***Put Ya Hands Up for the 2006 ILX TRACKS POLL RESULTS***

Nothing says "May" like "previous year in review," amirite?

A total of 315 songs received at least one vote. I'll reveal the vital poll stats at the end. To break ties, I used total number of votes and then highest ranking vote it received. A handful were still tied after that but I just let 'em be after that, I ain't PricewaterhouseCoopers! If you have an actual single cover or otherwise relevant image for a track when I wasn't able to find one, please email ilx2006pollATgmailDOTcom with it.

So, let's do this!

49. Ciara - Promise

There have been plenty of good hit ballads in the past couple years, but none have felt as genuine as "Promise." There's something so amazing about the way Ciara sings here. Rather than trying to asking Polow Da Don to hide her voice, she takes a leading role on the track and coos with real sincerity.

Ok, so "Promise" is not an original track by any means, but for a smooth Ciara single, it's pretty close to perfect. The song itself is pretty simple...It's just a gorgeous beat, complete with some genius vocoder clips, and Ciara, who sounds more powerful here than she ever has.

47. Lil Wayne feat. Robin Thicke - Shooter
(40 points, 2 votes, 2 number ones)

via Youtube

http://ilx2006music.googlepages.com/47.JPG

When I first heard about this single last year, I didn't expect much. I kind of remembered Lil Wayne from a few solo tracks, but he never left much of an impression. I had heard some Robin Thicke tracks (thanks for the lead, Sprite!), and I definitely enjoyed them. I knew he could be smooth and confident, but this concept sounded like a mess; he'd be talking about guns, the streets, etc.? He'd have to be fronting--I mean, Jesus, he's the song of Alan Thicke! How could he put up a tough guy facade while sounding cool and soulful? And how could Lil Wayne impress when he could barely stand out on his solo tracks? Well, after hearing good reports, I decided to give the track a shot, and OH MY GOD. It turned out to be absolutely mindblowing.

Robin Thicke's vocals are smoother than ever. Lil Wayne drops some of the greatest lines of the year. They work together like a bullet and an AK-47. The timing is perfect. Everything-- the horns, the rhymes, the aaaaaahhhhs--climaxes at just the right moment, and by the end, the best track of the year is the only thing still alive.

I'm guessing Tape Store was the other person who put "Shooter" at number 1. Yippee.

There used to be a youtube video of weezy and robin doing "shooter" on Leno, and they complemented each other extremely well - timing, putting their hands up (this seemed to be a theme this year), running around the stage, the brrrrrrrrrrrrr... Sadly it no longer exists.

Production is really annoyingly blarey compared to the rest of the album. Good rapping, despite yawnsome snap music-bashing, but one of the weaker tracks on ScaleFish.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, and the Rocky samples are plenty grating.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 00:03 (seventeen years ago) link

The Leno performance was amazing! Especially the part where Robin sprints from bended-knee to the front of the stage, pushes Lil Wayne to the side and then tears up the bridge.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 00:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Ahmed Fathi is a singer and oudist from Yemen (I think it's Yemen) and I voted for him because Sundar nominated him and I figured, okay, what the heck, lets vote for Ahmed Fathi then. But the track in question is just part of this wonderful collection that resulted from an oud festival:

http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000HT2J94.01._SS400_SCLZZZZZZZ_V59714698_.jpg

It's a good piece though.

(I never expected it to actually make the list. I guess this is the best evidence that this poll needed more participants.)

I guess this is the best evidence that this poll needed more participants.

Not to mention "Shooter"'s low placement! Promise, too!

Tape Store, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 01:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I love "La Tisafir" and it probably is my favourite single track of the year but I don't feel like I know enough about oud music that I'm totally comfortable commenting on it. What knocks me out is the oud-only section beginning around 1:35 which alternates rapid strumming of thick chords with melodic commentary, building in intensity. It reminds me of things I love in some South American classical guitar music as well as in some rock music. This is where I start to feel like a dope but the sonority he hits around 2:10 reminds me of early Sonic Youth and post-Branca no wave in a way, just with more going on in the rhythm and intricate melodies. And then he goes back to the memorable main vocal tune (I want to describe the delivery as 'soulful,' heaven help me, and I feel like a dope again) and gorgeous elaborate rippling melodic commentary.

(Why would it be good if the poll had so many more participants that a track like this would get forgotten?)

Sundar, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I just read that and it seems unsatisfyingly clinical. The track feels yearning, intense, and beautifully intricate.

Sundar, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:14 (seventeen years ago) link

(So will the albums results come after these? I'll have a lot more time to write blurbs next week.)

Sundar, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:15 (seventeen years ago) link

(Why would it be good if the poll had so many more participants that a track like this would get forgotten?)

I guess it's just very unrepresentative of ILM taste in general, but maybe that's not such a bad thing anyway. (Also, I have no idea, and I assume neither do you, how new this song is. It's quite possibly an older song of his. I don't know how 2006 it really is in that sense. Great music, nonetheless.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 03:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll alternate albums and tracks. I did fewer tracks today since I started late in the day, so I'll do a bunch on Thursday. I'll start albums tomorrow morning.

I got their first two albums around the same time and for a week or so I was telling people that "I really like the new album, but there's one song off their first album that I like a lot called 'the knife'"

Besides just basic confusion/incompetence, I think this might be because it sounds just a little bit different from the rest of the record to me, what with the doo wop and all (though it sounds even less like the first album to be sure).

Anyway, if by "thoughts" you meant "pointless anecdotes" . . .

Who would have thought fusing together 80s Queen, Ennio Morricone in his spaghetti Western mode, and surf rock guitar would have produced one of the most jaw-dropping rock singles in years? Muse, apparently. It's probably best experienced with the crazy futuristic western video, but the song conjures up enough imagery and grandeur on its own even without visual accompaniment. Don't waste your time, or time will waste you.

37. Marit Larsen - Don't Save Me
(47.5 points, 3 votes, 1 number one)

via Youtube

http://ilx2006music.googlepages.com/dontsaveme.jpg

And... ta da!... the first single from the forthcoming MARIT LARSEN album is now out in Norway, and the video is streamed on her Website. And I don't immediately have the words to describe it, really. It's cute and fun, probably more cute than anything we've talked about yet on this thread. But it's not teenpop. It's... I don't know... pop carnival young woman cabaret? Jingle? The song is called "Don't Save Me" and the words seem to be about ending a relationship, but the mood isn't "I'll break you" but rather "I'll wash that relationship right out of my hair." I like it. Maybe a lot.
-Frank Kogan

"Don't Save Me" is awesome and I'd put it all on Marit's shoulders. The way she sings it, phrases it - I'm willing to contemplate the possibility that "Don't turn the truth around/It reads the same way upside down" isn't the greatest lyric ever, but the way she sort of... there's not a word for it, but if there was it'd be in between snarl and smirk and snigger and sneer - the way she does that anyway, her voice gets redoubled for the punchline - fuckin' awesome. "House! Of! Cards!" And the way she lets "Don't you dare" out of her mouth, the last little "r" sound, I swear that when I sing along to that it makes the taste buds on the tongue ripple apart like velcro hooks gently unlacing themselves... it's rather bloody remarkable, really.

There's wasn't enough consensus to do worst of for albums, but enough for a few tracks.

In no particular order:

Fergie - London Bridge

link via Youtube

http://ilx2006music.googlepages.com/londonbridge.jpg

The production isn't terrible; it's actually quite fun, if a bit trite. But what makes "London Bridge" so terrible is pee-stained Fergie, who tries sooooo hard and fails soooooo horribly. While the Gwen Stefani imitation is frustrating, I must admit that the background vocalists are ace; it's as if they're knowingly answering the question, "What is this?"
-Tape Store

(since the video is edited, my ending sentence doesn't make sense (instead of 'oh snap,' it's 'oh, shit'))

Tape Store, Sunday, 6 May 2007 22:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I gave "London Bridge" my #2 spot and it deserves considerable acclaim IMO. I definitely hated on it on first listen (see the "check out the new MIA single" thread) but it grew on me rapidly. We've certainly heard songs by talentless lushes before, but I've never heard a song that so captured the experience of being a talentless lush - "London Bridge" perfectly captures the confidence, moodiness, and impenetrable certainty in one's own rightness that we've all seen in the faces of a thousand people at clubs yelling in cell phones that they're totally wasted and wish they didn't wear these shoes. There's something completely pure in the performance - possibly something quite unintentional, as the stabs at legitimate sex symbolism elsewhere in her career would suggest. But Fergie is much more "pissed jeans" than she is "Glamorous", and "London Bridge" seems to suggest that, hell, that's enough for a Thursday night on the town. Magnificent.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I had the exact same experience with London Bridge as I did with Rudebox:

-hated it on first listen (really, really, really hated)

An italo-disco Annie is so obviously what the world has always needed that it amazes me no one has thought of it before. The single, I'll Be By Your Side is on Bigstereo right now, and it's been a long time since I've loved a song this much on first listening.

If it does sound like Annie (yeah, it's a lazy comparison), it's the wistful Annie of Heartbeat or My Best Friend. But the backing is proper italo, straight out of 1983, no question.

If there's one thing "Roscoe" doesn't seem to be, it's straightforward. The vocal turns in this song are consistently slippery and unique. More so than on the rest of the album. Probably the most memorable phrasing I've heard this year comes from this song: "Whenever I was I child I wondered what if my name had changed into something more productive like Roscoe, been born in 1891, waiting with my aunt Rosaline". That line repeats in my head for days. And I like it.

I heart the Gossip, but despite my best efforts, I just could never quite get into the song "Standing In The Way Of Control." There was something herky-jerky about it, or just not hooky enough. Felt like a huge departure from their sound without really getting anywhere.

More importantly, it came out in 2005, so I call DISQUALIFIED.

22. Ciara - Promise
(62 points, 5 votes, 1 number one)

via Youtube

http://ilx2006music.googlepages.com/49.JPG

There have been plenty of good hit ballads in the past couple years, but none have felt as genuine as "Promise." There's something so amazing about the way Ciara sings here. Rather than trying to asking Polow Da Don to hide her voice, she takes a leading role on the track and coos with real sincerity.

Ok, so "Promise" is not an original track by any means, but for a smooth Ciara single, it's pretty close to perfect. The song itself is pretty simple...It's just a gorgeous beat, complete with some genius vocoder clips, and Ciara, who sounds more powerful here than she ever has.
-Tape Store

A curveball, at first: what's this, the thin-voiced Princess of Crunk leading her second album off with an opulent ballad? 'Promise' was an ambitious undertaking triumphantly executed: there was its epic structure (two intros! two middle eights, one of them spoken word!), there were the sumptuous layers of multi-tracked voices, the wonderfully tactile drum pads, the soft gasps of breaths used as extra percussion, the echoing longing of the vocodered backing vocals, the devotional romance of the lyrics (with added reference to the sources: you can be my Prince, my Knight indeed) - and above all, there was Ciara, replete with emotion, singing her heart out. And, even better, the video was a dancing video! By my count, this is the third of Ciara's singles which is a genius pinnacle of human achievement: a record which brooks no argument as to who, exactly, is the greatest pop star in the world right now.

I am a muse fan and I am not in the closet about it. I have a lot of goodwill towards them left over from my days when I only listened to indie. And they deserve all of it. Black Holes And Revelations was a great step forward for them and they went even more over the top - The massive opening track about burning in hell sets the pace for what is a hypnotic, crazy, yet compulsively danceable and singalongable album. And I am glad I have some common ground with the metalists.

danzig, Thursday, 10 May 2007 06:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, I'm a little surprised by "Roscoe"'s low placing. Everyone here seems to be praising it to the high heavens. Deservedly so.

blueski, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

As should be readily apparent, I am a Muse fan. Mostly/entirely due to Knights of Cydonia, in fact. And I like to head bang because I can't dance, nor do I have much interest in it. Speed, aggression, and an incredibly catchy chorus do more for me than a groovy beat or whatever you kids call it.

the best track is the ballad "Irreplacable" - by far. I think it must be the most emotionally affecting thing she's done, the chorus is amazing:

You must not know bout me
You must not know bout me
I could have another you in a minute
Matter fact he'll be here in a minute

You must not know bout me
You must not know bout me
I could have another you by tomorrow
So don't you ever for a moment
Get to thinking you're irreplacable

Okay so that probably doesn't convey it's brilliance. But the way she performs it, it's total stiff upper lip, lump in yr throat heroic fronting - Beyonce riding off into the sunset, a tear still drying on her cheek.
-Tim Finney

i love "to the left, to the left... everything you own in the box to the left" so much as well - the way you think it's a dance before the hit comes, or how it's like beyonce forcing herself on her hampered march forward.

(...without the er other right leg she was standing on aka the boyfriend! altho haha that would be walking around in a circle, forget i said anything)

it's at once vulnerable as it is resolute, basically, and it kills.

(74.5 points, 5 votes)

via Youtube

http://ilx2006music.googlepages.com/meandu.jpg

Cassie's voice might be thin, but it's also hard to get out of your head. I've never been to a dance club, but I always picture Cassie being that girl who makes eye contact with you from across the dancefloor. You know? The one who comes over in the middle of "No Diggity" and whispers sweet, seductive phrases in your ear? She's just so addictive and irresistible. And along with this mostly simplistic beat, she's hypnotic.

Because the song is so shy, whenever it wants to climax--whenever Cassie wants to take it to the hotel room, if you will--it's ridiculously effective. And you're left wanting more.

...
i shd add that i really like how promiscuous girl keeps the slightly mystical 'world music' rocks & hills vibe of that annoying worthy album that nelly did last time, just enough that it sez 'THIS IS NELLY' but leaves out 'and check out how wholesome i am', and then those synths in the chorus are so melancholy, its so much more of a love song than a promiscuity song.

If the rest of the Lily Allen tracks lived up to "LDN" I'd be her #1 fan. "Smile" was great the first time and tarnished fast, but "LDN" will be stuck in my head when I'm forty and I won't mind a bit. The "Steal My Sunshine" of 2006.

It's all about the rise and fall of that mammoth synth riff, swaggering lazily along and steamrolling everything in its path without even trying; the rise and fall of TI's unmistakeable flow, those irresistible Georgia inflections alternately tough, amused, silly, deadly serious, and at every point just too damn good to bother with such minor concerns as pausing to breathe; the rise and fall of your feet in time to the beat, convinced for four minutes that they're the feet of a king who owns the whole neighbourhood, just as the supreme 'What You Know' owned 2006. So confidence-instilling that it should be prescribed to neurotics, this is the sound of total triumph.

Search: musically
Destroy: the voters

I mean, seriously - "Crazy"? I realize that in a poll like this you're torn between rating a song based on its initial impact and rating it based on a few months of hindsight, but I tend towards the "hindsight" camp myself and in hindsight "Crazy" is really annoying and thin. Actually, wait. I thought that in the first place. I thought it was overplayed the second time I heard it at the disco, but even on the twentieth such occasion there were throngs of people gleefully exclaiming when they heard that familiar repetitious whomp. I don't really know what else to compare the thing to except some malodorous cross between "Flat Beat" and "Connected" except with a guy doing some sort of keening-mewling atonal crap on top. GUYS. THIS SONG IS ANNOYING. AUGH.

47. Lil Wayne feat. Robin Thicke - Shooter
(40 points, 2 votes, 2 number ones)

I think it is significant that "Shooter" wins in the enthusiasm/passion stakes - average points = perfect 20. And it placed pretty low because not many people had heard of it.

danzig, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, shocking that "Maneater," "SOS," "Pull Shapes" and Escort's "Starlight" are missing from here.

Disappointing that other than the Ahmad Fathi wtf, there are no non-English language tracks. Calle 13 people! You all should go and seek out Snook.

Ain't that special. . .

I don't know why I voted for that Christine Aguilera song--I guess it was for the beats. Otherwise, my picks are a list of strategic, absurdist-strategic, and from the heart voting. I probably don't think "Don't Save Me" was the best song from last year, but I wanted it to make a respectable showing, and I do think it's very good.

I'm not one who loves tons of songs each year, so my list is only the ones I wouldn't want to be without. Lot's of other stuff I enjoy hearing on mixes or on the radio, but wouldn't particularly miss if they weren't around.

1.Lupe Fiasco - Kick, Push
2.Turbulence - Notorious*
3.Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control
4.Marit Larsen - Don't Save Me
5.Muse - Knights of Cydonia
6.Coup - We Are The Ones

* I know it was out earlier in Jamaica (2005?), but became widely available last year which was when I was able to get a copy.

Beyonce's "Ring The Alarm" was my pick for worst single. If it had been a remake of the Tenor Saw song instead of poorly done histrionics things might have been different.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't imagine not being able to fill the songs list. There have to be another 20-50 songs I'm really pissed I couldn't include.

I hated "Ring the Alarm" at first too. You have to listen to it really LOUD for it to make sense.

The Reverend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Can I mention how much I despise "Young Folks"? Yeah, the drumbeat is good, but it's a pure garden variety funk beat. Then I get to thinking that the whistle hook is the most anoying thing ever. But then come the most snively indie boy vocals in the world. Is the girl going to be better? No. She's just as bad, if not worse. And the video confirms my suspicions that everyone involved has Downs Sydrome.

The Reverend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:02 (seventeen years ago) link

the reverend dollarstore on 'young folks'; i don't think i voted for a worst song but if i had it would have been that twee retarded piece of shit. and i haven't even seen the video, i'll file that under DO NOT WANT.

lex pretend, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I should play that "Ring The Alarm" really loud (the Tenor Saw song, no problem)? It find it rather grating at low volumes, and can't really picture it getting better louder.

I could have filled my list with other songs I liked, but those were just the ones I truly loved. I find myself obsessing over a smaller selection of things after sampling the great hordes of stuff, and it is that small selection I want to recognize for lists like this.

I also like to impose silly rules; in this case, no singles off albums if I really like more than one track, thus no T.I. or Nelly Furtado.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm agreeing with Lex and The Reverend here - "Young Folks" doesn't coalesce into anything I want to hear. "Amsterdam", on the other hand, totally works for me, though I can't explain why.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Tape Store, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:20 (seventeen years ago) link

And BTW, I hate the TVOTR album except for those two songs, which both are awesome...In general, TVOTR is better in theory than in practice; those ("I Was a Lover" and "Wolf Like Me") are the only two songs where they really live up to my expectations...off that album, at least

Tape Store, Saturday, 12 May 2007 20:22 (seventeen years ago) link
