'That's Not My Name' really is super duper. Look forward to an album.
― foredyke road, Sunday, 24 June 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)
They used to be Dear Eskiimo who weren't quite as good but their song 'Patient' is nice. There's an interview online with DE on the woeful Designer Magazine website but I can't bring myself to link to it because the writing and design of that site is just rotten.

terrible band. the next in a long line of empty rubbish fashion punk bands that manchester hammers out. they used to be nylon pylon as well for christ sake. the singer is super hot though, i occasionally try and smell her when shes sashaying around the ponce factorys of manc's NQ

Wither Superstring/Alpinestars/Performance/Megarider (I'm not sure they really existed though)? And Haven, who are part of Joe Moss's woeful lineage of bands not as good as the Smiths.

hmm these ere NQ ponce factories get some dissin locally, but which ones do you mean straight? i mean specifically? and which 'fashion punk' bands do you mean?
― pisces, Monday, 11 February 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)
oh they all existed alright. i spent most of the early 00's in scuzzy clubs being underwhelmed by each and every one of them. i hold my hands up to the NP mixup, i'll just have to dislike the tings solely on the basis of their music then.

i diss the NQ loads but i live there and am a flat out ponce myself so i cant really take the piss that much. its more the post club suicide indie/electro folk that turn out the worst, and they tend to get signed due to a fit girl on one finger synths. the worst offenders have been mentioned above. the ting tings didnt really come from that scene but the same sort of 'next big thing' watchers lap them up cos of the sexy girl. apparently she used to be in a serious endsleigh league girl band that toured with girls aloud etc so i doubt their motives a little.

I thought Ms Ting Ting looked somewhat hawt in a photograph, but I am not so shallow that I would like a band on that basis. Unless they were Ladytron.

― Bodrick III, Monday, 12 May 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)
the ting tings = great breezy summer pop, cute smart fun female-fronted, just what manchester needs to wash away all this FUCKAWFUL £££-in ian curtis revivalism of the past few months.
the real villains of modern manchester are the the courteeners. angry little-england conservatism wrapped up in union jack guitars and delia smith hairstyles. complete with archetypal frontman masquerading as downtrodden working-class voice of the common man while he's the son of teachers from a middle class suburb.
ting tings = ecstacy + summer. courteeners = cocaine + casual misogyny

ay ya ya people actually like this shit???
reposting from uk chart thread:
the ting tings may actually be the ~worst band~ i have heard this year. her stupid voice makes me want to kill. if this is the closest these boring hos can get to dance music they shouldn't have bothered. "and the drums and the drums and the drums" ad nauseam may actually be the worst pop moment in, like, a decade or something (or maybe "EEE-EEE-EE" is worse?). also THEIR NAME WTF
srsly her voice makes me all killy. and in the video she does that lame pose to go with her lame mannered accent. this shit is ~not fun~~
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)
i guess she doesn't sound british enough
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 19:50 (seventeen years ago)
too british if anything
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)
too STUPID is more to the point though
The mannered posing stuff made the video work, I thought.
I can't imagine ever willingly listening to this song again, even though I enjoyed watching the video.
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 19:52 (seventeen years ago)
"The drums the drums the drums the drums etc" just sounds like detached electroclash bullshit to me, but she really doesn't spend the rest of the album doing that, fortunately. Honestly, I think "Great DJ" might be its worst song; there are only a couple others that I don't like. Haven't seen the video.
― xhuxk, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 19:57 (seventeen years ago)
I hate them so much I'm actually plotting things against them that I can't really talk about on here. Its not just the singer its the drummer, they are asinine. Ah screw it, I'm just going to heckle them if I have the misfortune to bump into them at a festival.
― VeronaInTheClub, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)
you can only get away with mannered posiness if you look good or sound good though
when not making me want to tear my eardrums out/rip her vocal cords out she manages to be both really characterless AND really annoying. like, so stacey's not your name but why should i care what your name is?
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 17 June 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)
xp Or, I should say, "only a couple others that I accurately dis-like." Can't say they have any songs I absolutely love either, but the Altered Images/Blondie/Bangles parts seem kind of fun to me.

That's Not My Name sounds pretty good when coming from an unobtrusive quiet little sound system in a bar, pretty much horrible when you actually come home and google the chorus and check out the song.
In my experience.

Don't fancy the girl at all but I think "That's Not My Name" is a really fun song - heard it at a club a few weeks ago at just the right time in my personal dance buzz and it really nailed me somehow. Just got me all skittery. I like how they marshal all this production drama as the song goes on, even though there's absolutely no content to back it up - it really works, IMO.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 July 2008 05:07 (seventeen years ago)
I saw them live a few weeks ago (the first band of an 8-band festival with the likes of Dan Deacon, Crystal Castles, and Vampire Weekend) and it was quite silly. All their songs consist of taking some word or phrase and repeating it several times over and over. And at one point the singer, in a most arrogant and self-absorbed fashion, threw her used guitar pick into the audience, as if someone would actually want a used Ting Ting's guitar pick.

― edwardo, Thursday, 17 July 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)
no, i don't care, i still think they're harmless and fun. i'd listen to their songs over anything NYPC (whom they really remind me of, actually, far more than they remind me of CSS) in a heartbeat.
― Keaney Tong, Friday, 18 July 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)
They're the British New Young Pony Club. Only people hate the Ting Tings far too much as a knee-jerk reaction, and apologists liked NYPC far too much. At least Metacritic ratings seem that way.
They both seem like "modern" lifestyle music - I feel they're the kind of acts that major labels don't really understand but see that the young kids who dress funny on their MySpaces will listen to them. Up next - NME hype, and hate from ILM! Which, actually, is fine by me.
― skygreenleopard, Friday, 18 July 2008 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

heard a snippet of dizzee on the ahem radio 1 live lounge doing "that's not my name", actually sounded pretty worthwhile. radio 1 live lounge covers of course usually vomit worthy, cf. the other snippet i heard of the ting tings themselves doing "standing in the way of control" horrendously mashed up with snap's "the power", it was worse than you could possibly imagine.
― ledge, Saturday, 19 July 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)
I just listened to the whole album all the way through. This is possibly the worst record I have ever done this to. Everything is so thin - the writing goes nowhere, nothing's happening in the arrangements, it's all treble... gah.

grow up, or down, whatever, all of you
― gabbneb, Sunday, 20 July 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)
I don't imagine the album is great, but that's not my name is one of those perfect pop songs that taps into the soft spot between incredibly irritating and abrasively brilliant. It fits into that lineage of cartoonish British pop songs that you hear on the radio or see on TOTP2 sometime. It also doesn't really have anything to do with anything else in the charts. Its spiritual forebear is "Wannabe".

Its American equivalent is "Hollaback Girl."

my nine-year-old nephew has the album (he went from "i hate the ting tings" to "i love the ting tings" in the space of a week) and from what i've heard of it, it's surprisingly OK. i love "that's not my name" and it will almost certainly be in my 2008 top-20.
All their songs consist of taking some word or phrase and repeating it several times over and over
what? pop music? repeating some word or phrase several times over and over? well i never.
― grimly fiendish, Monday, 21 July 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)
DG griping that they're not edgy (did they ever claim to be?), a dash of misogyny from 'some dude' and (as grimly just pointed out) some other moron hating pop music for being pop music. sterling work ILX08.

it's like when you meet kids that were home school by born again christian parents and they have this weird skewed view of the world cuz they weren't exposed to anything. like they don't know any TV shows that everyone knows, so everything seems pretty mindblowing to them.
― M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 21 July 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

"Hollaback Girl"'s a good comparison - there aren't too many of those songs like that one and "Shut Up and Let Me Go", tracks that are so compulsively listenable and entertaining, even as they irritate the hell outta me. ("Wannabe" didn't irritate me in the least.) Plus it's always nice to hear that "Good Times" guitar lick recycled yet again. Is this stuff popular with the young kiddies? Next time I see my 11-year old niece, I'll have to ask her opinion.

I like Mrs. Ting's taste in headwear, but that doesn't make up for how awful their music is.
Their sound is like an untalented teenage girl being inspired by her boyfriend's description of an Art Brut cover band (that he doesn't know is a cover band).

my favorite part was when the guitarist switched to drums just so a more talented musician could play the guitar solo
― crüt, Thursday, 12 April 2012 17:07 (thirteen years ago)
New single is basically drum and bass c.1998. Only they know why.
