I finally copped Skanless, the Hi-C album, and yeah tremendoid was right its pretty amazing...I like old school Hi-C way more than the modern incarnation, the Eazy E comparison is on point.

to elaborate on the dance/hip-hop blends comment - it seems like a lot of the 'real dance' dudes are 'real rap'-phobic, passing on a lot of great shit that would probably fit really well in dance sets; the only way you can hear something vaguely combining the two is trashy post-hollertronix djs who just mash up, like, justice and lil jon

Yeah, sometimes I listen to current hip house revivalism - "Touch Your Toes" or whatever - and wonder why its supporters don't just listen to uptempo hip hop and R&B (Mya's "Free" alone is a better urban/dance fusion than anything else any of us listened to this week). But kudos to Van Helden I guess for not using a corny rapper.

That said (incl. the bit about corniness) Deej you might like Studio R ft. Capitol A - "A & R (Llorca Remix)".

There's a best-of on Quik that's pretty much flawless.

its great but imo probably not the best at translating what makes his stuff 'work' -- as w/ a lot of rap producers his collaborative stuff is part of the story too -- plus his albums (and the quikstrumentals, the fake reggae joints, plus the fact that his early career sounds so diff from his later stuff, and bcuz imo Trauma is one of his best records and that was post 'best-of') most ppl are better off getting a big picture view of his catalog --

but of course i would say that

Great thread, nice takeover deej, you’ve basically channeled most of my thoughts on Quik.

I got Rhythm-al-ism at a Sam Goody after reading the review in The Source in 98. iirc it got 4 of 5 mics, which mattered back then or something. I bought that album + Twista & the Speedknot Mobstaz 'Mobstability" at the same time and those two albums basically sound-tracked my junior/senior years of high school.

Rhythm-al-ism is a perfect album, a complete joy to listen to. As reverend stated; "listening to Rhythm-al-ism on headphones was a revelation and a half." This is what’s given it such a long shelf life imo. The songs are immediate (especially the front end), which hooked me from day one, but as I aged and began to appreciate the more intricate qualities of music production/sound is when this album really opened up to me. Sitting just ahead of Voodoo and Superunknown; it’s the most pure sounding album I’ve ever owned, I still use it test new headphones/speakers. Listen to We Still Party, there’s like 25+ layers in there, all blended seamlessly. The point xpost about Organized Noize is an interesting one, I’ve always thought their strength is in the way they layer their beats similarly to Quik. It lends well to repeat listens, there’s always something new to discover and appreciate.

Some highlights:
The bass-lines.
El Debarges fluttering vocals throughout Hand in Hand
Every single one of AMG’s verses.
The poignancy and triumph of Youz A Ganxta.
The random reggae smokers ballad.
The family feel to the whole affair epitomized by the tracks Medley For A “V” and Get 2getha Again.
The humor/story-telling on I Useta Know Her.
The stellar PSA style intro.
The sexy smoov of the Whatever U Do –Thinking ‘Bout U – El’s Interlude trifecta

The Eddie Hazel-esque guitar work on the final track (Medley For a “V” Reprise)

As a teen I would usually pass over tracks like Whatever U Do, but now I love it. Specifically the second half when the vocals drop out for a while and we’re left with this smooth jazz cut slathered with aural textures (flute!), then El Debarge comes back in to add the perfect touch and bring the track home.

I’ve followed everything he’s done for some time and he ‘s really the only musician I stan for. I could probably go on about all his albums like this, but Rhythm-al-ism is truly special to me, my love for the music plus all the memories tied to it make it such.

Tldr. Probably shoulda chopped that up into 20 posts like deej.

Nah, s'good post. I've been playing Rhythm-al-ism non-stop since people were enthusing about it in the rap poll thread. You've pretty much nailed it there, but yeah it's so enjoyable how there's always something new to pick up on with every listen. I'll definitely be voting for it now.

It was a really good show, although I wish he'd given less time for Quixotic to fuck around and his son's miniset was totally unnecessary. He has a great stage presence and had a lot of fun and danced around a lot. It all felt pretty loose. He went through like a bottle and a half of champagne on stage. At one point he had Quixotic do a mix of a bunch of songs he'd ghost-produced. He sang part of "Let's Get Down" over "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The version he did of "Do I Love Her?" had this really weird slower, Dilla-ish sounding version of the beat? He was using two mics with two mic stands the whole show for some reason and in the middle of "Mo Pussy" he suddenly goes "1-2-3-4 Show's over!", slams both of them down and disappears offstage, but then he came back and did a bit of "Why U Bullshittin'".

Yeah it's loads better than the Book of David which was totally on it when it hit but had a few mediocre beats and this kind of sourness to some of the tracks. This one is just terrific throughout.

agree with rev, only trax that really stick off this are "life jacket" and "that getter" - none of it's bad as such but it's when you go back to the book of david that you really realise the gulf in quality

man i couldn't agree any less with that assessment -- all the best stuff on the album is the autopilot stuff! when it gets bad is when he tries to do stuff that isn't in wheelhouse and/or lets his son rap
