It's Lily Allen's left tit.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

What, when she was 11? Jesus.

The NME tears Kate Nash's single apart in the newest issue, but I haven't heard a note of her yet. I'll take Lily Allen bandwaggoners over, I don't know, Bloc Party ones, I think.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

I have tried, but alas I don't see any merit in her music at all.

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

it is a bit lily.

who are the bloc party bandwaggoners tiki? no sarkiness i just wonder who you mean if anyone specific.

pisces (piscesx), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

She's the 'Caroline's a Victim' one, isn't she? She's all over MTV2 at 1 in the morning. I don't like the song, but I can't deny it's not an earworm.

However I wouldn't compare her to Lily Allen at all on the basis of that single (it's all I've heard of her). Then again, she is one of those stage-schooly types; her artiness is contrived.

MacDara Conroy (MacDara), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

She drowns in the own vacancy of her message. She brings nothing new in her music and nothing new in lyrical content. Frankly I don't want to hear about guys who thought her bum was cute and what happened thereafter I want to hear something thats maybe useful or applies to me somehow. And if you can't provide that then a musical fun romp is ok from time to time but not in a serious tone such as her music is. I prefer something of a parody or revival in genre et. al. The Pippetes.

wesley useche (electronicmaji), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

You know you hit on one thing that bothered me... I don't care what a female looks like as long as her music is good, but writing a song about people liking your bum plays right in to the sexist industry paradigm that her pal Lily Allen has tried to rail against, insert every conceivable caveat/qualifier here. It's the musical equivalent of showing lots of cleavage. You are asking people to look and evaluate what they see.

And I don't want to be mean because she will probably google herself someday and actually read this but I think that unfortunately she is just not a very attractive girl.

I try not to be sexist, but that song MIGHT actually work if she were HOT. (Actually, it is just bad, nm).

Otherwise, it is without flair (which Lily Allen does indeed possess, whatever you might think of her) and devoid of everything in precisely the manner you describe. Perhaps the 2600 spins a day she gets in myspace are all just people playing it again and again trying to figure out why the stuff is getting so many spins.

Or maybe it is just third-tier "anti-folk" (whatever that is) and the only reason anyone cares about it is because she knows Lily, and trades off of that only too readily I might add.

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

i like the b-side to this single.

jimbo (electricsound), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

who are the bloc party bandwaggoners tiki?

I just meant theoretical ones.

Have you watched the video? I really like it. I think its good. What Le Tigre were described to me as but weren't. Of course they were better, but that isn't my point. Is it? I like it.

I heard that song and had my guard all up ready for 80,000,000 reviews saying how she sounded like Catherine Tate's 40-year-old schoolgirl Lauren, but none are forthcoming.

Is she actually gonna be popular then?

The level of vitriol on this thread is perplexing. "Merry Happy" is pretty damn good, though "Caroline's a Victim" sounds like straight crap to me.

Don't see how singing about liking (and losing) a guy who once liked yer bum plays into any kind of "industry paradigm". It just plays into life. And the fact that Kate's singing this while not being another grotesque cyborg simulacrum of perfect hotness makes it a hell of a lot more charming than it would be otherwise.

Nothing in "Merry Happy" reads as "serious" to me, but rather (at best) poignant in an offhand, everyday sort of way. Hence, the charming. The lyric writing isn't totally "vacant", either, though that's the tone the voice intentionally adopts. Nothing splashy, but well-observed and even well-turned throughout.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

Jeezis. Such wit. Yeah, I get the Lily ripoff thing going on, and I can see that what Kate's offering kinda pales in comparison, but it just ain't that bad. You don't like it? Fine. Go with that.

Pye Poudre, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

more cyborg simulacra of perfect hotness, less kate nash please

she makes allen sound great: i don't like allen's songs but at least they are songs; allen can at least sing, after a fashion. nash can't even speak.

Pye Poudre, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

No vitriol here, I was actually just grasping for some reason why someone might think she is anything other than a friend of Lily Allen's who has for some unfortunate reason picked up a guitar. She's just not good and I'm not going to stand idly by while she is made into the next big thing without expressing that opinion, multiple times if necessary. There are just way too many people that aren't friends with anyone important or influential that are making good music for a thread like this to have any legs here, in my opinion. And I only checked out her stuff because I actually LIKE Lily Allen and I had the highest possible hopes that here was yet another interesting artist. Sadly, that is not what I found. DUD. Sucks sores.

Saxby D. Elder, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

ok i've read a few weekend on sunday pieces on this broad, but none of them even tried to describe her music. perhaps i will visit "my space" and figure it out for myself, but nothing her boosters or she herself have said recommend her. i'm guessing that her backstory will be revealed sandie thom-style pretty soon. she's a young'un so it's not her fault entirely, but the journalists who promote her are running-dogs.

'Kate Nash has revealed that she is currently writing a series of short stories, and plans to release a book in the future...Nash explained that she is working on a story for children based around a seven-foot transvestite named Roy, and that author Roald Dahl is an influence on her work. "I'd like to release a collection of short stories," she explained. "I'm writing one a bout a 12 year-old boy called George, who meets a seven-foot cross-dresser called Roy. It's a concept about imagination and being whatever your dream is. There's a lot of things I want to achieve creatively," Nash went on to say. Chasing the NME audience in 2010: smart business move or LAY OFF THE FUCKING DRUGS?

National Sockpuppet Helpline (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

it is a bazillion times better than the dickhead song

Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:16 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not familiar with the dickhead song but that new one sounds exactly like a lazy album track from a c. 1987 Brit Indie group.

FEEL THE SUCK

Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:20 (fifteen years ago)

TBF I don't like her voice or her lyrics so this is a bit of a no-win

National Sockpuppet Helpline (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:21 (fifteen years ago)

then this new one, with one line of lyrics and very little of her voice, should come across as her best effort to date

Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

It did! But she was starting from a v. low point on the graph.

National Sockpuppet Helpline (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

I'm intrigued when artists try to completely change up their audience in these death of the industry times tho.

^^^ remoinds me of this Lou Reed quote after the commercial success of "Sally Can't Dance" - "This is fantastic — the worse I am the more it sells. If I wasn't on the record at all next time around, it would probably go number one."

might seem normal (snoball), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

lol that is so much better than last time round, a pity it's not actually any good - i definitely would like to encourage kate nash to continue down this newfound path of "not bothering to write songs" though

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:40 (fifteen years ago)

wow this is horrible.

hahaha

lex is pretty OTM though, I'd forgotten how precious and needy her album was and it seems she's gotten rid of that impulse by forgoing the actual songwriting process

Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 22:52 (fifteen years ago)

haha that new song is amazingly bad

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 23 February 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

haha I had pac's "temptations" playing when I saw that. made it even more lolsome.

I really wasn't expecting that

also: "Written and recorded in less than 24 hours"

owenf, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

She sounds like she's giving birth while trying to channel the 'spirit' of Courtney Love.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

the beginning of this is great

actually when she isn't screaming I really like this, and her screams only drag it down to "not gonna seek this out"

her new EP is out

it appears, after 1.5 songs, to be a massive bag of shit

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Monday, 26 November 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

Is it the same kind of stuff as the 'Underestimate The Girl' track, or is it more in line with her earlier stuff?

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 26 November 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

it's definitely in the new vein, only less imaginitive

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Monday, 26 November 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

she's rather good on GLOW. Maybe that's what she should have been doing all along.

akm, Thursday, 6 July 2017 16:57 (eight years ago)

weirdly, she is actually doing a nostalgia tour re her debut soon.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p07ctstz/kate-nash-underestimate-the-girl

Underestimate the Girl is an intimate portrait of British singer-songwriter Kate Nash and follows her journey over several years in her pursuit to remain a creatively and financially independent artist. After being dropped by a major label, Kate learns (the hard way) how to navigate the music industry as a self-sufficient businesswoman and creative.

I went back to Made of Bricks today after discovering her Christmas song and really, really liking it and... I like it now? Including "Dickhead"? what happened, I am confused
