I got this yesterday, holy shit! I love "Put All Your Eggs in One Basket Then Watch That Basket!!!" too!
Definitely wish there was cleaner sounding drums on it. A drum machine might even be better. This is nonsense. NONSENSE.
― Drooone, Sunday, 20 May 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)
No way, still sounds like crap. Zach likes to play his drum kit to the point of destruction and he's been sounding steadily worse since The Devil Isn't Red. Sounds like he's banging on a cardboard box.
― xox, Sunday, 20 May 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)
But, apart from the hang up with the drumming, it's a fun and shreddily excellent album with great vocals, no?
― Drooone, Sunday, 20 May 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)
Otherwise it comes across as rather samey - that "Spirit Of Radio" riff + Ronald Shannon Jackson drum pattern formula doesn't have much mileage in it.
OTM!! I couldn't remember where I'd heard that riff before.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 20 May 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)
answering my own question at the top of the thread, i saw her last night w/band and yes it was a good time. she's completely adorable, for one thing. (brought her small dog onstage to kiss and cuddle at one point.) and worked up a good joyful frenzy on a bunch of songs. vocals wandered a bit, but i figure it's kind of hard to hear herself up there. recommended!
― tipsy mothra, Monday, 9 July 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)
I'm gonna see her next week I think. Pretty sure Zach Hill is on this tour (he's playing as Holy Smokes on one date) so that should help no end

Saw her last night, played with Zach and another guitarist. Sound at venue problems apart, and considering she was clearly not too well healthwise it was a great show...the closing Patterns Of A Diamond Ceiling really tied it all together and Zach Hill's drumming just elevated it again. No effects on the vocals live, which I thought was odd, given the liberal use on the record, but it was still good.

yeah I agree w. that
saw the same show as tipsy mothra, it was cool for sure but the crazy gtr runs and crazy pounding drums all at once is somewhat of a highwire act. sometimes they got a little out of sync. but she is really fun. oddly enough she seems like she could do the guitar parts in her sleep but the vocals are a little more of a struggle live!
― dmr, Monday, 16 July 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)
i was happy with "patterns of a diamond ceiling," wasn't sure she'd do that. as much as the actual music, i enjoyed her presence live, her persona, whatever. she's a real odd one, in a very likable way.

I'm into her a lot but relistening to her album, I really do not like the production. I think if she maybe recorded to tape and didn't have everything constantly overloading, I could enjoy it even more.

Just to be clear, the Fiona Apple mention in that post is only because of the long album title. I got a polite e-mail from a concerned reader who thought it came off as misogynist, as if I were saying female musicians are all either Lilith Fair material or else the rare interesting exception. (But I /like/ Fiona Apple!)

so yeah the new album is good! maybe not as strong songwise as the first one (although i'm still settling into it, so it's hard to say), but i'm pretty much a sucker for what she does. i like her whole vibe, sort of a wide-eyed ecstatic sufi-poetry thing, but (as the man says) WITH GUITARS.
