love this band

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

great band.
new one awesome. split single with psychedelic horsehit is awesome. first LP awesome. awesome live. awesome awesome awesome.

ian, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

yup

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

i think the first album is great. haven't heard the new one. i said somewhere else that i couldn't really understand how they improve upon the first album. it almost seems like they should have just broken up after they put that out. i have no idea what i mean. i hope i love the new one too. it's just that diminishing returns make me sad. they didn't work with a "producer" on the new album, did they?

scott seward, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

DangerMouse

vals tips for teens, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

new one sounds almost exactly the same as the first one but, like, more so

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

it's like their recording equipment is in new zealand and the band itself is in ohio

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

strongo, have you heard the Der TPK album? i like that a ton too. i don't even know how you describe how that was recorded.

scott seward, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

i havent, is it on teh siltbreeze?

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

tnv sound like they press their records on dryer lint

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Nice to see Columbus bands getting ILM love...

NYCNative, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

(that's a good thing)

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

strongo OTM.
also, they improve upon the first album by MAKING IT SHORTER. not that the first one was too long or anything, but like i said on that other thread, i am really into listening to sides more than full LPs lately. i'm digging the whole lo-fi/early-nineties nostalgia/photocopied artwork thing that's kinda going on. i think siltbreeze is kinda the perfect label for times new viking. we'll see how the matador record ends up sounding; i don't want to get my hopes up, but i have a feeling that tnv have this kind of winning formula (x noise + y yelling = z hooks, or something like that.) and so long as they don't like, record in a studio with a producer like scott said, i think they oughtta be alright. i guess the hooks have to run out sometime, though.

ian, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

oh, lots of xposts. other favorite ohio band of the moment is psychedelic horseshit. the der tpk has a similar lo-fi gauzy sound to the times new viking, but the vocals are mixed waaaay differently.

ian, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

what i like about em is they sound like a punk rock band that isn't worried about whether they sound like a punk rock band, or which particular punk rock band they sound like, or what their "influences" are or whatever. they sound contemporary without consciously updating anything, just like this is how they wanna sound. sorry, that's totally inarticulate. let's just say they're really good.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

did they have the dude that did the old GBV shit work on the new album too?

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

"i havent, is it on teh siltbreeze?"

yeah. i think it might be vinyl only though. ian would know.

scott seward, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

both bands just sound like siltbreeze to me! they smell like tom. or mac even.

scott seward, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently, the cd version of Presents the Paisley Reich has six more songs on it.
Saw them in Belleville, IL with Clockcleaner (who were SO mean to the audience, kinda funny, except there was hardly anyone there) and one friend bought the cd, one the lp. I bought Dig Yourself since I had Presents the Paisley Reich coming in the mail. Keyboards are a little louder on Paisley Reich. That's pretty much the only difference.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

psychedelic horseshit and tnv are totally cool and do columbus freakery proud.

Der TPK album? i like that a ton too. i don't even know how you describe how that was recorded.

great band. some of the TPK dudes are total old-school west coast punkers, but then the band also has another weapon and that's Glenn Donaldson and a buddy of his, both of who apply some totally wild post-production to the music.

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

yeah keybs are definitely louder on new one. one has kind of a "96 tears played by webhanded terry riley" vibe to it.

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually going to see TNV on Thursday. I'm very excited as I have "Dig Yourself" and enjoy it very much. I believe Clockcleaner is playing as well, but I don't know anything about them.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

have you guys heard that one-off band Ego Summit?

it's a bunch of stiltbreezy dudes...some guys from thomas jefferson slave apts and stuff...it's pretty good.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

mike rep's name is nowhere on the paisely reich that i can see... but i haven't read everything etched into the b-side. i think it's just lyrics though.

ian, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

i found an old thomas jefferson slave apts cd in my closet a while back. it's good! for some reason i had them pegged in my memory as being "difficult" but it's very hooky. parts of it sound like it could be on lookout.

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

and i love that ego summit record!

ian, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the Ego Summit record is cool. Ron House, Mike Rep, etc...
Haven't pulled it out in ages.
Molly, don't wear a band t-shirt to the show. Just a bit of advice.

Got it. They're playing at a place called "The Funhouse" (ouch) and I know it's some dude's house / recording studio.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the Ego Summit record is cool. Ron House, Mike Rep, etc...

"etc" is how you refer to Jim Shepard and Don Howland? No, no, no...

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry!

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

i'm just teasing you a bit. in fact, the very title of the record jokingly predicted such comments!!!

QuantumNoise, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

great review jess

69, Friday, 23 March 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

thanx man

strongohulkington, Friday, 23 March 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

I finally got round to checking out the electric eels (via the 'eyeball of hell' cd... great!), and as soon as I chucked it on, I was like, whoa!! Ron House!!!! Then I remembered the Cyclotron cover, and of course, of course, yadda yadda, etc.......

But TPK are pretty great, aye. They just sound like they're having a ton of fun.

gnarly sceptre, Friday, 23 March 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

glad to read a positive review of this, well written too, very excited

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 23 March 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

? i don't get it

I think it was in reference to this --

Clockcleaner (who were SO mean to the audience, kinda funny, except there was hardly anyone there)

every band mentioned in this thread is good!

as far as comparing the two TNV records I think Dig Yourself has more tunes but Paisley Reich rocks harder (+ more raw sounding)

dmr, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

haha MORE raw sounding? i need to hear this.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently, the cd version of Presents the Paisley Reich has six more songs on it.

btw, this is fuckin lame if true

throw a bonus 7 inch in w/ the vinyl or something

or uhh if you have 6 more songs for the record maybe don't press a 1-sided record

dmr, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

i got mine offa emusic haha

strongohulkington, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

oh awesome, i'll have to check for it.

i've had the first one knocking around in my harddrive for a while but i haven't paid it much attention

gff, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Here's the track listing for the CD, I guess some of these were on the Psychedelic Horseshit split

1. Imagine Dead John Lennon
2. Devo & Wine
3. Little Amps
4. New Times, New Hope
5. Slay Atlantis
6. Teenagelust!
7. Ladders
8. Love Your Daughters
9. Allegory Gets Me Hot
10. +++
11. Bad Looks
12. Common Cold
13. Lover's Lane
14. Let Your Hair Grow Long
15. Hiding in Machines

Mr. Que, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

? i don't get it

I think it was in reference to this --

Clockcleaner (who were SO mean to the audience, kinda funny, except there was hardly anyone there)

Yeah, a guy in a Minutemen shirt and a guy in a Misfits shirt drew the fire of Sharkey. He made fun of their shirts and then he complained that there was nothing but a bunch of virgins at the show. They played all their songs about half as fast and he put the microphone up his ass.
Then after about 20 minutes they ended the set with a cover of "Divine Hammer." It was pretty good.

Trip Maker, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

I guess some of these were on the Psychedelic Horseshit split

ah cool. I've got those (#11-13). maybe the last 2 are from some other vinyl-only thing.

dmr, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

DMR I will Leonardo them for you if you like, this weekend.

Mr. Que, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

the sound of pussy galore meets guitar wolf.with punk-pop attitude.like iy.
Devo and Wine is fantastico

Zeno, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

are band names after fonts the next wolf ______ trend?

Mike McGooney-gal, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that would be awesome (xxp)

haha who is another font band?? I can't think of one.

dmr, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

I just listened to "Lover's Lane" from Paisley Reich and the PH split and realized it's actually a cover of Half Japanese's "Thing With a Hook"

and yes to Psychedelic Horseshit! Those cdrs are over before I can realize what just happened... a perfect length.

city worker, Friday, 23 March 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

gbv retreads?

fukasaku tollbooth, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

not really?

Mr. Que, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

i say that lovingly.

fukasaku tollbooth, Friday, 23 March 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

other font bands? timebold, for one and i know there are other just can't think of them now.

Mike McGooney-gal, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

there should be a metal band named Helvetica, but I don't think there is.

scott seward, Friday, 23 March 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

start it tonight, then?

might be too much to title the first album plain, the second italic, and the third bold -- but maybe it's not!

Mike McGooney-gal, Saturday, 24 March 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

might be the best show i saw at sxsw. it definitely was the most wasted i was at any sxsw show, if that helps describe it. moshing (?) in front with the psychedelic horseshit guys was boss.

hstencil, Saturday, 24 March 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

LOL fan mail:

More praise for indie girls who say fuck. Jesus. If there is one constant in the world of badly written indierock reviews, it is that if there is a mildly attractive girl in the band who talks dirty, the album will be reviewed well. From Liz Phair to Peaches (ok.. Peaches isn't even mildly attractive) all it takes for indy boys to heap praise is pouty lips and a filthy tongue.

This is more pretty people making shitty music, giving ultra pretentious interviews to the press, and then back it up with horrible music that sounds like you've let apes into a room with poorly tuned instruments. Seeing them live is only to affirm that the apes might have a better chance at one day being proficient on the instruments they play.

But, they do have everything on the indie rock checklist that gets them a good review

- Pretty Girl
- Pretty girl who says fuck
- Indie to the point that no one outside of their local scene has heard of them
- On a label with a backstory, this time it being a shameless way for indie writers to gush over GBV in an interview about a band that has never even heard of GBV other than that their label released them at one point
- Sonic Youth indie stamp of approval
- Art school graduates who feel that learning to play their instruments would make their music "less pure"

How you avoided giving them a 10 I will never know. Perhaps they were missing a white MC rapping about dungeons and dragons, a guest slot on adult swim, or ironic mullets.

Keep up the fine work,
Chris

strongohulkington, Sunday, 25 March 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

Word on the street is that Connie's Ric-Rac was shut down by L&I. Did Richie book this show?

theoreticalgirl, Friday, 6 April 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

These dudes fucking annihilated Yo La Tengo last night. Not that I was expecting YLT to do anything beyond halfhearted jewfro dadrock but Times New Viking were great. Totally worth the absurd price and the absurd no-smoking thing Yo La Tengo apparently insisted on. So go.

adam, Friday, 6 April 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

haha yo la tengo isn't really the "annihilating" type of band. i've seen them a couple of times and sometimes i really dig the sort of wistful krautrock indie psychjamz they get into...it can verge on boring but if things are right i love it.

i've not seen TNV live, I want to..some people I know were a little disappointed...but I wonder if that's cuz the production is so much a part of this band's appeal.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 6 April 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I kept wanting to turn up the drums at the TNV set I saw.
That sonic aesthetic has a lot to do with it. But they were still good.

i like the new one. boy it's loud. they're sort of made for the age of compression, matador just made their red zone bigger. not quite as many tunes jump out at me, but they also try some slightly different things.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 07:24 (seventeen years ago)

"the early '80s" is awesome

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 07:26 (seventeen years ago)

I'm hearing the old one for the first time just now... but it's really good! Kind of been avoiding them, thinking they would just let me down anyway. Seemed to cool to actually be any good.

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

new one rocks, WOW is it mastered loud. seriously ear-shredding.

in general I'm ambivalent about "intentional" lo-fi as an aesthetic choice, "it sounds like ass so it must be authentic!" (as opposed to, say, early GBV where they couldn't afford to make the records sound any better.) but these guys kinda use the grotty recording hiss-noise blast as another instrument, if that makes sense. like the guitar solo toward the end of the first track (Teen Drama), it's not just guitar it's this whole bendy noisy shit-blast. I'm seriously hooked on these guys, all three of their records are great.

dmr, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

but these guys kinda use the grotty recording hiss-noise blast as another instrument
Yes. So, it sounds kinda shitty, but it all sounds exactly like it should. Like, they worked hard to make it sound that shitty. Like the Psychedelic Horseshit record, the fidelity is so low, but the mix is really well defined. You can hear everything very clearly.
The hooks and the lyrics get me every time, I think that they are writing really great songs.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

And I love the little asides at the end of songs like "Little Amps" (Pop Sooonnnnngggg!) and the one where he says "pussy pop!" really quickly at the end, can't remember which song it is.

dmr, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

i liked em live, but in a way they really are a studio band for the reasons dmr sez. the noise is almost orchestrated, hard to reproduce.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

Like the Psychedelic Horseshit record

guess I need to hear this, huh. they get mentioned a lot. I think it's their name that's stopping me. I only caught one song of their set when they opened for TNV in brooklyn.

dmr, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

everyone i know that saw them was really disappointed said they were just like any other indie rock band w/o the production. still i'd like to go see them, love the records.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

I liked em fine, they played loud, they covered Pavement for the encore (Box Elder), what more do ya need

dmr, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I think that if you go into it already a fan, you'll like it just fine. People who don't know what to expect are sometimes disappointed.
I had a great time at their show.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

lots of the people i know that didn't like 'em listen to more noise stuff and just like the records cuz of the whole production/stiltbreeze lineage type stuff...i mean i dig on GBV and they were full on rock live so i'm sure i'll be fine...i think this band sort of straddles the underground-noise/indie divide in a weird way.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

most disconcerting thing for me live was how cute they all were. like a band of arty kids from degrassi high.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

also "relevant:now" shows some drone potential. i predict the next album will be one 17-minute song and 17 one-minute songs.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

(as opposed to, say, early GBV where they couldn't afford to make the records sound any better.)

don't think that's true. the real early gbv records, like sandbox, were recorded in cheap but quite real studios, and they just didn't like the results. so they eventually retreated into their garage with their four-tracks and memory mans for aesthetic reasons -- they preferred the sound they got by themselves. and i would argue that the hiss/noise/buzz/tape-hiccups they got as a result were very much a part of gbv's aesthetic. it wouldn't have cost a lot of money to find another 16-track studio somewhere in ohio in the early '90s.

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

the new TNV records sounds like early superchunk with the treble turned to 10 and the bass turned to zero. i like it.

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

it wouldn't have cost a lot of money to find another 16-track studio somewhere in ohio in the early '90s.

maybe ... but they did jump back to making big studio records as soon as they got on Matador

whereas if anything TNV's records have gotten more fucked-up sounding (in a good way) and they're very consciously going for a 90s lo-fi vibe .... that's all I wuz trying to say really

dmr, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

but they did jump back to making big studio records as soon as they got on Matador TVT

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 17 January 2008 03:14 (seventeen years ago)

but yeah TNV certainly appear to be going for a very conscious lo-fi vibe

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 17 January 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

well of course they are! any idiot with a hundred dollar computer could make a "better" sounding record. but where is the fun in that?

scott seward, Thursday, 17 January 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

love the new one so much. poppier AND grungier. win-win.

strongohulkington, Thursday, 17 January 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

after many times through i still think it doesn't have the hooks-per-minute of paisley reich, but it's got plenty of hooks so i'm not complaining. "another day" is practically wistful.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

I saw No Age & Times New Viking live this week and while I thought No Age weren't up to much, TNV had plenty of tunes.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

New Siltbreeze has been hit and miss for me so far. Can't make up my mind where TNV sit. The sound and the songs are OK, but I find the chicks and dude's vocals a little winsome. I ended up seeing them twice this week, and the second time, I realised during the last song (one of the first album tracks) that is was basically Roadrunner (twice). Sounded pretty f'kin great right then. And the chick was looking sehr hottt in a Mondrian print skirt thing. Schwing!

gnarly sceptre, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

GOTT PUNCH, you don't even dig the Sapat record? That one stands out for me, in that it's less of a "weird punk" thing and more of a homage to classic Kraut moves.

ian, Friday, 16 May 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

I still haven't heard the Operazione Nafta record, though, and that one's supposed to also be pretty weird. Maybe I will listen to it today.

Sapat was cool, aye.

I think this is my problem with it. It sounds like the crappy recording was done on purpose rather than through necessity.

i'd say that most all low-fi recordings of the last 20+ years have been done on purpose and not out of necessity

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 May 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

it's pretty fun to note how the early tnv records were all produced by mike rep, who is kind of king of lofi rock n roll in my mind.

ian, Friday, 16 May 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

was their matador record self-recorded or lovingly fucked with?

ian, Friday, 16 May 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

"chirpy"? I don't get that at all from them. they rock pretty hard live, where fideliry's less of an issue. yeah they're "catchy" but that's what makes it worth the effort to push through the static, they've got good tunes. (and after a while the static becomes part of the appeal.) they hit the same spot as GBV / early Pavement, for me.

ok, well, haven't heard that one. and pink reason was good. so maybe i was a little too hardline there. maybe i'm becoming a siltbreeze reactionary and i only wanna hear "phaser like a block of salt" or operation of the sonne over and over.

LIVIN' IN A JAM SPREAD (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 12 October 2009 14:12 (sixteen years ago)

I've barely heard anything about the new disc. It was so quietly-released that, at first, I thought it was a collection of b-sides or early singles.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 12 October 2009 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

i like it pretty well, tho i admit after a few cursory listens i haven't gone back for more detailed appreciation. i definitely feel my enthusiasm waning, but i don't know if that reflects actual fall-off or just, they're kind of still doing the same thing and it's not as much fun the 4th times.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Monday, 12 October 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

yeah it's decent and i'm not upset about buying it but when i really want to listen to them i'd always go back to the first two records.

they should slow their output a bit cause i'm thinking some of the songs on the last two really shouldn't have made it through quality control.

don't blame pitchfork, blame america (call all destroyer), Monday, 12 October 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

Listened to the 7" EP that accompanied the new one, but wasn't impressed enough to buy it or the album. Will try again, but it all felt kinda redundant and none of the tunes stuck with me on the first pass (in sharp contrast to the 1st LP and Paisley Reich). If they want to tread water with the sound, they've got to keep upping their game, songwriting-wise, and I don't think they're doing that.

I just think that they write some of the smartest and funniest songs. Can't wait to pick this one up.

Trip Maker, Monday, 2 May 2011 14:03 (fourteen years ago)

have almost picked this up twice in the last week or so. i do like TNV and loved "no room to live" when it dropped last year as a single. it's a lovely song and exactly the right direction for the band. otoh, i'd all but given up on them prior to that. still on board with dig yourself and paisley reich, but they subsequently fell into something of a rut, imo. while the basic sound remained the same (never my favorite thing about the band), the tunes that lived long enough to make their way through the hiss weren't doing it for me.

mixed reviews or not, i will eventually buy a copy. for whatever reason, i'm in their corner. i want to like what they do, and to see them do well.
