can't believe there isn't a thread on this already...

i've only downloaded the first disc but most of it (except crazy) is unbelievable

kevin mulligan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 08:24 (eighteen years ago)

"damn right I kiss my daddy" vs "feed me feed me feed me .. no homo"

tpp, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:00 (eighteen years ago)

When he says "Miss caramel, I need three scoops" in that Mya song I want to punch things.

Belisarius, Thursday, 10 May 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)

It's a new game and I'm the coach like Avery
Leave it to the flow we're gettin' dough like the bakery
I don't really want to but these niggas makin' me
Put a motherfucker on ice like the Maple Leaves
That's a hockey team and I ain't know no hockey team
But I'm a champion, where's the fuckin' Rocky theme?
Damn, rest in peace Apollo Creed

Hatch, Thursday, 10 May 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

does he really say "leaves" instead of "Leafs"? inquiring minds wanna know

J0hn D., Thursday, 10 May 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

Damn, rest in peace Apollo Creed

Classic.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 10 May 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Definitely sounds like "Leaves" to me, but I'm thinking "flow" might actually be "floor," it's hard to say.

So many classic verses on this one...

And when I was five
My favorite movie was the Gremlins
Ain't got shit to do with this
But I just tought that I should mention
You're looking for divine
And a little intervention
And the birds don't fly
Without my permission
I'm probly in the sky
Flyin' with the fishes
Or maybe in the ocean
Swimmin' with the pigeons
See my world is different
Like Duane Wayne
And if you want trouble
Bitch, I want the same thang

Hatch, Thursday, 10 May 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

amazing but probably a cry for help

The Macallan 18 Year, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

it's almost too much

Stylus reviewed it.

*ducks*

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 14 May 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

whats the proper tracklisting? because ive seen at least two alternate listings around

splates, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

his rapping over Upgrade U is great

splates, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:16 (eighteen years ago)

i wuz abt t' rewrite current wayne in a verse-off of lyrical titans bt no1's releasing competition i can see + i'm lazy

i was impressed w a ton of moments here, bt mainly the intro t' 1 of the disks. wasn't impressed w/the blooded up song or when forever juelz talked before making some really rational remarks. dipset is higher strung, ratcheted up in the vein of tru life. mb i'm jst mad cuz bloods were fucking w me on the bus the other day, wearing their signs or some gay shit-- red stars like a retard . . .

az 4 wayne, his lyrics r hellafied poetic, esp recently

every1 ws talking abt this like 2 mos ago

all i think of when i hear this was how much more heartfelt and less weird bad azz vol 2 was-- wayne can get into veins of gold and i like his self-doubt and lack of narcissism while holding that skill, bt there's something that just doesn't hold, like tantric sex vs taking viagra and exctasy-- he's sort of stuck in the middle. fuck my jabbering though, i aught relisten, chop a highlite reel instead a typing this ponderous bullshit

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Monday, 14 May 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

but I'm thinking "flow" might actually be "floor," it's hard to say. this is ironic

the multiplicity of the #/meaning/image is what he survives on, and that only occurs with prismic heart sometimes, i think-- he keeps it sublime enough i guess- bt i'm jagkn, all i really care abt is whoever c-murder releases & the next 50 cent

and i wish the fish pigeon thing were +2 Poetic

o that reminds me i did a remix of R U Still Down ftrng Too Poetic, and it's better than anything wayne's ever done except that song like way i am off lights out

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Monday, 14 May 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

can't take him seriously any more, but can't take him for 'fun' either

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit, people are liking him JUMP!!!

filthy dylan, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

no he just sounds silly! i can list artists 'people' (meaning what, ilmers? hipsters? cuz wayne was selling platinum records in the 90s) like that i do too if you want

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

i don't hate this stuff or anything, i just feel silly listening to it. like it's patting itself on the back and winking at you every time he says a word

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

So who are you liking these days Deej?

curmudgeon, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

lately all i've been listening to is dj quik and big mike. The big mike album from last year was great and i don't know how it got missed by everybody (i just discovered it via emusic).

But I still like Lil Wayne's first audience-crossover period stuff circa the Carter and as far as the Carter II. It just feels like he's gone over the edge or something. He's not making songs any more, I guess, its like reading madlibs or something - he's clever and i can see why this very formalist rapping appeals but lately i've found i enjoy that stuff as a seemingly unintentional byproduct, not so in-your-face if that makes any sense - what are his songs about any more?

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

Rap criticism in a post-Dipset landscape.

SDJ came harder than 99.9% of rappers out there today.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

too early for sex talk, dom

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

Beloved crooner SAMMY DAVIS JR. attempted suicide on his wedding night because racial jibes drove him mad, according to a new biography. The MR. BOJANGLES singer's former personal assistant ARTHUR SILBER JR. has revealed the cabaret star's personal pain in a new memoir, SAMMY DAVIS JR. ME AND MY SHADOW. Silber claims the song-and-dance man was distraught at having to end his secret romance with actress KIM NOVAK after mobsters, who disapproved of the interracial match, threatened to kill him. Sammy then wed dancer LORAY WHITE in a marriage of convenience, but drank too much at the ceremony and wailed, "Why can't I be with the woman I love?" Silber recalls, "Sammy was putting a gun to his head. I jumped on top of him and pinned his arms as I wrestled the gun out of his hand. It was loaded. "I twisted his arm and the gun fell to the floor."

Dom Passantino, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

haha stylus mentioned madlibs too, but they meant it as a compliment i think

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

he's basically just turning into the dirty south kool keith. i guess how you view that is up to you.

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

maybe i would like lil wayne if he had a glass eye

the only rapper that should be compared to SDJ is bushwick bill

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

i keep one eye open like

a) CBS
b) Bushwick Bill
c) Sammy Davis Jr.

deej, Monday, 14 May 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Unrelated to this thread a little, were both the Cash Money Crew and the No Limit crew both from New Orleans? Because I remember them both getting big around the same time, but I don't remember any interaction between the two at all.

filthy dylan, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

cocaine blunts and hip hop tapes, no articles-- journalists never got in it deep as far as i can tell. anecdotes-- scant interviews (read murder dog), nothing really in depth or life-story style. that nerd white dude off the mtv2 dirty states of america or whatever it's called??

who would you talk to to get a retrospective survey to map the subliminals after 93??? who could convince klc to let you hear his archives, let you know what was happening? talk to turk in prison? i'm sure there aren't many subjects, journalists who could unearth the tides of the drug war and the mercurial power tied to the music at the border. ethan brown sort of did it 4 nyc. historians r 2 slow.

-- am0n, Tuesday, May 15, 2007 8:20 AM (1 hour ago)

i'm not that vigilant! i felt better after i finally decided i only ever really needed to listen to critical beatdown, the four horseman, and dr. octagon as far as keith stuff goes...but i dunno, the stuff i've been hearing wayne do lately kinda reminds me of keith (not totally but in a way)..just the off the top of the head nonsense type flow.

i like keith overall, except i'm still pissed about the time i saw him live.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

green eyebrows!

am0n, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

It seems to me like Wayne uses internal rhyme a lot more than Keith does, but maybe I'm not listening hard enough in Keith's stuff.

xpost

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

I might like Da Drought 3 more if there was a little MORE nonsense, the punchlines almost gets to be tiring.

Weezy over Gnarls Barkley feels like a shark-jump, that song is terrible

I still like a lot of this mix though, I'll just edit out half of it for my ipod

the throw some d's one I like ... upgrade, blooded, king kong and the nas remakes are all pretty good ...

dmr, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

the amount/frequency of punchlines

can't type today

dmr, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

what are his songs about any more?

this doesn't strike me as very potent criticism--i mean a) the idea that a "good" song has to be "about" something is grounded in a weird, like, aristotelian sense of what makes a song good (i mean what it has a narrative structure or something?) and b) why is this a criticism of rap and not say of rock and c) dude they ARE "about" something (i.e. being young and rich and fucked-up beyond belief and insanely talented) and d) like what are the good rap songs "about"?

or maybe you just mean that you can't take them seriously because they're so goofy and out-there? in which case like, yeah, i get that the subject matter (if there is any) is sorta ridic but it's hard not to take someone that fucking talented seriously no matter what he's rapping about!! i mean what are you asking for out of him?

plus like--

and that white widow weed out the jar is a must
if you gimme a cigar than a cigar i'll bust
put that white widow weed in the cigar and puff
look ma i'm tryina make a porno starrin us
well not just us a couple foreign sluts

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

my favorites so far are seat down low and ride 4 my n*ggas

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

legends like biggie knew to keep the 80s pop cult/weirdo metaphors to 2 or 3 per song cuz shit hits harder

weezy has the mf doom disease

and what, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

will hurry, fuckin wit me real dirty / thats why i bust ghosts, like bill murray

and what, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think it HAS to be about anything. these aren't hard and fast rules. i probably like some of the Doom shit that ethan doesn't like, its just where my tolerance lies for the level of this stuff. Wayne's whole style seems so cartoony, and everyone sees it as NEXT LEVEL. to me at this point its like what i said in that teenpop thread; sometimes you can analyze lyrics and its fun, and other times its like 'an apple is just an apple,' lil wayne saying 'hi mr. toilet i'm the shit' is just a dude too bored to write about anything other than writing for writing's sake.

i know people right now are realllly into this formalist approach of overanalysis (thankfully, so far, Wayne is at least doing SOMEthing, when people did this kind of shit to generic Clipse boasts it was beyond the pale) and i know that at the other end of the spectrum Pac has the exact same issue with dudes overanalyzing every verse he ever recorded. doesn't mean i'm gonna be interested in listening to it though.

deej, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

i should really come up with a new 'generic nu-Wayne' line to quote because that mr. toilet line isn't even as ridiculous as he gets now

deej, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

let's at least let him do a proper album in the style he's currently developing first, decrying mixtape freestyles (even really good and over-praised ones) for being scattershot and not topical seems a little unfair.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

what he needs to do is drop the beats

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

watch out for lil wayne - 70 minutes in hell

Chromski A.K. Gattlington, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

i should mention i'm not dismissing all his new shit out of hand either, i've heard hot verses in there

deej, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

listening to the new stuff on youtube i like king kong and 'zoom freestyle' is along the lines of what i am not feeling at all

deej, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

deej what was yr major in college? i ask b/c im a lit major and i eat this kind of "writing abt writing," blurring the lines btw style/substance bullshit up. i can see how it can get a little grating but id still disagree w/ you abt the "sometimes you can analyze lyrics and sometimes there's no point" but i like wfb not b/c you can analyze his stuff but actually sort of because of the way he absolutely refuses to make songs "about" anything in particular--like its not just like he's denying political/conscious substance in some sense (cf assholes who still say that top 40 rap is like candy) but he's denying substance, period--nothing's going on "behind" or "underneath" the style (there is no underneath the style).

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

i get thats a real undergrad thing to like and stuff, im just trying to articulate why it doesnt really bother me.

max, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

there is no underneath the style

nice.

OMG "La La La" is awesomeeeeeeeeee! I've listened to a lot of great music within the past couple hours, but this track is the only thing stuck in my head.

Tape Store, Saturday, 9 June 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and he says "Carter 3" at the beginning, so maybe it's a leak?

Tape Store, Saturday, 9 June 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

but will you still say that when everybody's talking about how great curren$y is
if this happens in my lifetime i'll give everybody in this thread $20.

Oh, and he says "Carter 3" at the beginning, so maybe it's a leak?
all reports indicate that "la la la" is a carter III leak.
all the leaks off that tape are crazy fantastic, 'cept there are some really deadly serious songs where wayne tugs at some serious heartstrings (its a reeeaaally good look), only to have the whole thing ruined by a subsequent mack maine verse.

the problem with both of those guys is not so much that they can't rhyme (i like a few currensy verses off dedication 2 in theory) but that, especially when juxtaposed next to wayne, they are utterly and totally devoid of any charisma. let's be real, the currensy album (which wayne is supposedly "working on"— another reason why the carter III has benn pushed back to 2034) would be like a book on tape.

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 9 June 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

curren$y and mack maine are fucking great

deej, Saturday, 9 June 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

i can understand not liking them if you also prefer lil wayne spoken word cds to rap, though

deej, Saturday, 9 June 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

to be less snide tho i think the kool keith comparison is off base, to me nu-wayne is like latter day andre raps, where he stopped paying attention to the beat and started doing abstract raps ... theres a context in which it works but i only have so much patience for it and i start wondering about why i even listen to rap.

deej, Saturday, 9 June 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

rap raps raps

deej, Saturday, 9 June 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Have you ever seen "Vertical Diptych," deej?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 9 June 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Fu it, I can't find a link. It's basically two white canvases with frames painted around the borders, creating the effect that you're looking at a pair of framed blank canvases. It's my favorite piece in the whole damn museum. I walked away from it the first time I saw it wondering why the hell I was wandering around staring at stuff hung on walls, trying to figure out if it I felt it deserved to be in the same building as the Greco-Roman sculptures down the hall, and asking myself all kinds of aesthetic questions I wouldn't have otherwise.

I had a similar experience the first time I heard a way-the-hell-out-there flow by like Kool Keith or whoever. "Is this really rap, what is rap" etc. I think anytime an artist makes us asks those questions is a good thing.

"La la la" doesn't necessarily do any of that shit for me, and I don't really get everybody talking about how 'out' his flow is. Maybe I've been listening "Smithereens" too much this week? Regardless, I really like it, but I haven't heard a lot from Weezy 07 I dislike yet.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 9 June 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

But like you say, it can get grating. It's why I can't listen to "Dr. Octagonecolygst" straight through.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 9 June 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

I think my favourite Lil Wayne style is stuff like "Donks" - a little bit off the wall but only in service of the beat, actually reminding me more of Ludacris-at-his-best than anything else. He sounds great over beats like that too.

Tim F, Sunday, 10 June 2007 08:54 (eighteen years ago)

after listening to these carter III leaks, self-hemmed in wayne v. off the wall "donks"/"upgrade" wayne is really starting to fuck with my head.

ludacris is a good jump point i think, especially in terms of out there pop cult refs, though flow not so much which is kinda what wayne is riding on with this stuff in some circles. it's kinda weird that ludacris got more boring and listless as he got older (devolution, i guess) while wayne has evolved from a faceless N.O./cash money dude into this raving fucked-up psycho.

Jordan Sargent, Sunday, 10 June 2007 09:18 (eighteen years ago)

"raving fucked-up psycho" might be a little overkill, I think.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 10 June 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

Wayne has told XXL that the album's first single would be called "La La".

Says Wikipedia, which means it must be true.

LIL WAYNE IS SO AWESOME. He makes me feel like an even bigger slacker than I already am...I like how he changes his mind about an album mid-video.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

my fave part of the video is when he's trying to come up with shit for the Bad Ass Grasshopper (lol) thing and he looks to mack maine for some comedic assistance, and mack maine stares right back at him like Wayne just asked him to pull a tiger out of his pocket.
i swear that man is like a rapping statue.

also, wayne is the consummate stoner sitting there eating a whole domino's pizza himself. when he goes "holla at me if you need me domino's" it's just for the free food (happy gilmore/subway style).

Any thoughts yet on this Carter 3 stuff?

bear, bear, bear, Thursday, 28 June 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

i like a lot of it... "how you like me now" (the supposed timbaland collabo) is really effervescent and "something you forgot" is pretty revelatory, another song in a long line of songs where i'm stunned by wayne's ability to convey the rawest of emotion simply with his voice.

the rest is hit or miss (too many bad young money verses, sorry curren$y fanboys). and then there is "i feel like dying," which is one of the the most mind boggling rap song of the past few years.

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 28 June 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

I really like "i feel like dying" a lot.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 June 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not sure how much i "like" the "song" itself, but i love the idea of it and i love what it represents and i love the idea of wayne doing it and being so genuinely himself.

it's probably hackneyed by now to say that there is no one in rap who could have done that song, and i love that about it and love him for being that person.

I wake up, smoke weed, fuck bitches, get my dick sucked— a lot— drink my drink and come here and do this shit. What am I supposed to do, take a vacation? Go to Cancun and relax? This is a vacation. You got a job, but this vacation right here. I can't front, though— I took that line from the nigga from Kiss."

"I come at shit from a whole other angle. We're both here with the TV on. You watching the basketball game— I don't know what I'm watching."

Sargent, Jordan
Song: "Black Republicans"
Line: "Niggas can't deny how svelte my car went / Or they take it in they face like Sargent"
Meaning: This reference to gay pornographic actor Jordan Sargent is one of the most unexpected lines on the entire mixtape.

and what, Monday, 7 January 2008 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

Bodyguard, The
Song: "Swizzy"
Line: "I just be chillin' in the Phantom/Listenin' to opera/Gun is my bodyguard/Call it Kevin Costner"
Meaning: 1992 film starring Kevin Costner as a bodyguard to a pop star portrayed by Whitney Houston. Possible coincidentally, the movie is sold as a two-pack with another film, The Phantom of the Opera. If Wayne constructed the line this way on purpose he really is the Martian he claims he is. Unreal.

Pop-Tarts
Song: "Boom"
Line: "They know I keep that toaster/You can be my Pop Tart"
Meaning: Besides sports, food is clearly Wayne's forte. Here, he uses this toastable breakfast snack as a come on just after comparing his gun to a toaster.

deej, Monday, 7 January 2008 06:34 (eighteen years ago)

Apophenia is the experience of seeing patterns or connections in random or meaningless data. The term was coined in 1958 by Klaus Conrad, who defined it as the "unmotivated seeing of connections" accompanied by a "specific experience of an abnormal meaningfulness".

Song: "Get High Rule the World"/"Dough Is What I Got"
Line: "An extravagent crib/I'm on the toilet watchin' Martin just laughin' and shit" … "I'm "What's Up?" like Martin"
Meaning: see Brown, Cole. This must be Wayne's favorite show.

The "dear Mr. toilet" line is great. By anthropomorphizing the toilet and addressing him in epistolary form, Wayne has leveled the playing field between porcelain and people who write annual top ten lists on their rap blogs. But while polite and formal, his boast is so audacious as to tell Mr. Toilet that he (Wayne) is as hot and disgusting as fecal matter, the thing which defines his (Mr. Toilet's) existence.

Also, an entertaining new interview:

It's all funny stuff. One good bit:

Would you ever write an at-bat song for a player if he asked?
Of course. Hell, yes, I would. I'd do it right now.

Off the top of your head, what would you write for Prince Fielder?
When I make music I gather all my thoughts…hmm. It probably go something like: Coming up to the plate young Prince/ swinging for the fence. Something like that, but it'd be better 'cause I'd work real hard on it.
