Kinda disappointing, but how could it not be? Sucks that he's still into that "Encore"/Elvis in Vegas sound that semi-ruined the Black Album, but this isn't quite as bad as "Bonnie & Clyde" or "Change Clothes". (So yeah, all this really proves is that Jay has gotten shit at picking first singles.) That Flav sample seems really tacked on and the drums are way too busy.

Apocalypse '07: Rodney Strikes Back (R. J. Greene), Saturday, 7 October 2006 06:19 (nineteen years ago)

"and the drums are way too busy."

That's the beauty of it!

MRZBW (MRZBW), Saturday, 7 October 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

I like the beat. It usually takes me a few listens for Jay lyrics to really sink in.

Is that the Rumpshaker saxophone?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Saturday, 7 October 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

it is the rumpshaker sax.

beat is soft soul cheese. crappy drum fills from 'the blazettes'. lazy endless loop of a beat.

sounds like a blueprint/black album outtake or something that didnt make the cut last time.

not really much of a fanfare for the new album.

hope nas' first single is better.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Saturday, 7 October 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

I heard Nas' album is will.i.am'd out like a motherfucker, so uh don't hold your breath.

I mean this new song is no "Hovi Baby" but I love JB's spastic jazz fusion drums.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Saturday, 7 October 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

New single is horrible, man.

Seems really lazy too me, like they cranked it out within a week.

I would've thought his comeback single would be calculated to destroy the world / clubs with its intensity, but instead, it all begins with a whimper.

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Saturday, 7 October 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

And the new Nas is supposed to have 3 Will.i.Am beats at most, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

And I'm not

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Saturday, 7 October 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a big fan of overblown bombastic EW&F bullshit so I'm not complaining, but I won't call anyone a philistine for not warming up to this.

So I kinda feel lonely in feelin this.

he's still into that "Encore"/Elvis in Vegas sound

Agreed. Except I think the whole grasping-at-grandiosity thing makes The Black Album the most exhilirating record he did post-RD. Whether or not he actually crosses the line into majesty is almost beside the point for me. It's the reach that's entertaining.

But whatevs.

will.i.am >>>> just blaze

I know ILM is a contrarian contest, but fuck, man, you're just out of line now.

As of right now, its completely true. Will has been constantly growing as a producer. Just Blaze's sound is tired. (Although I'll stick up for the joints he did on the T.I. album.) If only Will could keep his fucking mouth shut.

The comment about "overblown bombastic EW&F bullshit" is OTM. Can't stand when EW&F does it, can't stand when other people do it.

Apocalypse '07: Rodney Strikes Back (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 8 October 2006 05:49 (nineteen years ago)

I think the biggest problem with Blaze's recent work is that it's all standing in the shadow of "Breathe". Can't for the life of me figure out why Jay didn't want that one.

That being said, I would still take a Just Blaze beat every day of the week and twice on Sundays over a Will beat.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Sunday, 8 October 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

The Just Blaze beat for "The Champ" on Ghostface's new album is sick as hell though, love that beat.

He better have a banger or two for Nas' new album.

Speaking of, I think "Where Y'all At" is just a street "single" to drum up interest. His official single won't be out for another few weeks, I'm assuming. Especially not before Jay's is out, since his album is out a month before Nas' is.

But hey, maybe we'll get lucky and have the Nas track leak sooner

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Sunday, 8 October 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

"overblown bombastic EW&F bullshit" is OTM. Can't stand when EW&F does it, can't stand when other people do it.

I can't even begin to understand where you're comin from.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 8 October 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

It'd be a great plot twist in the whole Jay/Nas saga if after demolishing Nas in battle and then ending the beef and signing him, Nas's first album for Jay smoked Jay's coming-out-of-retirement album

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 9 October 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

"after demolishing Nas in battle" ?!

What the hell are you talking about ?! Nas destroyed Jay !

[02] Hip-Hop is Dead [prod. by will.i.am]
[03] War (Feat. Damian Marley) [prod. by ?]
[04] QB True G (Feat. The Game) [prod. by Dr. Dre]
[05] Play on Playa (Feat. Snoop Dogg) [prod. by Scott Storch]
[06] Blunt Ashes [prod. by Chris Webber]
[07] Let Me in the Light (Feat. Tre Williams) [Prod. by Kanye West]
[08] New York Stomp [prod. by ?]
[09] On the Ave (Feat. Jay-Z) [prod. by L.E.S]
[10] Where Are They Now [prod. by ?)
[11] Still Dreamin' (Feat. Kanye West) [prod. by Kanye West]
[12] Unforgettable (Feat. Chrisette Michelle) [prod. by will.i.am]
[13] Carry The Tradition [prod. by ?]

Just Blaze is producing one of the ?'s, will.i.am may be producing a third as well, Don't know who the other 2 producers will be, possible Premier or Large Professor. Lookin' good though

classic Fader bullshit. "omg I heard a rap song that sounds vaguely like an indie/noize band, let's write some fan fiction about our favorite rappers and over favorite indie rockers skipping through a field together!"

The Making of Show Em What You Got - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7S8Gddw1Zo

5minutes of stupid for 1minute of JustBlaze playing the hell out of some drums.

jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 October 2006 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

Cute.

One day, I started visualizing the record in my head and happened to be out in L.A., there are some kids I work with out there, talented musicians that call themselves 1500 or Nothing, and when I’m out there we live in the studio for like a week. I brought the beat up in the Pro Tools session, kept my drums underneath and had the band jam on it, ‘cause I want it to feel like a performance session. I wanted it to feel like you’re at a show. So that’s what we did. I directed them. I was just like, “This is the vision.” We did it three times and I took the best parts of each take. As the record goes on, I wanted it to escalate little by little. It never gets to a point where it feels that it turns into a performance rather than a record.

So maybe that's where those sick-ass drum fills come from, if not from the Shaft in Africa record?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 October 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

Supposedly somebody busted into Jay Z's hotel room in Africa and stole a copy of "Kingdom Come", then e-mailed copies to several bootleg networks .... or some such

If that is the case (and it sounds kind of weird, but anyway) the record should leak everywhere within the next few days

If it's not true, whatever, it'll be here soon

I wanna hear that Nas track though

Another song has leaked. "Lost Ones". It's the best song so far just in that it feels so ordinary. Any rapper could have made it, which is a nice change of pace from all the "look at me, I'm Jay-Z" bullshit. His rapping is actually kinda interesting as he's not actively feeding his ego. And the beat's pretty simple and not all Just Blaze fireworks and stuff. It's pretty good.

Rodney... (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 26 October 2006 07:45 (nineteen years ago)

I was not feeling the first two songs, but I liked the Lost Ones track a lot when I first heard it. On second listen, it's good but...

Jay lost his flow.

Colin Cassidy (Colin Cassidy), Thursday, 26 October 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Lost ones" is corny as hell.

Apparently it's a Dre beat too.

Dimehitter Dwayne Hosey (dwaynehosey), Thursday, 26 October 2006 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I have yet to hear any top-form Jay on any of these tracks so far.

I hope he takes some risks on this album - I'm getting a little tired of his golden boy schtick.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 26 October 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

the Lost Ones beat fucking sucks. it's like a J5/Ugly Duckling throwaway

jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 26 October 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

"Lost Ones" is about Jay's nephew who died last year (that's who the Colleek referenced in the last chorus is), and with that in mind it sounds kinda heartfelt but yeah overall it's a weak song. I don't know why they're even leaking so many songs this far ahead of time (if the label is in fact doing so deliberately), there's probably only going to be 12-13 songs on it and it'll probably sell better if people haven't heard it all for weeks by the time they can buy it.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 26 October 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't know what the fuck is going on with his flow.

One of the first lines in "Show Me What You Got" is something along the lines of "Already gave the summer some/It's the winter time." Given the seasonal connotations, I was thinking we were going to get an introspective Jay on this record. "Lost Ones" may be evidence of that, but if this is introspective Jay, give me back the hustler!

You could cast this as a transitional album, but using his Comeback as a Transition isn't really gonna reestablish him.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 26 October 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of hate his whole obsession w/ supposedly running the summer every year. Sure, just about every summer he's had some sort of notable single or guest appearance on the radio, but Reasonable Doubt and Blueprint were the only albums he ever released during the actual summer, everything else dropped between late September and December. This is like the 4th time he's released an album in November, and somehow only this time "it's the winter's turn"?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 26 October 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

Seeing the budweiser commercial during the world series had me changing my mind and i like the beat for 'show me what you got' now. It is very Las Vegas.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 26 October 2006 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

fo weelz aka otm.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 26 October 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

I heard Show Me What You Got again and it just strikes me as a mess. I mean it's not that the beat is bad, but there's too much going on and Jay's voice is bumping up against the horn shots and extra drums all the time, and the chorus is a total throwaway. Generally sounds like something I would think was alright if it was just one of those unreleased street tracks.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 27 October 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

I just like the way the rump shaker sax sounds when the levels are turned all the way up.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 27 October 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'm all about the over the top drums and excitable horns. Jay sounds like he's just reveling in it. I wish he turned in better lyrics, but he sounds like he's having hella fun, and that adds an extra dimension.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Friday, 27 October 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

All right Malice just told me that he loves Coldplay too; once Weezy chimes in, we better start a thread to get to the bottom of this

Roque Strew (RoqueStrew), Friday, 27 October 2006 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I've sorta come around to the "Show Me What You Got" beat too, but Jay still sounds lazy on it and the Flav sample just doesn't work.

Rodney... (R. J. Greene), Friday, 27 October 2006 03:39 (nineteen years ago)

I thought teh hiphop Coldplay love was a well known thing.

Rodney... (R. J. Greene), Friday, 27 October 2006 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, in my mind Jay is 0/3 so far with this album.

Thank god that Nas album is on the way though, am I right ?

We'll actually get some good beats AND substance for a change

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Friday, 27 October 2006 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

Nas has "substance".

It's just that his songs with "substance" are boring (any of his political or social songs) or gay (any personal song he made about his dead mom, his cornball pops or being in love with Kelis).

He's only ever good when he's making songs like "made u look", "get down", "no ideas original", "thief's theme" and AZ's "serious", which he could probably do in his sleep, over classic Ultimate Breaks samples. Nobody really gives a shit about his other stuff.

I wish he'd leak the Salaam Remi produced songs already so everyone can get this album outta the way.

Dimehitter Dwayne Hosey (dwaynehosey), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:24 (nineteen years ago)

After a couple weeks I'm not too big on "Show Me" for most of the same reasons everyone else are and I find it hilarious that Diddy made damn near the same beat, sans Afro Lafayette horns/hyperactive drums for "We Gon' Make It" -- in other words, subtler

nate p. (natepatrin), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

K. Def did that beat for Puffy and Jay got Just Blaze to bite that shit wholesale after he heard it at the studio session, so the story goes.

And i can well believe it after the "stsy real"/"p.s.a" fiasco.

Dimehitter Dwayne Hosey (dwaynehosey), Friday, 27 October 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

I really dig that Nas line "...no AKs/I'm the ambassador/Robin Hood in the Aston Mar" and I don't know why. It just sounds good, and I keep hearing it in my head.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 27 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

But Nas' fascination with analingus kind of freaks me out.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 2 November 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

I just heard a bit of it on the way home today - it was definitely better than the songs that are out so far from the new album.

A few choice excerpts:

operation take over corporate
make over offices

please may these words be recorded
to serve as testimony that i saw it all before it
came to fruition sort of a premonition
uncontrollable hustler's ambition
alias superstition, like stevie

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 2 November 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

Only Jay-Z can manage to whine about success and make me want to listen.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 2 November 2006 02:13 (nineteen years ago)

ehh, that Funk Flex freestyle is kind of a mess, half the time he's just mumbling incoherently and taking his 'rain man' schtick to ridiculous extremes. and it's rare that his radio freestyles aren't recycled from unreleased songs, so I'm sure most of those lyrics will end up on Kingdom Come and some of them have already shown up on a leaked freestyle from his upcoming mixtape w/ Green Lantern. there's a pretty funny example of what Ethan was just talking about ("telegraphing every gay punchline") where Jay stops and explains a Dr. J/76's reference. I think that Jay being really good at writing to the beat means that his freestyles usually suck because he's trying to force the rhyme to fit a beat he didn't write it to.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 2 November 2006 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

You've got a point: there's definitely some mess in here, but once he gets on it he gets the fuck on it. The second half fucking killed me.

It's rare that his radio freestyles aren't recycled from unreleased songs, so I'm sure most of those lyrics will end up on Kingdom Come and some of them have already shown up on a leaked freestyle from his upcoming mixtape w/ Green Lantern

Yeah, I kind of figured as much - I always figured his reluctance to truly freestyle was part of some kind of control-freak thing where he needs to "maintain his brand image" or something like that.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno. i was all excited for this freestyle...but it sound so wierd and stilted..the flow is all messed up...the lyric READ awesome, but i don't like how he delivers them.

and what (ooo), Thursday, 2 November 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Like Matt H said and Hoosteen said way above about "Lost Ones" something totally seems up with his flow. It seems way off beat in spots on both this freestyle and "Lost Ones" and even a bit on "Show Me What You Got." He seems to just be going at his own pace regardless of the beat.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 3 November 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

Weak.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 3 November 2006 05:30 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree A-ron.

The flow was rock solid and his lyrics were entertaining as fuck, which is more than I can say for Hov. Mortal Kombat references came out of left field. I loved it.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Friday, 3 November 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

blah blah blah blah BLAH like BLAH BLAH
blah blah blah blah BLAH like BLAH BLAH
blah blah blah blah BLAH like BLAH BLAH

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 3 November 2006 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I said "rock solid." It's not full of stretches or bends, no real rhythmic thrills, but I'll take A flow over Hov's search-for-a-flow on the original.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Friday, 3 November 2006 05:42 (nineteen years ago)

something totally seems up with his flow. It seems way off beat in spots on both this freestyle and "Lost Ones" and even a bit on "Show Me What You Got." He seems to just be going at his own pace regardless of the beat.

It's always been part of Jay-Z's schtick to play-faint against the beat. I didn't notice him doing it on the freestyle any more than usual, but I haven't heard Lost Ones. Flow =/= being a metronome. On Show Me What You Got though I agree he never really hits his stride.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 3 November 2006 05:43 (nineteen years ago)

xpost I have a personal thing about the overuse of unconnected similes in hip-hop though.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 3 November 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

that lil wayne show me what you got is pretty crazy....the mortal kombat stuff is awesome, but the real wild one for me was the fucking seahawks great STEVE LARGENT reference! haha awesome.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

play-faint against the beat

That's the perfect phrase for what I was trying to say re: the "stretches or bends, real rhythmic thrills" that Hov usually provides.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

yeah except now it sounds just awkward and muddled, at least on that freestyle and show me whatcha got.

M@tt He1geson: Real Name, No Gimmicks (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Totally.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

I've probably said it in so many words somewhere here before, but I kind of hate the whiny tone that's always been in Jay's speaking voice but has only started to creep into his rapping in the past 5 years. I love the whole era from Vol. 1 to The Dynasty because that's when he sounded his coldest and most precise and authoritative. Compare any of his doubletime flows from back then to that bullshit Mariah remix from last year, for instance. He still raps the old stuff more or less the same live, though, so I'm thinking the difference in his voice is probably by choice and not some irreverseable change.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

I've been trying to figure out for years now if Byron's a for-real dickwad or if he's just exposing ignorance ala Borat et al.

Either way, my problem with Byron is neatly encapsulated in this exchange in the comments of that Weezy pic:

Who the fuck cares? Weezy is making hot music, so who cares who he kisses a dude on the mouth or if he's gay?

Chances are, if this wasn't photoshopped (which it doesn't seem to be), then it was just some "that's my pa" shit.

Does it even matter, though? You guys need to grow up.

The Coldplay song is a nightmare. The drums are bad and the levels seem off. Coldplay sounds like he phoned it in on a bad connection. Maybe rappers will stop talking about him when they hear how bad this sounds. Throughout, there's a lot of mawkish introspection, dull club numbers and The Neptunes track is too busy. The anti-Bush number is maybe the 5th best rap song about New Orleans. Maybe.

I don't know. Maybe I'll like it more on the next pass.

Yeah, that Nas / Jay track sounds like it'll be amazing, if only those fuckers would shut up for 2 seconds.

Jay's album is alright, some good beats and such, but the Nas is the one I'm really anticipating, especially since "Black Rewpublican", "Hip Hop is Dead", "Where Y'all At" and, to a lesser extent, "The N" all sound good.

5 weeks to go !

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Sunday, 12 November 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

I'm flabbergasted that the subpar leaked tracks, whatever their positives, are actually the BEST thing I've heard on the album so far (only halfway through).

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

this isnt horrible at all. i dont know what you guys are listening to or what you expected. its jay-z doing what hes been doing for years, pretty much coasting lyrically but picking some good beats and making some good songs in the process. its not amazing, he sounds lazy, self absorbed as usual, repeating his own cliches, and lapsing into that lazy, jeezy/wayne/ish flow he was falling prone to on the blueprint vol 2 or thereabouts, but this is all par for the course when it comes to jay-z. this is not the worst record this year. nothing amazing though. diddy has better beats.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah you are really selling it as not-horrible there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

the track that samples superfreak is no where as bad as some people made out. so what if it samples the same song as u cant touch this - most people wouldnt even be able to tell it was the same sample, from the way just blaze chopped it up (quite excellently i might add).

ive not finished it yet, but this is a good album in a year that hasnt been mindblowing. even though hes not on his a-game, hes still pretty good. wtf is that sample on the john legend song though? it sounds like some horrible paul simon type of song from the 80s.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

dr dres beats on this are pretty poor - they sound low budget and cheap (but then so do a million other beats these days) and weirdly, two of them sound like j dilla!

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

pretty much coasting lyrically but picking some good beats and making some good songs in the process

His lyrics and delivery lack the conviction of the Black Album and obviously sonically this doesn't stand up to Blueprint. I didn't expect Jay to do another record that changed the sound of the genre for half a decade, but I did expect him to deliver on the hints of new lyrical direction we got on the leaked tracks. I did expect more singular production from the all-star team. I hoped, even, for a line that followed through on the Elvis-in-Vegas suggestions of the Black Album.

We got none of those things. I'm disappointed. It's not horrible by any means, it's just relentlessly fucking mediocre and as an unabashed Jay stan that would have been happy with any of a number of directions for dude to take, this disappoints me.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

every defense i've read of this album:

"well, yeah, i mean it's not real good, but hey, i dunno, i guess it's kinda okay, and hey what do you expect?"

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

Based on how low my expectations are I bet I'll really like it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

i think jay z has generally been slipping lyrically more or less since he started to listen to the 'you ruined hip hop' contingent and decided he needed to get back to more traditional beats. his 'swagger' (ahem) hasnt really been found again since, apart from the occasional song here and there. blueprint 2, despite being too long, actually was the last real hurrah for him as a rapper. black album was tepid and boring, blueprint had some great tracks but also felt like a concessionary move. plus, that whole syrupy vegas soul sound he has is bland.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 13 November 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see how Blueprint felt like a concessionary move, at the time it felt like solidification of what he'd started on dynasty and was pretty brave in a swizz/mannie era (of course at THIS point that doesn't mean very much post-kanye).

I also would defend the black album, although i know its not that popular around here (aside from amongst people who got into him around that time). I think the 'vegas soul' (which is funny you decribe as such because as far as I can tell 'vegas soul' is two different things, post-retirement flash and grandiosity + soulful nostalgia, that he alone brought together) was an effective shot for a last album. And it had its lyrical moments too (last track, for example).

Still haven't heard this but if even hoosteen is bailing on it i don't have much hope.

Here's a link to the Nas / Jay track off Nas' new album -

www.zshare.net/audio/nas-jay-z-black-republican-escotheory-mp3.html

It still has a DJ talking over it like the earlier version that came out, but they mostly stick to the beginning, so you can still hear the verses.

SICK track

Erock Lazron (Erock Zombie), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

That Jay Z/ Nas track is sick. Better than anything on Kingdom Come.

Is Jay talking about Dame Dash in his verse? Kinda sounds like it.

Sam Chennault (s.c.), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

I finally heard one of the new songs on 92Q last night but the DJs didn't say what it was called - the chorus was "30s are the new 20s" or something like that. And you know, it was pretty okay, it was enough to make me wanna hear more...but (despite even this thread) I was expecting something more...mythical, you know?

beats will be remembered as late era dre, neptunes and kanye before they all vaporised into oblivion.

I wish that was true, but I think they'll all be charging six figures for a beat until they're 80. it's definitely symptomatic of one of Jay's problems the last few years, though. aside from a handful of no-names, every producer he's worked with on this and the Black Album have been established people he's worked with forever, when he used to discover producers or get with whoever's new and hot at the moment. not that I necessarily want to hear Jay do songs with Cool & Dre or whatever, but it seems like he's unwilling to go out of his comfort zone and will just take whatever Pharrell or Just Blaze comes up with.
