what i'm wtf about is the prevalence of radiohead. wasn't their last album four years ago? even then they strike me as rooted in the 90s. i'm not saying they're bad, just that these young'uns must have generational low self-esteem or some shit.
they're the 8th most popular band on london facebook. and i bet that's based on 'the bends/ok computer' rather than 'kid a' and whatever the last one was called.

Univ of Missouri-Columbia was my alma mater.
My 'wtf?' is Jack Johnson. I had no idea he was really popular. I've only heard 1 song by him, personally.
When I opened this thread I figured Dave would be all over the place. I guess the college kids don't like Dave anymore.

JJ is the new Dave Matthews (including being "so bad and hated").

Yeah, I thought he was popular on about a David Grey level. I suppose when the Curious George soundtrack became a best-seller a few years ago I should have wised up.

It has Jack cocking Johnson. Okay, there's no excuse for RHCP, but Incubus struck me as at least slightly original, even if they do stink. Maybe they're bigger than I thought, I don't really know much about them. Mine is just a litany of the most obvious, boring, soul-destroyingly tedious shite you could imagine.

about the radiohead thing, also: i've always wondered this myself. i think that when it comes down to it, Radiohead are a very 'approved' group among many groups-- i mean, their shows aren't exactly like DMB or Jack Johnson shows, but here are the similarities: - they are nearly always in huge venues with one or two openers who, by all rights, should probably be the headliners - people tailgate Bud Ice, frat-party style and vomit is everywhere - there are lots of singalongs and bad dancing - light displays and large LED screens (for the people with lawn seats) are ubiquitous - frisbees.
but at a radiohead concert, there are also more weird pale uni students, more black, more thick-rimmed frames, etc. they're a real equalizer of a group. i mean, i still know all of the lyrics on "the bends" by heart, and i haven't listened to that album (or radiohead) for almost five years.

i'm not saying they're bad, just that these young'uns must have generational low self-esteem or some shit
otm, looking at the last.fm stats is just as depressing as these - the same bands, obv. maybe worse because i presume this is based on the acts people list on their profiles, ie what they think are "socially acceptable" (ie serious) acts, but last.fm is based on what they actually listen to.

No austinite really believes that except maybe writers for the chronicle.

― the table is the table, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, but here's the thing about San Fran State-- think about the number of grad students who moved to San Francisco from other places. it makes some sense that their list about, oh, a zillion times better than anyone else's.

yeah, but here's the thing about San Fran State-- think about the number of grad students who moved to San Francisco from other places.
uh, how is having grad students from out of town particularly unique?

I love the band. I've seen them 6 times and met them in my teen years. I don't understand how they possibily come close to appealing to everyone, everywhere, though. Does it make people sound cool? Apparently not, since the other two oft-cited choices are shit Coldplay and U2 :(
― Finefinemusic, Thursday, 12 July 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)
some people get similar things out of radiohead that they get out of u2 and coldplay. i personally don't think they're that similar (specially not coldplay) but there we are. muse do sound like a really shit radiohead though.

― 100 tons of hardrofl beyond zings (Just got offed), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)
It'd be cool if it wasn't a typo and instead referred to the note after "fa, so."
― Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)
Assuming it IS a typo...
If "La" gets isolated from all the French and Spanish band names, then it goes to No. 1 with a bullet.
― Eazy, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)
but there's no "la" in "manu chao", perennial "whoa look i'm cultured and i can party" student favourite
