Have I ever told the story on here about Chromeo cruising in the Jetta?
― nabisco, Friday, 29 June 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)
try to keep it under 4,000 words
― jaxon, Friday, 29 June 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)
Actually it isn't really a story, so I should avoid unduly creating suspense, like it's a good story or anything: I used to always see the smaller guy from Chromeo in my neighborhood, usually just standing around talking on his cell phone, and that seemed kinda cool but insufficiently special -- I mean, I wanted to see Chromeo TOGETHER, you know. But then a few months went by and I was crossing a street and a car stopped next to me, and I looked to my left and it was both members of Chromeo, finally together. And they were wearing sweaty white t-shirts and sitting in a Jetta with a bunch of furniture in the back seat, moving someone out of his apartment. And there was something so weird about seeing both members of CHROMEO together in such a mundane situation -- it was like a lolcat picture, "oh hai, we R Chromeo, he gots new one-bedroom" -- that I started laughing and they gave me a weird look.
This is so not a good story, but if I had a picture of Chromeo sitting in a little Jetta moving house, you would totally lose your shit over it.

I heard Needy girl at a Vice party recently. It sounded good. I feel doubly ashamed.
― jim, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)
it's great, holds together better as a whole than the first one did. really though it just makes me twitchy until they tour again.
― energy flash gordon, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)
i got it yesterday. it's okay. vocals kill it a little for me. but the music isn't bad. i predict trade-in for vinyl.
― scott seward, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)
no x-post warning!
"it's on oink" uh yeah and it's been in the shops for almost two months
― energy flash gordon, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)
it might be better than the vice books i've been getting though. what's the trade-in value on those?
― scott seward, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)
the new one is totally great, the first one was totally :-/
― deej, Friday, 29 June 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)
i think the first one is a really solid record, but I haven't played it in a long time
― gff, Saturday, 30 June 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)
i like them, too. i saw them open for the unicorns in 2005 and was pleasantly surprised.

― Morley Timmons, Saturday, 30 June 2007 05:43 (eighteen years ago)
the new album is great. 100% = total summer jam, even though it's winter.
it also makes me want listen to lots more of the music that Chromeo obviously listen to - i guess the Eskimo mix is a good place to start?
― jabba hands, Saturday, 30 June 2007 06:55 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't heard their Eskimo mix yet, but the Ce Soir On Danse! mix on Disque Primeur is aces.
― Telephone thing, Saturday, 30 June 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)
http://www.discogs.com/release/794987
...wow, that's not very helpful, is it? Disque Primeur and Chromeo's websites are both useless as far as getting the tracklist and horrifyingly Flash-heavy; their Myspace doesn't have it; and Arcade Mode, which I'm fairly sure used to have a tracklist, is out of stock. Ah well.
― Telephone thing, Saturday, 30 June 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)
i was talking w/ tremendoid about this, but my initial instinct is to be wary of the mixes; what makes them so great? I'd be afraid of it being a sort of generic 80s touchpoint mix or something and i really do enjoy their own music as 80s pastiche more than i think i would enjoy a random 80s mix from hipster dilettantes
― deej, Saturday, 30 June 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)
try this then. not hipster dilettante
kenny dope's roller disco mix. completely breautiful http://www.tunes.co.uk/tunes/featured/8411.html

thoughts on this? less hipsteur cheese, more collectro authenticity type shit, more r&b less pop than chromeo, i don't think i like it quite as much tho. Still some great songs on it (omg "too young to love")
― deej, Sunday, 1 July 2007 06:46 (eighteen years ago)
more revivalism, less pastiche
"I'm Your Paradise" is prob the best song actually

There is a pre-self-titled album mix floating around called "le mix." Obligatory Klymaxx, Cameo, etc., but some other good stuff. I'm going to the show this saturday @ empty bottle (fits 7.5 people), should be riot-inducing.

― deej, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)
yeah i dont know that id necessarily spend $$ on this but i dont really have a problem w/ this kind of pastiche/revival/whatever; id take zapp over these guys any day but ive heard more bounce to the ounce about six million times
― max, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)
plus if i can use them to get babes into lisa lisa & cult jam then im all for it
― max, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)
There's something about the best parts of the new one, though, that don't really feel like pastiche -- god knows how, since every individual element seems like pastiche, but there's something about the whole that winds up feeling to me a bit like the difference between Daft Punk and whatever Daft Punk are sampling. (I.e., not really different in content, but somehow vastly different in feel and application and whatnot.)
― nabisco, Thursday, 12 July 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)
yeah and even on the point about shows, cuet girls go to chromeo shows and formerly-cuet 30/40-somethings go to SOS Band reunions
is there an sos band reunion? i would go to that too probably

Tenderoni is good. I could swallow them slightly better if I could be sure they weren't just taking the piss. I mean they could love this sound as much as I do...
― I know, right?, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)
i think they have a genuine love of 80s soul and synthfunk. check out their mix on eskimo, they're well into it. i remember when air came out everybody thought they were joking, but a little bit of humour in music isn't such a bad thing anyway. don't be some "OMG, everything is so ironic nowadays" drip.

Chromeo: The Next Crossover Band That We Feel Like We're Not Allowed to Like Any More?
MTV's Buzzworthy Blog features Chromeo this week.
Of course they make amazing music, but maybe it's just going to be annoying when all of the mainstreamers are post-post ironically having fun while listening to Chromeo, and saying "Let's have a party where we dress up like we're in the 1980s." Then you'll log into facebook one Monday morning, and see a bunch of pictures of girls dressed like they are from the 1980s, and having a lot of fun.
So Buzzworthy.
Chromeo's good, but I think the blogosphere will probably focus more on Calvin Harris now that Chromeo is 'no longer ours.'
― artdamages, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)
"Let's have a party where we dress up like we're in the 1980s."
didn't this happen about 3 years ago anyway?

all those mainstreamers
― deej, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)
I hate hate hate Calvin Harris. It sounds so cheaply cobbled together.
And yeah, all the art school girls are so past 80's. Its all nu-rave nostalgia. Or so it would seem. I would have thought it a little early, but who am I to judge.
― I know, right?, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)
And why would anyone care about someone crossing over into the mainstream?

i really am having trouble figuring out how to be er 'smugly contrary' or whatever here!!! this is fun but diminishing returns the more of these groups show up i think
― deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 06:47 (eighteen years ago)
something about their willingness to throw every pastiche cliche into it + dudes mj imitation is leaving me feeling very conflicted
― deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 06:49 (eighteen years ago)
hm wow this is good. i guess if you wanna make this type of music— and i guess that's probably where this problem starts, but it's fine w/ me— you might as well jump all the way into the deep end and have a video like this and carry on like they do, or else it seems like your half-assing it, and intense self-conciousness would probably hinder the success of the music.
i guess part of why i stand/actively like stuff like this is because i don't have an intense emotional attachment to the music it so obviously mines, so my immediate reaction isn't "fuck you!"
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:00 (eighteen years ago)
its really quite well done
― deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:03 (eighteen years ago)

― deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:05 (eighteen years ago)
and some things are lost in the sort of lyrical vaguenesses required to keep it 'timeless'
― deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:07 (eighteen years ago)
based on the two other songs i've just heard on myspace, private (ugh, btw) seem to be stretching their legs pretty well within the kind of box they're inherently in by making the music they're making. they seem way less one trick pony than chromeo, like "crucify my heart" has that awesome singing by the woman at the end that's just really genuinely awesome, super-talented singing, and something like that is way more rewarding than a lot of the things chromeo do.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)
i agree. chromeo had the freshness of being first tho. i think what rubs the wrong way about this is that you can really see the limits of the style they're working with
― deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:25 (eighteen years ago)
that kind of thing frustrates me more w/ something like new young pony club, who seem to want to work within the mold more than these guys, but then again maybe private are just much better at what they do.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)
or maybe i'm giving private too much credit. i guess the flipside is appreciating when something is this good because you can see the limits of the style they're working with, however self-imposed they may be.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:39 (eighteen years ago)
now im confused
― deej, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:48 (eighteen years ago)
new young pony club is super terrible. not sure what that has to do w/cromeo, but whatever.
re: cromeo - more of the music, more of the choruses, less of moustache dude talk rapping.
― John Justen, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:50 (eighteen years ago)
Eh...I like both Chromeo and NYPC (not really sure why the latter are being brought into this, they're a different pastiche), but this feels kind of embarrassing. I don't know how to put this really, but where Chromeo are equal parts genuine enthusiasm and aloof distance, this tips too far toward the latter. It also feels like they're trying too damn hard. The forced MJ vocals, the nauseating "rap" section, it's...icky.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

of all the acts to surface around the period these guys came onto the scene, I never would've guessed they would be the ones to still be standing. their persistance is pretty inspiring.
― Loverboy (Spinspin Sugah), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)
Personally I don't think they've made any progress since Fancy Footwork(2007) and I am wondering why I bothered after She's in Control (2004). Everything else is regression.

― kim cardassian (s1ocki), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:26 (fifteen years ago)
fancy footwork was way way better than shes in control
― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)
We need retro because some people didn't pay attention to cool electro records the first time around. I listened to Fancy Footwork about eighty two times and thought it was a big fat DUD. The magic just isn't there. I think I gave them a chance. They're kind of asking for it, nothing can top classics like "You're so Gangsta" or even "Woman Friend".
― Shut Up. Kenny G. Etc. (u s steel), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)
'youre so gangsta' is not a classic

thats like every song of theirs. 'youre so gangsta' is a corny conceit & pretty repetitive & just not that good. the first record was super spotty in the songwriting dept. & that track was no exception ... the singing on the verses is really bad & annoying, and the beat is super basic & lame. i dunno just listening to it again, very thin & kinda actively abrasive
― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 03:47 (fifteen years ago)
like, ive been listening to 80s electro for years dude ... this is just a really thin pastiche & so is most of that first record. they def stepped up the songwriting a whole bunch on the second one, the production is a lot tighter, its just a much much better & more consistent record
― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)
i mean those fucking awful guitars on 'destination: overdrive' ... seriously?? u think this record is all that?

no no no the 2nd album has a bunch of jams ... 'bonafied lovin' 'tenderoni' 'call me up' '100%' ... it was like they stopped seeing 80s as a random throw-against-the-wall pastiche & kinda realized that hey this stuff was already funny ... it seems like they really care abt the music on the 2nd record & it wasnt just one big remember-the-80s joke
― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:20 (fifteen years ago)
100% is super ill
― max, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)
There are a ton of solid songs on Fancy Footwork--basically the entire thing is mixtape/party worthy. Even Momma's Boy turns into something of a jam. I would be surprised if the new record is even close to as good as FF but it doesn't need to be.
― skip, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 04:26 (fifteen years ago)

― blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 23:10 (fifteen years ago)
'lightweight' is p much the problem w/ most of the 1st one ... its like they have these vague ideas of what '80s R&B' is like & occasionally a good idea (like the melody for the hook of 'your so gangsta') that they meld w/ these cliches in order to paper over a lack of well anything else ... anyway ive made my pt i think

― A solo Beatle--Paul, George, John, Yoko, etc. (Whitey on the Moon), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 06:16 (fifteen years ago)
i thought i would be over them by now but this made me lol
"We’re not openly talking about any of these subjects in our music. Rather than talk about them explicitly we prefer to offer hints for people to make their own minds. When we named the album White Women we thought we’d provoke debates on issues of sex, race and gender. We’re in the midst of a conservative moment in America. The backlash to “Blurred Lines” was so puritanical. White Women is the title of Helmut Newton’s first book.
The other thing that’s super important to us is the question of race. Pat and I are very ambiguous: he’s a Christian Lebanese and I’m an Arab Jew. These things are confusing to most people in America. If people are going to listen to our music, why not make them think too? We made an album that’s racially blurred, an homage to black music titled White Women. You can appreciate it first degree or you can see an intellectual discourse on the war of sexes and race. In that way, it’s neither traditional funk nor traditional electronic music."
their fallon perfomance with death from above is pretty slick.

I've heard half of this - I like the opener a lot; some of the lyrics are a little clunky.
The lede in your pitchfork review was a little bit weird though j0rd - is it really a thing now that all decent albums must have significant written and oral retrospectives on their tenth birthday before officially joining the canon?

― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 May 2014 02:22 (eleven years ago)
i admit that it was a bit awkward though. i felt like it was the easiest route to get to my thesis, which is that this album in particular feels like something that really benefits from not being weighed down by expectations and the way people discuss music online writ large (a contrasting album would be like... the EMA record or something)
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 16 May 2014 02:24 (eleven years ago)
This is a lot better than it needed to be! Little things like the outro on "Play The Fool" & the bridge on "Sexy Socialite" are gorgeous.

I love the new album, and especially the extended tracks. They feel like updated 70s/80s funk 12"s that are still fun and listenable despite somewhat weak hooks because of good instrumentation and flow. Jealous is the clear standout and the only one that really works as a sub 4 minute pop track.
