If you're going to starve yourself in a desperate attempt at clinging onto your fame, at least wear your hair down. She looks like a spent match.

She looks pretty awful, I admit. And her make-up is ugly too.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)
I like looking at her. You stare at her when she's singing in her scowling way that there's so much going on behind those eyes.
― Alba, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)
Is she eating a rattle-snake in that first picture?
― Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)
shaun ryder? more going on behind the eyes tho.

Amy Winehouse >>>>>>>> 90% of other female singers.
only sophie ellis bextor can compete in stare-at-ability.

Why do lady pop stars always do this? Lauren Laverne was a lot finer when she had curves.

Iggy Pop, loads of other men look far worse than Winehouse even now
Winehouse looks great in that 'Then' pic. on a facile note I just wish she'd cut half her hair off and ditch those fake lashes.

Is she a pop singer or a model? I don't give a flying fuck if she's attractive (and she is at least interesting looking, I think), and at the risk of being a predictable p.c. leftist, I DO think there's inherent sexism in the question.
― Hurting 2, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)
sexi as *all* hell in both those pics yeah i agree completely.
― pisces, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

also her makeup could change it up a bit.
it's her peronsality that irritates me more, not that i know much of it but she seems so self-righteous. it's like what are you being self-righteous about, being a musician with a troubled drug habit? i dunno

Okay, I found this, which I guess explains all I need to know:
" Talking before her recent marriage to husband Blake Fielder-Civil, she ranted about her new found superstardom.
‘I’m not in this to be a fucking role model’ she insisted.
Fielder-Civil, joined her at the interview in the Toad Hall pub, New York, reportedly threatening a drinker, asking the interviewer: ‘Tell the guy who looks like he has leukaemia I’m going to slit his throat.’
According to reports the jazz songstress then cut into her stomach after posing with a shard of mirror for the photo shoot.
She then went to the toilet several times, repeatedly checking her nose with the piece of mirror.
As talented as she is, I’m afraid that what Amy Winehouse doesn’t understand is that after a certain point “antics” are only impressive to dipshits and 13-year-olds, and both of those groups have an attention span of about seven minutes. So long after the rest of us have gone, “Fuck her if she wants to kill herself,” she’s gonna turn to them and they’re gonna go, “We’re so over you!” Then things start getting lonely. She should call Marilyn Manson and ask him what it’s like."
Whatevs. I checked her out on YouTube, though. I'm surprised that she's a jazz singer with a nice voice. What an odd person.

― Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:42 (eighteen years ago)
Somehow a lot of people got the idea that a shitty attitude was a good thing. I wonder if the unspoken message is, "I'm smart enough to be jaded I feel the need to display that nobody can control me because I'm secretly very fragile so don't fuck with me, man, I'm close to the edge." Or, if it's just like, "shitty attitudes are classic like a pair of Levi's."
― dean ge, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)
My take on it is basically:
For a while 'jazz' vocalising was something nice/posh people did fairly successfully (witness Jamie Cullem changing the cocaine line on "I get a kick"), which is contrary to the history of jazz style.
AW being a move in a better direction.
Her "Role Model" comment is OTM!
― Mark G, Thursday, 19 July 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)
So basically you can only be happy if you have some meat on your bones? Her look's different - skinny, tats and dishevelled clothes - but that doesn't necessarily mean she's a junkie and/or depressed. Who knows? Who actually cares? NOt I. I like her current look.
Also, Maura, how do you know they stole it from PerezHilton, *he* steals 99 procent of his pics... ;-)
― nathalie, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)
I agree that this applies and should apply to any profession. Baseball players seem to have a lot of expectation put on them for some reason about being "role models" which is really just so silly.
But, on the other hand, right as she might be, it's her livelihood and her life, so it's kind of stupid to leave a bad impression on people. If she's lucky, people will continue to either think her attitude is cool or not care either way, but if she's unlucky, it might not be the best career move. Fortunately for her, weirdo badasses seem to enjoy a more faithful cult following.
― dean ge, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)
I was going by the above article I quoted for you and the pictures. Surly people who cut themselves in an interview with the mirror they use to repeatedly check their nose with don't seem too happy to me.
― dean ge, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)
Her husband seems like a real dick. Checking the nose obviously means we're not only talking about booze-and would also explain the extreme weight loss. Although when I've been on those kicks I gain weight because i'm starving the next day.
She was really gorgeous when curvy.

People are upset that she is being critiqued based on her image and attitude? Isn't that what happens on multitudes of threads? Or is the problem here that some you like this person's music in this particular instance and can't stand to see the artist raked over the usual coals?

― Jordan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)
no i think that's just his look. i love it
― Surmounter, Thursday, 19 July 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)
I think it sounds tinny. It doesn't sound like a live band but it doesn't sound like a studio creation, either. A worst of both worlds scenario. I don't think it's intended to be retro in the way some people have accused it of being, but he isn't brave enough in mixing contemporary beats and 60s arrangements. It sounds crap compared to its source influences, but it doesn't sound like a great noughties record either. It just sounds a bit cheap, for me.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)
I think we should go back to talking about that "then" picture.
― Bill Magill, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)
(And it overcomes a lot of this, when the songs are strong. And there are nice moments. But I think she's been short-changed by the sound of it, like nothing is competing with her voice for interest or drama.)

― Surmounter, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)
That'd be fine if it was super sleek, super taut and minimal. I just feel like it falls between three or four stools too often.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)
right... well i dunno i feel like Rehab is kind of super minimal/taut, no? i know there's a lot of brass but it SOUNDS like that to me
― Surmounter, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)
I've just realised I think I want the album to sound like Supreme Clientele.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:11 (eighteen years ago)
my problem w/ ronson's production - which is most obvious on his solo stuff - is that it's often just constipated lame 80s whiteboy soul, or a really obvious and self-conscious facsimile of soul. reminds me of jamiroquai in a way. tbh i never noticed winehouse's production that much - i think her best songs really are good enough to make it unimportant.
― lex pretend, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)
okay but back to amy's bones
― Surmounter, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)
I thought I wrote something similar when the album came out (the weirdness of sampling retro sounds to make retro-sounding music, instead of rap or r&b where the sampling is more obvious and blended with modern sounds), but I can't find it. Anyway it doesn't bother me anymore when I'm out and I hear one of her singles.
― Jordan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, the only thing more grating that hearing "Rehab" repeatedly (specifically the no no no refrain) is hearing other people mimic it -- it's kinda the new millenial version of hearing people adopt piss-poor British accents and spool out ancient Monty Python bits at parties when they think they're being cutting edge.
People suck.

I played "Rehab" on Youtube a couple of times yesterday (it's not on radio here, so I've only heard it sparingly) - but now all the "Daddy says I'm all right" and "no no no" stuff is on permanent repeat in my head and it's driving me nuts. Totally the most effective hooks in ages but good god I think I hate the song already.
― milo z, Friday, 20 July 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)
I guess this would be the time to repeat that I could've sworn she was saying "They tried to make me Puerto Rican and I said no, no, no" the first time I heard it (live and extra slurry on some talk show).

I think Amy Winehouse is kinda hot actually. Though perhaps not in super emaciated pics like the ones at the top of the thread.
― Ronan, Sunday, 22 July 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)
It's ironic that it's okay saying Pop is mostly about image, on a theoretical level, but then when you actually discuss a particular musician you get ridiculed for doing so. I mean, ILX make up your mind, now will you.
I agree with Ronan, I actually quite like her skinny look. Didn't much care for the curves (to look at).
Also, I'm stupid, didn't realize Ronson was brother of Samantha. *sigh*

Although somebody should probably be reminding her to eat now and again, I think the thing that disturbs people about Amy's appearance is that it doesn't fit in a pop context: she actually looks like she should be making absolutely batshit crazy rockabilly rekkids . . but she isn't.

Report: Amy Winehouse arrested on suspicion of assault
By RAPHAEL SATTER – 2 hours ago
LONDON (AP) — Amy Winehouse was arrested on suspicion of assault Friday following reports that she scuffled with two men during a wild night out, Sky News television reported.
The 24-year-old soul diva, who recently entered rehab after years of erratic behavior and canceled concerts, arrived at a central London police station to answer questions relating to the alleged incident, her representatives said.
Police didn't directly confirm that Winehouse was in custody, saying only that a 24-year-old woman was being held on suspicion of assault. British authorities don't usually name suspects until they have been charged.
Winehouse didn't say anything to assembled photographers and cameramen as she walked into the station late Friday afternoon. Sky News said she would spend the night in custody.
A man was quoted in tabloid newspapers as saying he was hit by Winehouse when he got in her way while she was playing pool at a bar in the Camden neighborhood and then head-butted another who was trying to hail her a cab in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Winehouse and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were arrested in the Norwegian city of Bergen in October and held overnight on charges of drug possession. A video of her allegedly smoking crack hit the Internet shortly before she won five Grammys this year for her critically acclaimed album "Back to Black."
She was arrested in London in December on suspicion of attempting to interfere with a court case involving Fielder-Civil, but earlier this year police said prosecutors were no longer pursuing the affair.
Fielder-Civil faces charges of perverting the course of justice stemming from a case in which he is accused of assaulting a barman.

I live about 100 yards from the police station in question and passed by on way to buy a paper this morning while press etc. were awaiting her release. There were a ton of sound/satellite trucks parked nearby and about 20 paparazzi. It looked like she was going to be released soonish as her driver was there, but if she'd come out where they were waiting there would have been a scrum.
Three really nasty female news journalists saw WPCs emerging from station and catcalled up to the police: "Any news about Amy Winehouse - you know, thin, 'troubled', junkie? You might have heard of her, maybe?" and just basically laughing it up and continuing with their shouting in a similar vein (they know damn well police can't comment in that situ, police tend to leak to media in other ways). On my way back from the newsagent I passed by and stopped to chat to one of her security guys (gist of conversation: did you hear those women, the wankers/hope they'd get her out of there w/o interference, good bloody luck).
I do journalism, but not this shaming, evil doorstop shite.

And for once, the 'comments' afterwards are um, germaine. It takes what, seven or eight sets of comments until someone calls for the government to have her sectioned and/or classified D so the media cannot report on her or play her songs...

― Turangalila, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 07:55 (seventeen years ago)
Massively insightful documentary on her on C4 last night, Jacques Peretti's conclusion being, essentially, "Winehouse uses her disruptive personal life to fuel her songs". Quite a lot of "duty to her gift" type talk as well. Like I say, insightful.

― Turangalila, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 08:10 (seventeen years ago)
Who actually _is_ Jacques Perreti? I assume he was big in the 90s or something, but all I remember him from is that meandering column about clubbing he used to write for the Guide.
― Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)
Who actually is Clive James these days morelike. When did his insightful funny foreigners TV series finish?
And as for all this "duty to her gift" stuff, since when was pop a Customs Office?
― Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)
I dunno who Peretti is, but he had a very, very dull voice.
― Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:29 (seventeen years ago)
I believe ex-Guardian Guide columnist Peretti produced some TV programmes for Guardian Guide columnist Charlie Brooker.
― Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)
IIRC Peretti came out of the modern review mk2? He used to be pretty good, vv funny (a long time ago). Haven't read anything by him for years.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)
I suspect another case where hammering out a weekly column for years will wear down/use up even the best writer pretty quickly.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)
Blimey, the Modern Review. Didn't Boris write one or two things for that?
― Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)
I don't recall ever seeing him in it, but I only got the magazine format version of it.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)
Have the tabloids ever been quite this obsessed with someone quite this fucked-up from the music world prior to Doherty? Like, waiting for them to die? I can't recall anything quite like this before, but that's probably because I'm not thinking hard enough and don't read tabloids. I remember then going gaga for Gallaghers jnr and snr in 1995-1998 or so, but neither Noel or Liam ever looked likely to drop dead of a smack overdose at any moment.
― Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:41 (seventeen years ago)
I can't remember anything this squalid and morbid before Doherty either.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)
He wrote for Dazed and Confused before that. Was Dan Ashcroft based on him a bit? I can't remember.
I used to like his clubbing column but his piss poor new series is the sort of thing he used to take the piss out of.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)
Pre-Doherty peeps used to try to hide their use. No-one was supposed to know that Brett Anderson was on the skag etc. Docherty/Winehouse don't bother to hide their use (or barely) hence new dynamic.
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)
The Doherty obit is going to present major logistical problems for news programmes; "his hits included...um, and...er, there was that one where...erm..."
― Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:38 (seventeen years ago)
I think if Elastica had been ran through the tabloid mill in a similar way BITD, we might have seen a pretty similar scenario - they only really got away w/ it cos no-one cared about them much by the time they properly got their habits going
― DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:47 (seventeen years ago)
Cameraphones/vids help a lot as well. "here's a picture of a figure you can barely make out but it's WINEHOUSE smoking CRACK!"
― Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:52 (seventeen years ago)
Around 96/97, The Sun actually had a picture of Noel Gallagher eating a curry on page two or something, as if he was, I dunno, Jackie Onassis or someone. I think that was the day the music died.
― Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:55 (seventeen years ago)

― Mark G, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)
One more argument for the "The rolling "Amy Winehouse arrested for drugs again today" thread:
Singer Amy Winehouse has been arrested in connection with drug offences, her spokesman has said.
The 24-year-old is being questioned at a police station in east London, the spokesman added.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7388721.stm
― James Mitchell, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)
Argh, half of the problem with Winehouse is that people won't leave her alone, and their behaviour in a pack while pursuing her. Elastica story has ended happily for most of the group members, but I can assure you at the time Jus and Damon had pact not to be photographed together purely because paparazzi of the day wanted 'the shot' and they were constantly being hassled. Less media to dodge back then, though.
