Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

I have no other information than that, so don't ask.

Presumably Bardo Pond & Windy And Carl will be playing.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

actually...maybe this year

600, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

DO WANT.
Let's assume, also, that there might be some Black Velvet Fuckere's performing?

ian, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

What, where. Just noticed this.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

great news. i hope this happens. the last terrastock was a complete trip

kamerad, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

get bent, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

an excuse to visit Kentucky

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

I was thinking the same thing!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

haha. "an excuse to visit kentucky."

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

I wish...

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

make sure to visit mammoth cave

Edward III, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

Clearly Terrastock should be held IN the cave.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

everybody except ned can stay at my mom's house.

hstencil, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

:-(

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

O_o

David R., Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

Someone please post the details when the first wave of bands is released. Louisville is completely doable for me (~9 hours more or less) but I need to see the lineup before I start taking time off work, etc.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

sorry ned, don't want that hair clogging up the showers, man.

hstencil, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

An understandable concern.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Like I said, I have no other information other than Phil saying "Mark your calendar"

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

OMG

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

ian, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

See you guys there

BLASTOCYST, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yup yup.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

i'm going to bring a tent in case hstencil's mom won't let me in the house. i can camp out in the yard.

ian, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

HSTENCILSTOCK

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I'd be giving anything away by saying that bonnie prince billy, tara jane o'neil and Papa M have been confirmed, but sadly no Slint. I suggested Warmer Milks and Sapat, but dunno...it's not happening for over a year at this point.

And yes, Bardo Pond & Windy and Carl Will be playing. I hope the Spires play again. God I love those ladies.

Lee Jackson, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

How ya doin' Lee. Coming out for Bottling Smoke? And who exactly is organizing this one anyway?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

Lot to live up to, following last year's Rhode Island romp, in my opinion. Those were three of the best days of my life.

Kentucky is beautiful though, and some special things lurk in its shadows. This is going to drive me crazy until it happens--can't wait to see some of you again.

Travis the Stoned, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, just noticed this sez 2008. duh!

hstencil, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, me too.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

four months pass...

^ terrastock info, for whoever's curious ^

kamerad, Saturday, 13 October 2007 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

Oh cool, and with a variety of confirmed names as well:

Kinski
Jack Rose
Damon and Naomi
Paik
Tara Jane O'Neil
Black Forest/Black Sea
Sapat
Windy and Carl
Major Stars
Pelt
Bardo Pond
Sharron Kraus
Mono
Marissa Nadler
Motorpsycho
The Linus Pauling Quartet
The Photographic
United Bible Studies

Lot of usual suspects but some good new names as well!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 October 2007 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

It is very likely that I will go to this!

sleeve, Sunday, 14 October 2007 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

YEAH YOU BETTER

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 14 October 2007 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

for some reason i kept thinking that this was going to happen in early spring as it did last year but i'm glad it's in early summer instead - summer vacation! :D excited

rrrobyn, Sunday, 14 October 2007 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure I wanna make the trip for that lineup

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 14 October 2007 02:51 (seventeen years ago)

Dear Terrastock,

Please coax Kendra Smith out of retirement.

Love,

Sleeve

sleeve, Sunday, 14 October 2007 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure I wanna make the trip for that lineup

that. feels like every other terrastock line-up with maybe a folk act switched out. also: mono! they're totally deadly dull on cd, i bet they KILL live.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 14 October 2007 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

Please coax Kendra Smith out of retirement.

What a great idea! Does anyone know if she actually IS properly in retirement?

Saxby D. Elder, Sunday, 14 October 2007 23:57 (seventeen years ago)

Sweet Jesus, when will Kendra Smith make another album?

sleeve, Monday, 15 October 2007 00:02 (seventeen years ago)

.

beeahord, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

lineup seems so-so at this point, but I have many friends in Louisville and Bloomington that I need to visit so I am probably still going.

I notice that the new issue of Ptolemaic Terrascope (which I still haven't seen/heard) has a Kendra Smith track, so I will remind the lurker pool once again that she would be a superb addition (her last known public performance was Terrastock '98).

sleeve, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

woo a new PT mag! and kendra! yeahh

electricsound, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 05:48 (seventeen years ago)

Please remember, the line-up's unfolding all the time. It's pretty obvious that all the "familiar faces" are going to confirm first - a lot of them are friends, and we're all in regular contact with one another. For what it's worth, Wooden Shjips have just confirmed too. Lots more to follow.

Phil, Monday, 5 November 2007 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

in an alternate universe I might be in the same place at almost the same time

gabbneb, Monday, 5 November 2007 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

just got the new PT mag, looks good! Kendra tune is a live KCRW version of 'Temporarily Lucy".

Wooden Shjips = more incentive for me to go, I'm like 95% committed at this point.

sleeve, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

Louisville is really not that far from Missouri.
That is a very sweet lineup, I'm really glad to see Oneida and Pelt both in there. I should do this.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 31 January 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

PANTALEIMON!!!!!

I need to buy my plane tickets.

sleeve, Thursday, 31 January 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

Antietam

^^^ weird & out of place, no?

ian, Thursday, 31 January 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

auld

gabbneb, Thursday, 31 January 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

Is the Mag Bar? still trading? Porbably rejected by the Louisville hipsters? Had a great day -and night- there in 2002.

Some very welcoming boozer types in there with a great jukebox - sadly left to see Lucero at some very incongruous posh hotel type establishment. It became very hazy.

Fer Ark, Thursday, 31 January 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

Alas, I won't be there

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 1 February 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

No Pearls Before Swine this year, boo! Not that I could've attended anyway, am a few thousand miles too far away, sadly.

stareyedsquirrel, Saturday, 2 February 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)

No Ghost, either. I think Bardo is the only one on that list to have played ALL terrastocks, right? I would LIKE to go, don't know if I can make it come together. How much would it take to get Sapat to play some shows in the northeast?

ian, Saturday, 2 February 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

If they got Circle (with optional offshoot action) to play then I'd seriously consider it, but as it is it would be just too expensive overall to justify for that lineup.

krakow, Saturday, 2 February 2008 07:54 (seventeen years ago)

definitely not worth my money. also, they conspicuously ignored my friends in stone breath, so fuck em.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 2 February 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

u guys are making me sad but it's true, I would not go if I did not have a ton of friends on Lville/Indiana that I need to see this year.

sleeve, Saturday, 2 February 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

I think Bardo is the only one on that list to have played ALL terrastocks, right?

No, Damon and Naomi and Windy and Carl are the other ones to have done all of 'em, IIRC.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 February 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

In terms of 'groups I am interested in seeing that I have not seen before anywhere': Grails, Hush Arbors, Linus Pauling Quartet, Mono, MV/EE (missed 'em last time), Plastic Crimewave Sound, Wooden Shjips.

In terms of 'they'll always put on a great show': AMT, Bardo, Kinski, Windy and Carl, Major Stars, Tanakh, Pelt, Paik

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 February 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

anticipating indeed. Rhode Island 2 years ago was amazing, the first music festival I've ever went to. Accomodations were great too, with yummy burritos and the sound system amazing! I'm going to have to trek out to Kentucky this year??? that's going to be kind of a pain I must admit, otherwise so looking forward to this.

highschoolworld, Saturday, 2 February 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Holy shit, I just remembered this about 5 minutes after creating my "festivals" post. I know Oneida, MV&EE, SIMPLY FUCKING SAUCER (when did they get back together?), Acid Mothers, Mono, and Tanakh, but can someone tell me what else is good here? I haven't been keeping up with my psych/drone at all.

And more importantly, how "primitive" is the "primitive camping" listed on the site? I don't know if I can do this if I'd have to stay in a hotel as the funds are running rather low this year, but camping it may certainly be possible.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 04:03 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Advance tickets now at $85. Current lineup with specific stage times:

http://www.terrascope.co.uk/Terrastock7/Terrastock7_performers.htm

To answer questions above:

I know Oneida, MV&EE, SIMPLY FUCKING SAUCER (when did they get back together?), Acid Mothers, Mono, and Tanakh, but can someone tell me what else is good here?

Offhand: Paik, Black Forest/Black Sea, Windy and Carl, Bardo Pond, Kinski, Linus Pauling Quartet, Pelt, Jack Rose...

And more importantly, how "primitive" is the "primitive camping" listed on the site? I don't know if I can do this if I'd have to stay in a hotel as the funds are running rather low this year, but camping it may certainly be possible.

From here:

http://www.terrascope.co.uk/Terrastock7/Terrastock7_accommodation.htm

The Mellwood Art Center is a big old factory with tons of land around it in the middle of the city. The primitive campsites are in a grassy field around a parking lot. There are woods with a raised highway overpass close by. (Your night time choir will be frogs and semis.) The camping area is right on the site where Terrastock VII will take place. Simply park your car, pitch a tent, walk up the hill about 100 ft and you’re there.

The cost is $30 per site for one day or the entire time of the festival.

No running water is available at the campsite itself, but the main building is a short walk away.

Port-a-johns will be located at the campsite. Showers are available at the on-site fitness center for an additional small cost.

The Camping area is slightly secure: it is recommended not leaving your valuables unwatched in tents.

The festival and facility will not be responsible for lost, damaged or stolen items.

Campers will be asked to sign a waiver upon arrival.

Campsites can be reserved or can be available on a walk up basis if spaces are available.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

Batoh/Espvall

Masaki Batoh and Espers together?

s. morris, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

Or just Batoh and Helena?

s. morris, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

the mag bar ain't going anywhere.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 07:09 (seventeen years ago)

Can't decide if I want to fly all the way, or to Chicago (maybe St. Louis?) and then rent a car for a small road trip.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 08:05 (seventeen years ago)

chicago's probably cheaper to fly into? dunno. maybe cincy would work, too. that'd be the shortest drive of those three options. and you could stop in rabbit hash, kentucky, on the way.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

fly into nashville and drive up

Edward III, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

I lucked into a crazy cheap flight connection via Frontier -- LA to Denver, Denver to Louisville, $100 or so.

Word on ticket availability in general:

There are less than 200 full festival passes left. If you know folks who are debating about coming, tell them to get on it now. When those passes are gone, that's all folks. There are 200 day passes a day and at this point we are NOT planning to sell any at the door.

Meantime the hotel word is:

Geographically the closest hotel to the venue is: Ramada Inn at Zorn Avenue

As at March 8th, they have a few rooms available as follows:

Friday rates are $79+15% room tax

Saturday rates are $69+15% room tax

Sunday rates are $62+15% room tax

Monday rates are $62+15% room tax

You need to call to reserve: the number is: (+001) 15028975101 and you must mention the Terrastock Music Festival.

Free Parking! Free Deluxe Continental Breakfast!

We are also recommending the Extended Stay America - Dutchman hotel as a place to stay. This is where the majority of the bands may be staying. Note that there is no special discount rate, so no need to mention Terrastock: rooms are not more than $57.00 a night. If the Extended Stay Dutchman fills up, then we recommend the Extended Stay St. Matthews which is literally half a mile away.

Another recommended hotel is the Holiday Inn Hurstbourne (I-64 East) which sits beside the expressway (Go West) straight to Mellwood Avenue.

Room Cost is $85.00 with the Terrastock Festival

Currently I'm at the Dutchman, will be flying in on the Wednesday.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

obvs I'm pretty stoked that this is in my backyard, and I'm sure lots of other Bloomington folks will be going. say it again: SIMPLY FUCKING SAUCER!! That's like the next best thing to Les Rallizes Denudes coming to the midwest (i don't know if I mean that). Slightly bummed about AMT being reduced to Kawabata and The Unnamed Guests, but oh well. got my ticket in the mail today.

people explosion, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

that holiday inn also features freddie george on the piano in the lounge weekend nights. freddie george is like a septugenarian syrian tranny who kicks ass at "bohemian rhapsody," among other great tunes. total afterparty vibe.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, wow!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

also the lounge has shaq pinball.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

OK I am really going to this. However, I am ditching Saturday night's lineup in favor of a major reunion with old friends in Bloomington IN two-plus hours away. I am really glad that I'm not missing the Wooden Shjips set and I sincerely hope the schedule doesn't change any more. Bummed about missing Sapat but 25-year-old friendships are a stronger pull.

is there an ILX member count for this yet besides Ned & I?

sleeve, Friday, 2 May 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

Friendships bah. Oh wait.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 May 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

does anyone know anything about the campsites? are they still available even? and is it really just one tent per site?

kamerad, Friday, 2 May 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be there, as will Rabies.

BigLurks, Friday, 2 May 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

i wish i was goin.
saw most of the lineup at the last terrastock, or since, but would LOVE to see Sapat.

ian, Friday, 2 May 2008 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

OK slight change of plans.

The reunion show gig in Bloomington is Friday night. so I get to see Sapat, but miss Espvall/Batoh. whine, snivel, sob.

ian I am sad that I will not meet you.

sleeve, Monday, 5 May 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I could take the time off of work, really, but I have to take time off this weekend and a week in July, and airfare to Kentucky really isn't in my budget sadly. We'll meet someday, Sleeve, no worries.

ian, Monday, 5 May 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

airfare to Kentucky was really fucking expensive. I wouldn't have done it if not for the added value of this reunion thing.

sleeve, Monday, 5 May 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

so yeah, I hear ya. I'll just have to come record shopping at Academy someday.

sleeve, Monday, 5 May 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

anytime yer in the city, we will drink beer and listen to records; promise.

ian, Monday, 5 May 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

is there an ILX member count for this yet besides Ned & I?

I'm in.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 5 May 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

Rock. Rrrobyn was still plotting on this too, I think.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 May 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

Man, things keep going wrong for Phil. I kind of feel bad for him. Bevis Frond dropped off the bill due to bereavement. That's like 5 acts that have dropped so far since it was announced.

Reatards Unite, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm, I need to sign back on to the forum, then.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, thanks for the kind thought, but there's no need to feel bad for me (not just yet, anyway! Plenty of time left for minor disasters to befall us in the coming weeks...) There's always a certain amount of attrition when it comes to trying to confirm bands a long away ahead - hence why we maintain a reserves list. We wouldn't have been able to have included Sleeping Pill (which is aka Yo La Tengo) on the bill if someone or another hadn't dropped out for example. I'm still feeling upbeat and excited about T7 - I honestly believe that it's going to be one of the best yet.

Phil, Monday, 12 May 2008 08:03 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be there, can't wait.

RabiesAngentleman, Monday, 12 May 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

Been wanting to chime in for a long time. Finally, the registration thing worked for me.

This festival planning has been a comedy of craziness. The hotel situation with the baptist convention coming to town was the first in a long line of "hold your breath" moments. I'm simply waiting for the next. For sure planning as long as we have been has its positives and droves of negatives. Too much time to fret and freak out. Not enough time to get everything done the way that I want.

The market should be interesting for merch hounds. The campsite is being adorned by a local artist...who might also be asked to grace the outdoor stage with some color. For the hardcore folks who don't want to leave the premises there are food boths and one of the restaurants, "Lonnie's Fun Food Cafe" is grilling both veggies and non-veggies in addition to taking care of our alcoholic needs. There are 3 restaurants on site. There's more but I'll save it.

Email your friends and tell them to buy the tickets now. We're under 100 Full Festival left in addition to some day passes. I expect the festival to sell out.

goo, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, heya there goo. Sorry it took a while to get that worked out re: registration! (Not that I handle it but you know.)

Three restaurants on site? Loving it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm glad I didn't commit to this, because a work junket has come up that interferes with it, and then there's CA in August I need to save up for. Still wish I could go.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

You'll be out in CA in August? Drop a line if you're going to be in SoCal!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

I'm so glad I'm not in the phase of my life that involves work junkets.

filthy dylan, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

I'll just be in Sacramento (for work) and the Bay Area (for fun), Ned. Would like to do more, but $$$ restrictions.

filthy, if you lived where I lived, you'd jump at any chance to travel.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 22:04 (seventeen years ago)

haven't even looked at ilx in a long time, but obviously i'll be there, since i live in louisville. looking forward to seeing ned, chris, robyn (if she's coming), et al.

terrastock is going to cap like a week and a half of crazy awesome shows here. the weekend before, chris brokaw, the weird weeds and the brothers unconnected (aka alan and rick bishop of sun city girls) are playing separate shows in town. and i think there's something else good on wednesday before terrastock? not sure, but it's busy as fuck. good times.

ps. thursday and friday mornings 7-11 am i'll be working at derby city espresso on market street (between preston and floyd), so any/all ilxors should stop by and have a cappucino or three.

hstencil, Saturday, 31 May 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

duly noted!

sleeve, Saturday, 31 May 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

Let us know! And good to hear from you sir -- I'm actually arriving in town on Wednesday evening, though maybe not early enough to make the show. Will definitely look to catch up with you Thursday morning to start with, though.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 31 May 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

At the T7 Plannnig camp, we still need a few more volunteers....

if anyone wants to mind a door, table or help with the stage...

hit me up....

And another act drops off the bill...

I know it's not Phil's fault and I don't fault him at all, but it just sucks all around. At least none of the acts I really want to see (besides Acid Mothers Temple dropping down to a solo act) have backed out....yet..

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

It's more about the experience in the end in toto. Not in Toto, though.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah. Although if Simply Saucer, Oneida, or Mono dropped off, I'm not gonna lie....I'd be pretty damn disappointed. I think it's a little late for anyone else to quit now though. The lineup should be pretty final by now.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

I will be camping also (for the first two nights) and will probably be wearing my Pussy Galore shirt at some point over the four days, since my girlfriend doesn't particularly care for me to wear it around people who don't have a good knowledge of music.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha. Well there'll be some sort of ILXish agglomeration over the weekend I'm sure.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

wait, who canceled?

sleeve, Thursday, 12 June 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

can't be as bad as the Pantaleimon cancel.

sleeve, Thursday, 12 June 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

oh, here we go...

June 11th: According to Keith from Kemado Records, Marissa Nadler "will need to cancel her upcoming gig at Terrastock due to unforeseen complications with the recording of her new album. We are all extremely sorry that this has to happen (particularly so last minute), but I'm sure you understand that the completion of her new album is a huge priority."

Well, no, actually Keith - I'm rather old fashioned I suppose, and was brought up to believe a prior commitment is a priority commitment, especially when it's a commitment to the fans. But, what the hell. Please direct your complaints not to us, but to <ke✧✧✧@kem✧✧✧.c✧✧>.

heh heh.

sleeve, Thursday, 12 June 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

good thing I didn't care about her!

sleeve, Thursday, 12 June 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

If Simply Saucer drop off the ticket I will cry.

I'll be the tall scrawny guy in black cowboy boots, and probably my Sioux City Pete and the Beggars shirt since I wear it almost every day. Will be with about 4 other people including BigLurks and his gf...her sister...another roommate...

RabiesAngentleman, Thursday, 12 June 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

I will hunt you down. Oh wait that sounds wrong.

When's everyone getting into town, anyway? I'm arriving Wednesday night, staying over at the Extended Stay Dutchman.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 June 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

I'm there on Tuesday, but in Bloomington on Wednesday, driving back to L-ville on Thurs morning, probably decamping right at the festival. I should be up and running by late Thursday afternoon.

Anyone know if there are any good record stores left in Louisville? I know of Ear X-tacy, but that's the only one I've heard about.

Reatards Unite, Friday, 13 June 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

Still very much looking forward to this! and also terribly excited about the Brothers Unconnected THIS WEEKEND. If anybody else is passing through Bloomington on Wednesday, we're fortunate enough to have this PRE-TERRASTOCK show that night. (also there'll be a pre-show to the pre-terrastock show at my house that night with more local flavor, if anybody's interested getahold of me)

An unbelievable collection of musicians from across the ocean, across the land, and across town... each are headed to the Terrastock Festival, which is in Louisville this year the following weekend: http://www.terrascope.co.uk/

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 13 June 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

I'll be there Saturday and Sunday. I'll be the short kid wearing a plain t-shirt, standing around with the above- described Rabies, a dude in a Twins hat and Skynyrd shirt, a girl who looks like me, and a girl who looks like her but doesn't look like me.

^You missed Roger Adultery playing with Hush Arbors, though!

Wish I could have seen that. Can't afford the drive from Missouri.
Have to save for a trip to Seattle next month. The Sub Pop whoopty-do is happening while I'll be there, but that doesn't really compare with Terrastock in my universe.

Trip Maker, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

I just went to Pitchfork to see if they had a report on Terrastock, maybe some photos, but instead, all I found were headlines about Josh Homme's fag-baiting and "Jena Malone's shoe," and not even a mention of a 4-day festival featuring Simply Saucer and some of the most noteworthy underground bands of the past ten years. I guess if Fleet Foxes aren't playing, it's not really worth reporting on?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 20 June 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, I see "The Shoe" is the name of Jena Malone's "band." Can't wait to hear that.

I like Ned's live reports. Bardo Pond "pretty much refuse to suck" sooo OTM.

Also v. v. jealous of Kinski, MV+EE, many many more.

Ned, Elvis, sleeve, can you guys say a little more about Ira/Georgia as Sleeping Pill? The Terrastock site said they wouldn't be doing YLT songs, I wonder if this was correct though. Any other comments?

stephen, Sunday, 22 June 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)

Listening to the stream-of-consciousness-acid-lounge-improv of "Cornicopian Freestyle," (Jena Malone's) Shoe would not have been wildly out of place at Terrastock.

I really wish I were spending this weekend at the festival rather than holed up in Van Nuys without any a/c.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

I think I'll just put this here...

We caught a pre-Terrastock show in Bloomington on Wednesday night. Kohoutek opened, I think they just did a short set and didn't really get going, plus the acoustic guitar was mixed real low. Their drummer (same guy as was in Insect Factory) has some major improv chops.

Ignatz seemed like he barely spoke English, didn't recognize words in his vocals but everything coming out of his tiny guitar/mixer/amp/mic setup had this great decayed sound to it. Sorta reminded me of electric Jandek circa You Walk Alone (except solo).

United Bible Studies were the best thing I saw all week. According to the other Bloomingtonites that saw them at Terrastock later on, this set was better. Both their guitarist and I recorded this show and I hope to release it somehow since they have, like, no distro or records in this country. Their lineup is expanded from what is on their released CDs, with at least one additional member (the blonde pianist/singer). I have now listened to their one proper studio CD and it is superb.

Also playing at that Bloomington show was a really talented solo guy playing under the name of Norman Oak (or sometimes Poison Oak), he would fit right in on the rolling freak/psych/drone thread.

For various reunion reasons detailed upthread I missed everything up to the last minute of Oneida at the actual Terrastock.

Wooden Shjips were as good as I expected, nice guitar tone and you could really hear the electric squelches. They sold out of their singles comp LP before I could buy one!

Tara Jane Oneil turned in a very different set than I'd seen from her before, more electric drony and a lot less folky.

Kinski fucking rocked. Later on Sunday during the thunderstorm I briefly and foolishly took refuge under one of the tables at the back of the outside area, next to (I think) the bassist. "Wow, it doesn't rain like this in Seattle" she said.

Then on the 3rd stage we got to see a mostly acoustic jam with United Bible Studies people, Sharon Krauss, and others. Fine.

I though MV/EE were a bit better doing sub-Neil Young rock than stoned hippie duo jams, but I still fail to understand their prominence in this scene.

We went and had excellent barbecue with Mr Raggett, Elvis Telecom, and others. Upon returning we dealt with tent stuff and went to check out Bardo Pond. Formidable and gloriously loud and full - I understand there were sound problems earlier at the event but everything I heard throughout the weekend sounded fantastic.

Grails killed it, nice to see Portland bring the jams.

About halfway through Motorpsycho my girlfriend (who comes from a very different music background than ILM i.e. not a fan or collector) asked me "So, are all these bands TRYING to sound the same?" I conceded that she had a point given what we had seen on the outside stage so far.

I had really been looking forward to Sapat's set and was not surprised to find out that two of my more musically adventurous Louisville friends were sitting in with them (trumpet and standup bass, on the right). Although a couple of their tunes suffered from the "jam on one or two ideas for 4-5 minutes" problem, this was still one of my favorite sets that I saw. The classically trained singer was great as a surprise showstopper.

I had been up really late the night before and started to get delirious during Mono's set, but they seemed very enthusiastic. I didn't really get it but I was also talking to old friends. We were asleep by the time Kohoutek started, maybe Elvis saw 'em.

Laurie and I watched a 3rd stage set during Sexfist (who replaced Team Brick), from Ned I learn that they were an impromptu supergroup of sorts.

Rob Sharples seemed a little out of place doing straight introspective-sounding folkie tunes, but it sounded good early in the day. With excellent intuition, we skipped down the street and bought a blue tarp to cover our tent. Caught the end of American Revolution and it was the best-sounding 60's psych-pop revisionism I've heard in a while, I can still remember the tunes.

Insect Factory had another of my favorite drum performances along with excellent dulcimer (autoharp?) guesting by Mike Tamburo and a massive guitar sound.

Simply Saucer sounded great to me, really heard a lot of Beefheart in their dislocated guitar patterns. Then the rain poured down after maybe 4 songs. We went and got food, then caught the end of their second set. I never saw copies of their alleged limited CD, it probably sold out on Friday.

I wished I was lying down during Pelt's set, 40-odd minutes of rich raga-drone that I hope gets released some day.

An anonymous local friend of mine said he had walked out on Jack Rose three times, and after seeing the blatant Fahey aping on display I could understand why. Not bad, just a little bit too much the equivalent of a Nirvana tribute band or something.

About 2/3 of the way through the Entrance Band, Ned walks up. "This band is awesome!" I yell. "I've never heard of them!"

Ned gives me, in like 30 seconds, a total rundown of their origins, influences and contemporaries but it sounded kind of like "info info Dazzle Ships info folkie turned rock god info info Plastic Crimewave", classic Raggett moment. Turned out he was saying goodbyes so we did. Nice to meet ya Ned!

Entrance continue through a scorching electric set that really sounded great to me, plus the guy did a genuine hippy rap on stage about loving everybody, not trusting the gov't, and where he could score some weed.

Laurie and I got into a big discussion after Windy & Carl's set (which I quite enjoyed, being unfamiliar with them). Her take was essentially classic rockist without the condemnation, more like puzzlement. She found the slides too manipulative, intended to convey specific feelings that (in her opinion) should be the job of the music. She drew a contrast to the Nurse With Wound show we saw that featured projections, noting that those were more abstract and open to subjective interpretation, which she prefers. She also felt the technology to chops ratio was a little high. I love having the opinion of somebody with no music-geek background sometimes!

Paik were like some bomb going off outside. Finally somebody really put the smoke machines and strobes and outside volume levels to the test. Devastating.

Loved the Kawabata set although I have mixed feelings about volume abuse. My favorite part was the bowed section where he sounded like a cellist.

I have worked at a large long-running annual outdoor festival for many years, so from my view this was clearly a first effort. Given that, I thought it went really well. More food onsite would have been better (a fresh fruit stand in particular). The only really major issue that I had trouble understanding was the lack of a portapotty and handwashing station for the campsite, those are not that expensive and unless there was some legal reason they couldn't do it it's pretty inexcusable (and dangerous). Maybe the bathrooms in the center were kept open all night, I dunno. Also, I assume/hope those shower passes were $10 for the whole weekend, not per shower. Again, I dunno, we had friends in town and got clean there. The security guys were great and totally mellow. Everything I saw started on time and sounded good. So thanks Erica, Rob, Phil, etc.

sleeve, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

An anonymous local friend of mine said he had walked out on Jack Rose three times, and after seeing the blatant Fahey aping on display I could understand why. Not bad, just a little bit too much the equivalent of a Nirvana tribute band or something.

This is utter bullshit. Your friend who 'walked out' is probably basing that on a John Fahey greatest hits CD he heard once, and most likely does not play guitar. Nirvana tribute band? Please.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

Wrong about my friend. And you may think it's bullshit but I called it like I saw and heard it. However, I will take your outraged recommendation and give the dude a chance on record someday.

sleeve, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

Jack Rose is in Pelt, too, ya know.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, and I loved that! He was playing the hurdy-gurdy I think. I preferred it to his guitar.

sleeve, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

also, we should all harass Pfork for failing to promote and cover this.

sleeve, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

Was it underattended?
I always kind of thought the "secret society" vibe was part of the appeal.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

Definitely underattended although I think they almost sold out of full passes. Both of the Lville weeklies had features but I don't know how much that helped. Seems like they probably broke even, but I guess we'll find out later.

sleeve, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

That sucks. Really wish I could have gone.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

i bought the last wooden shjips comp. i was standing next to the guy during pelt and asked where they all went. he said he had one more in his bag and i immediately handed him a ten bone
but I still fail to understand their prominence in this scene
there is still spill over love from their pioneering tower recordings stuff, particularly the genre-naming freak scene. but i walked out on them. they were the sub-nirvana tribute band for me. jack rose was awesome. my only complaint was that the banjo player was mixed too high. jack's tone is so warm i like it to wash over me. i agree with your g/friend's assessment regarding saminess. it would have been nice to hear more international variety. last terrastock featured some nice finnish fonal records bands. and in walking in late to oneida you might have missed the best show of the whole weekend, at least of the ones i saw. after they finished there was a rush to their merch table. when i got there one dude asked for one of everything, disc and vinyl!

kamerad, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

kamerad, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

sleeve, if you caught the improv set on the merch room table, there was a little bit of the early tower recordings vibe going on. not enough though to give a real clear indication of folkscene though

kamerad, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

who was that guy with the dobro/metal guitar? somewhat older fellow, played in that jam, did a solo set later? I liked him.

Any ideas on where T8 will be? Hopefully gas will go down by then unless it continues to be near the east/mid-east coast.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

I was a little disappointed by Jack Rose's set, actually. I think he's a great, great guitar player, and much more than a Fahey tribute, but the set was essentially just a bunch of old-timey songs performed in a straight forward way -- something I can see almost any day of the week where I'm from, and while it was a virtuoso performance, that style of music is (in my opinion) best played by some sloppy guys who just got off work, you know? I don't doubt his authenticity at all, I would just rather see him let loooooose.

Which brings me to one of my next point: all the bands were really tight! Now some people are into this, but I like some sloppy rock & roll myself. Plastic Crimewave was the first band of the festival to really take me there (actually I really enjoyed parts of local band Parlour's set -- it was just some jams, but the peaks were very high, I thought). And I did like MV + EE's set. There was a little too much stoned jamming, but at least they were high! Tower Recordings were amazing, and I think Matt Valentine is a real artist with some higher ideals, and if he wants to do some stoned out jams, hey, let's see where he goes with it. I'd also like to say I really loved Black Forest/Black Sea's acoustic set. It was very down-to-earth and lovely, and seemed like something I would see in one of my friends living rooms (this is a very high compliment). The quieter it got, the better it was! and there was some lovely drone. I also really liked Windy's third-stage performance.

Pelt, Oneida, Bardo Pond, Plastic Crimewave and Kawabata were the high-above highlights for me. Sapat, Simply Saucer, Entrance Band and Hush Arbors were great, too. The first part of Batoh/Espvall's set (the noisy one) was stellar. Their songs, for me, failed to come across due to sound problems (too distracting, couldn't get into it).

Any other campers get robbed by the junkie jam festival guys? They woke us at 8 in the morning Sunday, obviously casing the tent, and our, uh, parafernalias were missing later in the day. They got our friend Mark's shoes, too. Talk about some lowdown shit to steal...

(xp) I didn't notice that. Drummer just made the same paranoid face he was making the entire set. I assumed it was just part of the show, the final antic to bring the curtains. That bass guy was sorta weird to me. I bought a few records and they accidentally gave me two copies of Monster Of the Absolute. I went back in to give it back and he was like, "Yeah they're not two for one", and couldn't gage how serious he was. (I was probably just tired)
