Justin Broadrick is amazing, and so is the leaked promo for this record.

Any thoughts on the newest hymnal to be released from this monolithic post-hardcore figure? Personally, I can't wait to grab this on vinyl.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

haven't listened to it yet, but I'm curious

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

(pfunkboy to thread!)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

I wouldn't call it miles away. It sounds like a rehash of Selfless to me.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

dissenters, bring it. i love it. personally, i think it sounds absolutely nothing like Selfless, but ... it's fun to see what others think. keep it coming.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure it's great. I am patient.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

we could all learn from ned's zen.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

i think i like it better than silver. i dont think ive ever heard any Godflesh. is Selfless a good place to start?

Also, I like the album art:

mahalo 4 ur kokua (grady), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

i dont think ive ever heard any Godflesh.

Infidel.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

Selfless was where I started. Bought it when it came out. Streetcleaner is most peoples favourite.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

not godflesh; godlike.

i know it's only january 9, but i'm going to say GRIMLY ALBUM OF THE YEAR and i'm pretty sure i'll be right. "horizontal & weightless" being just ... ho, i don't really have the words.

i too will be buying it on vinyl the second it's out.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

You will be lucky. You better be ready to keep refreshing the Conspiracy website. The last one sold out in 20 mins.
Now there's even MORE demand.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:53 (nineteen years ago)

shit.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

words that came through my mind by 1st listen:"accessible" "shoegaze" "codeine/slint/mogwai" "sadcore"
"monotonic".
i might like it.

emekars (emekars), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

I like Pure slightly more than Streetcleaner and way >>>>>>>>> than anything with the name Godflesh that came after (there are Ice and Techno Animal project though that I like more than Pure.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

Streetcleaner was the first for me but Pure is very much in its own world, not least because Robert Hampson's all over it. A great memory: playing "Pure II" on an outdoor KUCI DJ setup back in 1994 during a late summer sunset. Loud as hell and amazing beyond words.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

Now I definitely have to hear this.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

i think i like it better than silver

&&&*&&)&&#&&&&@&!&&&& does not compute because nothing is better than Silver.

Can't wait to hear this.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

although it's not something one's havent heard before, and although it's repeating the formula all over, i like this record.
heavy guitars and sound, beautiful melodies, metal meets post rock=
great indie record.
plus,i personally admire everything influenced by "Codeine".

and it's definetly not the sound of (the great)"Godflesh".

emekars (emekars), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

Waiting for the promo gods to shine on me and have this show up in my mailbox soon...

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

Your music is somewhat of an acquired taste and obviously some are going to feel it's a little to slow or drawn out, while others would relate the quality of the music with smoking pot and listening to it while getting high. Which of the two, if either would you consider a bigger insult?

Neither, I recognize that there will be more people out there that cannot stand my music than there are people that would like it, that's obvious to me. I know it's too slow, boring and drawn out, ect, etc, etc. It's designed to be like that, that's how I like it. I get high and listen to music, I enjoy that, actually there's very little music I listen to straight. Getting high is a part of my every day existence, so this doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I'd recommend getting high to listen to most of my music. [Laughs]

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

"on the newest hymnal to be released from this monolithic post-hardcore figure?"

he's hardly monolithic! and he started making music in 1983, so i don't get the post-hardcore part either. maybe i am just musunderstanding. or don't know what post-hardcore means.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I'm not quite sure I see the monolithic either actually (although I guess most of his post-Napalm Death/Head of David stuff has a certain dread consistency.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

i thought post-hardcore was sposed to be craps like the blood brothers.

not getting the use of the term monolithic. i met him and he wasn't black, rectangular or emitting a low, ominous hum.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 01:52 (nineteen years ago)

1. I don't understand what's so difficult about my usage of the word monolithic. I mean really.

2. Post-hardcore means nothing. It's an umbrella term for a billion kinds of music. and yes, i realize he's been around since the early 80s.

3. I said hymnal. Obviously there was a little bit of humor in there. Just like when I said "post-hardcore" ... it was a small joke

lighten up!

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Thursday, 11 January 2007 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

Ummm, I don't get this AT ALL. I love me some Godflesh, but this sounds like more of your standard post-post-rock, post-Mogwai, melody-deficient slop to me. Whiney and loud. Please give me the goggles that will make this as great as you're all saying. What exactly am I missing?

Jesus Jones (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 11 January 2007 02:18 (nineteen years ago)

Bong hits?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 January 2007 02:21 (nineteen years ago)

You take the bong hits, Ned ? And what's this about Medicine, eh ?

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Thursday, 11 January 2007 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

Does NED RAGGETT smoke weed?

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Thursday, 11 January 2007 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

I don't need bong hits, my music mainlining is quite pure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 January 2007 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

Purity is over-rated

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Thursday, 11 January 2007 03:58 (nineteen years ago)

But Pure is not! And so we come full circle. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 January 2007 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

at any rate I heart jesu and evidently they heart me (dicine)

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Thursday, 11 January 2007 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

which must thrill you, ned (smiley face emoticon)

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Thursday, 11 January 2007 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

:-D

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 January 2007 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

What exactly am I missing?

ears? a heart? a soul?

:)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

Pfunkboy sent me this but my Winzip -> iTunes transfer is fucked, sadly. I may have to actually buy it! Can't wait, regardless.

Oh, and Brad, you still need to tell me about TEH LUSK. What was the plan when you all got together? How did you write such an unbelievable album? Will I ever get that title-track outta my head? Etc.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 11 January 2007 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

my Winzip -> iTunes transfer is fucked

??????

1) pkunzip "kindly_pfunkboy's_goodies.zip"
2) drag the MP3s to yr iTunes library.

er ...

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 January 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

nb: i will be buying the album NO MATTER WHAT. on vinyl, preferably, like i said upthread before everyone laughed and pointed and went AYE, CHINNY RECK-ON.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 January 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, they get to iTunes, but then they don't play. I get the dreaded exclamation mark of doom instead.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 11 January 2007 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

really? christ, that's odd. let me know if you manage to get it fixed or not.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 January 2007 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

I'm thinking the Jesu street team has captured my ipod because 'Medicine' came on shuffle three times yesterday. That tune sounds kind of like Robert Patrick sitting in with Pelican. Me likes.

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

louis, are they mp3s or wmas? it might be something in your itunes settings.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

Dammit, I was unable to d/l it from the dronerock fairy. So when it is actually out? (And hopefully common or garden CDs will not sell out so fast as vinyl? I might actually get one down Rough Trade?)

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

it's out on february 20th, i think. i doubt there'll be any problem getting it on CD.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

OK I've just got another winRAR file to work on WinAmp (the new Cooper Temple Clause album), so a repeat dose of pfunk goodness will do the job. not that that's a hint or anything.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

Scourage : there was no plan other than to have fun making a record with some stupid Tool dough. glad you like !

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Thursday, 11 January 2007 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

Hooray!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 January 2007 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

have fun making a record

This is probably the answer, and I wish a few more bands sounded like they were bloody enjoying themselves, mucking about, exploring what they could do, chasing a spider around the studio and sticking a fucked-up drum loop on top of it for 8.5 minutes...

And don't you mean 'some stupid Tool dough and some stupid Guns And Roses dough'? Seriously, the chances against that record being made increase exponentially when you take BOTH of 'em into account!

If you still get in touch with the other two, tell 'em I said 'Free Mars' (the title-track itself) is 'THE perfect 6-minute pop song'. 'Cos it is.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 11 January 2007 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

Actually CP joined gnr because Sñr rose dug teh lusk so much . but this was well after the record came out. I love that song too, it always makes me think of my crappy old apartment where we recorded my drum parts. Talk about yer tolerant neighbors !

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

Axl Rose loved Lusk? Awesome! Things definitely looking up for the new album (oh, and I was just kidding about the 'chances against' anyway)!

I like the fact that the members of Lusk played different instruments on practically every song, btw. 'membramophones', wtf?

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry, but, (and this is a testament to the high esteem in which I hold ILM's opinion) I've been through this entire album three times trying to hear something magical about this, and don't hear anything but ideas that have been done and done and done again by similarly boring bands like Pelican (who themselves were aping the entire mid-90s Quarterstick roster anyway, hoping longhairs would never find out). Even the production, sound of the guitars, etc, seem a little stock to me, even compared to the better Godflesh albums.

I've played it loud, I've played it quiet. I've played it stoned, I've played it straight. I have even, as grimly fiendish suggests upthread, had a guy come over and tune my ears, heart and soul, but maybe because I wouldn't let him near my balls, this album remains duller than shit for me. Sorry.

Spine Swine (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 12 January 2007 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

this does not sound anything like pelican, get over it

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 12 January 2007 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

also--did you listen on headphones?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 12 January 2007 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

holy.... moley.

this is really really good.

tk (tk), Friday, 12 January 2007 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

'mother earth' stands out on first listen.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Friday, 12 January 2007 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

"mother earth" is great. it reminds me of "plainsong"... in a good way of course.

It's funny how all the metalheads/Godflesh fans on other message boards don't seem to like this as it's "too poppy" and has clean vocals.
And the non metal fans loving it just makes them even worse.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 14 January 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

They can pack sand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 January 2007 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

best comment i've seen (on last.fm, i think): "it's the greatest depeche mode album depeche mode never made."

i don't give a fuck what it is, or isn't, or what people think. all i know is i absolutely love it to bits and can't get enough of it.

still slightly disappointed "stanlow" isn't an OMD cover, but hey.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 14 January 2007 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

Depeche Mode couldn't lace Justin's Boots :)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 14 January 2007 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to that Austin show.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Sunday, 14 January 2007 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

It will be awesome.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Sunday, 14 January 2007 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Depeche Mode couldn't lace Justin's Boots :)

Ahem.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 January 2007 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

so. it's okay. better than silver, but i don't think i like it as much as the s/t. and like every song i'm too busy noticing the fact that he's playing ANOTHER ascending chord thing to really get entranced and float away.

"perfect skin" >>> jesu.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

dude needs a chick singer.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

This is making me just unreasonably happy. It's vaguely poppy! It doesn't have stupid cookie monster vocal effects! It's just giant slabs of BIG HEAVY GUITARS LIKE A BLACK HOLE OF DENSENESS (how does he get his guitars to sound SOOOOO BIG?!?!?)

I kinda understand the Ride comparisons more now - but more in the sense of "this is the way Ride *should* have gone instead of turning into Oasis Lite".

The only way it could possibly make me any happier would be to add girlie harmony vocals. But then it would be early Medicine. ;-)

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Thursday, 18 January 2007 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think his guitars must be made of this:

woah i just spent five minutes GISing "huge guitar" "giant guitar" and "big guitar" until i found an image i liked, only to realize after posting it that it was from an ILX thread and that KATE posted it in the first place.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Thursday, 18 January 2007 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

Hahaha

"It's just giant slabs of BIG HEAVY GUITARS LIKE A BLACK HOLE OF DENSENESS (how does he get his guitars to sound SOOOOO BIG?!?!?)"

---> I read an article where he talks about POD recording! Weird. I would never have thought that he was using some (in my mind) cheesy Line 6 piece to get that. It's a great interview though and he goes into a fair amount of detail about his sound.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

I am deeply pleased in that I'll be reviewing this for Plan B.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Also ... any thoughts on Final? Neurot Records says there may be a full-length later this year. And it's funny, I was at Amoeba (SF) yesterday and I found an old Final 7" from 1995. Two 7-8 minute tracks. It's mostly tones and drones. NICE!

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, Final's great, I have two albums around here somewhere.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm really enjoying it. Sits nicely next to the second disc of Dronevil, but a bit darker.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 19 January 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Jesu are playing with Isis at Bimbo's in San Francisco sometime early April. Yesss!

so excited

tk (tk), Friday, 19 January 2007 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

I wanted to like this more!

But I still like it.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Saturday, 20 January 2007 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

Six recent 'guitar' records that are infinitely better than Conqueror in every way:

1. KTL - s/t
2. Goliath Bird Eater - s/t
3. Aethenor - (long title)
4. Robedoor - Totem Hole
5. The Goslings - Grandeur of Hair
6. Mirag - Witch Queen Ascending

Doesn't anyone care about guitar tone anymore? Or does every just really miss June of 44 for some reason?

Alan Shorter (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 20 January 2007 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

To say nothing of the new Skullflower, of course...

Alan Even Shorter (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 20 January 2007 09:40 (nineteen years ago)

Doesn't anyone care about guitar tone anymore?

I do, and I rather like this one. And I like what I've heard of the Goslings in particular, so schtum.

Arrived yesterday, already listened to it twice blasting out of my stereo system. It is that great. More later.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 21 January 2007 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

I care excessively about guitar tone - which is why I like the Jesu album so much. And that's a really interesting article, thanks for posting it, Octigan. It makes me want to ignore the people who have been slagging off PODs and get one anyway.

Shoes and Shoegazeability (kate), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

i'll never get people slagging off particular pieces of equipment. it usually amounts to "THE PRESETS ARE SHIT," which they always are.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 22 January 2007 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Alan Even Shorter ...

Skullflower? Dude, yes. And the last two Sunroof! records. Matthew Bower is a fucking genius.

Also, I think that the tone of the Jesu record is good, for what it is. It's going for a specific sound, and I think that it does a good job.

But I would have to agree that Skullflower is absolutely fucking radical. I love the blatant psych influence.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

And everyone should hear The Goslings agreed.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

granted i've only heard the silver ep but where was all this praise when godflesh was around? silver sounds like dumbed-down godflesh and the cloying melodies are annoying.

am0n (am0n), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

granted i've only heard the silver ep but where was all this praise when godflesh was around?

Check my AMG reviews dood. As they say. (I do agree that the large part of the appeal of Jesu is not that they're heavy shoegaze but Godflesh refined/redefined -- the lyrical refocus is key too.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

i'll stfu until i've heard conqueror

am0n (am0n), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

i've always praised godflesh. since streetcleaner! they were definitely one of my fave bands of the 90's.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 04:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Streetcleaner was the first thing for me as well. "BREED...LIKE RATS!" Etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

i know people liked them (i loved them) but they never got too far beyond the earache/"industrial" scene or whatever

heads weren't ready

am0n (am0n), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 04:52 (nineteen years ago)

i like the later stuff too. i like it all. i think other people praise them. grunge gets all the ink, but to me the great stuff from the early 90's was a ton of great death metal, godflesh, swans, eyehategod, masters of reality, jesus lizard...oh i could go on and on. i don't remember the mid-90's as well.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

in the mid-90's, i dunno what happened, things started to smell like the nine inch nails more. a corner was turned...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 January 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
I'm crazy peeved that they won't be at the Isis show tonight.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

this is so unbelievably good. i turned it up way to loud and the girl next door came over in a towel to tell me to turn it down. that experience alone makes it amazing.

jonathan - stl, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

HA

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 March 2007 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

So ... will they make the shows next week with Isis??

Brad C., Thursday, 1 March 2007 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

According to Isis' MySpace Jesu's with them next week.

Which sucks for me.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 1 March 2007 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

Update from people who don't download leaks....this is RIDICULOUS. Can't wait to see 'em with ISIS next weekend, although honestly I'm looking forward to both Jesu and Torche way more than the main attration.

call all destroyer, Monday, 5 March 2007 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

still slightly disappointed "stanlow" isn't an OMD cover, but hey

but hang on! listen again to the first 16 seconds. that is more than coincidence. that's a fucking sample.

not sure how i didn't spot this sooner. still.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

Dude uses an Auto-Tune on his voice, right? It seems very obvious on 'Weightless...'. I'm not saying I mind, in fact it kind of works; just saying is all.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 March 2007 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

Sound for Jesu live was very, very bad. Just sayin', maybe it was the venue but Isis didn't seem to have any trouble.

call all destroyer, Monday, 19 March 2007 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

I feel like I shouldn't like this album as most of the elements seem cheesy, but I keep listening to it. I think I really like it!

n/a, Monday, 19 March 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Give in. You'll be metal yet before you know it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 March 2007 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

It is not metal! It is the fatty Bedhead!

vals tips for teens, Monday, 19 March 2007 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Baby steps, sir. We'll have him whistling Napalm Death ditties soon enough.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 March 2007 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

It's not the metalness, it's the keyboards, I think, that are the obstacle, and the vocals to some degree. But I have given in.

n/a, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

i keep meaning to buy a bedhead album. i've never heard bedhead! i am intrigued by the bed and the head.

scott seward, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

They're essentially stoner Joy Division. Kinda. They're good!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. Bedhead were very good. I'm completely boggled at "stoner Joy Division" (unless we're still talking about Jesu, in which case I'll let it pass without remark).

Anyway: Bedhead. Very nice. Like early Pinback, but less precious, more psychedelic. Coedine? Warmer than that. The What Fun Life Was album is particularly nice, not just a bunch of pretty, medicated drones either -- actual songs w/ memorable hooks. Kinda sing-songy, like sailors' lullabies. Drumming is super rudimentary, but it works, somehow. Other records are fine, but they were never again as great as this.

Downside: trad-indie. Sounds good in coffee shops. Exceedingly polite.

Pye Poudre, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Beheaded pwns What Fun Life Was IMO.

Bedhead covered JD's Disorder - very well, I seem to recall.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

They went a bit country-fried though! Stick with their 1st LP Whatfunlifewas which, coincidentally has several great 3/4 songs on it (for that other thread there).

(Mr Seward: I finally got the Armageddon album thanks to your constant eulogising / Caldwell worship. I'm letting it sink in right now - it's quite different to the 1st Captain Beyond.)

myopic_void, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

As Col. Poo points out, other people are often wrong about Bedhead.

They did a nice job with Cher's "Believe" as well (collab w/ Macha).

Pye Poudre, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

bleedin' xpostin' new board.

myopic_void, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Newness Ends by the New Year (post-Bedhead band) is really good too.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

My "180gram" vinyl copy of that album sounds like it was forged from granite.

myopic_void, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

As Col. Poo points out, other people are often wrong about Bedhead.

Indeed.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...

those 2 last tracks from the japanese release has turned into an EP.
"sun down/sun rise".
and it's good, more ambient like.

Zeno, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

It was always going to be a 12" ep. But there was delays and it surfaced on the japanese 2cd 1st.

There's also a couple of ep's later this year to come. A split with Eluvium I think on Hydrahead/TRL.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Could never really get into this one! :-/

conqueror i really do dig. but lately s/t has been revealing itself to me in awesome new ways. some great moody stuff there

Charlie Howard, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

S/T is definitely the best.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

they are all good! a track off of "silver" came up on shuffle the other day and blew my mind.

cutty, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

They are all good... For me, "all" means s/t, Silver, Conqueror, and Lifeline.

Anyone care to comment on the rarities comp. or any of the weirder releases? Wish I could find that stuff...

Usual Channels, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

conquerer really grew on me

latebloomer, Monday, 19 May 2008 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

I really like the rarities comp a lot, "Don't Dream It" is one of the best things he's recorded as Jesu.

aldo, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 12:11 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno, i've listened to my rarities comp. once through and it came across as kinda underdeveloped.

stephen, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

I think the rarities comp is the only thing I don't have... Is it worth it/still available?

jonathan - stl, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

cd is oop but vinyl was due january then april, but it should come soon.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

man, this jarboe/broadrick thing is shit. after the first couple of tracks it's just adult contemporary goth metal and sinister weather channel music. ugh.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 26 June 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

jarboe has some good synth sounds, though. shame about her singing.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 26 June 2008 13:38 (seventeen years ago)

Envy/Jesu split is out now on Daymare Recordings

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 June 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

!!!!!!! Must get.

I liked the Jarboe album! You're right that it does go downhill after the first couple tracks, but "sinister weather channel music" is a pretty heavy claim.

jonathan - stl, Thursday, 26 June 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

haven't heard the Broadrick/Jarboe J2 thing yet, must do that soon, note to self...

stephen, Saturday, 28 June 2008 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

new split with battle of mice (super limited) coming very soon on robotic empire!
