What a surprise from Nick Cave.Who thought he could return to his angry past again after all those years and musical changes?
great track this "no pussy blues" is, sort of a no wave meets The Stooges guitar solo.
looking forward for the album.

emekars (emekars), Thursday, 9 November 2006 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I know next to nothing about Cave except his excellent taste in women and facial hair, but "No Pussy Blues" is badass.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 9 November 2006 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

This won't download for me, but I am SO up for it. The Birthday Party records meant so much to me, I missed seeing 'em live by about six months, and Nick's solo stuff just isn't in the same zone. Be amazing to see him slip back into full-on BP mode. Are they going to tour?

Soukesian (Soukesian), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

GODDAMN THAT SONG RUUUUUUUULZ!

I'm super pumped up right now!

fuck I want to throw a brick at someone!

fuck me, this is great! it's like when reviewers say shit like "flamethrower guitars" and shit yr all like tevs dood, but the guitar on this is so brutal, awesome!

This is indeed pretty great. I never thought I'd be looking forward to a Nick Cave album again...

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

i think abbatoir blues/lyre of orpheus might be my fav nick ever.

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 9 November 2006 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Is that a guitar, or is that Ellis's mic'd and distorted violin?

zach mercer (suizen), Thursday, 9 November 2006 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, who knows, i never thought of that....

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 9 November 2006 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Cause that first big salvo of distortion is nice, but it doesn't really sound like a traditional guitar, but much more like the kind of noisy solos you hear someone with an amplified viola or violin playing. Plus, if you keep listening, you can hear a more traditional guitar riff kick in later on.

It's rather low quality, but I'm not hearing any other overdubs at all--a four guys, four instruments kind of deal...so where's Ellis?

zach mercer (suizen), Thursday, 9 November 2006 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

thank christ nick cave has a sense of humor again. this song's great i really can't wait to hear more.

i think he's a bit old for "full-on BP mode," as much as it pains me to say, but this is good enough for now.

adam j (In Place of Something Clever), Friday, 10 November 2006 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

It's great! But it's not like the Birthday Party at all. Are you all saying that just because he's growling a bit?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 10 November 2006 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, if anything, I'm thinking more of the Tupelo era.

nick cave vocals - tupelo area+scott walker style
the guitars - stooges
the drums - mellow birthday party (dead joe)
the bass - gallon drunk

well, you obviously missed that point.

zach mercer (suizen), Saturday, 11 November 2006 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

occasional mongrel (kit brash), Saturday, 11 November 2006 05:44 (eighteen years ago)

Oh my god! Has he gone all passionate and rock and roll again with seething eyes??? I'm so up for this shit.

A Chocolate Ball of Sweet Confectionary Fire (Bimble...), Saturday, 11 November 2006 08:04 (eighteen years ago)

First the solo show, now this - is this the longest time he's been Mick Harvey-less?

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 11 November 2006 09:16 (eighteen years ago)

"We're planning to do an album in the new year. In fact, that reminds me, I must ring Nick to find out what's going on as he won't talk to anybody about it. I met Jim Sclavunos in New York recently, he'd been in the studio with Nick for about three weeks, working on this Grinderman record, so I asked him about plans for the new Bad Seeds record and he said Nick wouldn't talk about it. So, I'll give him a call to find out what's going on. The last Bad Seeds record was class."

This week Harvey's getting around to touring his solo album from a year or two ago, with Thomas Wydler and James Johnston in his band.

occasional mongrel (kit brash), Sunday, 12 November 2006 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting... Thanks!

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 12 November 2006 06:45 (eighteen years ago)

OM--what on earth are you talking about? That's what I suggested in the first place, when everyone else was talking about guitar solos. Do you have a bouzouki on that track? No? Then what are you on about?

I would really like so much to hear this, but when I go to the myspace page, it keeps breaking up while it's playing, "buffering" etc. March is a long way away. We really have to wait that long for the album?

Pump up the pumpkin, pump up the pumpkin dance dance (Bimble...), Sunday, 12 November 2006 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

...so where's Ellis?

occasional mongrel (kit brash), Monday, 13 November 2006 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

It's floating around, as of a few hours ago. It's not quite as intense as an album as "No Pussy Blues," but it certainly is louder and more agressive generally than Cave and co. have been the last few years. There's some nice ballads on here, actually. Based on my one listen so far I like it a lot.

Jouster (Jouster), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a Grinderman in the pale moon, in the silver moonlight... yes, I'm the Grinderman 7 days a week in the pale moonlight, in the silver rain... yes, I'm the Grinderman anyway I can...

This is so much better than his last 3 or 4 albums. Who'd have thought it?

David V (grammy), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

suprised no one has mentioned the Ramones yet

toe-foo (toe-foo), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 11:42 (eighteen years ago)

I love track 11.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Er... so, what is a fendocastor then? Google it and you only get a couple of results, all about Warren Ellis in Grinderman and (fendocaster) "guy goes to a guitar shop, asks for a GibPaul FendoCaster. Man behind the counter: 'let me guess: you're a drummer' " type jokes.

It doesn't exist, is that it?

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

comparing the rest of the album to the goodies of "no pussy blues" is dissapointing
it's much quieter, and less pointy and accurate than that song.

emekars (emekars), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

What was the point then of getting rid of the Bad Seeds?

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

he didnt get rid of them.
it's a "side project" of sorts.

emekars (emekars), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I know I know. I meant "temporarily dispense with"

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

well, it is kinda different in style and sound (though some of the songs themselvs are cave's regular stuff), and sometimes it has more "anger" on it.i'm not in nick cave's head, but the bad seeds were repeating themselvs more or less, and this one is a bit of a fresh air, than the usuall mick harvey production in the late 15 years or more.

emekars (emekars), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, as much as I liked the last Bad Seeds lp, I felt it came much too late. I had already OD'ed of that sound. Looking forward to this, but I guess I'll be a fanboy and wait for the official release.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 2 March 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

Damnit, this is out already? And I didn't look for it at the damn CD store today? ARRRRGH

Bimble, Saturday, 3 March 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)

It's not out yet. You are safe until April 10!

What a long leak!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 3 March 2007 06:43 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, that makes me feel better. But you know what? They're all long leaks nowadays. It's despicable. I go into a shop looking for something I've already heard and know I want to buy and it's...not even there. Ridiculous.

Bimble, Saturday, 3 March 2007 06:45 (eighteen years ago)

This album is weak. "Grinderman"'s the best thing on it. Otherwise, it just seems same ol' same ol'.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Saturday, 3 March 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'm thinking Tin Machine, I'm thinking garage band with a budget.

moley, Saturday, 3 March 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

Tin Machine? That's harsh.

Soukesian, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

And, I hope, uncalled for.

Soukesian, Saturday, 3 March 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Err, this is out, at least in continental Europe. I saw it in a big retail chain.

baaderonixx, Monday, 5 March 2007 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

It's out in Australia too.

SeekAltRoute, Monday, 5 March 2007 09:23 (eighteen years ago)

The song holds, like, totally unexpected promise until the first minute and 1/2. The guitar/noise thingy in the chorus is nice. The lyric's rubbish. Such gathering of facial hair per such short square metres is truly, utterly hideous. Promises to be even worse than Tin Machine. Looked afterwards for some Birthday Party stuff on YouTube. Much, much better hairstyles all around. Much, much better music too. Thanks for reminding me why I virtually stopped caring after Tender Prey.

JML, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, thank you (on the way back from the obligatory lunchtime headphone check in ye local Megastore); Tin Machine was exactly the comparison point I was looking for. At least the Stooges make no pretence about what they're doing in 2007 and why they're doing it.

Another £11.99 saved, then *ticks off spreadsheet*...

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 5 March 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

buncha killjoys, you lot. i'm buying this RIGHT NOW. i love it. reductive nick cave is what i want to hear.

(i should maybe point out that i also liked tin machine, but that is neither here nor there.)

on a good day - no, really, stop laughing - i have a vague, passing, slight facial resemblance to nick cave. seeing him now, i really am considering growing that moustache back and to hell with the consquences (ie instant dumping by mrs f).

grimly fiendish, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I loved the single and I can't really see how the rest of the album would slide into ageing dad-rock, so maybe some people could say a few more words on how it sounds? Alternatively, of course, I could simply rush to my favorite p2p and shut up.

baaderonixx, Monday, 5 March 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

okay, bought, listened ... nothing else on there is remotely as good as "no pussy blues". it's good, and it's fun, and it rocks, but it is ultimately kinda dispensable. next time i listen i'm going to do so at two or three times the volume.

but TBH what the fuck should one expect from a side project? entertaining grindy bluesy rock does it just fine for me.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 5 March 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Grinderman would have been much better if it had been the new Chico side project.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

i can't argue with that.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

There are a few songs on this that I find really, oddly compelling. Sure the album starts with the promise of vitriol and doesn't deliver, but it depends on what style you're looking for or what you'll tolerate. A real mixed bag, even in lyrical quality. But it still seems to me I'm happier with some things on this album than I have been with his work since Boatman's Call which has proven to be the masterpiece he's likely never to match.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 April 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

Ellis told The Quietus:

"It’s kind of like stoner rock meets Sly Stone via Amon Duul. It’s very diverse, and there’s a lot of stuff on there that doesn’t sound like anything we’ve done before. Nick’s got a different thing going on with the lyrics than he would have from the Bad Seeds, and he’s found a new thing from the first album. Less sex? I wouldn’t say that. It’s psychedelic, and I think it’s great. We’re really excited about it."

I dig the new album but it sags a bit in the middle.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 20 September 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

on 2nd thought, he does, but this is so much better:

yea my take on the grinderman stuff from the last album was like 'oh good he's back to something he's better at, well kinda'. but it's like he can't shake that literary monkey off his back? and yeah i really prefer the raucous jokester side of nick and i'm glad he's mining that or something like it again but maaaan do i miss rowland.

which = basically i am unrealistically wanting this to be the birthday party and setting myself up for disappointment.

I can't quite fathom anyone liking Grinderman better than the Birthday Party.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 20 September 2010 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

This is shit music made by shit people for shit people.

If you like this, blog about Nick Cave's fucking facial hair then cut yourself with a piece of fucking glass and throw yourself off a fucking bridge.

Hipstamatic Priest (King Boy Pato), Monday, 20 September 2010 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

Insightful criticism!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 20 September 2010 12:10 (fifteen years ago)

If you're wondering what music King Boy Pato does enjoy, he can recently be found on the Interpol new s/t album thread ("Might get around to listening to this"): Interpol - Interpol

I love that he's also toting an extremely dorky looking canvas shopping bag, like he's returning from Trader Joe's.

I've been surprised/amused to see some fairly huffy reviews in The Wire and NME about Grinderman's "boring misogyny." Does one really need to be familiar with his body of work going back to The Birthday Party to appreciate the humor in Grinderman?

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 23 September 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

mate, worm tamer is actually awesome. His voice managed to not piss me of like it does with post BP stuff.

owenf, Friday, 24 September 2010 12:55 (fifteen years ago)

an extremely dorky looking canvas shopping bag

That is a Current 93 shopping bag, the picture is from their most recent mailout.

The live experience got a thumbs up from me, even if it was a frantic pain to shoot.

he's awful close to that masturbating caveman

Nick really doesn't like the look of Ellis' instrument either.

I AM SO FUCKING PUMPED UP FOR THIS SHOW

da poupier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 20:52 (fifteen years ago)

i still haven't heard either of these records! how did that happen, i'd probably like them. tho i always feel like the odd man out in that i like cave's brooding piano ballad thang, too.

tylerw, Wednesday, 13 October 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

nah man i love that stuff too, nick is awesome but yeah grinderman smokes

da poupier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 13 October 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

going to see the show tonight super duper excited

there was usic in the cafes at night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

basically, fuck every other rock band you could see live right now, if grinderman comes to your city you need to go.

some horny old men making crazy noise...nick was inspirational, never seen him before....so funny and rock godlike.

there was usic in the cafes at night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 15:57 (fourteen years ago)

warren ellis was doing really bad things to his guitar...he totally looks like a manical manson version of late period gone-to-seed richard manuel (like last waltz era)...the bassist looks like the dude from sexy beast when he plays nicholson's capo in the departed

there was usic in the cafes at night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

fuuuuuuck, i thought about going

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Wednesday, 24 November 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, cave is one of those guys who just owns the stage. saw him w/ the bad seeds a couple years back and he killed. would definitely go see grinderman if they were playing near me.

tylerw, Wednesday, 24 November 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Grinderman 2 might be my favorite album of the year. Loud, obnoxious, funny, scary, catchy, noisy.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 13 December 2010 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

It's the sound of frustrated middle-aged men giving it their all one last time. That's fresher than the umpteenth love song from where I stand...

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 01:49 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, it might be my favorite of the year, too (along with gil scott heron; good year for middle-aged angst, i guess).

there's such a ferocious, menacing sexual vibe over the whole album. it's like steely dan got turned down by every girl they hit on in the gaucho era, and turned aggressive/borderline violent.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 14 December 2010 01:53 (fourteen years ago)

gotta see if someone nominated worm tamer for track of the year. i forgot to, but it's in my top five for 2010.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 14 December 2010 02:00 (fourteen years ago)

can anyone tell me if the RMX EP is worth getting?
