two favorite moments:

1. "contrary to rumor, i'd like to take a few questions right now."

2. the gtr solo with his arm around the backup singer's waist.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 4 February 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, thanks for catching me up with this. I remember someone saying this was going to happen and forgot about it.

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Well, to be fair I don't have cable, so I wouldn't have been able to watch it anyway, most likely.

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, he looks great, I mean - how old is he now?

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

48, and he does indeed look great.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

Good lord, a guitar solo with a girl around his arm? How does he do it??

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

step one: hire skinny girls.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

Man, I'm not a huge Prince fan, but that was faaaantastic!

Booper Soul (Bimble...), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha Dr. Feelgood!!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

Does somebody have a link to Prince-related Superbowl betting odds? Odds he closes his set with "Let's Go Crazy" = 4:5. Easy money, right?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Rock Lobster...

darrell perry (natlawdp), Sunday, 4 February 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Nice song selection with "Anotherloverholenyohead."

John Fredland (jfredland), Sunday, 4 February 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

so do you think this will be a secular half-time show?

richard wood johnson (rwj), Sunday, 4 February 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ugh, forgot about the Jehovah thing...hope he gives a little love to James perhaps.

Phil Dokes (sunny), Sunday, 4 February 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

they sent out a medley of all along th watchtower w sum foo fighters song that is as clunky as a gypsys jalopy

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I heard that Watchtower / Best of You live song, it was horrid. Of all the songs for Prince to cover, why choose a Foo Fighters song? According to Howard Stern they send a copy to him and asked him to speculate whether or not Prince was going to perform it at the Super Bowl.

def zep (calstars), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Prince is getting divorced, right? "Best Of You"'s double meanings (it's all "are you giving or being taken") probably hit him hard.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't see anything special in the video of the 'press conference.' And the fuck-you to the journos who were there... Aren't people tired of hearing Johnny B Goode?

def zep (calstars), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

also the Foos had a radio hit with "Darling Nikki," so maybe he's returning the favor

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 4 February 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Prince and John Waters look kind of separated at birth to me.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 4 February 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

I've never especially liked "Anotherloverholenyohead," but I like this version. I should really try to see him live once while he's still performing at this level.

Rockist Scientist, Hippopoptimist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 4 February 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

He is playing in the rain and appears to be dry.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

He is playing in the rain and appears to be dry.

He has powers we cannot comprehend.

Yeah, the Watchtower/Best of You song was a bit of a buzzkill.

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

Best of You sounded way better than a foo fighters song has any right to expect to, though

mizzzell (mizzzell), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

Love that "Anotherlover" solo.

Welcome to the Pazz and Jop poll. (M Matos), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

did Prince always shred in concert?

milo z (mlp), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

omg yes

Welcome to the Pazz and Jop poll. (M Matos), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

That's true.

In my head, I had mixed up "Best of You" with "Times Like These", which is somehow even worse of a song. So I was pleasantly surprised that it was any other song he was covering.

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

Audience sung Purple Rain outro sounded so awesome

Marmot (marmotwolof), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

aahhh! That was great! The ending was pretty spectacular.

Tape Store (Tape Store), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

considering it was raining all up on his shit, the guitar kept cutting out and the mix was bad, PRINCE FUCKING KILLED IT!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

The marching band was used pretty tastefully too. I agree, considering the mix was weird and the rain must have been a factor, Prince did a great job.

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

chaki otm. mizzzel too.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad he made it through the halftime show without literally being struck by lightning.

Maltodextrin (Maltodextrin), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

Certain arrangements were made when he and Mother Nature had their sit-down last week.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

It was strange when they started off the show with CG lightning (that WAS CG, right?)

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

chaki otm

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

The mix was great. All you could hear through my TV was vocals, guitar, and drums (and some keyboards at the very end). Total metal Prince. Loved it.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

Great, so I missed another Prince TV performance. Why didn't I turn on my TV when I knew half-time was coming?

Rockist Scientist, Hippopoptimist (RSLaRue), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

so great that the most riveting and r-o-c-k live performance you'll see "in super bowl history" (not that i've watched every one) is from someone most folks consider pop/ r&b.

from the lightning that seemed to cue it to how well he played under those circumstances -- fucking hell! i wondered about that one bit after "watchtower," had no idea it was a foo fighters song. maybe he was playing to his audience a bit, playing his hits (mostly) and the rock songs to show he can shred better than stevie ray, et al? i half expected a j.b. song myself.

i also thought he worked with stadium sound really really well, and foregrounding the vocals, drums and guitar seemed intentional, down and dirty style, awesome.

i'd love to hear a record from him where he's just a trio: electric gtr, bass/ keybs, drums. or has he done that and i don't know? bootlegs sounding like that out there somewhere maybe?

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

yes there is one its dope AND it's an official release or it was limited or something. its called the undertaker.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 5 February 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

oops i guess its not.. but look for it! it rocks! from wiki:

[edit] The Undertaker
Prince originally intended to give this live CD away free with 1,000 copies of Guitar Player Magazine in 1994, but he was told by Warner Brothers that he couldn't. Some rare copies were leaked and heavily bootlegged.

The album's track list was as follows:

"The Ride"
"Poor Goo"
"Honkey Tonk"
"Bambi"
"Zannalee"
"The Undertaker"
"Dolphin"

Zachary S (Zach S), Monday, 5 February 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)

Greatest Super Bowl halftime concert our generation will ever see. It stopped the rain and made it turn back on again. Wardrobe malfunction's got nothing on this.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 5 February 2007 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

great performance
terrible game

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 5 February 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

Well, you're in Chicago. But yeah, Prince was great .

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Monday, 5 February 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

Best halftime performance in recent memory by a long shot. I loved that the dancers were doing their thing stepping in puddles. A real chance of electrocution and Prince couldn't care less. Classic.

def zep (calstars), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:03 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe that when you search "Prince" on youtube the first thing that comes up is Bonny Prince Billy.

I also realized today that if you search "khyber" in Google the Philly rock club comes up before the pass.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

That mix had to have been a screw up. They seemed to finally fix it near the end so you could ACTUALLY HEAR THE BAND.

Prince was pretty rocking.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)

Somewhat OT: I was disappointed that the Chevrolet commercial with all of the songs about Chevys did not include "Chevy Van." That's not alright with me.

John Fredland (jfredland), Monday, 5 February 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

this finally reminded me to go look up "while my guitar gently weeps" that he played on from the rock and roll hall of fame a few years ago....fuck!

yeah i wish prince would do more guitar albums

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 5 February 2007 06:14 (eighteen years ago)

the rainbow children is a good guitar album!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 5 February 2007 06:15 (eighteen years ago)

Until tonight, I have never seen a SB half-time show that was anything other than suck-ass. That little bastard set the world on fire— a once in lifetime burst of incandescence.

That goddamn guy basically got up there and sprayed FUSILLADE after FUSiLLADE for 20 minutes during the annual pinnacle of the worst and most cyncial impulses our world has to offer…

We are lucky to be alive at the same time as he…

I know nothing of football, but the fans I was with told me that was the most exciting SB they had ever seen… and the Rainbow Children fucking sucks.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Monday, 5 February 2007 07:49 (eighteen years ago)

That was completely transcendental and weird. It looked like a movie except better.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 5 February 2007 08:06 (eighteen years ago)

paul mccartney kind of kicked ass during his halftime show.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 5 February 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

Best youtube comment evar:

well i do know the bible says its wrong for a man to wear womans clothes or act like a woman and common sense tells me that is unnatural. i do notice prince fans are a vulgar lot. he has no muscial talent. if we want a black soul artist, bring on wynton marsalies and have him play something appropriate for a time of war and sorrow and misery for so much of the world. taps, amazing grace, etc. try 'ravel' if you like music that appeals to your animal senses. this is rot.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

I thought the cover material was a smart touch ... in case anything went awry, at least he would never be accused of embarrassing himself at the Super Bowl playing too much of his own stuff. The All Along the Watchtower thing was spectacular though -- awesome guitar soloist, he is.

Also, major props for wearing that sea-blue/turquoise suit on a purple neon stage.

FWIW -- U2's SB performance five years ago is still one of the most moving things I've ever seen on television.

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

i don't get the adulation here. i mean it was nice in parts and i'm sure better than what you usually get, but i'm not into the abbreviated song thing and yeah there was some decent guitar-playing, but you already knew he did that, right? right?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

i half expected a j.b. song myself.

how absurd a ruckus would be raised if he did "sex machine" though? omg sexy man sings about sex on my kid's sunday afternoon delight show!

I would also definitely like The Undertaker if anyone's got it.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

"The Undertaker" was actually a short movie released on VHS in I think like Japan only? anyway, any records are probably sourced from the tape. and yeah it's awesome ("Honky Tonk" on the tracklist posted is actually a version of "Honky Tonk Women")

Looks like nobody has put the whole think up on YouTube but here is one track:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_RrKorh4Uc

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 5 February 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

yeah there was some decent guitar-playing, but you already knew he did that, right? right?

The combination of the performance with the weather and the venue was made it so great for me. He had a huge stage, and I thought he basically nailed it. The middle section was somewhat weak by comparison, but just the visual of him performing in the rain with all the smoke and the marching bands and shit... if the Super Bowl is supposed to make me feel jingoistic, this is the first time it worked for me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

i don't get the adulation here. i mean it was nice in parts and i'm sure better than what you usually get, but i'm not into the abbreviated song thing and yeah there was some decent guitar-playing, but you already knew he did that, right? right?

prince is no dave matthews, that's FO SHO'. he wishes he was as funky and as free as the DMB. Whatever. He's got a funny looking guitar? Big deal. Does he have his own ice cream flavor from Ben and Jerry's? NOPE.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

pls

also, i didn't think the guitar playing was all that great compared to other stuff he's done

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

also, the whole tempo was just sort of lo-soul coked-up (or redbull-ed up, at least). which seemed to be set by the producer more than the artist, and i guess it makes sense in context. also, yeah i didn't watch the game so i didn't have Ze Dramatic (Purple) Rain Drama Context.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

the guitar playing was great!

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, gab's right. He's been better on the guitar. Didn't take anything away from the whole performance, though--it wuz fab.

J (Jay), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

and i guess it makes sense in context

Repeat x 1000 until it starts making more sense to you. What can you expect from a 12-minute set in front of a nationwide audience, of whom 95% of them know only your most famous hits?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

duh of course he's done better guitar playing elsewhere!

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the man did not pave his road to be his best at THE SUPER BOWL. Think about that one for a moment ... that performance, while good, is otherwise known as "working harder than usual for cold, cynical cash."

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

it's like, I totally enjoyed the paul mccartney halftime thing too for the same reasons, because it didn't suck! it's prince on live tv, soloing and dancing around and having fun and dodging lightning=it's pretty awesome. i thought the stones kind of sucked last year though.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

so does this mean coldplay will play Super Bowl LXV? I mean I guess you have to be old and fading to do the halftime gig. How bout Metallica next year?

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't know that Undertaker thing was where his version of "Honky Tonk Woman" was from, a friend put that on a tape for me years ago, great cover.

the halftime show sounded like kind of a mess to me, the guitar way too high in the mix and kept cutting out, but it was still pretty cool. also I was kind of relieved that he didn't bring out any big name cameos or cede the stage to anyone else, usually these things are a clusterfuck of ALL STAR DUETS and shit like that. loved "Baby I'm A Star" and "Purple Rain," would like to hear a good studio version of the "All Along The Watchtower"/"Best Of You" medley.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not a Prince fan (like some of his hits, but that's it), but this was unadulterated top class entertainment. This isn't meant to be anyone's greatest concert experience ever, it's meant to be enjoyed by just about the most diverse audience you can think of. Did he succeed in doing that? Yes he did. But he ALSO did his own thing. And then the Foo Fighters cover! The post-9/11 version of "Where The Streets Have No Name" may have been the best Super Bowl halftime show moment ever, but that's a song U2 have played live twenty-four million times already. Prince doing "Best Of You" - I wouldn't be surprised if he's only going to play this track a couple of times live, ever. And it was still pretty great.

That's why it was fabulous entertainment. (and this thread should have been on I Love Entertainment)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 5 February 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

i still think his guitar playing was great, it could have been worse, they could have unleashed celine dion or some shit on us. to compare a superbowl half time show to the rest of his output is kind of stupid? but whatever.

"1972:
Ella Fitzgerald, Carol Channing, Al Hirt & U.S. Marine Corps Drill Team"

Yeah that sticks out, but it isn't until '91 where there seems to be this effort to get progressively bigger/more high-priced stars every year. Every time I hear about these things nowadays its always in the context of "will this year's X outdo last year's Y?"

now THAT's a variety show.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 5 February 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

I think Mr. Que's point is that the mere fact that it's a halftime show means it's going to be subpar compared to the rest of his output so, from his perspective, making that comparison is the equivalent of looking for something to complain about. I don't want to put words into his mouth, though.

I just find it odd that a grotesquely overbudgeted national sporting event is currently the premier musical event the majority of the country will see.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 5 February 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

didnt need the watchtower intro but the foo fighters cover is great. i like prince stripped down and rocking out. i forgot how good he is at it. he might not pick the best songs (but then prince has always liked big heavy FM rock songs) but he does them so well (like when he did shania twains still the one).

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 February 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

if he's gonna play the superbowl, i want it to be overblown. I want him to rip a guitar solo and i want the stage to explode, literally, before he walks onto it. I want the FAMU marching 100 to hit the field halfway through, and i want it to rain purple for 'purple rain' and to end it by throwing down the mic stand and having the crowd sing along.

dang perry otm. also pointing out the obvious flaw with ilm since like the very beginning.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 5 February 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

so, from his perspective, making that comparison is the equivalent of looking for something to complain about. I don't want to put words into his mouth, though.

that makes sense when and if he or others say his guitar-playing was great for a halftime show, not his guitar-playing was great full stop, depending on how much benefit of the doubt you give to a given dude. if you want to call playing devil's advocate to encourage some criticism instead of hi-fives/otms 'looking for something to complain about', so be it.

i especially liked let's go crazy once he got past the intro and proud mary. i'd pretty much heard heard the solos before but i suppose he didn't have much room to invent right there (he would have if it hadn't been a medley, but i realize this is too much to ask for).

Here's how great that halftime show was: I watched it with a super-bowl party crowd of family & friends of all ages, most of them not Prince fans or even especially music lovers, and the room was spellbound. My friend's 3-year-old seemed not to be paying attention, but at the climax of Purple Rain he held up his toy, air-guitar style, and stuck his fist in the air like a rock star, like he could *feel* the attitude somehow. Everybody applauded.

i had completely forgotten that i had picked up this video last year. hidden away up in the attic till now, as my video machine aint all that. but i have just checked it, and even though the sound wasn't crystal clear, but still was worth checking out.
its a strange dark 40 minutes thats for sure.
starts with model type girl calling Victor (remember all that nonsense !) on the phone in a bland office lobby - getting the brush off and then taking massive overdose of pills.
then cut to rest of the 'film' in which prince and band (only 2 really - drum and bass by michael b and sonny t) get down some deep and heavy funk-n-rock on a rehearsal stage while the girl falls about in her drug induced state, including one upfront throwing up soundeffect at the end of 'the ride'.
lo-fi filming make this look like a warhol type of art movie.
i guess this would be classed as a For Fans Only type of release.

Different Strokes...
... For different folks... Everybody has there own taste in music, right ? personally, I think Prince is in the same class as Nilli Vanilli, but that's just my personal opinion.. Now, if they really wanted to raise some eyebrows, they would have booked KISS to do the halftime show.. Maybe next year the NFL will consider a band that all can enjoy, like AC/DC or GODSMACK

here's my theory
It's black history month. The Superbowl featured 2 black coaches. For the "first time ever," as we have been repeatedly told.

The commission just "had" to have a black artist. Male. hmmm. Michael Jackson's out. And you can't have a black rapper. (don't ask me why, but i'm sure they have lots of studies to "prove" this.)

So, who do they have? of course, PRINCE. He's black, clean (maybe) articulate (well, does he ever speak?), good-looking (debatable, but then people's taste differ) So, Voila! We have a winner.

Of course, being a game played by two mid-western teams, they could have offered someone like Springsteen, or Billy Joel, but he was relegated to "anthem singer." He wasn't black enough.

Didn't someone give a speech a long time ago about not being judged by the color of your skin....?
