I'm listening to it right now and it seems to be one of the most gorgeous things ever. What do you think?

Love it. Can't be doing with the Candi Statton mashup tho.

Is ocean wet?
Is the sky blue?
Does the sun rise in the east?
Do you even have to ask?

PS Waiting for My Angel is even more dope because it isn't 117bpm.

"your love" is by jamie principle, not frankie knuckles

Eisbaer, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

i kinda like Inner City's 'Your Love'. probably the most 'commercial' sounding thing Kev S ever did if you know what i mean.

blueski, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

the beatles - a pretty good rock band?

deej, Monday, 30 April 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

did anyone hear his recent essential mix?

tricky, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

also by Jamie Principal...Bad Boy. And It's a Cold World. Through the version of Bad Boy on the flip of the Trax Baby Wants to Ride 12" sounds different then the Jamie Pricipal 12"

In any case, all these songs are totally classic and they're all pretty much Jamie Principal so his name should be in the thread title!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone in the history of the world who cares about house music think this song is a dud?

richjuz, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

It is a weird record.

It is super slow(117bpm vs most 1st wave chicago stuff which is 120-125, and acid is usually 125-135) and has an overly long dramatic intro. I think it is a great record, but it doesn't necessarily translate to non-heads when you play it in public. Although it has a strong historical profile in the dance cannon, it isn't instantly anthemic on a floor like a Big Fun or a Good Life. I don't know whether this is due to an inherent lack of populist funk or just that it is more obscure than the inner city records.

It fits in nicely when you want to go from 110-115bpm viking disco/nu-disco/whatever or slower italo into the early Chi records. It is tough to play that slow in a dance context.

Display Name, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

"Your Love" by Frankie Knuckles AND Jamie Principle, according to my copy of the History Of House 2CD compilation, is a great record. Mainly because it sounds like the road Simple Minds should have travelled instead of all that "Belfast Child" bluster.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 07:08 (eighteen years ago)

Have never danced to it.

blueski, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

But then I've never heard it out. 'You Got The Love' got played at a party I was at a few months back but I tend to find it too sparse and melancholy to get into as a floor tune, lovely tho it is in both that and it's original form.

blueski, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

just finished reading 'last night a dj saved my life'; apparently the original demo version of this was played from tape in chicago for a year or more before the vinyl version was recorded (which was produced by knuckles, hence the confusion).

i like the anecdote that this and 'on and on' by jesse saunders were the two seminal chi-house trax - 'your love' because it was so good (but everyone thought it was too good to be from chicago), 'on and on' because it was shitty enough that everyone knew it was from chicago and thought they could do better!

haitch, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

Your Love by Jamie Prinicpal came out on another label I think before the Trax version and isn't credited to Knuckles, but you never hear about that.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really care/know about house music, but I love this song. I think it's actually probably MORE accessible than a lot of house music, it sounds like Joy Division or something.

n/a, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

you could mix it with 'Thieves Like Us' maybe

i really like frankie knuckles (he invented the classic no matter when you play it...it works all the time forever song) but i think that song sounds really dated and raw. it has good things about it though. so i would not call it a dud. but i wouldn't buy it.

is the x-vectors track that old? i thought it only came out a few months back. (it is great, tho.)

haitch, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the X-Vectors track's pretty old - got the 7" from the UK ages ago; was a bit too Interpol for what I was hoping. K-similar to that Friendly Fires cover - X-Vectors are better with the chorus, Friendly Fires with the verses. A draw!

Original + "Baby Wants To Ride" + "Tears" = my favourite three-single clump EVAH.

etc, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

doesn't one of the guys from Friendly Fires post here?

Ronan, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

X-Vectors is funny in a "oh, trendy band covers house classic" way but nothing more. Anyone who thinks it's better is either being funny or clueless.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

uh, better that the friendly fires cover not better than the original.

jed_, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

yeah one of friendly fires is jack or drip drop drab fame. hope he doesn't mind me saying that. i think he posts more on dissensus though.

what do people think of principle's "date w/the rain"? i'm kinda torn. vocal version kinda not my fave.

(just found it's an eddie kendricks song! did not remember that. like that version so much more.)

like totally gr80 to the max (jaxon), Saturday, 25 July 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

i like both the Persona version and Trax versions of "Real Love", they're both dope. i like the unreleased version of "Bad Boy" that Hardy played. "Cold World" is in my record box right now.

also, my favorite version of "Date With The Rain" is Dimitri from Paris' re-edit of the Kendricks version. amazing shit.

pipecock, Sunday, 26 July 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

"your love" is totally classic!

first i got this ep, but the side with "your love" was pressed off-center and the song sounds wobbly. i bought another copy and it had the same problem. the other side plays fine on both.

then i bought the 12" on persona, which is the original version without frankie knuckles, and was a little disappointed. i prefer the knuckles version.

jamie principle's "date with the rain" was pretty bad as i remember it. the eddie kendricks original is awesome. don't think i've heard the dmitri edit, but there's a good "Special Remix Disco Version" on here.

one time, Sunday, 26 July 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

That 12" you linked to is the Dimitri mix. That version of "Down To Love Town" is awesome too, I just played that out the other night.

What don't you like about the Persona version? I prefer it to the Traxx but not by much. I also like the bootleg "You Got The Love" with the Traxx version under the vox a bit more than the still dope original version.

pipecock, Sunday, 26 July 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

one time, my copy of ultimate production has the same problem. i suspect it's a bootleg since it was only $10.

but when you're looking for pleasure it's me you want to meat.

Spinspin Sugah, Sunday, 26 July 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

i don't like the intro on the persona version. i guess it's because i'm used to hearing the frankie knuckles mix. just a personal preference though, they're both great.

i should have known that was the dmitri edit. i don't have that record myself, my dj partner plays it.

one time, Sunday, 26 July 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

picked up a 'frankie knuckles presents' trax vinyl comp with this on it today and i am stoked

psychgawsple, Monday, 27 July 2009 05:16 (sixteen years ago)

'cold world' is awesome. seems a bit unjustly underrated/forgotten compared to 'your love' and 'baby wants to ride'.

^^ Both of these are simply fabulous.

Tim F, Monday, 27 July 2009 12:01 (sixteen years ago)

recently picked up Impedance's Tainted Love 12" having always loved the version on the Trevor Jackson DJ Kicks, and discovered one of the mixes on the b-side is a total rip-off/pastiche/hommage to Your Love, basically a Your Love soundalike but with the lyrics to Tainted Love. Really cool.

dan selzer, Monday, 27 July 2009 13:36 (sixteen years ago)

there's so many versions of "bad boy" and all of them are great. my favourite jamie principle song is "you're all i've waited for"!

My favourite Frankie Knuckles story is the one he told about his remix of Blind during his RBMA Lecture
"I really wasn’t into doing it. But I thought I’d just knock it out, so I did. Then I was on the road and gone for a couple of months. Then I landed in Greece and was playing a club in Athens and someone came up and asked me to play it. I was surprised, I didn’t think anything about the song. I just did it, gave them the song and then I left. I asked him: “How do you know about it?” “It’s everywhere, everybody’s into it.” And I had no idea. This is how things happen. You can work on a piece of music and the minute it’s out of your hands it’s out in the universe and all of a sudden someone will sneak up on you and ask you to play it. And you have no idea that it’s there. The minute I put it on the whole room erupted. I had no idea that people knew what it was."

I only have a casual knowledge of his music, but he's the kind of guy I love talking about with my students--the fact that he's not famous with the general public, but that there will be hundreds and hundreds of musicians they do know Tweeting about him tonight. We've been listening to "The Whistle Song," "Tears," and his "Rock with You" remix--the class is enjoying it.
