I'd almost consider Let's Get Brutal proto-house or something...it's really early and comes out of the NY Cutting Records scene, so it's more like an electro/freestyle oddity that found a home in the early days of house.

agree in that it's at least as close to Man Parrish electro sound as to late 80s house if not closer. nice link between the two.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder if for each pick people are effectively saying they prefer the genre/style that particular track can be shoved into with relative ease (electro, acid house, detroit techno, euro techno, harder of poppier ardkore/UK rave etc.) as well or there are cases of 'particularly love this track altho i listened to this other genre or subgenre more generally.

vita susicivus (blueski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

For me, The Bells is a track that I would always hear and recognize at just about every rave and club night that I went to for a long time. The recognizability of it is a key factor for me: that track comes on and it instantly stands out, you just know it's The Bells. I think, if you are not a DJ or really hardcore fan, lots of tracks (most probably) don't stand out and are not memorable like The Bells.

I definitely gravitate toward the techno end of things, so it makes sense that it is a hallmark song of that particular genre.

Yeah I agree with all that, I'd have picked it myself but I don't think of it as 'rave' or a 'dance anthem' in a sufficiently broad sense. To be fair the main reason Dominator came to mind for me first was the fact it was on a mix CD I'd been playing while making breakfast, so there you are

xpost: I knew "Let's Get Brutal" as "This Brutal House", and used to play it out loads in Spring/Summer 1987 - it was one of my best floor-fillers. It was around 114bpm, so formed a useful bridge between the hip hop and the Chicago jack tracks.

Urban Hype - Trip To Trumpton

Point of order: the bells in "A Trip To Trumpton" are all harmonically relevant.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

I doubt whether many of these have stood the test of time from the point of view of the thrusting Thatcherkid of 2006 who won't remember them at all.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

'Point of order: the bells in "A Trip To Trumpton" are all harmonically relevant.'

You're right of course, Mr Carlin, but it didn't sound that way to me when I was 12. It just sounded like someone ringing an alarm bell over a dance track, and I LOVED it.

Ruairi Wirewool (Ruairi Wirewool), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'm still happy to hear Energy Flash and Pacific State now, and danced to both out last year :)

Considering (checking Discogs) I first heard them both around 15 years ago, and even that will have been two or three years after they actually first came out, not bad going!!

Did we have a thread where people made bets on what dance anthems from NOW might have similar longevity? That could be interesting.

vita susicivus (blueski), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

but, jeez, voodoo ray, that song will never die.

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I agree with all that, I'd have picked it myself but I don't think of it as 'rave' or a 'dance anthem' in a sufficiently broad sense.

I'm not sure if this is a cultural/geographic difference or what. Most of the raves I went to in the 90s were in the New England/New York area and tended toward the Techno side of things, so The Bells seemed like a rave anthem to me. It always seemed to get a big crowd response.

Matt Olken (Moodles), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

69 "Throw"

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Thursday, 18 January 2007 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

go and higher state of conciousness certainly haven't aged that well.

I think the "Tweakin' Acid Funk" remix of HSoC is pretty timeless, because it only has drums, bass and 303. The radio mix and the mix they used to play on MTV when it was rereleased probably sound a lot more dated. But anyway, it's probably too new to be considered a "rave anthem".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 January 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure if this is a cultural/geographic difference or what. Most of the raves I went to in the 90s were in the New England/New York area and tended toward the Techno side of things, so The Bells seemed like a rave anthem to me. It always seemed to get a big crowd response.

I think it probably is a geographic difference insofar as in the UK, 'rave' as a genre had fairly definitive elements to its sound, and for a while had a pretty strong presence on the singles charts.

I was just reading the other day about the raves that Frankie Bones, Lenny Dee etc played round NYC in the early 90s, they sounded pretty incredible

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 18 January 2007 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

not to me it isn't! to me it's very right. maybe "aged well" wasn't right. they just don't sound as good to me as they did way back when. not that either of them was a favorite song of mine to begin with. whereas pacific state sounds as fresh as the day i ripped open my tommy boy vinyl!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:03 (nineteen years ago)
