How about an ILX DJ mix competition? (closing date for entries: Monday 5th November)

We could put submissions into this thread and then do a poll, what do you think?

the next grozart, Sunday, 26 August 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

what's the prize?

This would be cool.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 27 August 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, if people are interested in doing it, we should upload entries to this thread.

The rules are:

1. Only one mix per DJ, and should be you mixing.
2. Mixes should be roughly 60mins long (give or take 5-10 mins)
3. Should really have been mixed for the competition. This means you have from today to record the mix. Obviously no one can tell when the mix was made, but in the name of sport it should have been mixed after 26/Aug/07.
4. When you upload your entry, make sure you include your DJ name, the name of the mix, and what you used (decks/Traktor/Ableton/etc), and a tracklisting.

Not sure whether to have separate competitions for people who use decks and people who use software - what do you all think?

You have 1 month to get your mix in 26/Sep/07 is the closing date for entrys. Then we'll start a poll a week later (to make it fair on those who got their entry in late). The winner gets a hearty virtual slap on the back and the general adulation of the ILX massif.

I was supposed to read Jane Eyre today. Instead I started and finished this. But I told my mom that I finished Jane Eyre.

Uploaded: Tape Store's 'i've never been to a dance club, but i bet it sounds like this' Mix

Note: All mashups by Tape Store on Saturday, Sept. 29 (with the exception of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin's "Bigger Than Yr Yard (Tape Store remix)"

I used Audacity for the whole thing. Thanks to zshare.net and other sharing sites. Also, thanks to the Australian programmers who created Switch.

My name is Chris. This only explains ten seconds of the mix. Do I need a tracklist? It's more fun without it...

Tape Store, Saturday, 29 September 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

I just skimmed my way through Jane Eyre. Grace Poole not killing Jane = ;_;

I forgot to do all of the details, and I quite like this mix so, like I said, that laffy taffy is as good as mine.

A little over 60 minutes over various minimal house/techno and that sort of thang. Made with DSS DJ Which is essentially a Traktor clone but with less bells and whistles. I made a cover, but not out of boredom. I mixed this in the beginning of September, but nevertheless I'm banking on it to win me fame and or fortune.

I think I just picked out my records, now to find time to record. It's too late in the evening now. I'm stating this to make sure I follow through with it. It's going to change your lives. Or not at all.

dan selzer, Saturday, 6 October 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

I was really excited about my mix a week ago, but it sounds duddish now. I'll probably get a program and create something better.

Tape Store, Saturday, 6 October 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

Inspired by this thread I made a new software mix with varied stuff I've been playing this year. Being mostly psychedelic trance I doubt it wins the competition, it may annoy the jury.

Starts darkish and minimal, progresses to a melodic climax and comes down a bit emotional.

Thanks for listening!

I did mine this afternoon. Kinda eclectic, kinda fun, some wonky mixes but what are you gonna do. I'd been promising myself (and others) I was going to record a series of mixes for a year or two now but kept putting it off. This was fun and hopefully will inspire me to record those mixes as well. Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think.

oh yeah.

Equipment used: 2 Technics SL1200 mk2s, a Rane TTM56i mixer, Sennheiser HD-280 Pro headphones, recorded directly to Audacity free audio software on a Mac G5 using a Mark of the Unicorn 828 mk 2 interface. In Audacity, I made 1 edit to fix a really messed up mix that I had recorded twice while recording the mix live (picked up the needle and redid the mix then edited out the flubbed take) and I fixed some volume issues. Please excuse any digital distortion, I didn't set my levels well.

Dan, is that "For Those Who Like to Groove" sometimes known as the "Hollywood Sweat Mix"? I've been playing that quite a bit lately. Looking forward to listening.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 15 October 2007 07:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hollywood Sweat Mix is the mix right after the one I played. I'll have to listen again to see what the difference is. There's 2 other versions on this 12, and 2 versions of a pretty awesome song called Lyrical Rundown, which is less hip-house and more hip-hop.

So how is the competition going to work - can someone (with some webspace) put all the mixes in one place then run the poll thread, or at least the ones with links that will expire?

And if I upload one tonight will that be too late?

I was going to put my In the Rain mix up, just cos it was completely ignored on that thread and I think it's OK.

i couldn't sleep last night so decided to join in the fun. this mix is called "autumn camp". as it was done in the middle of the night i had to record it at a really low volume so the levels may be a bit random (it's hard to tell when you are straining to hear your speakers). most of the tracks used are fairly drastically altered / edited versions created for my dj sets.

it was recorded using one technics turntable and ableton live running on a g4 powerbook run through a pioneer djm 800 mixer and recorded into a mac book pro using spark xl. the mix is exactly as it was recorded except that the overall volume was normalised in peak.

the mix is 55 minutes and 40 seconds long.

Autumn Camp

Renee And Angela - I Love You More
Cloud One - Atmosphere Strut
Artist Forgotten - Rock Me
Arpeggio - Love and Desire
Black Ivory - Mainline

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 2 November 2007 03:49 (eighteen years ago)

In the Rain. 70 mins 37 seconds. All songs (bar one) with rain or storm sound effects as an intro or outro. Done in Ableton Live, but the only "mixing" was layering the rain sounds over the next song. The stuff on vinyl, I just recorded as clips, then put it all together in the arrange window. So not really a DJ mix as such, but it's nice.

It was filthy dylan's idea. There's a thread somewhere with loads of songs on it.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/t29bje

The Dramatics - In the Rain
The Temptations - I Wish it Would Rain
The Ronettes - Walkin' in the Rain
Wu Tang Clan - Can it be all so Simple
Burial - Night Bus
Sade - Sweetest Taboo
The Cure - The Same Deep Water as You
Floodbuoy - Cloudburst
Geiger - Good Evening (SuperMayer remix)
The Doors - Riders on the Storm
Neu! - Seeland
Lee Perry - Cold Weather
The Cascades - Rhythm of the Rain
Graham Central Station - I Can't Stand the Rain
Echoes of Nature - Thunder and Rain
Rhianna - Umbrella

Downloading some of the others now - looking forward to them.

The Reverend, Monday, 5 November 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

or..."El Mixeo Reventón", rather.

The Reverend, Monday, 5 November 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

Is that after the new Lamborghini???

Spencer Chow, Monday, 5 November 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Etymology of "reggaetón": "reggae" + "reventón" (that which explodes, but had come to be slang for a very good party), and yes, it is the name of the new Lamborghini (that explodes)

Damn straight.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

Nice. Also similar to El Reverendo obvs.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

Right, the finish date for entries is well and truly over now. Sorry, but we have to end it somewhere.

We won't have the poll too soon, just so people have time to download and listen, but I think it would be nice to collate these somewhere so it's a little less messy.

I'll get on it, but I am very tired right now.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

Is anyone really going to listen to all of these???

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to give it a shot. I mean no offense to the talent but there IS such a think as the ffwd button.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)

i have listened to 2 1/2 already just today, there's not that many c'mon feel it feel it

Yeah, mine works fine this way, since half my mix doesn't believe in transitions.

By the way, if you want me to sendspace, let me know, but i did put it on archive.org:
i've never been to a dance club, but I bet it sounds like this

Tape Store, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:49 (eighteen years ago)

is this the same as the tracklist you posted upthread, ts?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. And the title is accurate, obv.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

how have you never been to a dance club? what with all the awesome, burgeoning scenes emerging from columbia's diverse nightlife.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

thx jamie, glad you dug it

xp- lol I used to go to Shattered

dmr, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I'm probably not going to listen to any of them, as first I'd need to see what the ILM consenus on which ones are better (i.e. the vote), and I guess I'll just vote for myself then, ha, C'mon, I need this! if only because it'll look good to put on a resume.

I got like halfway done with it, then homework crashed the party, then I assumed I was past the deadline. Earliest I'd be able to get it in at this point would be like Wed night.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

just post it! fuck a contest

I want to hear gr80's too

dmr, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

Dan wins for best footnotes.

Jamie T Smith, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

thanks. I did make a mistake that I later learned about...A R Kane contributed very little to Pump Up the Volume, more the flipside.

two months pass...

I forgot to do all of the details, and I quite like this mix so, like I said, that laffy taffy is as good as mine.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/AbXy6001/covert.jpg

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ud3dsh

A little over 60 minutes over various minimal house/techno and that sort of thang. Made with DSS DJ Which is essentially a Traktor clone but with less bells and whistles. I made a cover, but not out of boredom. I mixed this in the beginning of September, but nevertheless I'm banking on it to win me fame and or fortune.

Hi. I've been missing for a while, but I just listened to this mix again and realized that it's really good.

Ha, I'm probably not going to listen to any of them, as first I'd need to see what the ILM consenus on which ones are better (i.e. the vote), and I guess I'll just vote for myself then, ha, C'mon, I need this! if only because it'll look good to put on a resume.

OK, this is way beyond blatant self-promotion, but what ever happened with this contest? Google didn't tell me much.

viborg, Thursday, 10 January 2008 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

yeah it's time we got voting. i haven't got a lot of net access at the moment though. should do soon, but if anyone wants to create a poll, go ahead.
