i was happy to see that he did an RA podcast although i haven't listened yet as the end of this year has seen so many mixes that are worth spending time with. i haven't even caught up with the ILM mix thread yet.

i love the extended "stop look and listen" too. (i think that's henrik's mix)

And the fact that he rocks vocals on his DJ Kicks track is a major bonus. I only hope we can somehow connect wity him in the coming year and get something done together in some manner.

Yeah a hook-up is definitely a good idea.

I mean, you have to understand, when you subscribe to evey email weekly newsletter (Juno, Phonica, Picadilly, Beatport, Bleep, Clone, Forced Exp, etc etc etc) which I am sure many here do, and I see all the dozens and dozens of new 12" singles coming out every week, you dont want to listen, you want to crawl under the covers and never come out! When something great rears its head, we do fucking carthwheels, we want to send champagne, we want to just KNOW them in some way. It is inspiring.

That said, I am in London right now and just went to the DC Recordings night w/ Padded Cell Live and J Saul Kane dj'ing and there were maybe 20 people there. That really bummed me out. London man, WTF?

Also, his track for Diamonds and Pearls (Jimis 2006, no?) is monsterfully big. Love it so much.

maybe I am a dork, tho I just use Phonica and Decks.De, but I always want to listen, and actually really enjoy listening, don't underestimate the bite sized kick of a 90 second snippet of something good!

This track is great! Reminds me a bit of Luomo's "Body Speaking".

The RA podcast is ace, esp. the first half. I'm not quite so into Schwarz when he's in Moodymann mode (dusty sounding funk and disco loops), if only b/c it's not quite as distinctive. On the other hand, the use of Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" on this is inspired.

it reminds me of the old reynoldsism about how house just *never changes*, it's just stodgy and reliable year after year whereas whatever he's always hyperenthusing about is so mercurial and always rushing into the future or whatever. well, the secret about house is that it aside from stodginess it's incrementally ALWAYS getting better, by tiny steps.

I tried to argue this line, or something quite similar, in that thread where Jess broke up with house (circa beginning 2003), but no-one agreed with me.

I do like the more Moodymann-ish Schwarz stuff as well, it's just not as startling to me (post Moody/Parrish etc.) as his more orchestral sound - e.g. "Imagination Limitation", the Alton Miller mix etc.

Basically I like him most when he sounds like he's lost in a Bermuda Triangle constellated by Moodymann, Isolee and Faze Action.

I've been contemplating making a CD for a friend with stuff like Schwarz, "Rej" etc. alongside Fuckpony, Nass etc, called "The New Deepness"

also, i cannot get enough of the coldcut mix. i knew this already, i am surprised that others don't feel this way. it works spectacularly well tacked on to the end of the mandy at the controls mix.

The Wei Chi one is still the best I feel.

The remix isn't bad...it's those lyrics.

I must check the Tosca again, I remember being kind of meh about it tho as the shop I worked in closed down that Tosca remix album was one of the few CDs left...hard to feel enthusiasm for it.

sometimes cheesy inspirational lyrics are precisely what is needed to hit the spot. and it's better than 'this world'!

Yes, the "Sun In The Sky" remix is probably the key discovery of Henrik Schwarz Live for me. I love it whenever he programs dirty electronic basslines amidst all the classy piano.

The whole album is a stunner BTW.

i first heard him on the gilles peterson show (gasp! horror!) a couple of years ago and wrote him off as a moodymann wannabe. you just can't use dusty, slowed down soul/funk loops in a house context without harking back to Kenny Dixon Jr... that sound is just too distinctive at this point. (in the same way, I think Burial pretty much owns his own sound, and "submerge woodblocks" and that distinctive pitched down diva vocals sound will be off limits for a long while...)

but over the last year Henrik's remixes have just crept up and really grabbed me. i really rate what did with Mari Boine, Alton Miller, and (obvs) Coldcut. What I really like about him is how his remixes (that I've heard...) are really old school in their approach: He takes the bits of the tune that he likes, mixes them with the vocals in a pretty straightforward way, and adds in his own flavours.

check his remix of a tune called "Bloodstream" by Stateless, which came out last month on K7. I thought this bunch were the same Stateless that recorded for Jimster's Freerange label, but they're not. Their album bored me completely (indietronica bollocks) and I wouldn't buy it, but Henrik's take works so well, by pulling out some lovely melodic bits from the tune and highlighting a nice vocal that I otherwise didn't notice... He's done the same with a tune from Mark Murphy's very underwhelming new album...

I'll be checking for his DK mix and live album for sure.

New 12" on Innervisions. I for one loved the Amampondo track on his DJ-Kicks - this new 12" is a collaboration!! Beautiful, meandering/developing, long track. With a terrific Dixon remix on the flip. Streamed.

Dear Henrik Schwarz, please stop killing the bass about a zillion times on every mix or live set you do, it gets really annoying.

Listening to last year's Live album again: at about the point where "Leave My Head Alone, Brain" finally completely disintegrates into stray cosmic motes of pulsing energy, I wonder "Is this guy the greatest musician that has ever lived??"

Did you hear the Live album he released last year Kevin? It's the equal of the one i talked about at the top here. Possibly slightly superior, I'm not sure. Also you really should check out Culoe De Song's Resident Advisor podcast for another superlative mix in this style.

Bimble what are you even talking about here? Henrik Schwarz? Which tracks? Even if I bought this general line about house (which I don't) he'd seem like a curious person to make this complaint of. In anything Schwarz is the kind of producer who would be more likely enjoyed by listeners who think house "all sounds the same".

Seeing Ame and Dixon DJing back to back in Berlin was one of the finest clubbing experiences of my life. EXCEPT that they committed the CRIME of mixing out of the remix of "Clouds Are Gone" before the piano section.

Yes this is totally the mix!! Thank you billions, just sayin!!! And thank you, Tim F! The live remix of "Clouds Are Gone" is indeed jaw-dropping. It's like visiting some psychedelic hootenanny or string quartet concert on The Holodeck with the entire thing shutting down at the end due to power failure. Absolutely gorgeous but very disquieting.

Almost as great is the track before it, "Your Love" - 9 minutes of ungraspable dub seizures anchored occasionally by a string moan and featuring an extremely creepy choir (?) coming in at 37:40. Future jazz, eh?

And yes, that would be a crime to mix it out before the piano section. It is rollicking, as you say, but it's also very cold and mechanical, constantly threatening to short out. Which of course it does do at the very end. The piano so the track's cold heart. Astonishing.

can't stand the wobbly warping on the bill withers vocal. otherwise it's a great track. loads of dodgy warping all over his dj kicks as well. is it on purpose? it's such a horrible side effect of warping audio and there are pretty simple ways round it.

god, i just discovered the Mari Boine remix for myself. though i have been listening to the man a lot as of recent (the Yalla Yalla remix rates high for me), the Mari Boine remix fucking KILLS ME. shivers up and down the spine.

the warping is a bit of an ableton live thing. it's not ideal but i can deal with it.

Aside from maybe Imagination Limitation, that remix I think is the best application of the Henrik Schwartz aesthetic, essentially all the right ingredients mixed well, and cooked al dente. Whereas I find a good portion of HS's stuff kind of middling, this shows the extent of the subtle grandeur that is HS at his best.

I rate a lot of his stuff high...i think 'Walk Music' is fucking brilliant, and love the Amampondo shit too.

feel like Moodymann dropped the Bill Withers edit a couple months back-- was wondering who did it then, now i'm glad i know.

Mari Boine is definitely his high point by some measure for me, although "Walk Music" and "Chicago" are up there. I dunno, I was crazy about him for a while but as Edward said above sometimes he falls into middling territory. As seen above I really thought he was on to something pretty special for a while (around the DJ Kicks release) but have cooled on him since.

agree that the mari boine rmx and 'walk music' are schwarz pinnacles - would add the alton miller, ane brun and coldcut rmxes too.

mari boine mix is amazing. i also like the v old "faces and places" one which I prob said here 2/3 years ago!

my favorite is "walk music" though i find little to argue with in the last few posts. i like how it's unsettling and uplifting at the same time sorta like a bad weather day where you're really happy anyway.

Also agree with the Ableton warping thingy. It seems at odds with his otherwise more organic production values.

mix of Omar featuring Stevie Wonder's "I'm Feeling You" is, in my opinion, fucking stunning.

yeah probably 2½ hours? an hour longer than he was meant to play for! obviously having a great time - he was in the other room downstairs later, jiggling onstage, looking like he was itching to take over from Chateau Flight blokey on the decks, but he was also already running an hour and a half past his finish time and showing no signs of fading
