Friday, May 4th
Turf Club

DAMO SUZUKI!

Damo's backing band, which I guess he always culls from local talent, will be fucking SUPERB, trust me...couldn't think of better people..

So far the line up is:

Freddy Votel (ex Cows drummer, also ex-TVBC, sometimes in Seawhores, main project is Skoal Kodiak these days)

Brady Lenzen - also in Skoal Kodiak, Noise Quean Ant, and sometime Seawhore

Issac Rotto - Gay Beast

this is going to be so great!

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 January 2007 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

geoff chk yr email.

Other possible cool things:

Foundation Nightclub:

1/20 - Afrika Bambaataa

1/25 - Funkdoobiest (!!), Thirsten Howl III, Evil E

Turf Club:

2/9 - The Hidden Hand (ex St Vitus SST dudes), Kylesa

he board on modern radio is good for twin cities centric stuff. do you post there matt?

haha yeah i'm m@gm@90210 on that board i hang out there a lot.

wrt Faggot:

I, personally, find them to be more interesting to read about than actually listen to/see live. It's pretty much just sloppyish punk/metal to me, I understand there's a lot of "interesting" personal politics/sexual identity type stuff that was cool to read abt in the City Pages thing on them, but it doesn't do much for me musically....but I know people that love them...

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

What/where is the weekly gig some of the Mind Condition dudes have? Tuesdays or Wednesdays I think?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Mint

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

i feel weird lurking on that board cuz everyone seems to know each other or are in bands and whatnot.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 19 January 2007 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

(thx matt)

foundation is a really nice place, and it sounds great.

geoff (gcannon), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

i feel weird lurking on that board cuz everyone seems to know each other or are in bands and whatnot.

yeah it's sort of strange in that almost everyone knows each other in "real life"

foundation is a really nice place, and it sounds great.

yeah i'm so skittish about putting down big $$ on hip hop shows though, my friends were just complaining abt. paying $25 at escape ultra lounge to see 3 hrs of local rap dudes then 30 minutes of Clipse (who didn't even go on until 1:30)

Rhys Chatham's Guitar Trio with special guests: Fog
Written in 1977, "Guitar Trio" is Rhys Chatham's signature composition, and with good reason. The word "seminal" was invented to describe it. With a single, repeated chord, Chatham permanently altered the DNA of rock by splicing the gritty, overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale and Tony Conrad with the elemental fury of The Ramones. The amalgamation was inspired. It energized the downtown New York scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made Chatham a founding father of the notorious No Wave movement. The influence of "Guitar Trio" spread even farther as former students and ensemble members carried its shimmering swagger into the rock mainstream. When Sonic Youth are inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame (in, yes, Cleveland -- and you know it's gonna happen), listen for some G3. It's there.

In 2007 Chatham returns (he expatriated to Paris in 1987) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Guitar Trio" by performing it on tour throughout the US and Canada. And we don't mean it's on the set list; it is the set list. These will be no ordinary concerts, and the ensemble -- pumped up to a formidable six guitars at most shows -- will be no ordinary ensemble. Chatham will lead a band of all-stars at the Whole. The concerts will also feature the original visual projections created for the piece in 1977 by famed visual artist and feature-film director Robert Longo.

Together, Rhys Chatham and company will demonstrate to a new generation of fans the amazing feats that can be accomplished with one chord, six guitars, a rollicking rhythm section and amplifiers set to "Liquefy." The show will also be recorded, to be released on a G3-only CD. The title? It's obvious: Guitar Trio Is My Life.

Rhys will perform with:
Guitar: Erik Fratzke, (HAPPY APPLE, ZEBULON PIKE)
Guitar: Andrew Broder, (FOG)
Guitar: Todd Rittman, (US MAPLE)
Guitar: Ben Vida, (BIRDSHOW, TOWN AND COUNTRY)
Guitar: Rob Lowe, (90 DAY MEN, LICHENS)
Guitar: DAVID DANIELL (JONATHAN KANE, SAN AGUSTIN)
Bass: Greg Norton, (ex-HUSKER DÜ, GANGFONT FEATURING INTERLOPER)
Drums: Tim Glenn, (FOG, BATLORD)

A new, slim, trim, and vigorous Fog opens the show.

Get here early to see this once-in-a-lifetime event!

John Justen, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

woah this is like the Internet in HD

i went to vamp handz on sunday night at the entry cuz the drummer in the band i'm in is playing with to kill a petty bourgeoise now too and i hadn't seen him yet...

heatdeth -- yet another andrew broder project -- opened up, they were pretty good, formless noise like cluster or something.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

hey wow, in my browser this thread has no bottom menu bar. THREAD OF MYSTERY.

How do people feel about Gay Witch Abortion? My current TC <3<3<3

John Justen, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

for out of town peeps, i am asking about Gay Witch Abortion the band, not the political stance, which i am 100% behind.

John Justen, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)

I saw a bit of them, thought it was good...I'm pretty much pro-anything w/Shaun Walker on drums, he's great....although..i would say that more members wouldn't hurt, i'm getting a little tired of the 2 man thing.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

(jon did you ever get the yoleus record? i haven't yet but i know it's out)

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

i just remembered that i ordered a cd from fratzke's band, like, months ago and never got it.

i played at the nomad a few weeks ago and it was totes awesome.

Jordan, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

no, i've been really lazy w/new stuff lately, outside of emusic. also, i just got my vinyl back from the dude who had it on loan, so i've been sifting through that, which is taking up much listening time.

John Justen, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

yeah sorry i didn't go jordan. nomad is nice. you guys seem to be doing okay in mpls though, at least enough to make it worth the trip?

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

jordan, i have no idea what yer bands name is.

John Justen, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

dreamland faces are cool (maybe a bit schticky vocally). saw them open for jason webley @ turf, and then saw them in a basement. nice people.

That Damo Suzuki show *was* awesome, as are Faggott, though M@tt's description of them is pretty much otm.

Did that Jerry Jeff Walker at the zoo show already happen? rats.

BigLurks, Monday, 18 August 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

Faggott are better to read about than see live because you only have to READ about that dude's butthole rather than SEE it.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:55 (sixteen years ago)

the wiki says they have some prog thing going on, but its one of those misspelled names that always makes me nervous

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

During the L.D. 50 era, the band was famous for wearing extravagant make-up, seen in both their music videos and live concerts, and using unusual stage names such as Kud, Gurrg, RyKnow, and sPaG.[

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Thursday, 19 March 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i don't know why i think this, but my gut is that they are "prog" in that sorta what if dream theater liked radiohead kinda way...but this is strictly a gut feeling.

be on the treadmill - uh! - like OK GO (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 19 March 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

oh man i am going to be so irritated if that is the case, really want to see Torche, but will not sit through crapnoodle for any band, i spend too much time around that shit as it is.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

by the way i claim trademark on the Crapnoodle genre tag as of right now.

Hey that thing you like? I hate it. (jjjusten), Thursday, 19 March 2009 22:14 (sixteen years ago)

john a couple youtube videos seem like trouble for dredg. my gut was not quite right...now i'm thinking '80s rush but the emo/nu-metal version.

be on the treadmill - uh! - like OK GO (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 19 March 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

nice to meet you, matt. i had fun (although i was super exhausted) and i got to get my corn pancakes fix at maria's the next morning.

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Monday, 23 March 2009 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

nice to meet you as well.

really enjoyed the set, i left after the second set to go to the turf to see the danforths CD release show...but yeah you guys definitely bring the party, really liked when you would do a big rhythmic breakdown, also the part time lover cover was cool....definitely seems like a perfect dance/party type vibe.

"feet don't fail me now" was my favorite, and also that ballad you opened with dedicated to someone's uncle or grandpa or something.

everyone is great players, i could almost do with more soloing personally

it was funny going to an early Milo Fine/Davu Seru/Paul Metzger free jazz thing then to your show I felt like I traveled the entire spectrum of jazz.

Reege & Leif (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 23 March 2009 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

thanks. yeah, the tuba player's grandpa had passed the day before, so it was a little weird when he dedicated the song to him and everyone was like "whooo!". he didn't mention that he had died, maybe so as not to bum everyone out, but what we played ("just a closer walk with thee") was the traditional new orleans send-off.

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Monday, 23 March 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

oh jeez yeah that didn't come across at all, i don't think the crowd was trying be insensitive. sorry to hear that.

Reege & Leif (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 23 March 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, it wasn't anybody's fault and i don't think he was offended. that song was really for his/our benefit anyway.

btw i think i misspoke, in addition to the tuba player, both trombone players and that snare drummer are all local minneapolis dudes.

i'm grand like auto theft 3 (Jordan), Monday, 23 March 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

you are pretty much local! :)

The Meat Puppets played this tiny Mankato bar just after I moved away, too. Like the kinda bar that all the local whatever bands and bands that ain't shit in Mpls come and play. Would love to have seen them there.

would be so dope

very, very intrigued by the possibility of seeing music in kampala, but not sure if our schedule will allow. i actually think a film about changing musical traditions in areas recently or currently beset with conflict would be interesting. like, is there "conflict music?" are people seeking refuge in older ways or forging new shit in light of new and alarming social conditions or what?

hey now here's an idea maybe

OX-OP ARTS PRESENTS:

Non Consensual Post Dada Constructivist Cerebral Warts
Art/Music/Film Festival 2009

OCTOBER 22nd- 25th • SOO Visual Arts Center

On October 22nd through 25th, SOOVAC Gallery will host a conceptual tour de force seldom seen outside the two coasts.

The large main Gallery will feature a major retrospective of two hometown Minneapolis heroes of the international flatstock design and printing world: Burlesque of North America and Aesthetic Apparatus.

The side gallery will present a bizarre opening of local artist and alternative music mogul, HAZE XXL. A multi-media onslaught, the exhibition consists of 100 individually hand-made art CD sleeves, each containing original art and individual Polaroids, along with HAZE XXL created objects d’art featured in numerous national shows including the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. The show marks the first and only release of the Halo Of Flies/Gay Witch Abortion collaboration album. Just 100 CD's produced, and that’s it forevermore but not surprising coming from the former head of Amphetamine Reptile Records who initiated his label by originating the whole “limited edition thing in music” back in the 1980's.

Each night of the four-day event, performance art takes on a literal meaning with live music sequestered in yet another gallery within the gallery. The musicians will be performing behind large screened windows facing the main gallery, harshly backlit so that the audience sees only silhouetted shadows and movement. Four security cameras inside the room will broadcast those performances live onto screens in the main gallery, playing with perceptions of time and space and lessening even further our distinctions between reality and the alternate broadcast reality which is far to often blurred.

The Opening Event will also offer an additional layer of altered perception, featuring the short films of renowned artist Chris Mars. Primarily known for his deeply surreal oil and pastel images, he has taken to animation
and film with all the intensity and incredible detail of his oil paintings.

Buy

The Black Heart Procession / Bellini at 400 Bar - Minneapolis, MN $12.00

my gangsta ain't NEVER been on trial (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

there is an unclaimed ticket for FOTL for anyone that is not yet in possession of one

i am going to be a bad man and say that i saw black heart procession @ triple rock and they were sadly boring. would like to make drinking plans with folks that go to that show however, while i enjoy the dulcet tones of teh groats (i am prepared to hate the fuck out of final fantasy TBH, so i might want drinks whenever they are on as well).

The looming shadow of the big baller/shot caller (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 6 November 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

uhh ok so ticketweb.com is saying "none available" for the XX at triple rock -- triple rock website is NOT saying it's sold out.

stub hub has them going for ~ $50

i've got mine but was going to acquire another one for a friend and slept on it until now. what does this all mean? is it doors-only now, or do y'all think there are some left at record stores? the fetus? treehouse?

goole, Friday, 6 November 2009 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

hmm...i don't know if they sell triple rock tickets at record stores

i think they usually leave some tickets for the door, but not positive....

i'd just call the triple rock

The looming shadow of the big baller/shot caller (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 6 November 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

if they do sell through all the local stores like first ave does, i would go to roadrunner, they tend to sell out way later than treehouse or fetus

The looming shadow of the big baller/shot caller (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 6 November 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

ah good pt

goole, Friday, 6 November 2009 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

afaik one of the dudes im going with still has an extra FOTL ticket btw

PHEAR MY POORAPULT (jjjusten), Friday, 6 November 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

i am so bummed i can't go to FOTL.

btw, another great place to score "sold out" first ave tickets - the down in the valley locations in maple grove and crystal...

The looming shadow of the big baller/shot caller (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 6 November 2009 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

goole I ~may have an xtra xx ticket but I won't know for a while

My stance being "the bulk of metal I hear doesn't really hold much appeal for me" which I guess is still true so n/m, but what I heard of those dudes rocked.

so i don't know how it went after i left but the gay witch abortion thing was apparently just bands playing in the basement of this building, videotaped, and streamed onto a projection screen in the gallery space. which was....whack, imo.

gff did you stay long enough to see gwa? did they switch it up and have them set up on stage, or was it all ~via satellite~

(♯`∧´) (gbx), Sunday, 2 October 2011 21:45 (fourteen years ago)

no, i didn't stay long at all! we'd had kind of a long day, after looking at all the art and having a beer we bailed and watched snl.

i guess i didn't 'get' that about the live streaming. from the basement.

the tax avocado (DJP), Monday, 3 October 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

hey guys, any suggestions for mpls venues that i could look into for booking my solo project (chants)? instrumental beat-oriented stuff, sampler & drums. my best shows have been for rock/indie/hipsterish audiences as opposed to dance clubs. i've only played there with the brass band, so i don't have many connections in other scenes.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Monday, 3 October 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

speaking of which, i'm playing at the nomad on the 15th with mama digd0wn's brass band. as always, we'll be cooking food and serving it free at set break.

I don't know about local artists these days, but two Oct. shows that look intersting are Mike Watt @ the Turf Club (St. Paul) on 10/7 and Com Truise @ the Triple Rock (Mpls) on 10/17.

*sad hug eomticon* (Control Z), Saturday, 22 September 2012 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that fucking ruled. that one song gira said was 'in progress' was fucking ludicrous. too bad he didn't seem happy with the show. my ears are ringing pleasantly.

global tetrahedron, Saturday, 22 September 2012 05:30 (thirteen years ago)

that fucking ruled

otm (despite aforementioned probs w/ the vocals, for which Gira apologized to the audience & had clearly been super-irritated by all thru the 2+-hour show)

I wanted to see the Blind Shake for $5 @ the Ritz tonite, but after Swans last night & Melvins Weds night I just haven't got it in me. A shame, bcz I <3 the Blind Shake so.

*rad hug eomticon* (Control Z), Saturday, 22 September 2012 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

sad to hear michael gira wasn't his usual bubbly self

jalapeno kloppers (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 24 September 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

he wasn't being a prima donna or an asshole or anything, he was just justifiably upset with some of the sound and then i'm pretty sure the band missed some cues at a certain point, which has to be frustrating.

oh shit really? i completely forgot about that band

goole, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

i'm still so pissed off at what they've done to ruin the sound at the 400 bar i'm not even going to see one of my favorite bands ever (MoB)....fucking dicks ugggg the archers show sound was soooo bad

jalapeno kloppers (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

what changed? i never much liked that bar but i don't remember it sounding great like ever

goole, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

trans am gave me hearing damage there, so when i'm famous they'll put a plaque on the wall for that

goole, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

well it used to sound "Ok"...basically they built a new wall dividing the stage part of the room from the bar part...which totally fucked up the acoustics and blocks off all the sightlines from the bar side....like just go! it's the most retarded renovation i've ever seen in my life

jalapeno kloppers (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

*rad hug eomticon* (Control Z), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

goole, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

i mean it's burma...i also really hate the bigger sullivan brother because of a personal interaction when we played there so i'm kinda biased.

jalapeno kloppers (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

i mean it's burma

yeah I don't even care how shitty it sounds, I sorta have to go? gonna get there earlyish so I can position myself for "optimum" acoustic reception though.

*rad hug eomticon* (Control Z), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

i'd go up front...probably....the whole thing sounds like a garage now!

i saw burma at the main room for the first reunion tour and it was godlike

arby's, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

Of course you were right, M.H., but Burma in a garage with terrible sound still > no Burma at all, to me anyway. "That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3.

kinda bummed i didn't go to burma, heard it was great

also heard bob weston did a lot to make it sound considerably better than the archers show from ppl that were at both

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 5 October 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

so as long as bands have a member that's a respected sound engineer and producer they should be fine!

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 5 October 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

i had actually forgot to buy tickets and wasn't going to go but a friend called and she snagged one for me so i drove down in spite of knowing i'd miss half the set. it was a pretty subdued show, shadowy sounding, and jandek hid behind a piano for most of it. still, it was great. some yahowa 13 grooves (idk maybe i'm a little off there) + awesome horn work + jandek doing his thing. really glad i made it.

NOW THAT WAS A GODDAMN SHOW. At the Turf Club last night, the Blind Shake continued their tradition of not failing to not disappoint, and the Birthday Suits caused me to grin with my mouth wide open and my eyes bugging out, a sure indicator of quality. Also found The STNNNG excellent, much improved since my last sighting of 'em in late 2010. TWIN CITIES ROCK MUSIC PERSONNEL: YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT.

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 January 2013 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

Well now that should be a thing. My only nitpick is that I feel strongly that they ought to be called The STNNNG, but the singer's taste in footwear more than makes up for this tiny flaw.

*rad hug eomticon* (Control Z), Monday, 7 January 2013 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

Dear Friends,

On Saturday, January 19th we will be hosting the tenth installment of our "Rock 'n' Roll Breakfast Series." And it's a big one. We will be hosting not one... not two... but three fantastic acts (all of whom are celebrating brand new albums) while you chow down on free pastries and coffee. Please join us for a foot-stompin' good time!

TREEHOUSE ROCK 'N' ROLL BREAKFAST SERIES VOL. 10
Saturday, January 19
10 AM Sharp
Triple Record Release Show featuring CHARLIE PARR, THE BLACK TWIG PICKERS, and NATHAN BOWLES

Charlie Parr
Fans of local and roots music and friends of the store are certainly familiar with Charlie's incredible guitar and banjo finger-picking and raw honesty. He's simply one of the greatest active practitioners operating in the folk-blues realm. His previous album When the Devil Goes Blind was released on our in-house label Nero's Neptune and is probably the single best-selling album in the nearly twelve-year history of our store. He has a brand new album called Barnswallow, which he'll be unveiling with record release shows next weekend at the Cedar Cultural Center and at this very special in-store performance. Getting to see Charlie perform in any setting is a treat, but as an added bonus he'll have some of his friends with him...

The Black Twig Pickers
This unique Appalachian folk ensemble has been making music together for over a decade. In that time, they have recorded collaborations with Charlie Parr and the late, great Jack Rose, and released many albums of their own. Their mix of old-time folk/country/gospel/bluegrass with modern drone and improvisational music (the Pickers' Mike Gangloff founded the legendary drone-folk group Pelt with the aforementioned Rose) has earned them a devoted international following. Their brand new album Rough Carpenters will be released by the prestigious Thrill Jockey label on February 19, but Thrill Jockey has agreed to let us sell copies a full month in advance for this in-store!

Nathan Bowles
Nathan is a member of The Black Twig Pickers, Pelt, & Pigeons. He is a virtuoso banjo player and his debut solo instrumental album A Bottle, A Buckeye has just been released by local label Soft Abuse Records. He'll be doing a solo set to begin the festivities on Saturday morning. Arrive early to check him out!

As always, we will be providing FREE coffee from Caffetto and delicious breakfast treats from local pastry chef Joanna Biessener (Solera, La Belle Vie).

Thanks,
The Treehouse Gang

whoa what's up with this?

goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah i was actually at the turf last night and heard that.

not totally surprised, first avenue has been promoting shows at other venues like the turf, fine line, and cabooze pretty intensively for awhile now.

i think they've coveted a venue in between the entry and the main room. entry is zoned for about 200 i think but they've packed more in but it's miserable. but there's definitley shows where they could maybe sell like 350 tickets but that would be a miserable main room show, too packed for the entry, and good for the turf or fine line.

frankly, i've been getting worried about the turf...sc@l0n is a fucking crazy person and recently came in a threw a fit and canceled a bunch of booked shows and closed the club sunday - tues. my fear was that when light rail started next year some condo developer was gonna come through and offer him a few million to knock it down.

first ave will fix is up w/kitchen and new bathrooms, etc

all this said....it's bittersweet for me. for nearly 20 years it's been as close to a home bar as i've ever had, through the current regime and before that rob and leah rule....it's been a pretty free space to do whatever the fuck you wanted, stay until 3 am after a show if you knew the folks, hang out, do weird DJ nights, whatever....

was definitely an era that was gonna come to an end eventually.

the memory i will take is of my first band playing "shots" by neil young & crazy horse at about 45 minutes past bar time with my friend pretending to fellate me and shooting a fake kid's laser gun in the microphone

You kind of had to be there but I think you can also probably picture it.

HAHA, yes I can!

Glenn Miller-core (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 19 December 2013 21:50 (twelve years ago)

I think I missed the last Man Sized show but I saw the Entry gig ten (or more) yrs back during the holidays when Brian Paulson played with them, I seem to recall he had arrived striaght from the airport to get onstage with them (or maybe that's just how I want to remember it) and it was a great show on a perfect, snowy Mpls night.

I cracked a Man Sized Action joke in front a packed First Ave crowd at Replacements "tribute" thing, didn't get very many laughs.

significant old school mpls post punk news! (rifle sport is todd trainer of shellac's old band if you are unfamiliar)

Rifle Sport
One year after we recorded Voice of Reason at Blackberry Way, we went back to the studio to record a second album. It was never released and the multitrack and master tapes are long gone as far as we know. No idea what happened to them.
But Terry Katzman had a cassette of roughs and possibly final mixes, which he handed off to me last night and I'm currently digitizing.
Hoping to do some sort of release of it if it all turns out well. Some very cool and uncharacteristic Rifle Sport tunes. So far the recording sounds excellent.

It's all 60s/70s rawk covers. They used to play The Uptown regularly, and later The Eagles in Seward. And recently at a KFAI benefit at the Turf:

Saw them last night in a tiny club in Chicago. Between being featured on Twin Peaks and opening for Jenny Lewis, looks like they're getting bigger. Also getting more 60s garage/pop as they grow. Great live show.

one year passes...

Since the modern radio message board disappeared (or went underground?) it's hard to find out about local music from a source that's not some strib-affiliated bullshit. This seems okay https://swhenever.com/

Yeah I find it really hard to get info on local shows these days, esp since I'm not on FB, of course I can't really go to any shows but still
