Complete: this band is amazing

This band's youtube clips have been linked to a few places on ILX, but i think these guys deserve a thread of their own. I've become obsessed with them; so many noise rock, no-wave and other bands of that ilk have tried to make a sound as harsh and alienating as this but not with this band's unbridled, amateurish enthusiasm. I think they have a truly unique sound. It's outsider music for sure, kind of the sludge metal equivalent of the Shaggs. I especially love the singer's "I can see my house from heeeeere!"-style vocals. Most people will just mock it but they wish they had one tenth of the passion Complete has. This is a band that BELIEVES, and there is something to be said for that. Too bad this is from ten years ago and the band has probably long since broken up.

Here's a documentary about this band I am providing only for background information (the guy who made it is a completely unfunny douchebag who doesn't realize what he has discovered):

http://youtube.com/watch?v=glHUMzfRoQA

..and here are Complete's individual songs:

"Beautiful Sunrises"

"Hoogie Boogie Land"

"Dream-Ing"

"Into the Night"

"Hot as Hell"

enjoy.

They come up with some decent stoner riffs!

they should do a reunion tour with The Epsilon Rising opening for them.

ha i forgot about the Rising!

latebloomer, Sunday, 5 August 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

i forgot to post the uninterrupted interview portion of Complete's videography:

I'm a musician who hasn't taken the time to write how I feel about things. Most of it is done in action, but reflection is a time honored tradition of those who embrace the elements that distiguish us from beast. I am very close to a wild animal. In fact, I am a man.

My band is The Epsilon Rising. I've mentioned music twice. It must be as important to me as beauty. I like cynicism. I love God. I love women. I love fully expressing myself without any fear of the consequences. I love poetry and risk.

And I wonder why I'm in Romania? It is a matter of choice, and I'm certain that time will tell me what I am searching for... (a great drummer and guitarist).

latebloomer, Sunday, 5 August 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

i'm still trying to find the original Epsilon Rising thread but no luck yet:-/ that manifesto/craigslist ad was one for the ages.

however i do think Complete's music is more interesting than ER's. i genuinely dig them.

latebloomer, Sunday, 5 August 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

That's why ER would open for them.
A sick part of me would still want to "audition" for him if he still lived in the US. He still hasn't found anyone. :(

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

ta da:
You should join this band! (best band ad ever!)

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

thanks man! i owe a wookie life debt to you now

latebloomer, Sunday, 5 August 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

We are in the process of recording our CD which we hope will bring war and racism to an end. :) I love my people... that means you.

latebloomer, Sunday, 5 August 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

compare/contrast with the lyrics from "Hoogie Boogie Land":

"There is no waaaaaarrrrr in Hoogie Bogie Land/There is no hate/Can y'all relate?"

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh snap they have a track I haven't heard on there now, "Drag."

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:02 (eighteen years ago)

hahah apparently "Drag" is a total ripoff of 4'33"

latebloomer, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I can't get it to play either. Cage, Page, what's the difference?

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

Jesus, the Epsilon Rising.

(Or is that Jesus = the Epsilon Rising)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)

I really should post those links over on that thread so we can get back to Complete.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yes indeed. And besides, it's obviously time to revive that one.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:21 (eighteen years ago)

the spoken intro to "Hoogie Boogie Land" is kind of next level:

gr8080, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

when they cut to her for the 2nd time and she's still dancing 6 minutes later, it really seals the deal.

gr8080, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:34 (eighteen years ago)

This really IS like the Shaggs. Like you'd have to be The Magic Band or King Crimson to be able to duplicate this. What THE FUCK is the rhythm section doing.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)

The ever elusive next level, of course.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

Curtis Brumbalon - vocals
Mark Swain - guitar
Peter Creech - bass
Todd Hamilton - drums

Just for future reference.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 06:41 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to start dropping Creech/Hamilton into conversations about awesome rhythm sections.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 August 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa, whoa, whoa. About 16:29 into that Behind the Music video:

COMPLETE HOT LINE: (817) 561-1361

Somebody please see if that number still works and get an interview. Ned or Nabisco or someone. It's probably Curtis's house.

PS: the guy "hosting" that video really is such an annoying asshole that I expect to see him hosting some reality show or TRL in the near future.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 5 August 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

This is really great. Is, like, the sum total evidence of their existence one public access vid?

I myself, along with many other people I'm sure, tried calling the phone number given on the cable access show. An older lady answered and sounded annoyed. She must get a lot of calls and, needless to say, had no idea what I was talking about.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

The guitarist does seem to be the most, uh, adept. Like, you could stick him in front of a competent rhythm section and he might sound almost normal with a little practice. Maybe he realized this, thought that would be better and is now playing in a completely nondescript bar band. Little did he know that Complete was the true righteous path to glory.

marmotwolof, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

this is awesome
i thought it sounded like scratch acid kinda

daria-g, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

I love how that Dave guy seems to think this is an unprecedented level of unlistenable noise and anyone with a reasonable knowledge of indie shit can rattle off a list of good records that sound similar.

There has to be some record we could think of that would kill this guy dead, if this is his limit.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

daria-g, Thursday, 9 August 2007 03:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah we could go on and on.

I love those bands but Complete's total lack of put-on or irony puts them in category of their own. These guys just wanna ROCK.

latebloomer, Thursday, 9 August 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

they had to have known their music didn't sound like any records they owned

cutty, Thursday, 9 August 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

never heard of complete

but i keep on looking at this thread and thinking 'complete' is another way of saying 'complete this sentence', 'fill in the dots', 'such and such are amazing'

know what i'm say'n

they talk about having thier "own sound" several times in the interview segment.

gr8080, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, they do seem aware that they're unique.

latebloomer, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

they also make sure it is known that all of thier initials are in the word "Complete".

gr8080, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

I was trying to think of other names with cmpt. Computer, Compete, Campsite...

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

so why is US maple any better than this band? because they are ironic?

cutty, Thursday, 9 August 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not directing that comment to anyone in particular, it's just a weird dichotomy

cutty, Thursday, 9 August 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm tending to dislike bands that operate on a primarily ironic principle lately. It's such a shit way to go about music unless you really know what you're doing.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

these dudes were so into doc at the radar station

cutty, Thursday, 9 August 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I don't see why we should automatically assume that they're just trying to sound like ZZ Top or something and failing miserably just because they're from Texas and don't look like hipster college kids. All kinds of crazy shit came from Texas.

latebloomer, Friday, 10 August 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

and they want to rock in it.

latebloomer, Friday, 10 August 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

and they do.

latebloomer, Friday, 10 August 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'm scared to click on the link for Dave's band. Just tell me who they sound like.

libcrypt, I really wanted to make a list like that from cmpt but assumed it was going to be too much trouble. I suppose there's a website that does it for you?

uber-generic modern rock horsehit.

apparently the dave guy is no longer in that band...not like it matters.

latebloomer, Friday, 10 August 2007 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

Horsehit! That's way worse than horseshit. It's mean to hit horses. Unless they deserve it. Poor Dave, someone should send him a CD-R of stuff that makes these guys sound like Steely Dan.

On my Mac, I opened up Terminal and did

grep -i 'c.*m.*p.*t' /usr/share/dict/words

one month passes...

I'm having a tough time wrapping my head around the cmpt blog guy's weird mix of pride, smug condecension, and bitterness.

Mike Dixn, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

It's not difficult once you realize how utterly and profoundly mediocre his band is/was. He's totally jealous.

I really dislike the guy who made that documentary/blog but I can't wait to read his interview with the guitarist, if it comes to pass. I wonder how he (the guitarist) feels about being in Complete.

latebloomer, Monday, 17 December 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

holy crap! (bulletin from the Complete myspace tribute page):

"This just in! I have been contacted by Curtis' stepson, Thomas. We have recent photos and possible access to Curtis' cd with his new band Barbed! The cd contains the hit Hoogie Boogie Land!
It's an early Christmas for all of us!

This is amazing news. BARBED!

squids, Thursday, 20 December 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

And somehow I'm not surprised by those pictures.

squids, Thursday, 20 December 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Barbed is a good name. So is Complete. I approve of this thread.

Mr. Goodman, Thursday, 20 December 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

I love in Beautiful Sunrises how his vocals only have some super-reverb effect turned on at the end of his phrases, so the last 2 words sound like they're in a cave.

"Submit questions for video interview with Curt!

I am going to be doing a sit down interview with Curt, the lead singer of Barbed (the new complete) and ask any questions you all may have for him and let him tell his side of the story of that infamous night that was captured on video including news of a new version of Barbed featuring everyone from complete minus Peter, as he is no longer a friend of Curts!"

the pics of him and "Creech" have been taken down...:-(

latebloomer, Sunday, 23 December 2007 08:17 (eighteen years ago)

The new stuff is flat out awesome. SWEET solo on Hoogie Boogie Land.

filthy dylan, Sunday, 23 December 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Utterly risible but oddly mesmerising. Is it supposed to be quite so rhythmically sloppy?

chap, Sunday, 23 December 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

...including news of a new version of Barbed featuring everyone from complete minus Peter, as he is no longer a friend of Curts!

I wonder what happened:-/

latebloomer, Sunday, 23 December 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

Keep in mind that the Narrator Douchebag of the original YouTube said that if you could find a Complete CD in any store, he'd give you a hundred dollars.

Are these guys on their way to making a CD now? If so, may we encourage them just so I can ask for my $100 from Dbag?

three months pass...

they've released an album and it sounds like a single microphone capturing them practicing, complete (no pun intended) with what sounds like banter between the songs, "dreaming," "beautiful sunrise" [sic?], "into the night," "hoogie boogie land" included in versions that don't really sound like either the 1997 or the 2008 ones:

http://open.spotify.com/album/4mnLLsSo3aFWcn730bA6pE

it also sounds like listening to a band that still can't play in time (or has replaced a drummer who only played out of time fills with one who only does borderline incompetent straight rock drumming) after 17 years (with a 10+ year gap, obviously) from the vantage point of outside their practice space, and for that reason alone it is deeply weird and perhaps not as good an introduction to this band as that incredible TV performance
