A sequel to the previous thread. Anyway, promo guff:
A new dawn awaits!! Southern Lord Recordings and Om have set October 2nd as the official release date for their 3rd (first on Southern Lord) full-length album!! This beast is entitled: “Pilgrimage” and was recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago, IL. by Steve Albini. The album is currently being mastered by Bob Weston (also in Shellac) at Chicago Mastering Services. “Pilgrimage” expands on their unique use of riff,,, cadence…chant..as heard on previous recordings yet finds the band expanding their vision into new territories. Of particular note is how much the song-writing has developed and in turn makes the dynamics of the songs much more intensely powerful. The track-listing for “Pilgrimage” is as follows: 1. Pilgrimage 2. Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead 3. Bhimas Theme 4. Pilgrimage (reprise) A gatefold LP version of the album will also be released sometime shortly after the CD release.OM will also be performing live on the following dates:09/13 Beachland Ballroom - Cleveland, OH 09/14 Empty Bottle - Chicago, IL w/ Circle 09/15 Empty Bottle - Chicago, IL w/Daniel Higgs 09/16 Southgate House - Newport, KY 09/19 Marquee Theatre - Tempe, AZ w/Pinback 09/20 Sunshine Theatre - Albuquerque, NM w/Pinback 09/21 Bricktown Live - Oklahoma City, OK w/ Pinback 09/22 Palladium Ballroom - Dallas, TX w/ Pinback 09/23 Emo’s - Austin, TX…stay tuned for East Coast dates in November and West Coast in December. …samples of the new recording will be made available on Southern Lord in the near future!

Now if only they had decided to release it two weeks earlier to coincide with a certain other release coming up.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)
..expands on their unique use of riff,,, cadence…chant..as heard on previous recordings yet finds the band expanding their vision into new territories.
..so it's pretty much going to be the best music EVAH MADE then.

so far the best shit they've done has been on those split releases
― am0n, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)
But all their shit has been of such a high quality. Also, I'm wondering if the description of their "new" sound in that blurb means they'll be doing more shit like At Giza.

They played a track off this (I *think* the title track but I wasn't inclined to take notes) when I saw them about three weeks ago. It was fucken huge, as was the rest of their set
― DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)
I'm extremely excited for this. I bet it'll be awesome.
Also, I'm wondering if the description of their "new" sound in that blurb means they'll be doing more shit like At Giza.
That's what I was thinking too -- that song is definitely a major change from their other stuff. (Haven't heard any non-album tracks, though.) I wouldn't mind that at all. How's the Current 93 collaboration, btw?
On a different note, I just picked up Sleep's Dopesmoker. I think it's pretty awesome but I definitely prefer Om. Cisneros' vocals are a lot better in Om and I love the "riff,,, cadence…chant" stuff they do to such great effect.
Can't wait to hear it!

Does anyone know of an online copy of Om's Invisible Jukebox feature in the Wire from a year or two ago? I'd love to check it out, I bet it's pretty interesting. (If it's not anywhere online and someone just happens to have it along with a scanner, don't hesitate to email it to me either...)

Got it yesterday. It sounds like Om to me.
― unperson, Friday, 14 September 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)
it's like these guys knew that they only way I could possibly love them any more than I already do was if they wrote a totally awesome song called "Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead"!
― bernard snowy, Friday, 14 September 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)
I know bernard. I haven't even listened to the tune yet but I just smiled upon reading that song title. Let's all say it again, it's worth repeating: "Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead."
― Mark Clemente, Friday, 14 September 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)
aaaaaaaaaaaaaa
― am0n, Friday, 14 September 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)
Yea this track kills. I like it 'cos it is, with some subtle changes, just typical Om -- I like what they do so much that I didn't really want many changes, just more "riff cadence chant." is fine. But the production is pretty great here.
― Mark Clemente, Friday, 14 September 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)
Am I the only one who feels like they are just playing one long ass song? It all sounds like part of the same whole. I love that, though.
― Trip Maker, Friday, 14 September 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)
Obviously this rules...
...but was anyone else hoping to hear, I don't know, a weird synth or something this time around? Female vocalist? Cello through a Leslie speaker? SOMEthing?
Also - vinyl coming out two months after CD = bogus. WTF Southern Lord?
― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 14 September 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)
>Obviously this rules...
Not so obvious to these ears. What they do is okay and momentarily diverting, but honestly I don't get the worship. It mostly just sounds like the intro to your average Tool song, stretched to the 10-minute mark.
― unperson, Friday, 14 September 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)
SL always do that.
― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 14 September 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)

― Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)
I'm pissed that the timing didn't work out for me with that show. I was in Chicago last weekend. Been dying to see Om for a while. Not to mention Circle. Shit.
― Trip Maker, Friday, 14 September 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

― Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 September 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)
two heavy tracks bookended by quieter 'at giza' type thing. not as good as the last one but i thought the same about 'conference..' when i first heard it and that one really grew on me
― am0n, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)
i took it off ur hard drive Nederick
― am0n, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

..or more, special limited editions pending.
― Mike Dixn, Friday, 14 September 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

but i like it better each time i hear it
― am0n, Sunday, 16 September 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)
Just listening right now to the whole thing, it's awesome. It's not as heavy, and I think that's really working for them. They do seem to be getting a little quieter with each album (obviously with the "At Giza"/"Pilgrimage" tunes), even the heavier tracks here seem a bit more subdued. It's been said before but the production also sounds great, Albini did a nice job. The vocals seem a bit lower in the mix, but isn't that something Albini generally does a little bit?
I'm really digging this.
― Mark Clemente, Thursday, 27 September 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)
Did I bring this to work with me today...I think I did! Will the library stand it?
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)
vocals should always be lower in the mix imo.
I love this album.
― rockapads, Friday, 28 September 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

― Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 28 September 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)
i think that's my only complaint with it at this point
― am0n, Friday, 28 September 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)
is anyone else hearing raga influences? it's good...
― LaMonte, Saturday, 13 October 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)
yes, but even morse so on "Conference of the Birds"
― gr8080, Saturday, 13 October 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)
also, new om. good. on the one hand you kind of think, "oh, this again?" but then, if you just approach them as playing doom ragas - improvisations around a handful of notes in a certain key - it works.

― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 14 October 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)
Okay, so this album is flat-out brilliant. Why it took me this long to give it a listen, I'll never know.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)
I think I've gotten more enjoyment out of Om's three albums more than almost anything else I've listened to all year. Everything from the riff of "On the Mountain at Dawn" on VOAT to "Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead" is fucking fantastic. Not into live shows at all really but I'm definitely gonna catch them in DC in a few weeks.
what are some good non-album tracks?
― Mark Clemente, Friday, 26 October 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)
I think Om are the doom Steely Dan in that if somebody doesn't like them, then that guy is not to be trusted
― J0hn D., Friday, 26 October 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)
there are like two, so both of those.

A bird just slammed into my bedroom window during the big tom hit on track one. Anyone else been having problems with this? Vibes too heavy for our feathered friends?
Great, great album. Maybe my favorite of the three. The production is perfect.
― s. morris, Monday, 29 October 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)
i might go see them live but i will have to travel :////
― am0n, Sunday, 11 November 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)
I do wish the vocals were mixed higher on this, reneging slightly on my earlier claim of best production ever. How am I meant to surf the astral plane when I can't even hear the holy word?
― s. morris, Monday, 12 November 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)
Missed these guys last night in DC. Too tired, weeknight, didn't feel like doing the drive or metro ride, though I was really debating it.
anyone go?
― Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
i drove down and but was an hour late due to getting lost in s.e. or charles county somewhere. i hate driving in d.c. so much. missed jack fahey, caught part of grails which was ok. the venue's sound was kind of ass. i think om opened with something off the first one and it sounded really muddy. one of the sound guys eventually fixed something offstage during 'at giza' and it got much better. really long, slow 'flight of the eagle' then one or two off the new one, maybe one of the split tracks, i don't know it all blended together. lots of b-more faces in the crowd. was that fog during the drive home or clouds of smoke ;)
― am0n, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)
"and but"
Fuck, I was planning on going to that and forgot all about it. I can't tell if your review was praising the show or not -- did I really miss anything?
― Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)
i can't tell either.
the venue's sound ruined it in a way, i should've felt that low end and kick drum caving my chest in. still pretty great despite.

Despite Ned's review, Allmusic.com, and many other sources of accidental disinformation, Chris's last name is Hakius, not Haikus.
I also want to thank Chris for turning me on to Billy Cobham's drumming.

― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:00 (eighteen years ago)
god, i hope this isn't true.
― Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:03 (eighteen years ago)
i'm also curious to hear the shrinebuilder stuff.
I saw them at the Independent and they kicked ass. Was really impressed by their chemistry and the drummer's stamina. He pounded those things forever. Also impressed by how much noise two guys can make. They really filled the room in a venue with not the best sound imo.
I'd hate them to break up, but at the same time unless they drastically change their sound soon, they are running the risk of redundancy. I spaced out (in the bad way) a few times during their set. I'd love to see the two guys stay together and add a non-showy percussive rhythm guitar player to the mix. They did one song near the end of their set - maybe even for the encore - that I didn't recognize and I really liked. Rocked in an almost mosh-pit groovy type of way. I hope it gets released on some kind of media before they call it quits.
― rockapads, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:09 (eighteen years ago)
I still need to buy this album, dammit.

nah, i actually think there's a decent amount of variation between the albums. sure, "flight of the eagle" from COTB could've been switched with any track from VOAT, but the harder tunes on Pilgrimage are pretty different from the harder stuff on the first two albums. they've done a pretty good job of refining the sound with enough variations from album to album, i think. production-wise, too, Pilgrimage marks a big step forward, i think. if they don't break up, i think they've got another couple of solid albums left with the sounds they're working with.

When I saw them on the 18th, the last thing they said was "see you in a few months!"
Fingers crossed.

It seems Chris has bronchitis and that's why the us tour is postponed. http://www.foreverdoomed.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1463

Om Myspace http://www.myspace.com/variationsontheme
Om is continuing forward with a new drummer and working on a new recording. Please check omvibratory.com and this page for updates. A live vinyl only LP "Om - Live at Jerusalem" will be forthcoming. This is Chris Hakius' final release with the group. I personally apologize to east coast fans who planned on coming out to the shows. Please know that Om will be back in your area later in 08. Thank you to all of you. Live dates resume in late spring. There is a LOT of new material on its way. Shrinebuilder is also forging ahead. See you all soon. -al

Wow that sucks! Chris was amazing...gonna be hard to replace
what's this Shrinebuilder stuff everyone is talking about?

A band with Wino
― Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:31 (eighteen years ago)
oh shit. that should be interesting. hakius will be missed, tho.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:37 (eighteen years ago)
I dont see how they can continue without him
― Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:45 (eighteen years ago)
I totally agree, there is just no way that they would be the same band with any other drummer. Om is all about the absoultely rigid chemistry and synergy between those two guys, as anyone who's seen them live will testify. They've been playing together for 20 years! There's just no way. It feels like a real Tufnell / St Hubbins moment. Their set at Supersonic last year was the most awesomely powerful sound I have ever heard made by two humans, ever. I hope they sort this shit out.
― myopic_void, Thursday, 31 January 2008 11:17 (eighteen years ago)
yea, you all are spot on, hakius will definitely be missed. this is too bad. i'm still excited for the shrinebuilder stuff (i thought i read in the wire that hakius was part of that, too?), but this is a bummer.
― Mark Clemente, Thursday, 31 January 2008 13:03 (eighteen years ago)
r.i.p. hakius. so young
― am0n, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)
I'd have a hard time accepting a Hakius-free version of the band (even a reduced-Hakius version) as Om. New version should be called O, or maybe M.
― contenderizer, Thursday, 31 January 2008 15:31 (eighteen years ago)
∞M?
― s. morris, Thursday, 31 January 2008 20:35 (eighteen years ago)
Om shouldn't continue without him, it's unthinkable.
― Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 31 January 2008 20:50 (eighteen years ago)
well now I'm really glad I caught their in-store at Amoeba SF last year

When Hakius stayed at my house years ago, he turned me on to Billy Cobham. Thanks Chris!!!
emil amos is the new drummer, new 7" titled "gebel barkal" just completed, due out soon on sub pop. full-length due next year.
i'll be very curious to hear the new drummer.
so anyone know the reasons hakius left? any word on shrinebuilder (and whether or not he's still a part of it?)
― Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)
(btw, the info re: the new drummer/7" is on the band's website

Th lp isn't top sound quality unfortunately
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 29 June 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)
but it's SUPER LIMITED, surely that's more important?
hope it comes out on cd eventually, can't be arsed to chase vinyl anymore.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 30 June 2008 01:14 (seventeen years ago)
I doubt it's that ltd actually. Supposedly it is a vinyl only release.
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 30 June 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)
it's SUPER LIMITED to 3,100 copies, no big deal, really. that's probably about how many it'd sell anyway :D
― stephen, Monday, 30 June 2008 01:15 (seventeen years ago)
It's been on sale weeks at SL and it's still up for sale.

― am0n, Monday, 30 June 2008 04:18 (seventeen years ago)
I doubt it will sell out quick due to its shittiness of sound. Packaging is nice though. Wonder when the 7" will drop.
― Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 23:29 (seventeen years ago)
so is this 7" out or not? nobody seems to have it in the real world, the subpop website has dick-all information about it. this isn't some subscription-only crap, is it?
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 21 August 2008 09:05 (seventeen years ago)
yes it is. sub pop singles club or something.
― Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 21 August 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)
oh for fuck's sake. hey sub pop cram your subscription garbage ok.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Thursday, 21 August 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)
No doubt some will appear on ebay. Maybe the band will have some for future live dates or something.
― Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)
sub pop singles club
lol remember the 90's?

sub pop singele = 1 mediocre track and a throwaway dub version? http://forums.gleemax.com/images/smilies/sleepy.gif
― am0n, Sunday, 31 August 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago)
i bet it's still better than the shitty sounding live lp
― Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 31 August 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)
might also be that the 7" time constraints don't suit them
― am0n, Sunday, 31 August 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)
sub pop singele = 1 mediocre track and a throwaway dub version?
unfortunately otm. "at giza" type stuff but not as good and the vocals actually make the song worse. and they finally build up a head of steam towards the end. 7" is def. not their format, but i hope the album's better. new drummer's got some big shoes to fill and some tiny-ass feet.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 10:23 (seventeen years ago)
ok but the melodica in the dub version is pretty cool.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)
ok so i actually think "gebel barkal" is fucking awesome. i was a little disappointed at first but this track is great. new drummer kills, and i loved hakius. dude was seriously hard to top but amos does a pretty good job, he's got a different touch and different dynamic going on, almost has a kind of lightness but he can also get seriously heavy when he needs to.
and they finally build up a head of steam towards the end
yea i would've liked it they made the track longer and didn't cut out the part at the end when things start getting heavier. i'm really optimistic about the album though.

i've been checking out grails a bit, and while i think some tunes are hit or miss, amos' drumming is a constant. very good

2.15.09Next month we will announce our new label as we enter the studio, again with Albini, to record the new album. All the material is written and we are ready to go. Updates to follow. In other news we have a live LP coming 4/28 on Important: Conference Live. This will be available on vinyl only. Black vinyl and white vinyl editions. Why a live album at this time? We felt it essential to document the way these songs evolved to date before moving on to the aforementioned forthcoming material.
