Mike Dixn, Thursday, 1 March 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

The request body was too large to be cached during the authentication process

WTF???

I was gonna list a bunch of stuff but I guess it was too much.

part 1:
Alice Coltrane - World Galaxy LP. Beautiful copy. A very rare record of swirly cosmic jazz.

Konstruktivits - Glennascaul LP. I sold this in one of my purges and regretted it greatly. My favorite of his.

13th Floor Elevators - S/T LP. Shockingly, I have never owned a copy of this record, making do with a tape Steve Millen made me in the 80's.

V/A - Objectivity: The Object Singles Album LP. Just found out about this label and somebody had this for cheap along with a ton of amazing UK DIY 7" goodies I couldn't afford.

The Cramps - Psychedelic Jungle LP. This record is more subtle than the debut. To replace a CD copy that I sold.

Chris & Cosey - Songs Of Love & Lust LP. Shockingly, I have never even HEARD this record. Until now. It is really great.

Vic Godard & The Subway Sect - A Retrospective LP. On Rough Trade, a handy collection.

Tom Waits - Foreign Affairs LP (white label promo). Slowly finding all of his stuff.

Suicide - S/T LP with 3 bonus tracks. And a different cover! On Red Star! It's a 1980 JEM repress.

Yello - Claro Que Si LP. Original on Ralph in great shape.

Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Scream LP. Cause that remastered single CD SUCKS (overmodulated, clipped sound) and I am selling it ASAP.

Richard Thompson - Live (More Or Less) 2LP. Obscure repackage of the "...Bright Lights" LP with a bonus live album that is one of his best things ever, especially the long versions of "Night Comes In" and "Calvary Cross" on side 2... Thompson has never sounded heavier to me.

Killing Joke - Fire Dances LP. Replacement of a CD copy, mint.

Black Flag - Everything Went Black 2LP and The First Four Years LP. Used to have "Everything", needed it back. Don't have the singles and comp tracks on side 2 of "First Four Years" so it was worth it.

Einstuerzende Neubauten - Haus Der Luege LP. Replacement of a CD copy.

CTI - ELemental 7 LP. Upgrade of this stellar Chris & Cosey side project.

Ramones - Leave Home LP. Dubious Portuguese pressing with "Sheena", sounds just fine though.

Captain Beefheart - Ice Cream For Crow LP (promo). Absolutely pristine and beautiful, replacement of a CD copy.

John Cale - Paris 1919 LP. Ditto.

Nina Hagen - Nunsexmonkrock LP. Upgrade of this fantastic LP. One of my early 80's favorites.

sleeve, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

part 2:

The Creatures - Feast LP. Don't usually see this around my parts, never had or heard this before either.

Yoko Ono - Approximately Infinite Universe 2LP. Eight bucks! Hell yeah!

New Order - Blue Monday/The Beach 12". Replacement of my copy I stupidly traded in for some noise record circa 1987-88.

The Glove - Blue Sunshine LP. Never had this LP and it was $7.

Herbie Hancock - S/T 2LP on Blue Note Reissue Series. I listened to this last night, classic stuff, nice clean copy.

Neil Michael Hagerty - The Howling Hex 2LP. Probably the highlight of Hagerty's post-Royal Trux years, I foresee many listens ahead.

Miles Davis - Water Babies LP. Outtakes from various eras. Upgrade copy.

Bush Tetras - Rituals EP. Drastically underpriced ($6) copy of this classic EP that I used to have.

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Join Hands LP. Replacement for a copy long since traded in.

Big Black - Atomizer LP. Ditto.

Bikini Kill - Pussy Whipped LP. Only had this on tape, I think I have all their stuff now.

Miles Davis - Jack Johnson LP
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things LP
Miles Davis Quintet - Miles Smiles LP
Miles Davis - E.S.P. LP
Miles Davis - My Funny Valentine/In Concert LP
James Blood Ulmer - Free Lancing LP
Count Ossie & The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari - Tales Of Mozambique LP

(all in good shape for $5 each from one dealer, I didn't have any of these)

Gong - You LP. Pretty beat up Virgin Records copy, I need to compare sound with my Charly version. This one has a different cover.

The Doors - Morrison Hotel LP. I probably sold this 20 plus years ago, bought it again for "Peace Frog" and will probably discover other good things I forgot.

Wall Of Voodoo - Call Of The West LP and Dark Continent LP. Definitely an ILM-influenced choice. $7 for both!

sleeve, Thursday, 1 March 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

sleeve, you are winnin! wotta lotta gems in there...

There are no record stores near me but I did just order some sort of TVPs rarities disc that I hadn't known about. Don't know anything about it and it hasn't arrived yet.

I would love to have that Bush Tetras! I saw them a few times and used to have a big crush on one of them (and I thought they were great, of course). I am pretty sure that there is (and I have) a ROIR cassette of theirs but couldn't begin to find it, even if I had a decent cassette deck (which I don't).

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 1 March 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

The Bush Tetras ROIR cassette's available on CD as well (I have it) - you can get it on Ebay for not that much - less than buying a new tape deck anyway!

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 1 March 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks! But I really need a tape deck!

i was thinking I could get a good vintage nak on ebay but they are still pretty expensive! (and which one to get?!!) (that part is serious, if anyone knows which is the best Nak to get...)

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 1 March 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

Just got the "No One Left To Blame" compilation of twenty American punk unknowns '76-'82. After 18 long years of searching, the Fems "Go To A Party" will play once again at my house. Am elated beyond all belief.

Bought this at his Jazz Standard show last night:

Vinicius Cantuaria - Silva

o. nate, Saturday, 10 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

$43 total, all vinyl, from two thrift stores in Greenpoint this afternoon (part one, since apparently the post is too long otherwise):

Blitz Mob Die Organisation (German hip-hop double album, Blitz Vinyl Germany, 1995 -- the crew on the cover has 13 guys in it, and they do a song called "That's The Joint." Never heard of them before myself)
Hoagy Carmichael A Legenday Peformer & Composer (RCA, 1979 -- most of the tracks are actually sung by other people; nice die-cut or whatever it's called cover with a big round hole in the middle)
Ray Charles Wish You Were Here Tonight (Columbia, 1983 -- pop-country album; I remember liking it when it came out)
Divinyls Temperamental (red vinyl Chrysalis UK pressing, 1988)
Johnny Dodds Ji Grandid Del Jazz (Fabbri Editori Italy, ??? -- I used to see these collections a lot in Germany in the '80s, and used to own ones by Ayler and some other people but don't anymore -- lovely books inside with lots of Italian notes; I'm not sure what year they actually came out, though)
EPMD Strictly Business (Sleeping Bag/Fresh, 1988)
Junior Ji (Mercury, 1982 -- first copy I saw in one part of the Thing's basement bummed me out by having a Kool and the Gang LP inside instead, but a half hour later I found another copy with a more torn up cover but with the correct LP inside, so I combined the correct LP with the better cover, slick, huh?)
The Headboys The Headboys (RSO, 1979)
Little Girls Thanks Heaven! (PVC EP, 1983)*
Mother's Finest Mother Factor (Epic, 1978 -- I never owned an album by them before! But reportedly this is after they'd mainly abandoned metal for sub-par disco-funk)
Juice Newton & Silver Spur Juice Newton & Silver Spur (RCA, 1975, sealed! Record collectors please advise: Do I open it or not? And does the fact that the top of the sleeve is rather scuffed up negate the sealedeness?)
The Quick One Light In A Blackout (Epic, 1982 -- which will be the better '82 Brit-soul album, this or Junior? We'll see!)
Revanche Music Man (Atlantic, 1979 -- Italodisco LP I've never seen before by Malavasi and Petrus, who later masterminded....Change, right?)

* - Christgau review:

http://robertchristgau.com/get_artist.php?name=little+girls

xhuxk, Sunday, 11 March 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

part two (included in the same $43):

Rhythm Team Rhythm Team (Missle, 1987 -- definitely looks to have disco-metal possibilites, though I never heard of it before. Kenny Arronson is listed as one of about 20 "additional musicians" in addition to the about 10 people in the core group; Dave Douglas is on the former list playing trumpet too. And there is a rapper, and the guitarist looks extremely hair-metal)
SPK Machine Voodoo (Elektra, 1985 -- homoerotic proto-industrial/elektronic boody muzik on a major label? Or maybe not)
The Tymes Trustmaker (RCA, 1974 -- It hadn't occured to me that the same group who did the late doo-woppish hit "So Much in Love" later did the early bubbledisco hit "You Little Trustamaker," but now I know)
Andy Zwerling [i[Spiders In The Night[/i] (Kama Sutra, 1971 -- I know nothing about this guy, but I know I've heard of him a few times over the years, possibly from fans of Lenny Kaye, who plays guitar on this. Any info would be welcome. A quick google seach suggests it may be worth considerably more than the $2 I paid for it.)
Metal Killers (Kastle Killer compilation, 1985, with Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head, The Hard featuring Bernie Torme, Quartz, Sledgehammer, plus "Fast As a Shark" by Accept among other things NWOBHM and not)

xhuxk, Sunday, 11 March 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, and a new Wolf Eyes LP - Black Wing Over the Sand. It's very nice. All the blurb people say how listening to this stuff is supposed to make me feel awful. But I just think it sounds cool. Such nice attention to tone on the hollow thumping noises. I like how it splits the difference between gristly "rock" pounding and the ambient squeak/groan marathons, which can get annoying or tedious, respectively. Have to listen a few more times, but I think it may wind up as one of my favorite Wolf Eyeses, up there with Dread, Mugger and Dog Jaw.

dlp9001, the hilly michaels LP didn't change my life, but i do like it. here is what i wrote about it on the rolling country thread (oddly, the international encyclopedia of hard rock and heavy metal by jasper and olivers seems to prefer his second album, which it says contains some weird hard rocking tracks; i've never heard it myself):

Hilly Michaels LP I bought is a more fun new wave era sideman going solo album than the Lindsey Buckingham album, I'd say. The cover is very colorful, not unlike the Dan Hartman Instant Replay album he'd appeared on two years before (before 1980, that is.) Dancey beats are stolen from Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man," Blondie's "Call Me," and some minor glam-rock hit I can't place, but in a coked-up bubblegum L.A. studio pop-rock context, I guess. Though maybe Hilly was from England, come to think of it. Producer is Roy Thomas Baker; guest contributions come from Greg Hawkes, Davey Johnstone, Ellen Foley, Karla de Vito, Liza Minnelli. G.E. Smith, and Dan Hartman, among others. Rolling Stone Record Guide gives it just one star, dismissing Hilly as a "jive new waver," a "finger popper in post punk clothing," but then again so is Lindsey, who they say sings like a '50s teen balladeer and who they give three stars. Lindsey does sing better, I guess. But Hilly has more energetic hooks to pull off the zaniness. (And less to do with country music, come to think of it.)

It's all vinyl LPeeez today:

K-Tel's Dance Machine - a fantastic comp of disco stuff from '76, I'm really pleased with this, despite the occaisional skip - "As advertised on T.V."

R.E.M - Dead Letter Office (well I used to have it eons ago)

Sad Lovers & Giants - In The Breeze (rare as hell comp of their early material, including a Peel session)

U2 - Unforgettable Fire (somehow I ended up only having this on cassette which isn't really all that acceptable because I pull it out at least once every few years and I've never wanted it on CD)

Laurie Anderson - Big Science (I almost bought her entire United States live thing but didn't realize life could be made easier)

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti (never had it on vinyl before!)

Huang Chung - Huang Chung from 1982 - yes it's Wang Chung before they changed their name...I found it impossible to find their first single on s1sk and when I listened to this in the store I found I really liked it, despite my expectations

O.M.D. - Architectures & Morality - never owned this one before. Long overdue, really. Hopefully Grimly Fiendish will be happy for me now.

The Church - promo 12" with acoustic version of "Grind" on it - I was just talking about this record last night in fact and today I found it in the bargain bin. I was saying how the acoustic version of Grind on El Momento Siguiente just isn't as good as this old promo 12" version which I taped years ago but don't even know if I have the tape anymore.

Joe Jackson - Night and Day - I don't know how good this is as an album, I think the reviews say not very, but having Breaking Us In Two again was enough for me...and it was only a dollar

Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche 85 - here's another situation where somehow I only ended up having it on cassette and that not being acceptable because it's one of those things I know I'm going to continue to pull out...

scott seward, Sunday, 15 April 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

Long x-post going back to xhuxk on Hilly Michaels...JR Taylor also preferred the 2nd album, which always left me puzzled. No idea what's meant by weird hard rocking tracks...it's the kind of comment that makes me wonder what the reviewers actually heard. Lumia has a couple of sort-of-fun throwbacks to the first album ("Reach For The Vitamins" is probably the best of these) and a markedly worse drum sound, and replaces the sharp power pop with a more early-80's mush. It also includes a few power ballads that are sort of excruciating (e.g. "Our Love Will Last Forever" which doesn't sound like it's trying to be funny). The sleeper track on the 1st album is probably the very, very, very Sparks sounding "Something On Your Mind" which appeared in Caddyshack.

dlp9001, Sunday, 15 April 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know the answer to that, Scott. I had their first album years ago, liked it well enough, but I guess not enough to get more. I can't claim they're a band I've ever been really passionate about.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 April 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Also I bought Fairport Convention's "Liege & Lief" today on CD (remastered w/two extra tracks). Not something I ever expected to be into, but sometimes strange things happen.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 April 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

Also here are some other things I got that I didn't confess to anyone:

Cabaret Voltaire - that live Hacienda thing (it has Shakedown on it and that's enough, though I admit I was drunk when I bought it and I'm worried I'll be disappointed)

Crawling Chaos - The Gas Chair (I know, I know, it sucks...but I have everything else of them now and damn if I won't be a completist)

Dream Syndicate - Days of Wine & Roses (I still haven't played this yet! Argh!)

Andy Partridge Fuzzy Warbles big arse CD boxed set (yes I really did)

Also I've got some amazing obscure post punk to sift through from The Dangerous Girls (three CD's in the post from the drummer!!!) and this Belgian band Digital Dance, who were quite good as far as post punk goes. I got it from the drummer of Isolation Ward, who were on Factory Benelux if I recall correctly.

Okay, I was not really getting into this Andrew Hill CD too much, to be honest, but the John Gilmore solos! A lot of his playing so far could be in the Arkestra setting. He's mining very similar ideas in his solos here. I might even be able to pin down particular phrases I've heard before (not that I'd be able to describe them in technical terms).

I got the Fa Ce La/Raised Eyebrows 7" by the Feelies.

Raised Eyebrows ain't all that different, but Fa Ce La has about 10% of the polished fullness of the album version. It probably has about as much body as Anton etc look capable of creating, as suggested by the band photo on the sleeve, which somehow makes them appear even wimpier than the album pic does. Still sounds great, anyway! Nice sleeve too.

iTunes -

Long May You Run - Neil Young w/ Stephen Stills. Part of my continuing quest to identify the best road songs of all time.

Umbrella - Rihanna. Pretty amazing single I have to say, sans Jay-Z up front. But as long as you can get him out of the way at the beginning and he doesn't fuck it up with a damn verse in the middle, I can take it.

Jimmy Webb - Wichita Lineman. Based on a recommendation here. It's a good take on the song, but a little under-produced and not nearly as good as the Campbell's take.

Andy Summers & Robert Fripp - I Advanced Masked. ILX rec. Interesting, but in comparison Michael Hedges stuff (another rec from here) is better.

Chris Cornell - Billie Jean. Basically a live track, and again I think could have used more time in the oven. Still love the Cornell though.

a lot of it is tough sledding, but over a third of it is definitely going on the iPod -- the Percy Grainger & Arthur Cantrill pieces in particular are fantastic. the Jack Ellitt concrete piece is wonderful -- the liners claim it was "most likely recorded in the early 1930s" and that is almost difficult to believe, the fidelity is so good for it's time, but technically it is possible

anyhoo, i just bought that Grant McLennan/Robert Forster Intermission "Best of the Solo Years" double disc, which is quite nice, with very pretty packaging. Also picked up that Soul Jazz Tom Moulton comp which is super awesome -- the price tag said $14 but the cashier rang it up as $34! Yikes. I was able to talk them down. I also just ordered that Charles Mingus Cornell live set that came out a few months ago, but it hasn't arrived yet. Can't wait!

GAHHHH you bastard, i would've bought 3/4 of those (own everything is good here already), why why why why can't i live in your town/city and have been to that shop first :-(

stephen, Friday, 2 November 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

i know, right? i mean this is a pretty crappy record store, wholly dependent on what the local folks and nearby college students bring in, which mostly tends to be garbage. the only new stuff they ever really order, with a couple of exceptions, is top 40-type stuff and those "20th Century Masters" greatest-hits compilations.

though for the past 4 years, i stop by once every couple of months and find some gems. they date everything when it comes in too, and those gira albums were sitting there for a couple months.

Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking

The CD has a couple of bonus tracks that are also worth tracking down - outtakes from the Liege & Lief sessions - the cover of "Ballad of Easy Rider" is especially nice.

o. nate, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

Definitely. I've had the CD for a while but the LP was cheap and... I don't know, I'm a glutton.

s. morris, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

I've done the same - bought things on vinyl that I already had on CD - especially if it's like only a buck. Sometimes I plan to give one away, but it also can be interesting to hear the differences in mastering between the LP and the CD reissue.

How did you get on with them? My German friend got me Caverna Magica for my birthday last year, and I see his name mentioned approvingly on the Beardo thread, but I can't quite lower my "taste shield" enough to get into it. Must try harder!

Jamie T Smith, Thursday, 8 November 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Nightdrive, the new chromatics album arrived the other day. It's great. Mask has got to be one of the eeriest, most wonderful songs of 2007.

Joris Stereo, Thursday, 8 November 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

Also got the Lord Invader CD at the new Smithsonian Folkways store in Highgate.

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Thursday, 8 November 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

There's a Smithsonian Folkways store in Highgate? Wow. Is it near that classical/experimental place?

Jamie T Smith, Thursday, 8 November 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

It's just opposite the station, down from Sound 323/Second Layer. The guy who runs it used to run Folkways' distribution for Europe, so he figured he may as well open to the public. Nice guy, actually. Super enthusiastic. Said they'd stock the entire available catalogue eventually, but not any of the copied recordings of out-of-print tiles that you can order from the website. Anyway, all the single CDs and LP are a tenner. Cheap! And he threw in a free Pete Seeger sampler too...

Mark Clemente, Thursday, 8 November 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I was pretty happy with that find. $17 for all four of them.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 8 November 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

That happened to me with my somewhat large list upthread - found 5 Flaming Stars 7"s for 50p each, 3 X albums & 3 Gallon Drunk albums (all the newer remastered versions) for £3 each etc.

Yeah, having a bit of trouble myself, although I used to work in a health food store so my subconcious was already primed for his majesticism. The more ambient, almost musique-concrete bits I definitely enjoy, but when the sappy melodic parts kick in I check out a bit. I'll give it a few more goes before I say anything definitive, though.

my girlfriend just got her first turntable...

so i got my turntable working and been playing albums! even went to that thrift store and looked thru most of what they had. not to worry not much! christian, christmas and country. i took a chance on something not good called mike and the mechanics. also another totally german thing because i saw a mention of the word kraftwerks, again not what i thought and an old johnny cash thing and an old willie nelson one. do you know my fingers were dirty after all the looking?!

I bought a lot of stuff this week...

Comus - Complete 2CD
Pharoah Sanders - Best of 2LP
Alice Coltrane - Lord Of Lords LP
Einsturzende Neubauten - Strategies Vs Architecture Vol 2 (surprisingly difficult to find)
Steve Reich - 18 Musicians LP on ECM, bliss. Also Tehillim which I had already in worse condition and Desert Music which was very disappointing.
Pain Teens - Destroy Me, Lover LP
Dinosaur L 2LP reissue

Thomas Brinkmann - Ulla/Vera EP (now I have them all except this is 2nd press white cover, waah)

Ptolemaic Terrascope #36 mag/CD

i picked this up the other day, haven't listened to the disc yet, but solo doug yule! i was hoping for a new kendra smith song but it's sadly just a 90s live track..

electricsound, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that was a bit of a letdown, so is the Yule track to my ears. But Barbara Manning and the older folk stuff is all fantastic! Plus the last two tracks, haven't picked up on much else yet.

I finally managed to track down a reasonably priced copy of the first Quicksilver Messenger Service LP, and I was knocked out to hear the Take Five cover. White Heaven's jazzier side is suddenly far less surprising!

I also bought an album by some French Canadian guy called Robert Charlebois. It's just called Robert Charlebois/Louise Forestier, and AMG seems to have it down as being as influential 'to young Quebecers' as Sergeant Pepper's, which might not count for much round here, but strong words, still. Can't say it blew me away.

Quickersilver Messenger Service being the newer, shreddier incarnation of Quicksilver Messenger Service. Come correct!

s. morris, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

how do you feel about the jean claude vannier lp?

cw, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

It's a dense record. Do you like Vannier's arrangements for Histoire de Melody Nelson? This record has that same sense of playfulness, only with Serge and co. replaced by bonkers musique concrete. It's not as immediate as HMN but I think it might hold up better in the long run. The repeated themes of HMN get a little cloying if you listen too often, whereas the Vannier LP always feel fresh. I would recommend it!

s. morris, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

I would add that -- if you're in the US -- getting the CDs of any Finders Keepers release is the way to go. They might not be as pretty, but unless you've got a record store near you that stocks the LPs you'll have to pay $24 plus shipping online compared to like $12 for the CDs on overstock.com. Of course, if you're a vinyl fetishist that doesn't matter, and the Finders Keepers packaging/liner notes are pretty great. Just something to think about.

s. morris, Monday, 19 November 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

It is sometimes worth waiting, though- a lot of Finders Keepers releases get cheap reissues on B-Music, the US branch of Twisted Nerve/Finders Keepers/Delay 68, usually within 3-4 months of the UK release if not sooner.

In the last couple months or so:
Andy Votel- One Nation Under a Grave
Glass Candy- Beat Box
Cabaret Voltaire- The Voice of America reissue
v/a- Dirty Edits, vol. 1
v/a- The Portable Supersound
Benji B Presents: A Space Odyssey
Lindstrom- The Contemporary Fix EP
Daft Punk- Alive 2007 preorder
The Cure- Pornography 2xcd reissue (Amazon US has this for $15)

Giorgio Moroder- E=MC2
John Cooper Clarke- Zip Style Method

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 03:09 (eighteen years ago)

s.morris, yeh Vannier is my favourite of Gainsbourg's arrangers, his work on the cannabis soundtrack is astounding too. He did a show at the barbican last year with a full orchestra and choir doing L'Enfant assassin des mouches & melody Nelson in their entirety. it was pretty much mind blowing

cw, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds excellent! I'd be interested to hear how they did L'Enfant live... did Vannier have tapes of the concrete material or did they have people banging and buzzing in real time?

I really dig that Delfonics album. My soul collection is SERIOUSLY lacking for a guy that loves the hell out of that genre.

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

oh some overlap upthread, I knew I'd posted some of those

to answer s. morris' question one month late, the Harmonia record is about what I expected -- beautiful, meandering, wallpaper jams but only they really had that sound

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yoshi Wada - Lament For The Rise and Fall of the Elephantine Crocodile

Just found this on UbuWeb. Incredible stuff, and recorded in an empty swimming pool!

And which of the Obscure Tape Music from Japan albums would you recommend? (From the samples I've heard, it sounds like all of them.) Shame it's only select ones available as LPs.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

The new CD of the Yoshi Wada sounds a lot better than the vinyl transfer on Ubuweb, also longer tracks and pictures of the recording session. never seen a set of bagpipes that long

Some of the Obscure Tape Musics are more consistent than others but every single one has at least one great track. Vol. 4 is the prettiest / most ambient. The Ichiyanagi Vol 5 has a 20 minute improv feedback set with Cage & Tudor from 1967, incredible shredding noise.

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Tricky - Blowback
Freedy Johnston - Never Home

Ballin' on a budget.

kiss out the jams, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

I remember reading about Ichiyanagi in Japrocksampler, but can't remember the details, or even if it said anything at all about that particular performance. All I recall is that he was Yoko Ono's beau before Ringo.
