skill and the ear to do something unique with it.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 22 September 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

it is also against the new-new-new myopia so prevalent in these circles (i am so guilty of this as charged) - it is important to be against i think; to have that friction.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 22 September 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

Thing about the Schwarz mix is that most of my favourite moments are his productions!

theyre both great! Faith Recordings really has the indie-friendly dance mix cd market cornered this year.

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Thursday, 9 November 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

That Sven thing we discussed on another thread that Vahid ysi'd for me.

Not the Cassy mix. Don't like the first transition which kind of gave me a bad first impression and don't really feel it kicks in until Sieso.

The Audion fabric, anyone? This seems to have been a bit hated on but it sounded ace when I was tidying my room this afternoon.

Luciano Sci. Fi. Hi. Fi. and maybe the Alex Smoke one judging by the tracklisting.

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Friday, 10 November 2006 02:08 (nineteen years ago)

Slightly weirdly I'm finding a lot to love in the Marc Romboy Systematic Sessions disc. It's basically a bunch of the years big electrohouse tunes but is sequenced nicely and incorporates some deeper moments well. Not really transcendent, but very very playable.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

For me it's Henrik Schwarz, both Faith Recordings discs and the Italians Do It Better mix by Jacques Renault.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 10 November 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

That looks interesting. The inclusion of Liz Torres is tasty, the inclusion of My Mine and Skatt Brothers is a bit too obvious though.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 10 November 2006 07:38 (nineteen years ago)

One that I haven't heard people talk about, and which is excellent, is Tom Bioly and Benjamin Froehlich's Permanent Vacation mix. So dreamy! It's a bit like the first few tracks of Ewan Pearson's Sci-Fi Hi-Fi mix meets Henrik Schwarz meets the Chicken Lips at their best.

It's not listed on discogs.com but this is the quite funny description on the permanent vacation website:

PERMANENT VACATION - Mix-CD (PERMVAC002-2) - 12" EP (PERMVAC001-1)

it feat. tracks and remixes from joakim, whomadewho, double, lindström, alexander robotnick, maurice fulton, ilya santana ao.
the 4 track 12" sampler includes an exclusive cut from ilya santana ( balihu ), double's woman of the world , ost&kjex ( maurice fulton remix ) and tommy seebach's bobble sex.

here is what some of our favorite djs/producer say about permanent vacation:

lindström:.... the comp is great !!!!! i get MANY requests for compilations ... 97% of them pure wack ... yours is amongs those 3% ... hehe
i.cube: Woman of the world great track -ost k jex maurice fulton remix also great. didn t knew the two other trax, brilliant stuff.
todd terje: "Love this mix, let's go swimming!"
ilya santana: itsfantastic!!! the artwork is great and the tracks that u choose are cool, like bobble sex, i never listen before!! i love it.

the cd is compilation of the month in GROOVE magazine (07/08 2006)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 10 November 2006 09:19 (nineteen years ago)

Slightly weirdly I'm finding a lot to love in the Marc Romboy Systematic Sessions disc

yeah me too! sometimes you just need all the big tunes in one place.

kiki's boogybytes still way out in front for me, it really is an incredible thing.

sven vath's sexy techno thing, the mandy no soap radio mix, heidi's monza, immer 2, sascha funke's boogybytes and luciano's scifihifi are all just behind it. STILL not totally feeling the cassy mix even though i keep trying.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 10 November 2006 10:38 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah and mandy at the controls

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 10 November 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

the fabric rub n tug mix is really hitting the spot for me right now. also the first 30 minutes or so of this tim sweeney set:

http://www.dfarecords.com/radiomixes/images/fall2006_1content.jpg

are really fantastic, it drops off a bit in intensity when the tempo goes down tho.

H2-H4 (H2-H4), Friday, 10 November 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

Tobi Neumann's Flieder Lieder deserves a mention.

a (rslvd), Friday, 10 November 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

also damian lazarus's crosstown rebels mix

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 10 November 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

That looks interesting. The inclusion of Liz Torres is tasty, the inclusion of My Mine and Skatt Brothers is a bit too obvious though.

to his credit, Jacques recorded that mix like 2 or 3 years ago, when maybe Skatt Bros and My Mine weren't quite as obvious, though they are timeless classics anyway!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 10 November 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

Can somebody suggest me a current minimal techno mix aimed at peak-hours dancefloor action? All the ones I've been listening to lately, while great, have felt more like after-hours / comedown mixes. Good for listening to around the office etc, but I've got a hankering for a real blood-pumping one. Suggestions?

josh. (disco stu), Saturday, 11 November 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

Tylero, you might also get into Flieder Lieder which is pretty 'pumping'. didn't really feel revelatory to me, but it was nice.

Was Sami Koivikko's "Hot pepper" mix this year? I loved that one.

Jacob (Jacob), Saturday, 11 November 2006 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

Last year, but it's brilliant - esp. the run of tracks 2,3 and 4.

Tylero, Sven Vath's Sexy Techno mix for Coccoon is pretty pumping, I imagine his Sounds for the Seventh Season mix will be too.

Seconded - that mix treads lines between a whole cross-section of various hipster discos that just works on me. That transition from the MSTRKRFT remix of that Gossip song into that Lindstrom track had me OH DAMN SONning like crazy.

Of course this really shouldn't be too surprising considering how their Misch Masch mix towered over 2005.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 January 2007 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

I have been almost completely out of the loop since september 06, but just got four mixes yesterday and I like them all...
... Immer 2, Henrik Schwarz's DJ Kicks, Alex Smoke's SciFiHiFi V3, and the Cassy mix. Ultimately, the latter two are my favorites, for both personal and more theoretical reasons.

As much as I love minimal, and have really loved the German take on techno and house since Chain Reaction, there has been something a bit missing in the music over the last year or so that I wasn't able to put my finger on. My friend and co-conspirator Rob (myspace.com/lovedose) put his finger on it this past summer. What had happened to minimal is that is was getting too inner-directed. Some of the longing, futurism and dys/u-topiansism of the original deep chicago and detroit sounds had been jettisoned for absolute introverted psychedelia. We tried to resolve this by mixing in a lot of early Guidance, early M_nus, and some mid-90s Detroit records as well, but since nobody was at our party, it didn't happen ;-).

What I like about the Smoke and especially the Cassy mixes is how the what-is-now-more-typical sound of minimal circa 05-06 is being re-integrated with some of the more dreamy moments of the past, whether from older records like the Model 500 and early M_nus tracks on SciFi3, or from newer tracks around the Delsin/Styrax orbit on Cassy's mix. I like especially how this is being accomplished without without either mix coming off as a "back to 94-99" statement. I imagine that this has either always been going on in the clubs or has just started, but its nice to hear it on CD.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

never did get into the cassy mix - what IS the appeal of something so bone dry? - but the schwarz dj kicks is amazing.

also, disappointed in the lot of you for not picking up on magda's she's a dancing machine!

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

The Cassy mix isn't "bone dry" AT ALL. Well, one or two spots but mostly it's sexy/deep as fuck. Really. I need to find what I posted the last time this came up...

Schwarz is "accomplished" and I do like it but something stops me getting super passionate about it.

Magda is OK as aural wallpaper, I do put it on a lot(not all in one go though!) but I wish it could have been more of a energetic & dancefloor mix. There are long stretches where it works brilliantly but also huge chunks where it gets over-dessicated for no good reason, It could have been (needed to be) much tighter as a CD mix.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

cassy thread w/small rant

Are people missing the usual '06 mnml-bumping-the-overground bloated synth washes, flatulently soft basslines, go-nowhere pointlessly refined & tiny sounding 'minimal' drum patterns, overlong hypnotic "anthems" (full clip, big yawn), minilouge style dull trance or m-nus 'techno' blandness in calling the Cassy mix "dry"?

'cos the abscence of most of that shit (and replacement by several different, more fundamental, more adventurous, more uplifting tricks) is exactly why it felt utterly palate refreshing to me. It has a fuckload of soul too.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha I reckon a fair amount of the tracks actually sound like m-nus 'techno' blandness!

Cut Copy / Freeform Five mixes - I love this stuff in theory, but agree w/ The Lex that a whole hour of it back to back can get wearisome. Best sampled in small chunks.

Alex Smoke Sci Fi Hi Fi - this ended up being perhaps my third favourite mix of 2006. With the benefit of hindsight, the connections between dubstep and minimal techno are, duh, obvious. But sometimes it's good to point out the obvious.

Henrik Schwarz - hmmm. Not what I was expecting at all. It brings back unwelcome memories of Gilles Peterson radio shows. Like some others, I'm finding it hard to get super excited about it. (I've done a bit of a 180 on the Four Tet DJ Kicks though, so maybe I'll come around to this one too.)

I love the Schwarz DJ mix but I think his productions are more exciting.

" people missing the usual '06 mnml-bumping-the-overground bloated synth washes, flatulently soft basslines, go-nowhere pointlessly refined & tiny sounding 'minimal' drum patterns, overlong hypnotic "anthems" "

This sounds like the Joakim remix of "Camino Del Sol" i.e. awesome.

Did not expect Lex to like Schwarz DJ Kicks

why not? i have a history of liking tasteful stuff!

lex are you listening to it on your iPod or something?

i don't have an ipod! i tried loads of times to get into it last year and apart from the last few tracks when it suddenly actually gets exciting, i just don't hear any of what you hear. there is a vast ten-track stretch after the shackleton opener when literally NOTHING happens.

this is like the wrongest thing ever, at least for tracks 1-7 ...

(after that I'd agree there's a spot of slightly TOO minimal sahko/BC-ism)

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

there are probably 33 track(s) chunks where bloody Magda falls right off the groove, just edited down to 5 minute(feels like 10) edit points...

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

my defending of this is really inarticulate and flaming :(

Not sure if it's 2006 or 2007, but Optimo/JG Wilkes's Walkabout is fucking tremendous.

yeah I don't think anything on the Cassy mix sounds like m_nus. too analogue. I think of m_nus as having a very distinct, airless, computerised sound (although obviously there are exceptions)

Actually this I probably agree with - I love track 3 for example, so spacey.

Mind you I go up and down with the Cassy mix. I may well end up loving it - that's what happened with Tobi Neumann's Pass Your Bedtime mix.

do you have to be in the know to get a download code for that alt. Henrik Schwarz?

Not sure if it was released in December or January, but I'm really, really liking the Marco Carola Fabric 31 mix.

For 2006 I liked the Cut Copy and Freeform Five, but the "mix" I listened to the most was Air's Late Night Tales - way better than their forthcoming album (which is admittedly growing on me).
