The buzz: "This purveyor of retro-electro is going to be huge in 2007!" - MTV.
The truth: This purveyor of reference-heavy designer funk is going to be hilarious in 2007.
Most likely to: Make us laugh.
Least likely to: Make us dance.

FUMING Scots dance artist Calvin Harris cut short his gig at last night's Live at Loch Lomond festival after an angry row with fans who threw mud at him.The Dumfries-born star dropped a song from his set after a few morons in the crowd tossed the dirt on stage.Calvin, who has produced tracks with KylieMinogue, couldn't believe what he was seeing and slammed the yobs before performing The Girls. As he introduced the song, he said: "I don't know what you are throwing mud at me for. I make my own music - I'm here to entertain you."I'm not like one of those DJs like Carl Cox over there playing other people's records and getting paid £20,000 to do it."The rest of the crowd cheered as Calvin pointed towards the other dance tents. He then appeared to try to get among the audience to catch the culprits, before deciding it was better to end the gig prematurely. He spoke exclusively to The Razz after coming off stage.Calvin said: "It was like three or four guys chucking mud at me and I just thought it was time somebody said something."It was when it hit my keyboard that I got angry because I thought 'how much is this gig going to cost us?' I stuck up for myself."We actually dropped a song and cut short the set because of it. I wanted to play The Girls so I dedicated it to the guys who threw the mud."Calvin claimed it was even more of an insult because he's performing with a "proper band" and being paid less than other artists. He added: "It annoys me some DJs are getting paid five times as much as us when we are a proper band and they're only playing other people's records."They are getting so much more than us but we seem to get the grief. It is kept secret in the industry but we are doing all these gigs and other guys are getting paid £20,000 for playing 20 records."I kept trying to find the guys who were throwing the mud. The first time it reached the stage I tried to throw some of it back but I didn't want to keep doing that in case it really started something. When it was messing up all our gear, I thought I should really do something."Calvin admits being a festival rookie but insists the experience won't put him off playing more.He said: "Before this I'd never attended a festival - I was just so busy making tracks in my room."If I've learned anything it's always bring your own wellies and then leave them with the tour manager. He knows how to deal with dirty wellies."

carl cox doesn't get paid more because of what he does on stage. he gets paid more because he can draw 10 times as many people.
― elan, Monday, 24 September 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)
I caught the last few songs of his LA set last week, and didn't think it was that bad. Sort of had a 90s dance/LCD Jr. vibe to his songs. I did notice that the club was 18+, and most of the crowd did not have over 21 wristbands, which I think says a lot about his demographic.
― naus, Monday, 24 September 2007 06:16 (eighteen years ago)
Also, way more females than males in attendance, and most looked like they hadn't been to an indie club before. Led me to believe that he must be getting a huge MySpace/MTVU push.

just read this on wikipedia about the "Acceptable in the 80s" video:
The music video features many references of the time; the stereotypical large hairstyles, bright dayglo colours and bizarrely, scientists dissecting what appears to be an otter, products of which are used by a hair stylist, TV chef, and to heal a grazed knee. The video is directed by Woof Wan-Bau.
this could be a number of things I suppose; is he saying that BACK THEN animal testing and vivisection were (more) acceptable, that there wasn't as much environmental consciousness as today? I love it that someone called Woof Wan-Bau exists.
― Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)
I think it was more that people just hated otters in the 80s, as they were associated with the (then) embarrassing 70s (Tarka The Otter, Ring Of Bright Water etc.)
― Alba, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)
(actually Ring Of Bright Water came out in 1969, but we all know the 70s began in 1968)

The dance musician, from Dumfries, in the south of Scotland, was returning to the UK from America when the bag containing his laptop went missing.
A spokeswoman for his record company confirmed it contained the only copy of work on Mr Harris' second album.
His first release - I Created Disco - was a top 10 hit and carried the debut single Acceptable in the 80s.
The album's success led to him working with the likes of Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Kylie Minogue, for whom he wrote the forthcoming single In My Arms in his bedroom on a 15-year-old computer.
A spokeswoman for Columbia Records confirmed that the lost laptop contained several new songs the DJ and musician had been working on.
"He has lost the only copy of the new album," she said.
"It is a big cause for concern - months of work have gone into that."
She said it would not affect his live performances as they did not involve the use of the laptop.
However, it could set back work on a new album for some time.
"They have offered about £750 in compensation," said the spokeswoman.
"You can't really put a price on something like a new record."

This is totally a dog-ate-my-homework story, and is Harris's excuse for not yet having churned out the follow up Columbia is no doubt pestering him for so they can rush release it before everyone gets (even more) sick of him.

But peoples; "There won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time (OH I WONDER WHY THE FUCK THERE WOULDN'T BE SNOW ON A CONTINENT THATS GOES THROUGH THE EQUATOR) Do they know its Christmas time at all?" Sorry that line always fucks me up. I change my mind, Harris must quit but also Geldof should suffer somehow.
― VeronaInTheClub, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
Don't get me started on the lyrics of Feed the World, it's disgustingly glib and misleading. And how about all that snow on the top of all the mountains in Africa?

Calvin Harris is trying to ingratiate himself to ILM now!

funny thing is, his music is just as boring as the shitty "indie" bands he slags off.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:13 (sixteen years ago)
i think we can all agree that if Calvin Harris and all those indie-landfill bands stopped making music and just buggered off then the charts would be better.

Wow, that Petriedes article is one of the best things I think I've ever read of his. I mean that totally without irony.
So basically, Harris' angst about that article boils down to "wah wah wah, Alexis Petriedes is smarter and better educated than I am" - WOW, that must *really* hurt.

it's more, people are having this hysterical overreaction to this dude as if he's some brand new circle of awful hell rather than someone who is pretty clearly operating in a paradigm that's been sending hits to the charts for 20 years
it's basically "look, we survived Robert Miles, we will survive this too, just relax"
― (thinks and smiles) (DJP), Thursday, 16 February 2012 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

i am a big fan of "another night" to be honest
― teledyldonix, Friday, 17 February 2012 06:13 (fourteen years ago)
"Another Night" is brilliant. That bit near the end with the crazy little synth arpeggio behind Olaf's rap is one of the best all time house party moments.
Pretty much all of my issues with Harris are tied up with his voice and persona, which were heavily prevalent on "I Like The Girls" and "Born In The 80s"; those records really were some brand new circle of awful hell. He was a dickhead in interviews and the like at that time as well.
Fear and loathing seem somewhat overdone if he's just producing chintzy circus organ dance-pop now, but if he opens his mouth on the new record then all bets are off.
― Tim F, Friday, 17 February 2012 07:02 (fourteen years ago)

― Johnny Fever, Monday, 5 March 2012 01:37 (thirteen years ago)
I just looked at his wikipedia page... that "Sweet Nothing" song is getting some radio play in the US and aside from the horrible Rihanna song it's his highest charting single. But in the UK his last six songs have gone 2-2-2-2-1-6 and both albums #1. Is he totally unavoidable on UK radio/in clubs etc?
― skip, Thursday, 21 March 2013 17:47 (twelve years ago)
i don't know if actual djs in actual clubs actually play him but yeah he's all over the radio, drinking from the bottle being the current irritant
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 21 March 2013 19:03 (twelve years ago)
I can't imagine any DJ with any kind of rep ever playing Calvin Harris, but he's probably ubiquitous in high street nightclubs (ie most of the clubs in the UK).
