Aftermath (the Brit version). Cause it won't come close to winning, but is as good (or better) than any of the others.

JN$OT, Saturday, 21 April 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

Disclaimer: If there is a poll already, than I am sorry as I couldn't find it...delete thread...but if not then please vote.

Used "favorite" to mix it up a little bit.

Bee OK, Saturday, 21 April 2007 08:21 (eighteen years ago)

The hardest decision of them all--would be happy with five or six different picks (all but one of them from the '60s). Went with Aftermath because it's a perfect bridge between their early '60s and later '60s stuff and also because I don't think there's a single song on it I dislike (but is there really a different British version?).

sw00ds, Saturday, 21 April 2007 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

14 track Brit version as opposed to the 11 track American one. The US version also adds "Paint it Black", which is missing from the Brit version. Different covers, too.

JN$OT, Saturday, 21 April 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, ok, just checked the tracklisting. I do prefer the US version, mostly because it's what I'm familiar with, of course, but I don't really like the idea of ending the album with "what to do," which I always assumed was a much earlier song (I think I only know it from the second Hot Rocks collection), and doesn't sound to me like it would fit in at all, but maybe I'm wrong. "Going Home" makes much more sense as an album closer--I like it, but I also like having the option of not bothering with it, given that it's 11 minutes. Also prefer the US cover.

sw00ds, Saturday, 21 April 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the US cover is better.

JN$OT, Saturday, 21 April 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

About time we get to vote for all of them. My vote for "Their Satanic Majesties...." is kind of original, although I know I have several ILM'ers with me in my pick. :)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 21 April 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

I vote for Around and Around, which is an incredible German import compilation from '65 or thereabouts.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 22 April 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

xpost

Geir, I always thought Satanic Majesties was regarded as a failed attempt at psych?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 22 April 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

That was like the big consensus perspective on it in the '70s, wasn't it? It's interesting - seems to allude to the idea that the Stones were faking it (though it's actually quite a serious album) and/or that they had lost their true selves.

Tim Ellison, Sunday, 22 April 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'd probably vote for it, too - not that it's their best compositionally or that their playing is best on it, but I just like it best.

Tim Ellison, Sunday, 22 April 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe my speakers are mussed, but the highs in the first tune were always too shrill for me to get past it.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 22 April 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Exile, natch. Fatigue is THE great rock and roll subject.

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 22 April 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

However flawed TSMR may be, it's a plenty honorable choice. They were hard to beat back then.

Mark G, Monday, 23 April 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

The Rolling Stones have TOO MANY ALBUMS

I know, right?, Monday, 23 April 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Geir, I always thought Satanic Majesties was regarded as a failed attempt at psych?

A nice enough attempt for my taste, although "Sgt. Pepper" was of course better. But even a failed psych album is better than a great rock'n'roll album, hence my vote.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 23 April 2007 08:11 (eighteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure from memory that i voted for beggars banquet. at least i hope so. i just tried to vote, only to be informed that i'd already voted. if you'd caught me in a particular frame of mind i could have very well gone with sticky fingers

Charlie Howard, Monday, 23 April 2007 08:14 (eighteen years ago)

Between The Buttons (UK version) (just beats Aftermath and Exile)

Dr.C, Monday, 23 April 2007 08:51 (eighteen years ago)

Mark G, Monday, 23 April 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Let It Bleed by a country mile, although I'm starting to really appreciate Flowers and Between the Buttons.

ha, i voted for satanic majesties. sentimental favorite.

get bent, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Man, I just do not get the Satanic Majesties love at all. It just sounds to me like an interesting curio with a few good song ideas scattered about. Definitely at the very bottom of the '60s Stones album for me (the only one I would say I don't care much for).

sw00ds, Monday, 23 April 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

i agree w/swoods. love 10,000 light years though

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Beggars has "Dear Doctor" and Let It Bleed has "Country Honk" - too close to call.

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 09:08 (eighteen years ago)

Regarding "Their Majesties..." I guess it's a bit like "The Elder", "The White Album"/"Let It Be" and some other in that it isn't a typical choice that actual fans of the band would pick, as it is kind of stylistically "atypical".

But here, there are non-fans voting too.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 09:10 (eighteen years ago)

Mmm, like the PFloyd poll then.

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Piper" was a very typical Pink Floyd album in 1967. :)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

I fully expect to be the only person to vote for Black and Blue - but it's one of my favourite albums of all time, and I'm not even a massive Stones fan.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

Regarding "Their Majesties..." I guess it's a bit like "The Elder", "The White Album"/"Let It Be" and some other in that it isn't a typical choice that actual fans of the band would pick, as it is kind of stylistically "atypical".

Right - thanks for letting me know I'm not an "actual fan" of my all-time favourite band. "The White Album"/"Let It Be" is such a dumb way-off comparison.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

But then, your love of Satanic Majesties makes sense (not speaking to other people here, only Geir) given that they more or less excised that terrible r&b noise for that album.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I love "Their Satanic Majesties..." for the fact that it sounds more like Beatles than Stones. :)

(Then, part of "Let It Be" and "The White Album" sound more like Stones than Beatles)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

Whatever.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

Er, WHATEVER.

sw00ds, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

I never liked their "ah let's crank up the blooze one more time" style, so OK I'm a "SatMaj" fan.

I'm on a bit of a Stones trawl at the moment, getting some jolly nice orig albums and/or the jap LP facsimiles.

Let It Bleed is a bit rub, but a bit fine too.

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

First, sorry as I made this poll due date way too long.

Since I do have time, however, I'm going to pull out three that I think deserve it and give them a spin. Exile on Main Street, unbelievably, didn't make that cut.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

last day to vote

Bee OK, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for exile then logged in under a different name and voted for sticky fingers

ghost rider, Monday, 30 April 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

Is that what I need to do in order to vote for Dirty Work multiple times?q

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 30 April 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

not sure what time zone this thing is on but results will happen sometime today.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

Not sure what time zone you're on but here, it says "Poll ends June 01"

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

it should read "May 1"

Bee OK, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

But it doesn't!

Satanic has some of my all time favorite Stones songs on it, but is too uneven... Between Beggars, Bleed and Exile for me... I'll probably just pick one at random.

I eat cannibals, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

damn can we fix that and close this poll today?

Bee OK, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

can we please close this poll? June 1 was a mistake and I want to know what wins, please!

Bee OK, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Let's revive this one on odd occasions. Until June 1.

Mark G, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

I would now change my vote to Beggars Banquet, which I've been listening to again and love every second of except maybe "Sympathy for the Devil" (which I don't not love, it's just...I don't know, kind of hard to take sometimes).

sw00ds, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

What does "rub" mean?

Why is "Get your Ya Yas...." on there but "Love You Live" isn't?

Bill Magill, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

rub=rubbish, if it was me saying it.

Mark G, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 17 May 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Let it bleed, because all of the tracks easily pass muster, and some go above and beyond the call of duty (let it bleed, rambler, you can't always get...)

whatever, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

i just now saw this thread so i'm glad the poll was extra long. i went with my first instinct, which was aftermath. good to see other love for it. (and i prefer the us version too.)

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

I've always been partial to the "outtakes" album of "Sticky Fingers"; is this crazy?

MC, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Christ, still one week to go!?

JN$OT, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 08:27 (eighteen years ago)

Never saw this one (not that I vote on a lot of these polls). I'd like to give some props to December's Children and Out of Our Heads - both excellent energy boosters. Beggars is an all time fave but I think I love Sticky Fingers more.

willem, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 08:45 (eighteen years ago)

sticky fingers, for 'moonlight mile' and more.

stevie, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 10:48 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure the code just let me vote a second time in this poll. Exile a couple of weeks ago, The Rolling Stones Now! this time.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

As it would happen, i just finished compiling a personal MP3 compilation covering their discography through the mid 80s. In assembling the mix, i pulled in various outtakes and singles (and b-sides) and buried them into the most appropriate album folder so some of those albums are artificially bloated, but still, representative of the era. The winnowing process took a few days but finally resulted in about 6 hours of music that fit onto a single CDR.

Looking over the tracklist today, i see a suprisingly healthy dose from 1964's 12 x 5, both 1965's ...Now & Out Of Our Minds, 1976's Black and Blue and, of all things, 1983's Tattoo You. The most fertile ground comes from 1965 where no less than three albums-worth of material amply covers their most defining period. At the end of the day, however, i can't help but nod to the refinement found in 1968 and 1969 (Let It Bleed) with my final vote going to Beggars Banquet (which is represented by numerous alternate, live, and various heretofore "lost" tracks -- but damn, how could two separate versions of "Memo to Turner" ever be wrong???).

christoff, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

this thing will finally close tomorrow.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think I accidentally voted twice in a poll before, but I was drunk so I kept my mouth shut 'cause sometimes I don't remember too good, see? I'm also darn sure that I've voted in this poll before and was just now able to cast another vote (for Exile, if we're keeping count).

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 31 May 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

I never felt like the Stones were a very good 'album band'... but I'm going to go with Satanic Majesty, which I think is the most consistent and a hugely underrated album. This one needs a critical re-evaluation.

Richard Wood Johnson, Thursday, 31 May 2007 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

Awesome, I just voted a third time! Whatever the code problem is, I'm all for this ballot-box stuffing.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Out Of Our Heads, since I played that one last, and quite enjoyed it.

Between The Buttons (UK). I don't expect it to win.

Fess up, Alfred, all those Dirty Work votes were from you, no?

JN$OT, Friday, 1 June 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

I think Stan maj is better than Let it bleed.

I could say it's because SMR is less cynical, more psyche and less crummy blues, but then it's MY FAVOURITE not necessarily about which one's the best.

Do a "best" poll, everyone'd vote "exile" probably.

Mark G, Friday, 1 June 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

I don't find "Let It Bleed" particularly good, but it's way better than "Exile". If there is one album in the traditional canon that is underrated in this poll, then I would say "Beggar's Banquet" is the one. I mean, it contains "Sympathy For The Devil", "Street Fighting Man" and "No Expectations". Nuff said.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 07:52 (eighteen years ago)

BB is seventh, that's hardly 'under-rated' considering how many there are here.

Mark G, Friday, 1 June 2007 08:27 (eighteen years ago)

BB is obviously a lot better than "Goat's Head Soup". Plus I would say it is better than all of their "classic" 1969-72 albums too.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 June 2007 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

There's contrarian votes all over ILX, so why all the fuss on this thread?

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 1 June 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

i want people to explain why they voted Goats Head Soup. grated i love this album but it not even remotely close to their best. these poll results are strange even for ILM. how the hell does Bridges to Babylon or A Bigger Bang even get one vote? but than i love the fact that Some Girls got five votes.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 June 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the Goats Head Soup fiends should out/explain themselves.

JN$OT, Saturday, 2 June 2007 05:59 (eighteen years ago)

"A Bigger Bang" was considered sort of a "return to form", but granted I'd expect those who named it so to still vote for something from the late 60s or early 70s.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 2 June 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

I can see with some of the 60s psych fans on this board that Their Satanic Majesties Request would get some votes, but not that many and Beggars Banquet being that low is really surprising. I think "No Expectations" is the best song that Jagger and Richards ever wrote.

Kind of an odd choice for Wyman to join them on; he didn't even play on the studio recording.

Bridges to Babylon and A Bigger Bang got a vote

!

Shin Oliva Suzuki, Monday, 26 November 2012 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, can't believe those two got votes and Tattoo You got none.

Nate Carson, Monday, 26 November 2012 03:58 (thirteen years ago)

would've voted for 'the rolling stones' (which isn't the same album as 'england's newest hitmakers'), which is the one i listen to most these days.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 26 November 2012 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

Dirty Work getting more votes than Some Girls or Flowers is one of those "only on ILM" things.

soto got socks

buzza, Monday, 26 November 2012 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

Just noticing how many "BB" album titles they had: BB, BtheB, B&B, BtoB and aBB.

Too bad they were beaten to Blonde on Blonde, Back in Black or Beaucoups of Blues.

Faster than food (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 26 November 2012 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 26 November 2012 17:35 (thirteen years ago)

They ended their concert with Cherry Oh Baby? What an odd choice

Panaïs Pnin (The Yellow Kid), Monday, 26 November 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

that was my mistake, Yellow Kid. That was playing on the PA as people filed out!

Iago Galdston, Monday, 26 November 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

I guess Street Fighting Man is a little too risky to play these days, lol

I dunno if this is the thread for it but I finally saw Crossfire Hurricane and while the interview content isn't necessarily anything new, goddamn I loved some of that footage (no not just naked mick bending over in front of the camera O_O). also cool to get more horse's mouth stuff from Taylor, even if it's stuff I already knew.

Well done. Interesting that Goat’s Head Soup escaped Meh status. I like it but I understand it has its share of detractors.

Let them eat Pfifferlinge an Schneckensauce (Tom D.), Sunday, 6 October 2019 12:37 (six years ago)

Just noticed that the title, like that of Finnegans Wake, contains no apostrophe, sorry.

I disliked Goats Head Soupp for years thanks to that pustule called "Angie," but I saved it for the sake of "Winter," "Coming Round Again," and "100 Years Ago."
